GFR set up a free concert for US troops in Schweinfurt one time. The Army Engineers created an ad hoc stage using two 2 1/2 ton trucks on a field in our Kaserne. I have never heard of any other major act do anything similar "just for the troops". They were our gold star band. respect.
My opinion the greatest 3 man band of all times. The Mark Don Mel album aloane should have them in the Hall of Fame. Mark Farner is and still is the most underrated guitar player of all time. Grew up listening to this and still do Do Meam Mistreater Love your reacation Syde stay safe
Rick Wallace..I completely agree with you. I call the Rock Hall of Fame "The rock hall of fame snobs" once they snubbed GFR and Mark's incredible guitar work. Mark F. still plays concerts and still plays guitar fantastically. I loved his guitar playing very unique and I'm always spellbound listening to his guitar licks! I saw them at the Forum in Los Angeles in early 70's in concert. So great always incredible live like Syde stated.
@@jimearnest4342 I love Mean Mistreater. Have you seen the youtube video where Mark F. plays the piano (and the group) with a symphony orchestra as he sings "Mean Mistreater"? It's great! "I think it was in early 80's or later. "I know all about you, your childhood days, your mom and dad your pretty faccccccceeee".😎.
Grand Funk Railroad sold out Shea Stadium’s 55,000 seats in 72 hours, beating the Beatles Shea Stadium sell out (Friday through Monday). That record stood until 2008 when Shea Stadium was demolished. Tell me again why they aren’t in the RRHoF.
Grand funk was awesome ... simply put. Mark Farner was the best front man in my opinion. He played lead guitar, wrote and sang most of their songs, played keyboards/organ and played harmonica. One of the greatest singers in rock and roll history. You should listen to Creeping the studio version by Grand Funk. I think you would really like it.
Oh DramaSydE, you are totally right about Grand Funk being in the Hall of Fame. Personally, I think the only thing missing from the live version and the studio version is the sound effects of birds when the song slows up. It really gives the feeling of being on the ship. Love your reaction and channel. Thanks for this memory.
Funny you said about passing out. My older sister went to their concert at WSU in 1972 and she passed out after 30 minutes. She was so mad she missed the rest of show.
On VH1 there used to be a Show called "Behind The Music" were they would show the History of a Band, and when they show this Band I loved them even More, these guy went through a lot of Bullshit there Manager Sued them For 57 million dollars when they fired him because they thought they were signed to a record company but their Manager was signed to the company and they were signed to him, when the money came in the manager got half and the other half was divided 3 Ways so they fired him, and the manager won and he took everything just left them with their name so they had to start over And the added a fourth Member to the Band
They dumped Mark Farner the lead singer, guitar player, harmonica player and who wrote most of the songs. Once Mark F. wasn't there many of us felt they were no longer GFR..they say they are but not without their lead guy...no way! Shame on them!
I wish I could let you feel what it's like to intimately know this song, for the last half century, and to see it live at Shea, It's very emotional... The memories of that last half century flashing in and out...Grand Funk was just one of the HUNDREDS of great bands of the era...Everyone was great, every radio station on FM had something great playing, All the greatest bands touring...Here in philly, we saw them all...Hope you're still listening to great music...
You're a Buckeye!!! Yesssss!!! I seen Grank Funk w/ Bloodrock at Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio in April, 1971. The night before I went down to the induction center to go in the Army. What a send off! It was Awesome. "Time Machine was their 1st big hit. Check it out, please. Go Bucks!
My dad threw out his vinyl collection when my brother and I were in college and the military, respectively. I dearly love that man but to throw out original records from GFR, Steely Dan, Jethro Tull, Stones, Bill Withers, The Who... is a tragedy of epic proportions.
I was a junior in High School when "Closer to Home" came out! May I implore you to go back and listen to the entire album . It was a game changer the first time I heard the opening cut "Sin's a Good Mans Brother." The entire album became the soundtrack of my age groups life. There are so many good songs on that album you will be very surprised. Plus -keep on with Steely Dan... you are getting to the really good part and don't forget Donald Fagen's solo inventory awaits as well. LOVE your work my man and thanks for the great entertainment and solid tunes!...jack
The hardest working three piece band ever. They belong in the RR Hall of Fame. It was 69 and psychedelics were passed around at the concerts. Those females were high as they could go.
Finally you got around to this one! Live or studio, don’t matter they were great and this song is a true classic. Don’t get me started on the RRHOF. Thank you Mr. D for experiencing this one for yourself. Great reaction and it was something to see. The crowd, well let’s just say it was 1971 so there was some enhancements available for the spazzification going on, if you know what I mean. 🔥🔥🔥
One of the most underated bands EVER. This concert at Shea Stadium SOLD OUT faster than the Beatles Shea concert. And the Beatles didn't have a full house at there performance!
These guys were very underrated, by me as well growing up. Most of us were aware of their hits, but never went deeper than that to reveal their real talent. They were really ahead of their time too, if you watch some of their old video, the way they dressed!
I know how ya feel man, I'd Love to have been there too ! I was laying in an operating room having Open Heart Surgery for 12 hours. My older bother is why I gre up with this music ! Keep Jam'in brother !!!
On this historic night at the Shea, Humble Pie opened for Grand Funk my hometown band. The Pie got the crowd rockin and GFR got em rollin and the cops were terrified that the stands would collapse. For a cool beatnik song Humble Pie-For Your Love and for an acapella performance by the Pie's Steve Marriott and Alexis Korner (godfather of UK blues) Diamonds in the Rough th-cam.com/video/w0F5SVBty5I/w-d-xo.html Alexis brought many of our Black blues artists to the UK like Muddy Waters. Speaking of Muddy, Steppenwolf did a fantastic cover of Hoochie Coochie Man. Hope you enjoy this rabbit hole.
Nothing on recorded music is even 40% of hearing live. 1960s music hit you with sonic concussions, vibes, it could drive you back. Seen GFR a few times, 3 man bands like Blie Cheer. Your exhausted after a concert with the Rock bands. Just an old Rock & Roll Festival roadie 71 yrs old. LSD & Rock & Roll changed America.
I hope you read this drama Syd I was a total Grand Funk nut so you've got to know this that the producer of their Studio albums was horrible until Frank Zappa came along and produced one of their albums Grand Funk Railroad was known for their RAW live performances which I see you have noticed when you do have time please sit back at home and listen closely to the full live album called caught in the act it is a blow your mind singing in every instrument played please have a listen
The Beatles sold out Shea Stadium in 4 days/That is pretty good. Grand Funk sold out Shea in 4 hours. Mark plays only songs he wrote/ He was really young.
This is one of those songs that I think needs to be fully appreciated with the studio version. It is considered a masterpiece because of the studio innovation. There is a place where something like a violin that backs the major theme change in the middle of the song that just lifts and intrigues me. It is downright umbilical, as though transitioning into death at the hands of a stranger and into reburth on a higher frequency as the narrator breaks through and begins to get "closer to home (the port of his birth), all represented instrumentally with great effect in that section of the recording. In fact Homer Simpson referred to this song as the perfection of the classic rock sound, or something very close. Now let's discuss those lyrics. This song is so great largely because the lyrics are entirely coherent on the surface as a mariners tale, while intended (I believe) as a psychodrama taking place conversationally between the super ego and the rest of a personality that is in crisis. Could the stranger maybe be an hallucinogen like l.s.d.? Did you maybe miss all that, or am I tripping? I know this is backwards from normal, but in this case you are doing a real disservice to yourself by not listening to the studio version. This one is notorious for it's studio work and creates a certain mood that is remarkably crafted sonically. Go studio on this one. ⚓😎🤙😇⛵
I mean man this song is fundamentally not about being a jam or beat or rhythm. It's a piece of fine metaphorical art. But you need to listen to the studio version to hear the fine grain. Otherwise, you aren't really experiencing what is one of my favorite pieces of music in it's most full and proper manner. Seriously dude. Take ten minutes to check me out here. Trust me, this song doesn't really have anything to do with the sea, but it still feels like it does. Back in the day, the good stuff was done on that level. Impressive work, even today.

It took The Beatles 7 weeks to sell out Shea Stadium, It took Grand Funk 3 days.
More Grand Funk greatness. Mel Schacher's bass just driving everything along.
My opinion the greatest 3 man band of all times.
The Mark Don Mel album aloane should have them in the Hall of Fame.
Mark Farner is and still is the most underrated guitar player of all time.
Grew up listening to this and still do
Do Meam Mistreater
Love your reacation Syde stay safe
I've been trying to get somebody to react to "mean mistreater" for ever, seems they only want to react to mainstream stuff.
Rick Wallace..I completely agree with you. I call the Rock Hall of Fame "The rock hall of fame snobs" once they snubbed GFR and Mark's incredible guitar work. I agree!
To be fair, Humble Pie with Steve Marriotte opened the show and the management thought the bleachers would collapse.
This was their signature song and they were made to be appreciated live!
Oh DramaSydE, you are totally right about Grand Funk being in the Hall of Fame. Personally, I think the only thing missing from the live version and the studio version is the sound effects of birds when the song slows up. It really gives the feeling of being on the ship. The stands shaking....’nuff said
A top 500 greatest song ever written in history.
I'm surprised the drummer doesn't break his drum sticks and drum heads when he plays.
Funny you said about passing out. My older sister went to their concert at WSU in 1972 and she passed out after 30 minutes. She was so mad she missed the rest of show.
I love the bass line. This is an oldie but goody. I still remembered every word.

The guitar Mark Farner is playing is in the hall of fame.
This is my estranged wife and I song when we left the rust belt for a better life out west. Memories
All the other big bands were from England... GFR is America's band and we loved them!
I wish I could let you feel what it's like to intimately know this song, for the last half century, and to see it live at Shea, It's very emotional... They have so many great tunes. Shining On is one of mine. Black Licorice, Some kind of Wonderful, Heart Breaker.
The level of energy at a Grand Funk Railroad concert at that time must have been enormous. Born just a year after this event, so too F'n late 😑😄
I was at that concert and it was as much fun as it looked. We almost rocked the stadium off its foundation. It was a great time to be young.
Yes why are they not in the rock nroll hall of fame . It's nice to see younger people enjoying this awesome band
Go Bucks!
I saw them in concert at the Spectrum in Philly in the 70’s.
AMAZING to say the least!
I used to have a live album of theirs that I played the hell out of. I was in high school, and they were the best get down, dance tour ass off band!
Just picked up 33 today
💙✌🎸🎶 Yeah they did ya like that!
Brother, YOU ROCK! Keep playing the funk, Grand Funk!
The people in the audience give me the goosebumps
I saw GFR live in the old Boston Garden....They were my first "LIVE" rock and roll show....I will never forget!
They are amazing and the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame should be ashamed
This was when we had ROCK GODS!
Marks guitar is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum
Pure soul when singing with eyes closed, coming straight from the heart.
Grand Funk!!!! So good, so fun!

Thank you Sir..you are an incredible music aficionado.
The critics hated GFR, but what did they know. Fuck all is the answer
Damn! Forgot how great they were! Thanx
Grand Funk. So good!
It's impossible to hate the player OR the game when they are both just so damn good
Yeah!!!! 👍🇺🇲❤
Brilliant music and great reation.
Yeah love me some Grandfunk
This sure brings back good old memories.. I've still got all their albums and in excellent condition...
The hardest working three piece band ever. They belong in the RR Hall of Fame.

Great.....just GREAT@@!!
Classic rock live !! Nothing better, especially Skynyrd !
Thanks for reacting to this, few have and it is a shame they haven't.
Fabulous performance of an iconic song. I love the lyrics as much as, well, everything else about this.
After this show Shea Stadium had to be inspected for structural damage .. 55000 people going insane will do that
Those was the day when bands sounded like they did on the radio
Mark Farner just turned 72 and his voice still sounds phenomenal. He may have lost just a bit of his upper range but he still sounds great.
Yes. You are.... continue on Sir
These guys were very underrated, by me as well growing up. Most of us were aware of their hits, but never went deeper than that to reveal their real talent. They were really ahead of their time too, if you watch some of their old video, the way they dressed!
That was Shea Stadium i believe.
This is my absolute favorite of their songs.
Saw them open for Johnny Winter back in the day. You might want to check Johnny out.
These guys fucked me up. I was a kid. Saw them live, still with me. Love from England 🇬🇧
I know how ya feel man, I'd Love to have been there too ! I was laying in an operating room having Open Heart Surgery for 12 hours.

How are they not in the fucken Hall of Fame.........?
When great bands break up, it is one of the great and senseless tragedies. Life is short, people.

HOF. Yes! From Ohio. Yes please
Rock & Roll hall of fame is politically driven and not necessarily based on talent. Grand Funk should be in the hall of fame...
Because they’re all stoned out of their minds 🤓
Bro, you have got to check out Inside Looking Out! It’s a must, back. So nasty and dirty!!!
MEL PLAYED WITH ?MARK AND THE MYSTERIANS-96 tears
