I replaced the set on my Murano. I ordered mine through Amazon and received “knock offs” that wouldn’t hold the tailgate up. Beware off that possibility.

Great! Thank you. My 2104 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has had these replaced just a couple of years ago. The originals lasted six years, the replacements only two. The hatch has been more difficult to open and not staying up unless I push it far up. Yesterday it shut on me and I was dreading having to take it to the shop so soon again! So it is great to see how easily I can do this myself.
You can use a small set of vise grips to clamp down on one of your struts and that will hold it up. Instead of holding it up with your head. lol I have done it both ways.
If the old pair is shot so badly it won't hold up the door clamp a pair of vice grips on one of the rods below the cylinder. That will hold up the lift gate while you install the first new strut.. Don't use vice grips on your new lift struts though to install the second strut.
I accidentally pulled my rentaining clips on the new set , thinking i needed to have them undone for installation. I put them back on , i just hope they will hold now ?

If you want to try though, take out one of the existing struts and carefully measure all it's dimensions. You'll need to make sure that any strut you get as a replacement is capable of a) holding the same load and b) compressing short enough to fit with the hatch closed. Good luck!
I am in Arizona and my 2004 ford explorer struts will not come off. Wondering if I need some kind of silicone spray to get them to pop off? I took the clips off and these struts are absolutely stuck on. Dang AZ heat!
Works for some. Not all. 2:01 Toyota Sequoia. When liftgate pushed full up, there is still substantial pressure and push from the pressure in the strut. Very difficult to compress the strut to have neutral pressure on the ball. I was unsuccessful working without additional brute strength.
Hi Nik - yes, of course the parts / method will vary a little bit based on vehicle type and size. I used to own a Sequoia, and the struts on that thing are a lot more substantial than on something smaller like I showed in this video. I'm glad you were able to get yours swapped out. My only guess is that you either don't have the correct struts for your vehicle, or the ones you installed are faulty. I'd double check part numbers to make sure you have the correct struts for your vehicle. Good luck!
On most cars, there will be some mechanism you can use to open the lift gate from the inside. Usually you'll have to remove some piece of trim or access panel, then reach inside with a screwdriver or pair of pliers to push or pull something to release the hatch lock mechanism. Consult your car's owner's manual, or google for your specific make and model with "open hatch from inside" or similar. Good luck!
I have to install struts that are 2 inches longer than the ones on the Excursion, because it only lifts up half way..... how in the hell do you compress that strut to get it on?
Liftgate struts like these *should* be compressible by hand... they'll be stiff and difficult to compress for sure... but if you install one end first, you should be able to compress it down to fit. You may need someone to help hold up the liftgate while you compress the strut. Good luck!
Hey MYOB - they use the same exact style of strut, so the procedure is the same. You'll just have to figure out the right strut. I'd recommend removing the existing strut and taking it into your local auto parts store to see what they have in stock that will fit. You'll need something that extends / compresses to the same lengths, and is capable of holding up the weight of the box correctly. Good luck!
this works in theory. regrettably, I do not live in theory I am 6'0, 270. Lurch, Sasquatch, Wookie, Chewbacca, gorilla, we don't want no trouble with you, mister. The lift struts for the hatch, and the lift struts for the window, are 1" longer than the space between the studs. the lift struts for the glass required a place on concrete, Mighty Thor lean on strut. pump it a couple times, then attach the car end, two handed pull on the thick end. shorten it two inches. snap it on the ball as it extends. change both struts during a commercial break. the hatch struts - not a millimeter of movement. give it the roundboy romp - no movement. I may have tro build a jig to let me compress it a few times
I recently did this on my son's Hyundai Sonata and my Jeep Commander. Now you better step back when opening the hatch on the Commander so it doesn't get you on the way up.
It makes zero sense how those Honda struts can work attached up near hinge. Almost all vehicles have strut attached half way up the gate. Im working with a 2010 Pilot that has left motorized broke, and it takes at least 25 pounds force to push up with hands.Im wonder if right pressure strut has much pressure. Pushing up near hinge takes huge amount of force. 100 pounds force pushing up near hinge would do NOTHING. I cant edit or delete cause of YT but I can respond to posts. Maybe time for a little percussive maintenance? (light to medium taps with a hammer?)

I would put my trusty Werner ladder under the hatch so it would not hit my head 😂
My struts were replaced and now it is so hard for me to close the back hatch. Did I get the wrong ones or can I make them not so hard to close?
You may have the wrong struts installed. They are generally not adjustable - double check the specs. Good luck!

Replaced tailgate struts but tailgate will not close. It is stuck in the open position...can't even force it down..confused..?
