I absolutely love the way Geddy plays while Alex is soloing. I'm a bass player myself, and my first instinct is to simplify my playing when someone else is soloing, but if you're a beast like Geddy or Geezer Butler you can actually increase the complexity of your line and elevate the music that much more.

All of them were self taught as teenagers and came together as friends (Alex and Geddy) with the desire to play to a standard as their mentors (example Genesis and Yes). So when Neil came along, they had someone to grow with musically without any limits, all creative to do what they loved and wanted too. You definitely need to see the live in Rio version! Crowd blew the band’s mind! Epic is the only word. Ok, Badass is another word. 😆👍
Imagine a stadium full to the brink with thousands of VERY EXCITED Brazilians, who thought they’d never in their lifetime, get to see RUSH in concert because RUSH had never tour there before! It is Full On, Maximum Vibe, High Energy, RUSH Night! They Went Off!!
Made us North Americans fan look lazy. 😆

YYZ is the airport code for Toronto. The song is about the excitement of leaving to and return from a tour.

They were flying in a small plane back to Toronto at the end of a tour and they heard the airport broadcasting it's call sign "YYZ" in morse code on the radio. They just looked at each other and were like, "Yup, that's gonna be a song". Typical story for Rush. So many layers, so much intelligence, so much raw effing talent.

Thank you! You nailed it. I was 14 when this came out. Bought the vinyl, still have it. It was the "deep cut" on Moving Pictures that only peeps who bought the record would know. It was (among other classic rock tunes) an introduction to orchestral arrangement, to movements of a symphony, to radical expansion of sounds from one instrument (Lifeson's guitar). You are right.. only the masters could conceive of such a journey. You are virtually never bored in this tune. The story it tells is complete, a full narrative appetizer, main course, dessert, coffee/tea/liqueur for your ears.

The first time I saw RUSH was around 1977 sometime after the release of fly by night, I had not heard of them, they were one of the two opening acts. Being a aspiring young drummer I was floored. I think they opened for Billy Squire I was a fan of the band he was in earlier named Piper

Another amazing subliminal aspect of this song is the changing styles within the song, like Alexs solo that sounds middle eastern, and its because airports have people from all over the world going through them..coming and going..so the song has different feels to it as a result. Thats the brilliance of Rush. Their music can be taken for just the music itself..or it can be interpreted in an emotionally connected way. When you listen to Neils lyrics they tell a story that you get sucked into. The Trees..a song about oak and maple trees fighting over sunlight is far deeper on a social level than as just a song.

I’m late to ur channel but I’m subbed now. YYZ is a fantastic instrumental but their best one IMO was 2 albums before Moving Pictures. You really should check out La Villa Strangiato from the Hemispheres album- 1978. It’s 11 mins long but worth every second. I saw them live in 1990 on the Presto tour and they did YYZ, La Villa, and also Xanadu from the Farewell to Kings album- all in the same show. It was unbelievable. Thanks for your channel and I look forward to seeing your reacts to more Rush!

Rush is my favorite band of all time. YYZ from their live album “Exit Stage Left” was the very first song I was introduced to them by. I was just starting to learn the drums. My cousin who was already drumming turned me on to them. Neil did a drum 3 minute solo on that song which is, in my opinion, his best solo, actually THE best solo ever. I think most drummers would agree. I was hooked. I would love to see you do a reaction on that version of this song. You won’t be disappointed.

You can’t fully grasp how insanely brilliant this song is in just one listen. You need at least four-once for the full picture, then zero in on the guitar, the bass, and the drums. Every pass reveals another layer of pure mastery. This track is overflowing with skill, life, and technical excellence.
