These guys have always been hugely underrated. They were a monster band in their day. The fact they’re not in the Rock Hall of Fame is a crime, they deserve it far more than other acts that did make it. Shame on them.

My older brother took me to see Grand Funk on April 29, 1971 at Cobo Hall in Detroit.. a week before I left for Vietnam.. I'll never forget that concert.. my brother died before I got home..

I graduated high school in 1969. I first saw Grand Junk Railroad in concert in Long Beach California in 1970. I really didn't know much about them at the time. I remember thinking how much sound was produced by just three guys. One of the great American rock bands. Underappreciated. If you liked this song, you should listen to some of their others which I think are even better.

For ME, these 3 guys were the definition of "Power Trio" back in the day. This was the best, most energetic, live performance I've ever seen. LOVED the fuzz-tone bass -- just amazing. And these guys produced this sound with just the 3 of them and with instruments limited by the technology of the day.
The song that I remember most from this band is titled, We’re An American Band. Indeed they were. I really like the guitar riffs in the second part of this song. And the lead singer. Wow. It takes a special talent to yell into the microphone and make it sound great. And the drummer. He got a workout.

In this video, Mel on bass was only 18 years old, Don was 19 and Mark 20. What is most incredible is that this sound came from only a 3 man band but 3 guys with immense talent. My favorite band ever and I owned every albulm that they ever put out. By the way, Mark is still performing live shows with his band, still sounds like he is 20 and he is now 70 years old.Mark wrote 90% of the songs, played bass early in his career, of course lead guitar and great vocals, he also plays keyboards on many GFR songs and also plays drums as well...and all at a high skill level. Amazingly talented man...Mel was maybe the best bass guitarist in the world in the early 70's as well and Don is incredible on drums.

GFR and would be known as the originaters of "Stadium Rock". They filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took 3-weeks to sell-out Shea !! I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl. the Promoters sold 15,000 tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 Miami police cars !! If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, and left them NOTHING, they would have been the biggest Band EVER !! Their leader and frontman Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to ever come out of Flint, Michigin (except maybe the GM Buick). There is NO GFR without Mark Farner !! WAKE UP R&R HOF !!

In the early 70’s, they opened for Led Zeppelin and they drew a bigger reaction from the fans than they did. Which at that time was unheard of. And I think Led Zeppelin’s manager kicked them off the tour cause they were outperforming them.

These guys were one of those bands that the critics absolutely savaged every chance they got, but the fans ate em up. They sold out stadium after stadium during their heyday. I think they actually got even better when they added the keyboard player, Craig Frost, in 1973.
I first seen Grand Funk Railroad live in 1974 and then another 6 times over the years. I had a chance to meet them years later. They were down to earth laughing and joking with us the fans. They are one of my all-time favorite bands. Three talented musicians that should be in the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame"
Saw them live that very same year. They tell me I enjoyed the concert. 😋 The again at Atlanta Pop in 1970 and in Biloxi a couple of years ago. Those two concerts were amazing and I was able to remember both!!
The nickel bag is a reference to pot. Notice he mentioned earlier in the song "reefer" which is pot and he said he was going to keep smoking that thing. BTW the "mature" bass player, Mel Schacher, was 19-20 years old. They sold out the old New York Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles. There is a live video of them playing at Shea Stadium and the crowd was so into the music they actually had the stadium moving.

Yes, depending on kind of pot and current market value, a nickel bag (a five dollar bag) was a finger and a half or two fingers of pot in a plastic baggie and a dime bag (a ten dollar bag) was three to four fingers of pot in a plastic baggie. A Finger had to do with the width or thickness not length of a finger. And of course there was no one better to listen to back in the day than the great American band, Grand Funk Railroad. I grew up In Michigan just north of Detroit in the 1960's. The Grand Trunk Railroad ran about half a mile from my house. The guys were great rockers and super funky. We had so much great music coming from our area back then. Loved growing up here and waiting to hear what the next amazing music that would come out.
This was for their audition for a TV Appearance. The light clapping at the end is from the maybe 20 people that were there. Jammin for a small crowd and their own enjoyment. 3 Guys from Flint MI. They should be in the RnR HOF. The RnR HOF will never be complete until they are inducted,
Mel Schacher the bassist in brown played some of the meanest bass ever played in Rock & Roll. The amplifiers were built specifically to produce a fuzzy tone when a switch was thrown. Don Brewer to Drummer is the force that drives the sound. And lead man Mark Farner was the total package. He not only played guitar, harmonica, keyboards and drums on occasion, he was a preeminent front man of that period. They sold our Shea stadium. 55,000 seats in 3 days. It sold out so fast they added a second show on the next night. I took the Beatles 7 weeks to sell out the same stadium a few years before.
I saw the original Grand Funk at Tampa Stadium in 1974 with Wet Willie. Mark Farner is pretty good guitar player. Saw them at the Mid Florida amphitheater in Tampa with Kid Rock but didn’t have Mark. They were definitely not the same without him. Had to add: Mom: Do you know what a nickel bag is? Daughter: A bag to store your nickels?😂 Mom: No..it was pot. $5 for 1/4 oz a nickel bag. $10 for 1/2 oz a dog dime bag. Allegedly…😂
They are one of the greatest "power trios" (as we called them i.e. Jimi Hendrix experience, Cream etc.). The album this came from was a staple at most house parties in the 70s. So cool to see you both digging new music and genres.

Nickel bag was a $5 (lid) of pot. Usually sold in a sandwich bag. At Atlanta Pop in July 1970 there was a guy sitting on a police car trunk selling nickel bags out of an old feed sack as the car cruised through the crowd of 400,000. You just don't see that very often.
Thanks for doing this song. I have been looking forward to you two reaction to it, and I was away from home and all phone all day. I attended rock concerts from the 60's through the 80's and Grand Funk Railroad was one of the very best live bands. In my personal opinion Grand Funk Railroad was much better early as a three piece power band than later when they added their fourth member and changed the style of their music.
I saw them in '73 and '75 and they still tour. I'm seeing them next month. This is my all time favorite GFR song. Back then a nickel was $5 worth of pot which came out to about a 1/4 oz cause it ran about $20 per ounce... yep I'm was a hippie back in the day and still am, just don't smoke weed any more. Mom, I can't believe that you don't know this. GFR had many radio hits, but these longer rocking songs like this, Heartbreaker, etc. were my favorites. Glad Ya'll did this. Nickle bags were weed in baggies sold for $5. I think these words (nickle bags) were added later. I think there was another word in the song earlier.

Great reaction to GFR!!! I saw them in 1973, 1974, and on their reunion tour in the 90s!! The first time I saw them they had already added a keyboard player, Craig Frost. You might remember their big hit, " We're An American Band"!! Again, great reaction!

These guys were one of those bands that the critics absolutely savaged every chance they got, but the fans ate em up. They sold out stadium after stadium during their heyday. I think they actually got even better when they added the keyboard player, Craig Frost, in 1973.

I first seen Grand Funk Railroad live in 1974 and then another 6 times over the years. I had a chance to meet them years later. They were down to earth laughing and joking with us the fans. They are one of my all-time favorite bands. Three talented musicians that should be in the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame"

Saw them live that very same year. They tell me I enjoyed the concert. 😋 The again at Atlanta Pop in 1970 and in Biloxi a couple of years ago. Those two concerts were amazing and I was able to remember both!!

The nickel bag is a reference to pot. Notice he mentioned earlier in the song "reefer" which is pot and he said he was going to keep smoking that thing. BTW the "mature" bass player, Mel Schacher, was 19-20 years old. They sold out the old New York Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles. There is a live video of them playing at Shea Stadium and the crowd was so into the music they actually had the stadium moving.

Yes, depending on kind of pot and current market value, a nickel bag (a five dollar bag) was a finger and a half or two fingers of pot in a plastic baggie and a dime bag (a ten dollar bag) was three to four fingers of pot in a plastic baggie. A Finger had to do with the width or thickness not length of a finger. And of course there was no one better to listen to back in the day than the great American band, Grand Funk Railroad. Especially if you happen to have a bag full of nickels!!! Great job ladies. You're doing wonderful reactions.

Great band out of my hometown of Flint, Mi. Named after Grand Trunk Railroad. A railroad that runs thru Flint.
I grew up In Michigan just north of Detroit in the 1960's. The Grand Trunk Railroad ran about half a mile from my house. The guys were great rockers and super funky. We had so much great music coming from our area back then. Loved growing up here and waiting to hear what the next amazing music that would come out.
This was for their audition for a TV Appearance. The light clapping at the end is from the maybe 20 people that were there. Jammin for a small crowd and their own enjoyment. 3 Guys from Flint MI. They should be in the RnR HOF. The RnR HOF will never be complete until they are inducted,
Mel Schacher the bassist in brown played some of the meanest bass ever played in Rock & Roll. The amplifiers were built specifically to produce a fuzzy tone when a switch was thrown. Don Brewer to Drummer is the force that drives the sound. And lead man Mark Farner was the total package. He not only played guitar, harmonica, keyboards and drums on occasion, he was a preeminent front man of that period. They sold our Shea stadium. 55,000 seats in 3 days. It sold out so fast they added a second show on the next night. I took the Beatles 7 weeks to sell out the same stadium a few years before.
This is one of those bands that is hard to categorize. Rock? Funk? Blues? Psychedelic? Yeah, to all. They were just GOOD.

I saw the original Grand Funk at Tampa Stadium in 1974 with Wet Willie. Mark Farner is pretty good guitar player. Saw them at the Mid Florida amphitheater in Tampa with Kid Rock but didn’t have Mark. They were definitely not the same without him.

They are one of the greatest "power trios" (as we called them i.e. Jimi Hendrix experience, Cream etc.). The album this came from was a staple at most house parties in the 70s. So cool to see you both digging new music and genres.

They are so young here. This is early GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, before they put out their radio hits as GRAND FUNK. I like this music much more.
This song was released on December 29, 1969. Old fave of mine. I prefer the studio version but this was cool. I learned to play it when I was a teenager. Thanks for reacting to it. \m/
Nickel bag was a $5 (lid) of pot. Usually sold in a sandwich bag. At Atlanta Pop in July 1970 there was a guy sitting on a police car trunk selling nickel bags out of an old feed sack as the car cruised through the crowd of 400,000. You just don't see that very often.

Thanks for doing this song. I have been looking forward to you two reaction to it, and I was away from home and all phone all day. I attended rock concerts from the 60's through the 80's and Grand Funk Railroad was one of the very best live bands. In my personal opinion Grand Funk Railroad was much better early as a three piece power band than later when they added their fourth member and changed the style of their music.

I saw them in '73 and '75 and they still tour. I'm seeing them next month. This is my all time favorite GFR song. Back then a nickel was $5 worth of pot which came out to about a 1/4 oz cause it ran about $20 per ounce... yep I'm was a hippie back in the day and still am, just don't smoke weed any more. Great reaction ladies!
Grand funk was and still is one of my favorites.Its hard to go wrong with choosing which one of their songs to try.strongly recommend The song "Nothing is the same"off of the closer to home album.In fact, everything on that album is fire 🔥

This was actually a cover. The Animals did this song in 1966! The Animals were my favorite of the British Bands.
In 1971 GFR sold out shea stadium in NYC, 55,000 tickets in 72 hours. They beat the Beatles previous record.

One of the best three man bands next to RUSH - You should also listen to them after they added Craig Frost, keyboards, in 1972 - After GFR broke up, lead singer/guitarist Mark Farner went into Christian music ~ Craig Frost joined Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band in 1980 ~ Don Brewer, one of the best singing drummers out there, started touring with Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band in 1983.
