There is a significant cost associated with deploying systems like the S-500 which may not be obvious to those outside the US Defense industry. Developing weapon systems for use against theoretical targets is significantly more difficult than developments driven by hard data. If it hasn't already, the S-500 will be fully characterized, frequencies recorded, and physical characteristics mapped. That hard data will be passed along to small teams of truly innovative American, British, French, and German engineers working in their respective countries. These multi-national innovators will develop or modify weapons to neutralize the S-500 on a compressed timeline, effectively rendering the system obsolete. While technically competent, and quite brilliant in a wide range of domains, the Russians are simply outclassed by the sheer mass of engineering talent available to Western democracies with their combined $50 Trillion GDP . For example, during the Iraq war many of the engineers developing intelligence analysis and exploitation tools were not from the US Defense industry, rather they were millennials from smaller, more agile American commercial software companies.

The cost, in every regard, becomes too much to sustain for the invading state and despite it's much greater military power they are forced to withdraw without a major tactical defeat in battle. That point will arrive fast due to the hyper intensity of this war.

We're recapitulating the late 1930s. How did all that work out?
Europe has evidently decided that it can no longer be dependent on the US. For obvious reasons. It's exercising greater initiative within existing frameworks but it's not a unified polity. It has cracks and divisions all over the place for the bad guys to work on.
Somehow those countries which will not be enslaved have to develop a new, sustained and more aggressively proactive strategy.
