I saw an interview the other day and the band said when they opened up for Led Zeppelin in '69/70 that Zeppelin's manager unplugged the power when they were on stage because the crowd was getting too excited. Terry knight (the manager of GFRR) went on stage to tell the crowd that they had just been kicked off the stage - and the crowd started rioting. That's how powerful these guys were back in the day.
Welcome to the Railroad, brother! These guys have been my all-time favorite band since I was 14 and I'm 64 now. I never get tired of hearing or seeing these guys and I wish they were still around as the original Grand Funk Railroad. It's an absolute crime that they are not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That institution is totally political and I don't recognize them as the true Authority of rock and roll. Keep it "Shinin' On", baby! Another fantastic song by them. Please check it out.
Mark Farner...one of the most musically gifted performers to ever walk on a stage anywhere in the world...lead vocals, lead guitar, keyboards, drums, harmonica, and all at a very high level...and he wrote 90 % of the songs for GFR. Every song played at Shea stadium by Grand Funk was written by Mark Farner. Unbelievably talented man...
One could argue there are better bands I suppose, but I don’t know how anyone could say a band put more heart and soul into any performance. Just amazing
Agreed. The musicianship is nothing more than average, at best. However, they more than make up for that with their heart, and grit. This is all about having a good time, and boy howdy, they deliver!
I knew these guys back in the day. Mark Farner from Flint Michigan, Donnie Brewer from Swartz Creek Michigan, they use to practice in Donnie's garage. Love them
Dude, I said the same exact thing about being the greatest performance I've ever seen! I was totally blown away when I first saw it! The most amazing thing is that the guitar player and the drummer are 21 years old and the bassist is 18 years old at the time of this video! I saw a lower talking about better bands today, not even close.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I knew this was one you would love. The stank face, the toothpick, letting it play the whole way through with no pause. The influence they had on all the bands that followed them is part of rock history and yet they can’t get elected into the R&R Hall of Fame. Plenty more of their catalogue to pick from. Next suggestion would be Heartbreaker.
I was in high school when Grand Funk hit the scene and their early albums were constantly on my turntable. I'm so glad that this video was shot with such quality and fidelity. It captures that time as well as anything I've seen on the 'Tube. Great performance by an unheralded and mostly forgotten trio of boys from Flint, MI. The guitarist, Mark Farner, also played organ on the early LPs. Lots of talent rolled up into three guys! Thanks so much for reacting to this!
They are from Flint Michigan, they are one of many groups that came out of Detroit rock'n roll scene during the 60s and 70s. You must check out Detroit rock'n roll.
Try listening to this a hundred times enjoying it without ever seen the video... It's through reactions like yours I get to enjoy this like I've never enjoyed it. I think yours is the third or fourth time I've seen this reacted to and I am always amazed
The audio quality of this video is pretty good. I can only imagine what it would have been like sitting in that studio audience, in front of Mark, Don, and Mel jamming this tune.
I absolutely LOVE Grand Funk Railroad! "Some Kind of Wonderful" & "Locomotion" ALWAYS feel so right! I ask you, how can anybody say that we DIDN'T HAVE the best music ever in the 60's & 70's? Get outta here with that bullshit! These guys led the way for lots of other groups but were greatly underappreciated imho. BANGERZ! 🔥🤘
I Am A 57 Year Old Black Man I Grew Up In The 60's Listening To BB King, Booker T & The MG's, Motown, Earth Wind & Fire, The Isley Brothers, Chaka Khan, Carole King, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple And On And On. Brother Do Yourself A Favor And Listen To The STUDIO VERSION Of This Song The Guitar Solo Stands Out More As It Is More Clear And Crisp Along With The Bass And Drums. For Me And My 2 Brothers Grand Funk Railroad Were The Earth Wind & Fire Of Rock Music. My Oldest Brother Saw Them In Concert In Their Prime And He Told Me That In Addition To His White Man Afro The Drummer Don Brewer Would Also Wear African Dashikis. In An Interview Don Brewer Said The Band Was Heavily Influenced By Wilson Pickett, Motown etc. Don Brewer Was One Of 3(THREE) Drummers That I'm Aware Of (BUDDY MILES & PETER RIVERA of RARE EARTH are The Other 2) Who Could Play The Drums And Sing At The Same Time Very Difficult To Do( And Yet JOHN BONHAM Is Widely Regarded As The Best Drummer Of All Time I Question That) No Matter What Song From What Group You Want To React To Always Listen To The STUDIO VERSION First. Other Songs From Grand Funk Railroad I Would Recommend For You To React To Are: THE RAILROAD FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL PEOPLE LET'S STOP THE WAR LONELIEST RIDER. Whenever Any Public Figure Or In The Case Of Grand Funk Railroad A Music Group Speaks Out Against The Government, People In Power Then You Run The Risk Of Being Ostracized For Doing So. If You Listen Closely To The Lyrics Of PEOPLE LET'S STOP THE WAR & LONLIEST RIDER You'll Understand What I Mean. In My Opinion These 2 Songs Are Why Grand Funk Railroad Is Not In the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
Thanks for your comment, brother!...I needed to read something like that on behalf of, imho, the greatest band ever to hail from this side of the pond, in a time when the British invasion was setting the standards for r&r, and folks wouldn't even pay mind to some guy named Jimi Hendrix, who eventually had to go to England to make himself listened to and respected and revered by his peers.... I'm so glad you said what you said about bands like Rare Earth (one of my all times faves too) and drummers like buddy miles, who by the way, you cite as the perfect example for a singing drummer, specially when it comes to, imho again, the best album I recall of Jimi Hendrix, with the Band Of Gypsies....Thank you again, bro...you sure bring back memories...Grand Funk sure brings back memories...from times long gone, but never forgotten...
Hey brother Vince you got me by a few years but we on the same page when it comes down to the music you are right the studio version is a lot better keep jamming man
Yes you are right my brother.mark just tells us like it is and the people in government.dount like to hear the truth. I have met mark a few times.he has signed things for me.he is the nicest person you will ever know.love the original band 🎸🎵🎤☮✝💖mark is still out there playing.
One of the most amazing music performances ever capture for TV yet its only been in recent years that a lot of people have rediscovered it or seen it for the 1st time because of You Tube postings.
A 3 MAN BAND ! Are you kidding me ..There will never be a sound like this EVER ! You had to have talent back in the day. I feel sorry for those kids today because THIS is what music sounds like
A time when music just reached right inside. I was a child in the 60's and heard music like this daily. My mother was very open minded and loved Blues, Hard and Soft rock, and Gospel. My brother is 12 years my senior and part of the hippie generation. There was no time when my mom wasn't dancing around the house with the radio going, or my brother playing guitar hooked up to the amps and blasting his stereo. This is not to cause a dispute but I miss this music. I reach as far back to Howling Wolf, Elvis and go from there up until about U2. Most (not all) music that came out after those years didn't move the same way.
Boom! TYVM! Man this song always leaves me drained.....emotionally, physically and mentally. So freaken' good. Can you believe GFR is not in the HoF? Grand Funk Railroad for the rock and roll Hall of Fame 2020!!!!!!!
Bass player was 18 in 1969. Other 2 guys were either 21 or 22 during that year. I saw them that year. Loudest concert I have ever attended. I haven’t listened to them much since those days but I do remember the show that these guys put on a hell of a show.
Great version but there is another one out the on youtube, the video has kind of a yellowish tint to it. The part where Frank starts laying it down and doing his sideways dance while playing is pretty cool too. Both are great. GFR is badass. I bet the studio version when driving in your car would pick up the bass better and you get to hear them all in sync but I am not complaining at all. I had to watch this 3 times in a row. Good job Drama and thanks.
This is probably my all time favorite performance to watch reactors have their F***ing minds BLOWN! GRAND FUNK RAILROAD! You simply MUST do more, they have A LOT to offer... Start with studio version of FOOTSTOMPIN MUSIC, because..... That's EXACTLY what it IS! WELCOME TO GFR!!!!
They usually played this for 15 minutes at live concerts. They have a huge amount of great songs, live especially so. They don't have FUNK in their name for nothing!! You will hear lots of great music and funky sounds when you check out more Grand Funk Railroad. I recommend another video, T.N.U.C. live from 1974. Wait til you see the drummer's afro in that video! LOL And the drum solo I think will leave your jaw on the floor. They are a fantastic band and I will be looking forward to more of your reactions to GFR man!
GFR were one of my favorite band when I wasn’t high school. I used to dance my ass of in my bedroom playing there live album over and over. Mark Farmer could do no wrong as far as I’m concerned You should react to “Foot Stomping Music”, great song.
saw them live in the 70s, they played like this all the time. They were great performers with a lot of skill. Mark wrote, sang, played several instruments. Watch the live Heartbreaker, I'm your Captain, Footstompin Music, they added another member. They sold out shea stadium faster than the beatles. They were the opening for Led Zepplin and their manager kicked them off the stage so they wouldn't out perform his band. They were very popular, I think because most of their songs were long they didn't get a lot of play time on the standard radio stations
I'm an old fart that was lucky enough to see them Live on Three occasions. In fact, they were the very first Rock concert I ever saw that had a cool opening act that did fairly well but didn't last too long called Bloodrock. Their big hit D.O.A was fairly bizarre and blew some minds back in the day... th-cam.com/video/XhtoRlVUPo0/w-d-xo.html
Mark Farner is a beast of a front-man 😎🎸 GFR.... one of the greatest live bands ever ! 3pc. Band with 2 lead singers & everyone a true master of their craft ✌😎 Sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles ( Yes The Beatles 😉 ) Request: GRF - Heartbreaker ( live ) 1974 Other hits.... We're An American Band I'm Your Captain / Closer To Home The Locomotion
"It is what it is" Thank you for a great reaction. I've always loved this band and they put out a lot of studio as well as live material. I particularly like the album Survival.
Thanks so much for playing GFR. A group of these guys and respect them so much. They're all still living back in Flint Michigan. Still perform too. They were tight and high energy. Great memories. Thanks man.
A friend introduced me to this band years ago, their songs are still on my playlist. I think you should Investigate them further. Heart Breaker, I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home, Footstomping Music are just a few songs that live up to the band's name Grand Funk Railroad.
I love your honesty when you're reacting to these older relics! I rocked to this when I was 8 yrs old. Prince, RIP, loved GFR too..you can tell from his funky style..his riffs and moves..you get it!
Thank you for posting Grand Funk Railroad. I grew up listening to Grand Funk. They were the standard that bands had to live up to as far as live performances. A great time for music and talent. Long live Grand Funk.
The good ole stankface! lol. The moments when you know a jam hits the soul and spirit so much and there is nothing left to do, but look as if something stunk in funk!
Mel Schacter on the Bass was known as “The God Of Thunder” at the ripe old age of 19 back when this was new. You gotta remember this was an audition in front of the biggest Record Execs of the day just to put this performance into perspective. Mark Farner never left anything on the table when he strapped on that guitar and harmonica! And they do a song about weed he wrote for his girl from jail! BALLS.
Great, great reaction. This brings back some pretty grand memories thank you very much. They were such a fantastic band and get too little recognition. You have had an awesome lineup today, I feel like you are pulling right from my playlist. Check out Heartbreaker.
I love your reaction to this. They are incredible they were my kind of music.I loved to dance and this was my favorite. To change the subject you make me laugh and it's not an easy thing these days. Thanks for all you do.🤗😄
I had to wait 50 years to see this "live". It hit me just like it hit you. Then I learned that GFR is Not in the R&R HOF. Truth is stranger than fiction.
Hey, forgot to recommend a couple of my favorites from this band too. Check out "Some kind of wonderful" or "We're an "American Band" and "Heartbreaker" ect. ect. ect. , just to name a few. I WILL B WATCHING !!!!! ✌
Mark Farmer was a beast. First five albums he wrote 90% of the songs, played bass, keyboards, guitar, harp, lead vocals and party master. But the entire band had talent out the kazoo. They gang-raped your ears and left you in a heap gasping for air.
IMO, this is the greatest song GFR ever performed ! Thanks for featuring it !
Best rock, best funk best blues, best everything!!!!!
A three man band in 1969 doing that ???? Absolutely incredible !!!
They put the funk in funk !!!!
In the early days, these guys were so hard, they even blew big acts like Zep off the stage. The Power of Funk!
Welcome to the Railroad, brother! These guys have been my all-time favorite band since I was 14 and I'm 64 now. I never get tired of hearing or seeing these guys and I wish they were still around as the original Grand Funk Railroad. "Grand Funk Railroad just put the funk in the funk" "That is the funkiest jam I have ever heard" Perfect!
One could argue there are better bands I suppose, but I don’t know how anyone could say a band put more heart and soul into any performance. Just amazing
I think the STAGE needed a cigarette after that...
Yes...one could argue, but what would be the point...?
@@guidosarducci Yeah, too busy to argue: the groove is real & we're too busy hangin' out to argue...
Agreed. The musicianship is nothing more than average, at best. However, they more than make up for that with their heart, and grit. This is all about having a good time, and boy howdy, they deliver!
That face you made when he started playing the harmonica was priceless.
"Lead vocals, lead guitar, live performance... and he's STILL bored??"
You have heard all kinds of Funk music and now you can say you have just heard some "Grand Funk" ! Oh hell Yeah!!!
I knew these guys back in the day. Mark Farner from Flint Michigan, Donnie Brewer from Swartz Creek Michigan, they use to practice in Donnie's garage. Love them

@BARRY SCHMUTTER...the hall of fame doesn't deserve GFR!
Tell it. Your the best!
The power of music to move people or turn you inside out as you said. These 3 put everything they had into their performances!
That Messenger guitar had a sound all it's own. Three guys . Live . One take .
You said it all! Phenomenal!!
I went to 8 Grand Funk concerts, back in the day. I was personally worn out after each one... WOW!
1 of the best live shows in the day... Seeing is believing.... Thanks , still dig it ... Timeless GOLD
I saw them in 73 when I got home from Vietnam. They absolutely tore the house down. This performance is 3 musicians at the top of their game.
And that was a 3 piece band great i grew up with this music where they could play and sing
Fellow Buckeye, keep playin’ the jams! GFR gave us rock, funk, R&B, blues and metal all in one! Been a fan since I was 12 and still am at 62!
They were phenomenal!!! Leaves you breathless doesn't it?!😉😉
The salute at the end says it all. LOVE GFR.

I saw them live in 1975... my ears are still ringing :)
They are from Flint Michigan, they are one of many groups that came out of Detroit rock'n roll scene during the 60s and 70s. You must check out Detroit rock'n roll.
Hell yeah... Detroit was THE place long before Seattle got the reputation for it.
Psssst... watch a movie called "A Band Called Death". It may change your life, a little.
You're welcome.
Yes indeed. Having come from Flint myself, I've always been proud to call GFR my "homies".
Lol! Loved your reaction! We are really lucky that this clip is in existence and has survived! Keep Listening!
Try listening to this a hundred times enjoying it without ever seen the video... It's through reactions like yours I get to enjoy this like I've never enjoyed it. I think yours is the third or fourth time I've seen this reacted to and I am always amazed
Perfection from all three. That bass player was unreal though.
The audio quality of this video is pretty good. I can only imagine what it would have been like sitting in that studio audience, in front of Mark, Don, and Mel jamming this tune.

Right on!
Great, yes? I saw them in 1974 and they put every fiber of their being into their performance! Amazing sound out of a band made up of only three guys.
Bass player was 18 in 1969. Other 2 guys were either 21 or 22 during that year. I saw them that year. Loudest concert I have ever attended. I haven’t listened to them much since those days but I do remember the show that these guys put on a hell of a show.
The BEST version EVER!!!
Mark’s guitar tone is distinctive, raw and sexy.
Great version but there is another one out the on youtube, the video has kind of a yellowish tint to it. Grand Funk is one of the best bands ever 👏👏👏👏👏 Great Reaction
So funky, I get a full-on workout just watching this!!!!
This is probably my all time favorite performance to watch reactors have their F***ing minds BLOWN!
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD!
You simply MUST do more, they have A LOT to offer...
Start with studio version of FOOTSTOMPIN MUSIC,

Top 2.. That's awesome brother... Farner is a living legend.. Please check out "Nothing is the Same" on the Closer To Home album..
GFR were one of my favorite band when I wasn’t high school. I used to dance my ass of in my bedroom playing there live album over and over. Mark Farmer could do no wrong as far as I’m concerned You should react to “Foot Stomping Music”, great song.
My 18-year-old self still lusts after Mel Schacher's 18-year-old self and the way he handles that bass. Mercy...
I noticed! Mercy is right!
saw them live in the 70s, they played like this all the time. They were great performers with a lot of skill. Mark wrote, sang, played several instruments. 3 of the most kick-ass performers to hit the stage in rock history! never made the R&RHOF though! hmmmm, sounds like politics to me.
You've got that right Maureen, Mark Farners guitar is in the R&R hof, not GFR or Mark himself. A travesty to say the least...
they just pissed of the music indusrty just like pearl jam did and captain beefheart
What a great time to be alive!!
Maureen Tavares the Rock Hall OF Fame is an insult to Rock and Roll. They induct mediocre bands and ignore classic bands more deserving.😡😡😡
"It is what is is." Nothing need more to be said. Great comment. :)
If this JAM doesn't move you and groove you--YOU DON'T HAVE A PULSE!
Love your reaction… your expressions were priceless… made me smile. Loved this band since I was a teenager!
I love that band and that tune. I have worn out more than one copy of their live album "Caught In The Act"
GREAT, HUH? I have had the pleasure of knowing their music for over 50 years !!!! Check out their other BIG HITS !!! ENJOY !!!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVEEEEEEE THEM!!!!!
Mark Farner is a beast of a front-man 😎🎸

Thank you for a great reaction.
I've always loved this band and they put out a lot of studio as well as live material.
I particularly like the album Survival.
Thanks so much for playing GFR. A group of these guys and respect them so much. They're all still living back in Flint Michigan. Still perform too. They were tight and high energy. Great memories. Thanks man.

Thank you for posting Grand Funk Railroad. I grew up listening to Grand Funk. They were the standard that bands had to live up to as far as live performances. A great time for music and talent. Long live Grand Funk.
Of course I had to watch to verify my suspicion, but I had a feeling this one was going to get you movin'. 😏
Absolutely LOVED your reaction to my very favorite Concert Band!!!!! Most energized Live Band ever! Just 3 in the Band-AMAZING!

Most folks don’t know they had like 10 Platinum albums by 1975!
Awesome song bro thanks enjoyed watching this with you.
Great, great reaction. This brings back some pretty grand memories thank you very much. They were such a fantastic band and get too little recognition. You have had an awesome lineup today, I feel like you are pulling right from my playlist. Check out Heartbreaker.
The harmonica came out and YOUR FACE!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Priceless!
I love your reaction to this. They are incredible they were my kind of music.I loved to dance and this was my favorite. To change the subject you make me laugh and it's not an easy thing these days. Thanks for all you do.🤗😄
Frank Farner is a beast and entertaining too. Your reaction to the harmonica suddenly showing up is priceless, Drama.
Lol...everybody hits pause on the Afro ;))
Ajajaja great reaction, and grand funk, incredible...
this song kicks ass , always did . wore this out in the summer of 70. Awesome!
It ... it just doesn't funkn' stop!
Jan 1970 my best friend and I saw them live at the teen center......stood next to the stage. Still have ticket stub!
It takes my breath away! I have seen this numerous times and everytime I have a huge "let out" breath at the end...amazing :)
I had to wait 50 years to see this "live". It hit me just like it hit you.
Then I learned that GFR is Not in the R&R HOF. Truth is stranger than fiction.
Keep up the great work and man you really do know how to pick the great ones
Hey, forgot to recommend a couple of my favorites from this band too. Check out "Some kind of wonderful" or "We're an "American Band" and "Heartbreaker" ect. ect. ect. , just to name a few. I WILL B WATCHING !!!!! ✌
These guys can do it ALL they are real tuff. Soul R and B rock and roll just 3 guys making all that . Unbelievable. So good.👍🎸🎼🎶🎤 Makes me happy
"What's the symptoms?"
"You're looking at the symptoms!"
😀😁😊😂
Those three guys are so in sync! What they do together is truly remarkable! ❤️❤️❤️
Love this so much I can have this for breakfast everyday. God Lordy it feels good to have a pulse. Amen ya one more time.
Wow, another one I've never heard of! Keep them coming. Yep that's a very nice afro.
Nice to spend 12 minutes with you pal! You're reacting exactly how i did In 1969. ( and still do 50 years later!
Mark Farmer was a beast. First five albums he wrote 90% of the songs, played bass, keyboards, guitar, harp, lead vocals and party master. But the entire band had talent out the kazoo. They gang-raped your ears and left you in a heap gasping for air.
Its fucking rock n roll 😈🤘🎸
