My family has visited twice and absolutely love Vancouver. We have plans to move there in a few years. Thank you for this review. One of the main reasons why we want to move is for safety reasons associated with racism. True, racism is everywhere. But, there are different levels in my experience. My son is on the autism spectrum and I don't want to worry about him being perceived as threatening and getting shot from a paranoid person or police. In Atlanta, there's a large population of confederate flag waving people and I've experienced Neo Nazis and negative police interactions. I'm trying to reduce that exposure for my 9 yr old son. Can you elaborate more on the level of racism you faced in Vancouver?

Are there any less expensive suburbs or small towns in the Vancouver area? I work remotely so at least on the face of it, I can work anywhere and I'm worried about the political situation in the States. I don't want to be here if a conflict breaks out because I'm pretty sure African Americans like myself will be targeted. I'm thinking of getting out before that happens. I spent a week in Toronto with my family in 2014 and LOVED the atmosphere - so much less anger than in the States.

Yes, there are "cheaper" areas but with real estate these days, everything is expensive. They have Richmond which is a short drive or train ride from Vancouver and is more affordable than Vancouver. There is also Surrey, and it is more affordable as well.

Downtown Vancouver or Toronto are expensive. They are big north american cities.
Vancouver has outlying areas, North Van, Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, Coquitlam. or 60km out you have Abbots Ford, or Squamish.

I can easily answer this….I lived in Vancouver for 10 years…if you want to see a bunch of Asians and be discriminated by every race even black ones then no…..Even the blacks there don’t like other blacks unless you’re part of the alphabet gang or wanna be white……I lived downtown on Granville street across from the Pacific Center so I know what I am talking about….it’s a beautiful place to live but the people there are all automatons(robots)….Everybody is racist against black….That’s the whole reason I moved back…I didn’t give a shit about the high ass rent….it was more about feeling comfortable about being black

Toronto or the Greater Toronto Area would be the best place in Canada for a black family. It's expensive, and the winters suck.. but there's a huge black population and very little racism. I've been there for 15 years and was called an N word once, by an Indian guy! STAY AWAY from Kingston Ontario.
