  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 ต.ค. 2017
  • In this video we lay up the last layers of glass on the deck. This marks an important milestone in the refit of my sailboat. All that's left to do now is fairing (huge job) and painting.

      I would love to hear a professionals take on this job??? If you were to have a frank conversation with Mr. Mads he could then decide what to share or not to share :) I feel like this is similar (though larger) to a project that will be coming up in my future.
      Personally, I think it's awesome and spiffy as well, but all the conditionals on how he's not a professional make me wonder if it's something that I can use to learn from. Or more accurately, that I can learn to replicate as opposed to learn from his mistakes. :) I hope that's not insulting or off putting. I love all these videos but it's important to know what to use and what not to use. Between him, yourself and drakeparagon I have been inspired to both sail as well as not be intimidated by large boat projects. Thanks to all of you!

    Just before you introduced him I said to myself that guy spreading epoxy looks a lot like Thomas from Two Aboard Tuuli. Lo and behold it is him! I watched all of their videos and miss them. I trust all is well with them and they plan on sailing and recording their voyages again. Thanks, Mads, for the video. Another great one.

    You certainly have a Motley Crew there, Mads. Those guys and Gal are the BEST! I am certainly excited to see the deck done. However, haven't seen Jueckel in a while and my dog Ginger is starting to ask questions I can't rightly answer ;). Any who, have a great week and see you next Sunday...."Same Bat-time; Same Bat Channel" (a reference from the Batman TV show back in the 60's)

    I don’t care if your videos are 30 minutes, 17 minutes, 22 or 45 minutes. They are ALL interesting, and considering the subject matter, entertaining. I know putting these videos together is hard work, on top of the boat work, your day-job, and what ever time might be left over “free”. I appreciate the effort you put into these videos. Make them as long or as short as you want - just please keep them coming! I am sure that I am not alone in eagerly looking forward to the finished boat, and the grand re-launch splash party video. I know the end result is going to be awesome!!

    Might consider keeping those gallon metal containers, cut the wide side out, bend a lip over, and you have a great parts washer or sorting bin. Same for the cubes -if you can clean them out. Just make them 4/5/6 inches high, but keep the bottom as the bottom. Good health and stay warm!

    Mads, I'll tell ya...man, I truly feel your efforts are the best of the sailing channels---especially for the 'real-life'99% of sailboaters learning, re-fitting, updating--Not that I dont appreciate the 'Escapist -we-are-in-Bora-Bora!' channels--- but in order to GET to Bora-Bora (or anywhere, responsibly) the sailboater must attend to their boat. And I have learned so much from your videos! Very well done, and extremely helpful. Thank you! I am about to 'epoxy-fill' some water ingress in the balsa deck around a baby stay chainplate we are removing....how did you ever learn to do all this boat work!! amazing! Anyway, even though I never comment I have watched, and often saved them for Amy to view, every one of your excellent videos since we met a few summers ago. In fact, Amy- a nurse- said to me at dinner 'out-of the-blue' (she watched it before I did) "Maz got bad stuff in his eye, should I send him the directions for an every-2hour eye flush wash? He needs to keeps flushing that eye!!" I told her 'he's a big boy -- im sure he's getting it treated..' Bottom line: we are your biggest fans and we still hang high your native flag you gave us!!! - Vin

    Ya gotta always sand no matter what. Sanding is so therapeutic, good for the soul. Wear your appropriate dust masks of course. The deck looks wonderful. Bet that boat will float good once she hits the water. With final sanding, priming, and paint, along with appropriate texturing to prevent slipping, it will be lovely. It is so much stronger now than before! Almost too bad that you'll have to put it to work and subject it to wear. I've felt that way about my cedar canoes too, but then again being on the water is what boats are all about.

    It's important to wash the hull with fresh water many times before applying new resin. I can't remember why, but is worth reading up on..

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason is amine blush :) But when using peel ply the blush forms on the top of the peel ply and is removed with it. Hence no need for washing the laminate :)

    you should look for an old refrigerator on your local buy sale free website like craigslist and put a small heater in it to store your epoxy in before you do the hull will be alot cheaper and easer than having to build a heat box and you could proabably store more in it as well

    Maybe not Volvo Ocean Race super aerospace grade lamination, but seriously good job and probably better than most 'factory' boats... Give yourself and your helper a pat on the back, that deck looks great and the overbuilt quality is 'passage maker' seaworthy!

    Mas, older boats are better built tham newer ones. The bulkheads look used but they can be reskined or painted as you have done. My Ericson 38 is 15000 lbs and built like a tank. The great thing about sailboats is, if the hull is in good shape everything else is rebuildable. I don't wish to be impolite but from your american (don't want to upset the English) language skills I would think you grew up in San Francisco like me. Where did you learn your american speak, it is very very impressive. The boat looks great and should do well in heavy seas. Your are doing as good a job as any boatyard could do and better than alot of yards. Well done Sir, my compliments. Best Wishes!

    I would buy a really good orbital sander, for example Bosch GEX 150 Turbo (which is the one I have) or Festool RO 150 FEQ-Plus ROTEX. So much better than normal orbital sanders or belt sanders. Removes a ton of material while keeping you in control. My guess is that it would save you 50% of your sanding time. Dust handling is also great. Rented one for sanding the bottom of my fiberglass boat. I thought it would take a week but was done after less than a day. Got so happy that I imedeatly bought one....
    Good luck!

      Cool! I managed to pick mine up for 3495 sek during a sale. So sometimes they are a bit less expensive... Never tried the festool, by my guess is that is equal performace, better dust control, better box and twice the price. As usual with festool...

    Hi there, You should really try a Festool Rotex RO 150 sander/polisher. It really is a marvel. It is three machines in one and I absolutely love it. First it is a high abrasive sander in the rotex-setting (rotating+excentric sanding. It is better then a belt sander because you can use it on rounded surfaces like the deck or the hull. This setting works fast as needes and gentle with no risk of the edge of the belt cutting deep into your work. Second it has an excentric sanding setting for light and finishing sanding. Third it is a very good polisher that leaves no holograms on dark surfaces.
    Please try to borrow it for a day from a local Festool store and you are convinced. I would love to help you for one day but holland-denmark is a little far for one day of help :-)

    "... very much overbuilt ..." Segue - I was watching SV Delos tour of the Amel factory from early this year. In one scene, Brady was holding a plug from a thru-hull hole from an Amel 64. My guess was it was about 50mm total thickness. The balsa wood core had to be about 30mm, outer shell was about 15mm and the inner about 5mm. I could not believe that. I wonder what the outer shell lay up schedule is ! If someone knows for sure, please post.

    Very pleased that you went to a belt sander. However, with that speed and power comes the need for practice and skill. No doubt you have discovered the trouble caused if you let the sander list while running. Best of luck building the skills and the boat is looking awesome. BTW, are you drying the hull while laying glass? Why or why not?

    I am just being curious. Why are you going to lay a layer of fiberglass exactly below the waterline. Wouldn't it make sense to start fiberglass about 10-20 cm above waterline. Epoxied fiberglass is also an osmosis barier, if I am not mistaken. This way it would be ensured that no part exposed to water most of the time is not protected.

    That special guest, the Imperial Droid from Star Wars that was on your deck, what was it? It looked like an armored up Storm Trooper's Bomb Sniffing Droid.

    stress not - short and sweet is fine
    also you are building a boat ... with a (formerly) soggy fiberglass hull ... gutting the interior and rebuilding the deck. How's the motor?

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks :) The motor is fine - knock in wood! It's only got 1000 hours on it so there should be plenty of years left in her :)
