I think that's right. The rent is the biggest expense living in a big city like Shanghai. Everything else is quite manageable compare to other big cities around the world 🌎
I'm thinking about retiring in Asia somewhere. What type of paperwork is needed to live in China? Type of Visas, how often you have to renew and how to renew, that sort of stuff. I don't see many videos about that.
South Florida small house a month: $350 for electricity (6months out the year heat), $140 for water/garbage. $60 for fiber internet (300mbits), $40 for cellular, $130 for car insurance (could be $400 if you're under 25) Rent for 80sqm unfurnished apt would be $1800+ with a 12moth lease. (Water is included)
@@VickyHui July was $443.96, it's so hot so A/C is running 24/7, the bill will go down to $140 for 5 months out the year when it's better weather, can't wait for Nov1.
It is rather cheap to live in Shanghai as a young single professional. Awesome choice for someone seeking a more dynamic life style. However, when it comes to raising a family and other big ticket items such as buying a home or a car, healthcare, and education, it becomes exponentially unaffordable rapidly for expats. Not the best choice of value for families......
That might be true but I think most expat with families comes with family package so their company will compensate most of the expenses. In regards of buying houses it's quite expensive in Shanghai. Unless you want to stay in China long term not many expats will buy houses in China.
@@VickyHui frankly speaking, salary-wise, Shanghai is not bad at all wrt maintaining a normal life style. But to substantiate the same life quality (with a family) as in most US cities, you would probably need substantially more money. What I saw was that these generous expat packages were disappearing (as local talents can do the job equally well, or preference over local business experience, or whatever reasons). It is still fun to work in Shanghai and I wish I would have the chance to do so again - would I relocate my family to SH permanently? Pretty unlikely :)
I born in shanghai and live in shanghai. If kid get education in gov school,it cost very very low price. And if you have insurance from job. Medical service cost is super low too. In gov hospital, a 1mm ct scan cost 250rmb=40US$ and can cover by gov insurance. You can get CT scan in 3 days after seeing the doctor in shanghai hospital.
@@MrPaddydan Hi~ I have only been to Hangzhou 3 times. I love the mountain there and the variety of scenery. I don't mind living in Hangzhou if I got a job there. But Shanghai would be my first choice!
That's right! Shanghai is now most expensive city in the world... Luckily there are still lots of cheap ways to live in Shanghai!! Are you in Shanghai as well?
@@terrafoodtravel6244 Cool!! And do you think cooking at home is cheaper than ordering takeout? sometimes I find cooking for 1 person is more expensive! (or depend on what you like to eat)
Is 10000 CNY net per month enough to stay in Shanghai and have a bit of savings as a single expat? Breakfast & Lunch, Transport, accommodation will be provided by Company.
Rent is a big part of living cost in China. So if rent, Breakfast & Lunch, Transport is covered by your company, you should be ok to be comfortable. However, depends where you live, eating out could be expensive in Shanghai, like having a drink at a bar - 1 beer is 50 RMB. Being able to save or not depends on your lifestyle and location.
You know a lot about Shanghai. Very informative. So many videos are just university students talking about culture shock. My grocery bill would be higher. I need a western supermarket with imported food from UK

@@VickyHui I’ve been to Shanghai many times before as a tourist. Living would be different. Amazing video.
Grrrr That's a bad news for sure... But we are very blessed to be healthy and able to go out everyday not in lockdown like most of US and Europe! So lets enjoy Shanghai!
Shanghai is 2nd place in first tier city list, so rent reflects it. In China you can go low rent in really old neighborhoods and still be safe, in USA you would probably end up dead within a year if you lived in the "slums."
How is your water bill so cheap? I was living in Hangzhou, Shangcheng District last year, and the water bill alone was like 50 - 60 some yuan per month, and that was just usually taking one shower a day and barely using it other times.
