As someone who has lived in Shanghai for the past 15 years I can definitely say it is cheap. I am from Australia and it's about 1/2 to live in Shanghai as a comparison. I travel in Asia frequently for work and would say Shanghai is now cheaper than Singapore, HK, All of Japan, All of Taiwan, even BKK and HCMC are more expensive for some things eg. Eating, public transport, taxis, and rent. Yes, if you live Jingan you will pay.....but Minhang, Huangpu, Pudong etc are great value .... especially rent. We rent a great 3b 2b 127 meter apartment in a nice complex fully furnished for 1200usd per month. (And prices are dropping). Here's a quick idea in USD Metro ride = 60c to $1.max A bottle of water =.30c everywhere Taxi 3kms or less = $2 Big bowl of noodles with meat/veg = $4-$5 Big Mac=.$3.5 A pint of beer = $3 - $9 Beer in 711 = $1.5 And the cheapest is supermarket fresh meat n vegetables. Hope this helps
Thank you so much for this video. This video is super relevant and allows us, people considering moving there, to get an insight of the cost of living! Great video 🌟💫
Thank you for posting this. I've lived in hong kong and would always think shanghai is more expensive / the same but actually it seems like its quite far from it depending how you live!
Very nice video, you manage to live a good life at a very low cost. I lived in Shanghai before and I spent a lot more but it all depends on the lifestyle and food we eat.
very nice detailed breakdown haha (only thing missed out is the location of your apartment) Also a western asian living in shanghai right now Shanghai is really the best city ive been to in the world and I've traveled a lot
Thank you. :) People are friendly in that they will not bother you. Some people will look at you a little bit since I would say that at least 99.9% of population in China are Chinese. They will help you if you ask for help but it's not like people will come up and help you if you are struggling. But overall no problem at all if you can take care of yourself!
I think food prices has increased compared to last time I was here (5 years ago), maybe 25%. but compared to the west (Im from Sweden), I think its very affordable. Don't know anything about salary inflation.
It is a paradise for foreigners making 6 fig USD (but paid in RMB). Taxi and ubers are cheap online shopping and fast food is fast and cheap Can easily earn extra money on the side Can save much more money and retire early compare to the west.

The way I learned it was by using 2 resources. 1. Udemy - Here they have a lot of great courses. I took many different courses here in Python and Javascript. Each course is around 10USD and thye have discounts going on all the time. 2. Codewars - This is where I found coding problems to solve. These are the kind of problems they ask during job interviews. There are many other websites for this, you can just search for coding interview problem websites. Then to build a portfolio of projects to put on my Resume I just looked up a lot of tutorials on youtube, for example I created a facebook and spotify clone. And then I also included my Codewars profile as proof that I can write code.
Hello, My girlfriend helped me find the apartment and she used an app called ziroom. You will need a Chinese phone number and also be able to speak Chinese. Cant help much sorry.
It is but you then lose the deposit which is usually 1 month rent. Right now I rented a apartment in Guangzhou and I signed a 1 year contract which i then cancelled early so lost the deposit. My suggestion for finding an apartment is to either have a friend in China help you or go to a "real east shop" like lian jia when you arrive in China, and ask them to help you. I wouldn't even bother trying to find an apartment online since there can be a lot of scams.
Housing you're lucky... I was there for 10 years and the cheapest 1bdr apt was 8k ( Gao You RD). Also... Clubbing... Didn't calculate? Also clothing (it's not just a hat). Then you have the insurance... Then slightly more dinners out... Then the lunch & breakfast aren't that that cheap neither... So I'd say you'd need around 25-30k (RMB) or around 3-4 k USD to live good... Not luxury but good👍
Thanks for comment :) When I searched there were a lot under 6k per month, I also lived in an old building. Went clubbing once and probably never doing it again since smoking was allowed inside. Most people were smoking. I have somehow really managed to remove the desire to buy new clothes. I can promise that the food prices are a accurate. 25k RMB per month would mean like eating out every day, every meal. That would make me stressed since the food is not that healthy when eating out.
Its difficult for a non Chinese, but my girlfriend (who is Chinese) used an App call Ziroom but you need an Chinese phone number to register. If I were to find an apratment again alone then I would go to China and go to one of the real estate shops like Lianjia, there are other once also but thats the biggest one, and then ask them for help. They will be happy to help since their fee is 1 month of the rent price.

Awesome video, great production quality! How friendly is it there for non nationals?

Lol Shangai is more expensive than Spain, I pay 3,5 for my telephone, and vegetables and fruit are under 2 (if you buy seasonal).
Aha no idea it was like that in Spain :)
How you get free internet though, what vpn you use?
Internet was included in the apartment and then for VPN i use Astrill VPN.
thanks for the insight, btw why do you have a Scandinavian/Northern European accent? :)
well he said in the video, he lives in sweeden, he's paying for two rents...
Grew up in Sweden so thats why. :)

Hi I’m a student. Can you help me find a cheapest rent?
Hello, My girlfriend helped me find the apartment and she used an app called ziroom. You will need a Chinese phone number and also be able to speak Chinese. Cant help much sorry.
I think if you rent for 3 months, they will charge more
Yes definitely, if you pay for example 1 year or longer its gonna be cheaper, which is what most landlords prefer.
Is it possible to rent an apartment for 1 month?
It is but you then lose the deposit which is usually 1 month rent. Right now I rented a apartment in Guangzhou and I signed a 1 year contract which i then cancelled early so lost the deposit.

If you just move a few stops away your rent will halve.
How did you find your apartment it's really very good for only 6000 RMB With water, electricity and wifi included😮😮
