Unloading groceries, etc while holding up the hatch is not fun. Been whacked in the head more than once. After watching this, I guess it's time to do something about it. Very helpful video, sense of humor and down to earth.

Got to love it when how to videos leave in all the annoying stuff that happens (like losing the bit), makes it feel more natural and make me feel less klutzy when it happens

I had mine replaced back in 2012 when I first bought my 01 VW Beetle. Still have the Bug 🚙💨.
I went to a local auto store, Pepboys and they were nice enough to swap them out for me.
Your video was very informative. I did learn why they seem only malfunction/slip during the colder months vs the blazing desert 🏜 heat.
Funny, one of your furkids (dogs) is named Henry. My husband's name also Henry. He recently passed away on November 30th, 2021. I could also see and hear him saying, "no Tiff, we don't have any 4X4...smh 🤦🏽‍♂️." He once told the Natural Gas man not to show me how to light the gas stove with a match...should the power and such go out. I'm accident prone 😆.
Probably why you're dog 🐕 just happened to be named "Henry" maybe spelled differently for a girl dog. Gratitude for happy memory Sir...and the informative video.

Thank you for this great tutorial! I'll be heading to the auto parts store to grab a set. I've put it off on my 2006 mazda 3 hatchback through the winter even though it came down on my head a few times when I was standing under it. However last night, while unloading and being very low adjusting things in the trunk, it most likely started creeping down slowly but I was occupied, so it slammed down on my head and gave me a big bump, maybe on the far edges of a mild concussion! so absolutely no joke it's time to replace these. Thanks for showing us how and giving me the confidence to do it myself! 🙂

Yes, buy local from a Auto Parts store! Needed to do this a few years ago. Went to local auto parts store and purchased the lifts. An employees said I'll put them on if you'll hold up the lift gate. Deal! No charge!!... I did give him a generous tip, and a few months later was in there for windshield wipers and then a battery.

Ditch the 2 X4. Replace the hatch shocks/struts one at at a time. Raise the hatch and clamp on a set of vise grip pliers to the rod portion (silver in your case). This will keep the hatch from falling while you work on the other side. You will also have a side for reference in case you can't figure out how the new part goes on.
