In california we call the nankang an "entry level all season tire." Last time I checked the rival 1.5s was the fastest on the market but that was before the new re-71rs was widely available.
Yokohama Advan A052, Falken RT660 and Nankang CR-1 are the best-in-slot 200TW tires now, also faster than the AR-1 in this type of setting because their optimal temperature is super low and they work right away from a standing start :)
Calling AR1's an entry level all season tyre is a bit of a stretch. Potentially you're thinking of the NS2r? Regardless they're still a decent cheap performer. Maybe not on the same level as AO52s etc for autocross though
I get as giddy when this pops up in my notifications as when I saw Top Gear was up next on cable TV as a kid. Love the way you integrate the sponsorships; really organic. I'm rooting so hard for the Subie and for your channel!!!
Brakes and tyres similar to the slicks used in this episode gave us our biggest difference in racing. Then weight. Power, bushes, suspension, etc, were very minor
I would have loved to see the sport tires with lower pressures than recommended, that is likely how they would be ran at the track anyway due to the extra heat, when compared to street driving, causing higher peak pressures.
You guys are introducing a HUGE, unnecessary variable with that standing start. This test should be a flying start. Not meant to be critical, loving this series.
When I put grippy tyres on my old AMG it felt so much better round corners and under braking I wore them out in about three months just commuting to work and back but it cut my journey time quite substantially, down graded slightly after that because I have terrible impulse control. :D
Great series however I have some suggestions. Is there a way you can use a more accurate method of timing the laps. Pressing start and stop on your phone is bound to cause incosistencies due to human error and reaction speed. Another is that it is proabably best to do a run of 3 or so laps and take the average as the result you go by.
New tires have a mould release compound on the treads. They should have given each set atleast 10 fastlaps to get the tire surface to optimal grip level
I think one of the big advantage of the supercar is the surface contact between the tyres and the road, because they're super wide. There is a reason wide body kits exists and it's not for cosmetics. It's always impressive to see the difference between LeMans GT Porsches and stock Porsches. You should have gone for wider wheels when you bought better tyres !
Ahahah Appletank8 it would need the inner part of the wheel to start outside the body ! But I think the definition of open wheel car is up to subject, as some people argue it should be single seater, or on the contrary some argue a KTM X-Bow is open wheel while it's still contained in the body. And Pog Tuber, the whole point of my com was to get wider rims and wider tyres, and yes I expect it'd have made a lot of difference especially when they're happy with 3s gain with these thin wheels
That's a common misconception right here. Tire size is pretty much only for heat management, the contact patch doesn't change all that much after a certain point.
Aafaik the extra width is to spread the force+heat over more area, allowing the tyres to survive (a bit longer) the abuse of a powerful engine and hard braking. In a single lap a wider wheel might well suffer from being too hard to keep at ideal temps.
years ago I was skint, went for infinitys as cheap. First corner in the wet the lack of grip scared me so much I went back to the garage and maxed my credit card on some mid range kuhmos
If you are trying to compare times down to a tenths and especially hundredths of a second, get a bluetooth 10Hz GPS receiver and an app for the phone to measure lap times. All together is not more than 100 - 120 £.

Cool video and very interesting finding. However, with the freshly fresh tires it’s not gonna be the REAL performance these tires can go to. A retest after the running in on the UHPs and AR1s would be great. The AR1 especially gets SOOO much better after a like 200mi. A bit of scrubbing won’t do enough, IMHO
£8k is a lot of coin to play with. Id stiffen the chassis with strut braces, bushes etc, big brake upgrade and dump all the interior- which won't cost anything. Those should get you closer! Im really enjoying this series. Great job by all the crew involved.
When I used to auto X I was shocked at the difference tires would make. The proper set could make a difference of upto 4 seconds per run. (Avg run being about 80 seconds) it was so different that you'd had to drive the car in a completely different way. It was awesome. Best mod for any car.
Sway bars and strut braces next! No idea what the Subaru aftermarket prices are like or how stiff the chassis is from factory, but for my Volvo you'll have front and rear for €500. Before I installed sway bars I wasn't sure how much difference a thicker squiggly line under my car would make. It makes quite the difference! It doesn't mount the curbs as easily anymore, although that downside is overshadowed by the amount of grip you gain. Adding a strut brace allows you to get the most out of it. My Volvo was pretty flexible from factory, so again, no idea what it does for a Subaru.
I was expecting that 5sp to split in two for the launches but it held, these WRX GG models need the KIEN gearbox support to hold launches.. it's also another good mod for peace of mind.
The Bridgestone Potenza Sport are Great fast tyres - yes. BUT: they really wear a lot once driven hard (on track), so that’s where the AR1 shines: You can drive the AR1 really fast for a 20-30min stint, the Potenza Sport will get soft after 5-10 minutes and wears a lot
All these small improvements to handling are really going to help when they try to squeeze more power out of the car, I have no doubt they'll be able to beat the lambo
Really hope you guys do what it takes to make the subie faster no matter if it's over budget. It's no fun when these challenges fail and we don't get to see what it actually takes keep up with the supercar/racecar
Tires are going to be my next upgrade. My first autocross event in my Fiesta St I competed against 30 other drivers in Novice class, and finished 5th losing to a track prepped 99 Corvette, a Lotus Exige (they were by 3 seconds faster) and two Miata's on track tires that were .2 seconds faster than I was. Meanwhile I was on 60 dollar generic Milestar all seasons.
Well I'm struggling to see where another 6 seconds is in that unless you get real busy with the weight loss. Power might get you something like a couple of seconds if you're lucky but really I think rubber is probably the most effective mod on that track. Maybe chipping at it will add up but I think you're into smaller gains from here.
The thing eith track tyres isn't just extra grip, but grip for longer. Road tyres give up pretty quick, over consecutive laps where the track tyres will be consistent for much longer.
Great vid for the most underrated speed upgrade, currently stuck waiting for anything but all-season tires to be back in stock for my stock Miata wheels. Just waiting for this channel to be renamed Brodie Media at this point.
2 years ago, I cut my rear tires on bad pavement. I drove a while before I realized something was off. My Maserati has 21 inch wheels and expensive tires. Michelin Pilot Sport 285/30 ZR 21 were over $600 x 2 USD. Messed up a rim, repair $250, oh yeah, tow on flatbed to tire shop $150. Total was too much, but had to be done. Enough rubber on front and rear to keep car from sliding in hard corners. Only way I can 'burn rubber' accelerating is if pavement is wet. Tires, wheels, shocks, brakes, suspension all upgraded to very high performance levels. It will scare me before it reaches it's limit. Would love to take it to track and actually open it up.
I had AR1s on my 350Z and 330ci and will never buy those tyres again they ware so on and off a grip and you never knew what they going to do, now I'm running Federal 595 RS-Pro and it's such a difference from that over rated crap
You have to pre-heat semi-slicks as they have no grip when cold. With your 1-min lap you should do at least 2 heat laps and only then go for the fast lap. Also pressure needs to be around 3 bar when you finish the fast lap.
You guys should of used the Nankang NS2 R tyres… they are like the AR1’s but more suited to the road, a 50/50 between the Bridgestones and the AR1’s. They are also significantly cheaper than AR1’s with fewer drawbacks

Very cool series, entertaining and informational. Perfect mix! More like this please.
Have been waiting for this video for a while. Great content!
I subbed to you guys because of this series, it's lots of fun.
This video series is so cool! Thanks for the effort!
I was crying for that WRX transmission with those launches on the Nankangs
The Bridgestone Potenza Sport are Great fast tyres - yes.
BUT: they really wear a lot once driven hard (on track), so that’s where the AR1 shines:
You can drive the AR1 really fast for a 20-30min stint, the Potenza Sport will get soft after 5-10 minutes and wears a lot
All these small improvements to handling are really going to help when they try to squeeze more power out of the car, I have no doubt they'll be able to beat the lambo
I love your videos, great mix of education and humor!
Keep up the awesome content!
Decent time can be gained with weight loss and chassis bracing.
Cant wait to see next episode, love your channel!
Really hope you guys do what it takes to make the subie faster no matter if it's over budget. It's no fun when these challenges fail and we don't get to see what it actually takes keep up with the supercar/racecar
Love it. I'm interesting to see how you further close the gap after you've upgraded the brakes
I am amazed that the stock 5 speed did not explode with all those launches
Tires are going to be my next upgrade. My first autocross event in my Fiesta St I competed against 30 other drivers in Novice class, and finished 5th losing to a track prepped 99 Corvette, a Lotus Exige (they were by 3 seconds faster) and two Miata's on track tires that were .2 seconds faster than I was.
Meanwhile I was on 60 dollar generic Milestar all seasons.
You guys are putting out some seriously good videos. Glad to meet you if you come to Italy! ✌🏻
Love this! Can’t wait for the episode with a turbo conversion
Where’s the next episode?? This is too good of a series, you guys should make it weekly
Pull out all the excess weight from the car like trim, carpets, spare wheel, unneeded seats etc. 👍
I would love to see this comparison for a wet surface.
Looks like brakes should be next, looking forward to see the next episode!
“I just tasted the track, it… It tastes fast😁”
-Scott
scott looks like gav from slowmo guys and captian sparkles together and im here for it.
keep the series going man!
How cool is that mobile tyre service? Damn cool.
I really want to see scott race this car on a track day against real super cars if its fast enough.
How soon can we get a video on finding grip based off how the track tastes?
I love that driver always lick the ground to test what track is today good or bad 🤣 1:08
People carry on about power and torque, its amazing how much difference good tyres and brakes make
I had AR1s on my 350Z and 330ci and will never buy those tyres again they ware so on and off a grip and you never knew what they going to do, now I'm running Federal 595 RS-Pro and it's such a difference from that over rated crap
You have to pre-heat semi-slicks as they have no grip when cold. With your 1-min lap you should do at least 2 heat laps and only then go for the fast lap. Also pressure needs to be around 3 bar when you finish the fast lap.
Damn this little series is scratching an itch that I've had since the clarkson punched a producer 😅
Keep up the great work team!
Loving this series, it’s amazing
You guys should of used the Nankang NS2 R tyres… they are like the AR1’s but more suited to the road, a 50/50 between the Bridgestones and the AR1’s. They are also significantly cheaper than AR1’s with fewer drawbacks
bro is complaining about 27 degrees while im literally having 40 degrees and im runnin around
With those sparks, i can definitely see a break upgrade coming next.
