Mad's great video as always. Obviously speakers are a personal choice. However, If we may just add some thoughts. We love our music, talking books and pod casts. When on passage, at anchor or along side we use the cockpit like another room. Having the ability to play all of the above through a set of good quality speakers via our audio system makes a difference. We have front speakers in the saloon, rear speakers in the cockpit and both sets are sufficiently far apart to get a good stereo sound. Our "Radio" has bluetooth so our phones and devices can input to the system. We added a double pole switch to the rear speakers so that the rear or cockpit speakers can be switched off at the flick of a switch. When docking, putting the anchor down or in a marina where we would not want to disturb others. The system also links via our smart TV, so any videos, TV, TH-cam etc can be played through the superior radio amplifier and our saloon speakers to give a much better sound than the TV. Linked to our onboard Blue ray player we get to watch our favourite DVD's and Blue rays through the same sound system. It was not expensive and the technology is already out there. You just have to link it via bluetooth and/or the radios various inputs. 75% Of the quality of your sound will be down to the speakers, their positioning and location. If like us you love your music, talking books and pod casts you may want to think about this now as you set the boat up for living aboard. Food for thought? Sail safe, Ant & Cid xx
Fastest 20 minutes of my week. When you make this your fulltime job...I hope you bump it up to 40 minutes at least. Unlike the NFL, I can count on you every Sunday year round. Thanks
You need to stop acknowledging the “I’m more clever than you people” unless it’s constructive information. Your validating them by saying it. Now that I said that...I so look forward to your videos every week and have certainly picked up a lot of tips. Thank you. It’s quite impressive watching your progress and how she looks. Very clever with the logo in the kiwi. Keep up the great work.
1. The KiwiGrip looks great; all the more so with the 'Sail Life' logo. 2. I liked the dodger from the outset, but never considered the sci-fi correlation until you mentioned it. Ironically, "Athena" was the name of one of the Battlestars in the original 1970's Battlestar Galactica. 3. Your know-it-all youtube critic imitation is absolutely hilarious 4. I enjoy everything about your channel. The editing, content, and quality of workmanship are top-shelf. Thank you for sharing it.
One thing you may want to consider while you are working on the dodger, is that once you start passage making you are going to want to have a radio in the cockpit, if you don't have a marine VHF in the cockpit, you are going to find yourself doing a lot of running back and forth between the helm and the radio. I personally would really like to have a large speaker for the radio in the cockpit that is of better quality than the built in speakers that come stock inside of radios, you may think about finding a place for that where it will stay dry while doing the dodger. On my boat when motoring the radio becomes effectively useless because I cannot hear it. I will be swapping it out and going to a similar setup with a cockpit speaker that can be turned off, and a cabin speaker that can be turned off, this way you are not disturbing the person who is sleeping with the radio. I am sure that will keep Ava happy if she does not have to hear you "yammering on" as you would say in a busy sea way while she is sleeping.
I thought putting in the Sail Life logo was going to be a horrible idea that would never look right. I'm happy to admit I was proven wrong. Very nice touch and it looks great!
A 7 on the spifiness scale? Dude, your attention to detail is nothing short of amazing. I actually held my breath while you peeled the Sail Life logo off. That was an 11 in my book!
Mads, Really enjoyed your impression of the Monday morning quarterback crowd (LOL). The Kiwi-Grip was at least a seven, but the Sail Life logo pushed it to at least 9! I agree with the comments below-you need to infill the logo with red. It might take an afternoon of work to meet your usual high standard but it will be the spiffiest logo around. Thank you for another wonderful Sunday morning video and now go sailing for a day. After all you have done you deserve a day off, but just one ;^).
THE SASS IS REAL!!! Mads, you covered your bases and did what you thought prudent, no shame in that, I know I wouldn't have thought that far ahead, so you go bud!
Mads looking great you are my ace DIYer / boatbuilder. But as a father my hat 🎩 went off to you when you took the time out to say happy birthday to a 7 year old 🖐✋👍 that will makes is day more than you know. I know my kid is ecstatic if is name is mentioned on youtube.
I know this video is several years old at this point, but I originally got hooked on the 5 part osmosis, then went back & caught up to this point. All that is to say, you can really feel the joy of that reveal. That was a long day coming, and very well deserved!
We used a similar product on our decks for 20 years and loved it. We taped off the edge and painted a primer coat , then two coats of the latex product with a loop roller similar to the one you used. We found this thigh latex coat was very anti slip enough to keep you from slipping in a rain storm.
Came to your channel quite late, but have binge watched a lot. I applaud your methodical approach and the level of excellence you apply to every task you undertake. Your "detail orientated" comment made me laugh and i imagine the small area of KiwiGrip you are not happy with will be getting a revisit. Keep up the good work. Treg.
Good call on the tent! Use 2 or 3 inch masking tape. Also remember less is more on the kiwi grip start with the smallest notch and you can easily add more later, but it's harder to take away. The boat is looking awesome, but then again you already knew this!
The boat is really looking good and the cabin top looks great. My vote is for teak grab rails. Even if the take some work to keep them up, the will add a bit of class that will take the boat off the spiffometer. Regardless of your decision please but grab rails on the outside of your dodger, you will be glad you did. Cheers, Chris
Entertaining and informative as always, Mads. The light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter and Athena's looking awesome! Not trying to be a back seat driver, but I'm glad you figured out that less KG is better. When I saw how much you were putting on I kinda cringed-sorry- but I've done more than a few boats with it and found you don't need a lot to get a good grip and make a uniform coat. I just spread it on with a 3" brush and found that the roller evens it out nicely. If any gets where you don't want it, lacquer thinner will remove it after it's hard. Just don't leave a rag wet with lacquer thinner sitting on it....don't ask. It's a great product. FYI, the local rep told me you could buy white and have a reputable paint company tint it any color you like, since it's a water base. I've done a couple boats with custom deck colors....
You have not one, but two yacht rocks? Impressive. Applying Kiwi Grip to my last boat was pretty well the funnest job I did on that boat. It was a fine day with my son and I getting covered with custom tan-tinted antiskid.
Enjoying going back to your old videos on refitting Athena and comparing her to some shots in your latest content. Always enjoyable (even the 'Oh Glorious Sanding'). Stay safe what with a couple of nasty blows coming across the Atlantic. :-)
Thank you from New Zealand! You have given me the confidence to attempt some repairs on my GOP trailer yacht. You don't profess to be a expert, but you show that anyone can do it if they take their time and think about what they are doing.
I think using a smaller trowel and “less” kiwi grip will be a better solution, the cabin roof texture looks a bit heavy to me. Love the logo though, that was spiffy! I agree with other comments that the stainless handrails will have. A higher “spiffy” rating then the teak. Love your channel, it really helps to keep me motivated on working on my boat. I am considering vblogging the process as well. Cheers!
I went back and watched the video when you first purchased the boat, you gave a short tour then. I've said it before but it's worth saying again this has been an amazing transformation. Not many have the patience and fortitude to do what you have done. But there is still plenty to do, the inside cabin, the mast and rigging. So I'll reserve my praise for later.
Looking good. If it was my boat I'd go for the teak rails. A small amount of exterior teak is not a big maintenance chore and I find them more comfortable in hand. They also look spiffy!
Hoppy Birfday to Mateo in NOLA! I used to live in N.O. But I escaped. I saw a local out sailing on Lake Michigan today. A balmy high 40's f/8 or 9c and rain. Hats off.
Living up in the northern latitudes tenting the cabin tub was the right choice at this time of year. To make the patches smaller next time just fold it into quarters and the make the cuts on the arc.
Kiwi grip looks the same as tred grip, small granules of white rubber. I applied my cat in 1999 & it was still going strong but gave it a freshen up this year...cheers
Great job on the Kiwi Grip! Really looks super! Just a personal opinion, I love the teak hand rails but wouldn't put them on my boat. The stainless also would look nice I think, but I'm more thinking about the time for maintainance working to keep that brightwork looking good. I remember taping and trying not to get varnish on the deck, but always loosing that battle...LOL! The hours it takes just isn't worth it in my opinion. Besides less time on brightwork means more time with Ava and that's got to be a plus + + + LOL! So go on more tours, adventures and just enjoy a glass of wine and the sunset instead of more glorious sanding and varnishing! Love your work, your boat, your chanel and you guys!
You are getting some great results. Have you considered grabbing some lumber and building yourself a staircase beside the boat? Might be safer than the "ladder of potential calamity". Thumbs up.
Hi Maz,I just wanted to congratulate you on the progress you are making on your new boat. well done indeed. Ive picked up some very good tips from your exploits and enjoy your unique approach to DIY boat renovations. Best of luck in the future.Steveeasy
Beautiful, I love your videos. Love the fact that you did away with the exterior speakers. There’s nothing more annoying that loud music on the, well anywhere 😎
Buddy. One thing I never consider good prep including watching temp and humidity and controlling or manipulating a waste of time,it is the key to a good job in my game.Well done and she looks amazing.Ross
she's going to be a beauty when your done , i dont know about the teak grab rails though looking long term refinish where stainless is just a polish once in a while , just my two cents great work

I just finished watching ALL of your videos! Can't wait for weekly updates. I also ordered a Christmas gift T-shirt and sticker! Today I happened to start watching MJ Sailing and in their first 2 diy videos included finishing wood with epoxy (your teak in cockpit?) and making cushions - and companion way steps! When I see something that may help with your boat I will send the info!
@jens Yes, and that's a safety concern which is why I prefer wooden grab rails, gotta make sure you can get a good solid grip, one hand for you and one for the boat, at all times. Added. Of course, wood do age so you gotta keep an eye on them.
i love your work ethic, i lose mine half way through but get my second wind and bite the bullet most times, some times i do not, btw, i have an old saying regarding weathermen, fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you, fool me hundreds of times a year, youre a weatherman :)
Looks great. Much progress. On the non-skid, KiwiGrip or other brands, very coarse or aggressive non-skid leaves little valleys that tend to collect dirt and moisture. The least aggressive treatments generally are easier to keep clean, as well as being kinder to knees and barefeet. Looking forward to the decks beams. Maybe contrasting woods, laminated in 1/4" layers? Sorta Danish Modern??? :)
You did a great job as usual on the kiwi grip. Looks great. I think the Sail Life logo looks good, but I think it would be easier to do if it was bigger and would stand out better. I always look forward to your video on Sunday night. A great way to end the week😊
Looking good Mads, One thought though if you ever find your way to the tropics those white decks are going to be blinding. My experience with Kiwi grip is that The more course or you make the texture the more difficult it is to keep clean, cheers
To dispose of the masking tape the best solution I found is a carton box to go around. It works much better than a plastic bag to put waste covered in sikaflex or kiwi grip as it keeps its form and you don't need to go look up for the blue tape in the surroundings. Most of the best tips, I got it from you... maybe I got this one somewhere else! PS: Kiwi grip is great!
Awesome vid as usual! I was wondering where you found the information to do all these repairs as every time I think you hit a wall you seem to know just what to do to fix the issue. You must make the boat uber spiffy for your spiffy lady when she arrives! Cheers!
I like teak grab rails especially if you want to sail in warm weather / near the equator. I've branded myself a number of times on stainless hardware that has been baking in the sun during the summer days. If you can deal with the aesthetic, definitely go with teak
What a difference a day makes. I'm hoping one day to see Athena if you ever get to my part of the world. If you don't have a countersink bit you can use a larger drill to do the same thing. I was also wondering where the mast goes in relation to the kiwigrip?
What an awesom job Mads! Watching the whole process now for the third time and know what a beauty she will become, I must say "well done sir!" :-)
I think absolutely one of the best youtube channels about restoring/refitting the boat.
HANDS DOWN!

you are slowly turning into the Einstein of DIY - well done, Albert!
Never been happier to hear "We're inside the green blob" Love your work sir. The more OCD on the open sea, makes it a safer place to be.
I love the shape of the dodger. You can't have a serious liveaboard/world cruiser without one.
Its nice when Karma comes down in your favor... The boat is looking quite nice, good work.
You need to stop acknowledging the “I’m more clever than you people” unless it’s constructive information. Your validating them by saying it. the KiwiGrip looks great and so glad the weather cooperated. Cheers!
1. The KiwiGrip looks great; all the more so with the 'Sail Life' logo.

Simrad 35 with bluetooth handset is the easy solution :)
"...in the middle of re-fitting..." Yeah, gotta be past 50% now, right Mads? The dodger is SO A-wing! I love it!
I thought putting in the Sail Life logo was going to be a horrible idea that would never look right. I'm happy to admit I was proven wrong. Very nice touch and it looks great!
Thanks now putting Kiwi grip today, love your videos I can find everything.
Your craftsmanship is excellent, the boat looks terrific
A 7 on the spifiness scale? Dude, your attention to detail is nothing short of amazing. I actually held my breath while you peeled the Sail Life logo off.
That was an 11 in my book!
Nonskid looks great, good job! Boat is looking so much better.
Mads,
Really enjoyed your impression of the Monday morning quarterback crowd (LOL).

Sunday is always better with one of your creatively made videos. Athena is looking great.
Mads, good job on the Kiwigrip, I have seen other people even experienced people get it messed up. fair winds.
I really like that dodger, you don't see those often!
Good call on the tent! Use 2 or 3 inch masking tape. Also remember less is more on the kiwi grip start with the smallest notch and you can easily add more later, but it's harder to take away. The boat is looking awesome, but then again you already knew this!

Mads: Same procedure, different hole...
Me: XD
lmao. Great videos as always, a pleasure to watch. Two thumbs up :D
I was about sold on KiwiGrip when Sailing Nanji used it, but now it's a done deal. We're going with KiwiGrip when we get started on the topsides.
As a Kiwi I'm really gripped by how great it looks :-)
Thank you from New Zealand! You have given me the confidence to attempt some repairs on my GOP trailer yacht. You don't profess to be a expert, but you show that anyone can do it if they take their time and think about what they are doing.
100% Spiffy! Looking great Mads.

That KiwiGrip does not look bad at all. Congrats! I find very educative watching you work w/ fiberglass. I need to try that someday.
hello Mads happy Sunday, nice layout of the Kiwi Grip, looks pretty dang spiffy
Thats a special stone indeed. holding up two pads from one location in space time. Impressive!
I went back and watched the video when you first purchased the boat, you gave a short tour then. I've said it before but it's worth saying again this has been an amazing transformation. extremely dang spiffy job on the logo in the KiwiGrip!
I really like your logo in the KiwiGrip ! The angle of the camera did not do it justice !
Looking good. If it was my boat I'd go for the teak rails. A small amount of exterior teak is not a big maintenance chore and I find them more comfortable in hand. They also look spiffy!
Hoppy Birfday to Mateo in NOLA!
I used to live in N.O.

Buck Rogers just called, he said Starbuck wants the roof of his Starfighter back. The Cylons are about to attack. Awesome looking boat ⛵️
i did't know buck and starbuck knew each other. or are they related? :-)
Same production company, apparently they recycled the same props between the two series.
Living up in the northern latitudes tenting the cabin tub was the right choice at this time of year. To make the patches smaller next time just fold it into quarters and the make the cuts on the arc.
Kiwi grip looks the same as tred grip, small granules of white rubber.
I applied my cat in 1999 & it was still going strong but gave it a freshen up this year...cheers
it's so exciting to see how far athena has come since she left scotland. keep up the good work!!
Great job on the Kiwi Grip! Really looks super! Just a personal opinion, I love the teak hand rails but wouldn't put them on my boat. She is definitely getting shipshape. Keep up the great work.
Leave it alone - looks great !
Your editing is magnificent. You are a true "gambler" ... you know what to throw away and what to keep! Keep it up!
You are getting some great results.
Have you considered grabbing some lumber and building yourself a staircase beside the boat?
Might be safer than the "ladder of potential calamity".
Thumbs up.
You should be quite proud, beautiful work
Green Blob lol!! Love it ;-)
Dont feed the comment trolls...great job on the Kiwigrip!
Splendid. Great result and think the logo is a smashing success. PDS!
Super job with the new grip!
Hi Maz,I just wanted to congratulate you on the progress you are making on your new boat. well done indeed. Ive picked up some very good tips from your exploits and enjoy your unique approach to DIY boat renovations. Best of luck in the future.Steveeasy
I agree. Love the Dodger. Sloped glass reminds me of 70 and early 80 sci fiction shows.
Beautiful, I love your videos. Love the fact that you did away with the exterior speakers. There’s nothing more annoying that loud music on the, well anywhere 😎
I used KiwiGrip on my H28 around 4 years ago. Still grippy and it wears quite well... So easy to apply.
Buddy. One thing I never consider good prep including watching temp and humidity and controlling or manipulating a waste of time,it is the key to a good job in my game.Well done and she looks amazing.Ross
That boat is getting spiffy as hell, I am looking forward to see you cast off to your adventures!
Love the dodger shape also. very sci-fi. i like teak and wood, but with that dodger shape, go with stainless grab handles.
Agreed. That dodger is a fantastic shape.
she's going to be a beauty when your done , i dont know about the teak grab rails though looking long term refinish where stainless is just a polish once in a while , just my two cents great work
I think it looks really nice. Especially for your first application. After you have walked on it for a few months some of the texture won't be uniform anyway. Great work as always.
Nice work on the non skid! Athena is looking awesome!
Definitely go for stainless steel handrails. It saves teak trees and is much easier to maintain!
ilCigno plus it looks more like a star fighter :-)
But is harder to hang onto with wet hands.
@jens
Yes, and that's a safety concern which is why I prefer wooden grab rails, gotta make sure you can get a good solid grip, one hand for you and one for the boat, at all times.
Added.
Of course, wood do age so you gotta keep an eye on them.
Stainless can be very hot/cold depending on weather conditions but would love a lot better with the other hardware and port surrounds.
i love your work ethic, i lose mine half way through but get my second wind and bite the bullet most times, some times i do not, btw, i have an old saying regarding weathermen, fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you, fool me hundreds of times a year, youre a weatherman :)
Beautifully done Mads.
Very Very Spiffy Madds Looking Great
Looking good Mads, One thought though if you ever find your way to the tropics those white decks are going to be blinding. My experience with Kiwi grip is that The more course or you make the texture the more difficult it is to keep clean, cheers
Man that Kiwi Grip looks great
Love the logo!
That's a supper spiffy logo! awesome job. I'll be doing mine in a few months. Not looking forward to it. You make it look easy. Peace from Allegro
Mads you never ever disappoint. You always brighten up my Sunday !
+1 for stainless grab rails!
You are one amazing guy - all looking great!
Awesome vid as usual! I was wondering where you found the information to do all these repairs as every time I think you hit a wall you seem to know just what to do to fix the issue. You must make the boat uber spiffy for your spiffy lady when she arrives! Cheers!
Bravo, you are doing a fantastic job!
Great work!!!
Ps. The tip of a large drill bit works well if you are wanting to clean out those “pesky” holes 😉
I like teak grab rails especially if you want to sail in warm weather / near the equator. I've branded myself a number of times on stainless hardware that has been baking in the sun during the summer days. If you can deal with the aesthetic, definitely go with teak
Loved the GOT reference :D Winter is coming! Looking great!
You are nothing less than a perfectionist!
:-D
Love that logo!
Tell the haters to do one,you doing a great job m8.
15:44 Damn that looks good.
What a difference a day makes. I'm hoping one day to see Athena if you ever get to my part of the world. If you don't have a countersink bit you can use a larger drill to do the same thing. I was also wondering where the mast goes in relation to the kiwigrip?
