    Good tyres, decent brakes, and decent suspension should help a lot. These are especially important on small tracks such as the one in the video, where power and aero matters less

      You need to shorter the transmission! To get more power you cannot go that fast on this track! And trow away all the interior ( if we can, its free, and we can get some money back!)

    As a Subaru owner, it's easier to take the engine out to replace the clutch, rather than taking the gearbox out.
    - If you want good power, find the VF48 turbo from STI and slap some STI intercooler with STI injectors, should give you around 350bhp.
    -Coilovers and anti roll bars, with antilift kit for bigger caster in the front, to reduce the understeer.
    -Subaru forester gearbox with the 4:44 final drive, it will help a lot on this short track.
    -Good lightweight wheels with some nice rubber.
    -Gut the interior and put some nice supportive seat, the one in the Subaru has no support
    In my opinion, WRX can come pretty close to the Lambo

      My thoughts exactly. I have a 2002 WRX with the 4.44 gears, definitely going to swap to the STI turbo and injector setup and going to go front mount. Also, did you need to hammer a screwdriver in to split the block and trans like they did here becuase I did when I did mine 😂 it was at 320,000 km tho and Ontario weather, even tho it hasn’t been wintered in forever and the body and frame are really good still, the block and bell housing were basically welded together lol

  • @pablomahe1284
    @pablomahe1284 2 ปีที่แล้ว +158

    I wonder how much aero can affect the subaru.
    since the track is short, drag isn't as important as donwforce. So stick some canards/diveplanes (they can be cheap if homemade) to the front and rear, that will help in fast corners

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Not in any appreciable way. The track is short so you're not going fast enough to get any real airflow over the surfaces so you won't make any useful downforce without resorting to kitchen table sized wings. If you look at high end time attack cars they use massively oversized wings and spoilers to generate usable downforce at relatively low speed, this said they also have massively powerful engines to facilitate pushing these huge wings through the air. The point of downforce is to push the tyres into the road surface in order to increase the contact patch area and therefore increase traction, a far simpler method of achieving the same result is to just to let some air out of the tyres. In simple terms, contact patch = vertical load/tyre pressure, so to increase contact patch you can increase vertical load through weight or aerodynamic downforce or lower the tyre pressure.

    • @pablomahe1284
      @pablomahe1284 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DjDolHaus86 you're right, but in my experience, even a marginal amount of downforce can make a difference if the car is light enough

      @@DjDolHaus86 bruh, cringe

    • @alondjeckto
      @alondjeckto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@DjDolHaus86 Point of downforce is not to "increase contact patch" (Where did you even heard that). Point of downforce is increasing weight of the (not the mass), more weight = more friction = more grip. Also orginal comment is right, because on such short track maximum achievable speed is not as important as the exit speed from the turn, which will obviously become more if the Bubaru has downforce. More speed out of the turn = more speed on short straights. But I dont think canards, or something as small would make a big difference, I think the need some basic, big aero. Like a wang, splitter, flatfloor with diffuser (its sad that they dont have space for front diffuser).

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@pablomahe1284 Even if they gut the car it's still going to be in the 1300kg range. A well designed wing might add 60kg of downforce at 100mph but they've got a wagon/estate and 100mph is around a corner is ambitious at best. Canards obviously have a far smaller surface area than a wing so will produce far less downforce, they are also close to the body rather than out in the clean air so they are less efficient. Generally canards are more of a tool for enhancing other downforce generating devices by altering the airflow, if you've got an effective front splitter generating low pressure you can use canards to keep separation from higher pressure air.
      Overall I'd say that if they've got some large diameter plastic drain pipe laying around and they can fashion a couple of canards out of for free then no harm in trying but if they've got to spend £100 on materials or significantly more on premade items then that money could be better spent elsewhere.

    Tyres, suspension, brakes and some weight saving will shave a good 4-5seconds off I'd think. Plus, although you wanted a fair comparison with the driver, as Scott drives the car more he will naturally find more time.
    However you've kind of shot yourself in the foot by using Curborough. Being such a short and technical track power won't count for much. Another second maybe 2 on top of the 5 with the handling mods.
    So I'll say now you'll get down to a 1:19 at best and then really struggle to find the last 3 seconds.
    Good luck, I'll be keeping an eye on this.

    • @wannabefunnyman
      @wannabefunnyman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think their best chance at getting it to out match the supercar is to match or exceed it’s power to weight ratio. There’s only so far you can push the power on the stock boxer without some very expensive engine work. Weight reduction will make the most of whatever power adder they choose. Plus, if you do enough weight reduction, you can add some back in opportune spots to help your handling.

    This is a great series, but I can't help but think there were better cars out there that cause less of a headache in terms of carrying out modifications. Off the top of my head, my go to would be a MK4 Golf GTI or Polo GTI (anything with a 1.8 20VT engine basically) Why? They're extremely cheap, they're lightweight, they're tried and tested because the VW community is massive. Parts are interchangeable with a lot of other platforms to create worthy upgrades. There's an abundance of Aftermarket support with many write ups on how to do it. Also the early model engines come with a forged crankshaft & forged pistons.
    Car - £1000
    TT Front Suspension upgrade - £200
    VR6 Brake Upgrade - £300
    Forged rods - £300
    Coilovers - £800
    Uprated clutch - £1000
    550cc Injectors - £300
    Intercooler - £300
    GT25-550 Turbo setup - £2,100
    ECU Upgrade - £1,000
    Sway bar upgrade - £200
    Wheels and Tyres - £1000
    £7,600 (plus other silly little bits like couplings, clamps, bolts, lines and adaptors) You have a 400hp car that slays tracks and still have £5k left for other things like meth injection or a Quaife LSD to help put the power down.

      Here in Australia Subarus are regarded by most as easier and cheaper than VWs to work on and modify, plus there are so many of them that parts and aftermarket are easy , this is probably the case in many places outside Europe.

    • @shona5512
      @shona5512 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@farnarkleboy It probably makes sense considering that you're closer to Japan and you guys have a lot of Japanese cars in general over there, so it would be seen as the usual thing to work on. Whereas in Europe, 70% of the cars on the road is either VAG, BMW or Mercedes.
      I've watched someone who's owned Japanese cars their whole life replace a radiator on a VW Golf and get so annoyed by having to remove other parts just to get at it.. Whereas I'd think nothing of removing the front end and core support off a car to get at the radiator, because I'm used to it and can do it pretty quickly.
      All I meant when I said "easier to work on" was the fact that around the engine bay of a boxer engine is not convenient at all for basic things like spark plug changes or even gearbox removal in comparison to a 1.8T engine.

    Should be doable - try and find used performance parts, port stock turbo, gut it. Tires, reducing turbo lag and power to weight are the key on such a small track.

    It's so much easier imo to take the entire engine out on EJ motors to do clutches. But then again I've never had a lift when doing them and I've done many of them. You can get these motors out in like literally 30 minutes with two people.

    Everything depends on the tires. If they use the same compound on both cars it will be very difficult but if they cheese it and put what are essentially track tires on the subaru, then it has a very real chance.

    With all due respect this ain't how you do it if you want to have the cheapest fast track car possible.
    Best option is the following:
    Buy a cheap audi TT 225 with a bam engine. You can get these under a grand. Then remap the 1.8T to about 300bhp (or buy one already remapped). Spend a couple grand on suspension mods (bracing, coilovers, roll bars). Strip out the interior for free. Remove some of the heavier non-aero panels. Get a haldex controller to bias the awd to the rear. Add some downforce. Then finally stick on some real rubber like nankang ar-1s.
    Car (£1000)
    Remap (£500)
    Suspension (£2000)
    Haldex controller (£2000)
    Tyres (£800)
    Weight reductions (free or potentially even some profit if you sell the seats and panels)
    Hell there's even money left over for a bigger turbo. You could probably get the 1.8T pumping out near 400bhp within the budget.
    But hey, I guess it would be less entertaining to watch someone make reasonable decisions to actually try to win this challenge. Much funnier to see a couple guys buy a broken estate and stick ricer rims on it and wonder why their times aren't improving.

    I think, based on the highly skilled hammering I saw today, that you can get the Subaru down to about 1:32.0 or so.... 🤣 Yes, I fear you may do more harm than good, but please, continue on, afterall, it's all about the entertainment value.

    Coilover, bigger breaks with more pistons (if possible), lighter rims and better tyres for grip, upgrade power and if spare money left maybe some aero. In that order would be my investments to make the car faster

    Bit of a terrain question, isn't it. Not talking about dirt roads and rally driving, but on narrow tarmac with enough bumps narrow corners without any real straights in between corners, every 30 years old hot hatch (and probably even the 75HP budget versions) is able to beat any modern super car. As long as the right person is driving, of course.
