Hello all. When hiking solo there at Savage Gulf, always let someone know your Itinerary! It’s rough country.

Could not agree more!! This is not a walk in the park type of area. This is Big Boy/Big Girl stuff. The terrain, the water, the distances to get out of sticky situations are not something to mess around with. I texted my Mom the entire route I was doing this day. It's also important to leave your expected time of completion. For instance, if you do not text or call the person who knows your itinerary by a certain time, something has gone wrong. It does not have to be "at dark." Because you may be doing some night hiking or need some extra time to finish. So leave a time that is a little beyond what you think but not unreasonable. For instance, I was confident I would be done by 4:00 p.m. for this hike but told my Mom 7:00 p.m. for a good chunk of wiggle room (examples that might come up for you: taking longer breaks, not getting cell service until you drive 30 minutes out of the area heading home, etc). Tell the person to call emergency services if they have not heard from you. Thank you for bringing this some attention!

Jamie, I file a similar flight plan to yours for every day day hike. I research my hikes so I have a good feel for the time and distance. I tell my wife that if she hasn't heard from me by sundown, it's time to hit the red button (figuratively speaking, of course) and call the authorities. I go one step farther and give her the name and phone number of the closest ranger station, the local sheriff's office, and if there is one nearby, the name and number of any rescue groups.

@@preacher1511 So smart! Likely will never need to implement, but one sign of maturity -- regardless of age -- is planting a plan for the future. I'm very detailed like you and actually have an entire Google doc dedicated to each big trip I take. Then, I share that link with 1 or 2 people. That way, they have a solid idea of where I could/should be and the authorities to call.

Jamie, this is absolutely my favorite hike in the Savage Gulf. Did it for the first time about 5 years ago and it almost killed me because I was not in shape. Worked at that for a year, did it again, it was much easier, and have done it several more times since. Only once have I seen the water even close to this high at the Ranger Falls crossing, and even then, it was showing some rock tops so we were able to cross. You made a wise choice. But do go back when there has been less rainfall. Ranger Falls is much better than the other falls along Big Creek. It is really stunning. And I have never seen so much water in those streams along the rim trail. They are usually dry or barely flowing. You had a great water day!

This hike sure is a special one. Can't wait to get back here and do a lot more miles via backpacking trip. And yes, I will definitely be hitting up Ranger Falls again. That stream crossing was wild. I really like when there is so much water though. It makes me happy to see. But maybe that's because I lived out west for 5 years in a much drier climate so seeing water flow anywhere makes me cry ... tears of joy, of course. Haha! Happy you enjoyed the video as always!!

Well Jamie, you motivated me so this past Saturday, a friend and I did this trail. His first time, for me probably #5. I just love this trail. I experienced the same thing you did. Got to the crossing at Ranger Falls and it looked just like your video. We searched in vain for a few minutes to try to find a place to cross but it just didn't seem safe. I can only imagine what Ranger Falls looked like. All of those "creek crossings" up on the Plateau, which are usually dry, were really flowing. Thanks for the motivation. It was an awesome day. God bless.

What a gorgeous hike. Glad you didn’t try to cross over the one creek. Maybe next time

Thank you, Melody! One of my favorite day hikes of the year so far. Plan on getting back there soon for an overnight backpacking trip. The creek was definitely too risky to cross. 😅 Happy you enjoyed the video!!

I just started the planning process of my trip from WI to TN this April and stumbled upon your channel, how perfect! I'm going to spend a week exploring and hiking, camping out of my car, if you wanna drop any suggestions I'll happy look into them. Either way, thanks for creating the content!

Chadwick!! Love when my channel can help someone out!! Wisconsin to Tennessee trip sounds fun!
So if you’re going to be camping out of your car and not backpacking with a tent/shelter, I think the South Cumberland area is the recommendation I would have. Several day hikes with a lot of interesting terrain and water sources (creeks, waterfalls, rivers, etc.). You could do a section of the Fiery Gizzard Trail and go up to Raven’s Point in a day and back to your car. Then you can pop over to the north where this video was shot and hit up Laurel Falls, Greeter Falls, Ranger Falls, Suton Falls, etc. There are a lot of access trails that lead to connectors and loop back if you want to do a big mileage day like this video.
There’s also a lot of awesome adventures just a short drive from this area. Check out Machine Falls on my channel; also Old Stone Fort State Archeological Park. Both are close by and are fantastic!
Others to check out in way different parts of the state: Great Smoky Mountains, Jamestown (ton of interesting hikes, checkout Northup Falls on my channel 😉).
Hope this helps! And hope you enjoy your trip!!

@@JamieMcCracken DUDE, this is awesome! Thank you for all of that great info, that's almost enough for me to build my whole week around! Hiking is top of the to-do list while I'm down there, and some of these trails looks amazing. I outfitted my CRV into a mini RV and will be camping out of that, it's a blast! There's not often a lot of people out camping at the end of April, but I'm usually looking to find a site that's fairly private and (hopefully) on or close to water. I've also been to Tims Ford but only for a day kayaking trip, looks like there might be some decent hiking and camping there as well. I'm pretty mobile and usually like to check out a few different camping options, let me know if there's any camp grounds or sites in particular that you might recommend. Thanks Jamie!
