My wife and I just replaced the struts in her 2011 CRV is less than 5 minutes. Got them from Amazon. No need to mess with the clips on the NEW struts...they just fit right on. Easy Peazy. The mechanic wanted 28.00 to put the ones I bought on the car. Thanks for an easy to understand video. You rock.
Hi Jim! One word of warning-don’t get complacent after you replace the first arm. It seems to hold the tailgate up but when I removed the second arm (4:07 of the video) the tailgate crashed down and the glass shattered. Lesson learned and wanted to warn others that one arm is not strong enough to hold up the tailgate alone. With both in, it holds fine.
Thank you so much for this really helpful video! I've been waiting to find someone to replace my Tailgate Lift Supports and because of this short tutorial, I did it myself and saved $200 in the process! (And, I am 64 yrs old and female!) Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much. I just need to replace my wife's tailgate lift support struts. I found this video and it was very helpful. Especially about using vise grips to keep the tailgate in place. It worked!
Thank you Jim, just replaced Tailgate lift supports on my 2008 Honda CRV. Your steps and explanations were so clear even a non car guy could do repair . Txs again.
This was a great video. I was able to change out quickly and all is working well now. My friend helped me by holding up the trunk while I replaced the strong arms. I got mine from Amazon for just under $50....easy peasy.
Tailgate struts typically last about 5 years. This is why the swinging rear gate in the old CRVs was a superior design. No tailgate strut failures, no lift gate crashing down on your head, no hands required to shut the gate (you just nudged it with your knee). Another bonus was a full-sized spare on the back that could be utilized without having to unpack the whole car. You won't think about this until you get a flat tire on a back country road, the car packed with wife, kids, and all of their stuff, and it's raining to boot.
I will add if your replacing a power lift arm on a 2018 crv its easiest to remove the bottom arm mount to fish the wires inside the fender where they plug. 10 min and $700 cheaper than the dealership.
I purchased Strongarm 6179 for replacement. One problem is that I cannot rotate the bottom socket to put in with bare hand(3:04) when installing the parts. Is it normal? I mean, any idea to rotate to the right angle? I didn't try with a wrench or plier because of the risk that damage the products.
So Honda's do have parts that wear out too. Amazing. :) I did this on the Dodge wagon we have too. It's a clean easy job but they are a little expensive.
So video improvements....Always start at the bottom attachment (don't break tail light). Get a friend to help since it only takes 5 minutes and you can break the rear glass with a dropped tailgate (Someone once suggested you can prop with a broom or stick if yo have no friends). Finally, buy the Honda original parts....this is one time when they last longer than the knock off brands. Bit more expensive but worth the money unless you are going to sell your WONDERFUL HONDA.

Which brand?
No clips to remove when you took the old ones off?
Auto zone charges $60 for 1 but thankfully I checked Amazon, it was $36 for a pair. Can’t wait to get mine fixed. Thanks for your video.
Watched loads of videos on here. You made it look so easy thank you
Great to hear!

Thank's Mike :)
Thanks, Jim! You and Rock Auto saved me at least $100 on these. I didn’t have 2 vice grips so used an old ski pole initially :)
Just got a quote from the dealer, $156 to replace them, thanks Jim, I'm going to do this myself.
I enjoy your videos Jim. Especially the Honda CRV maintenance and repair videos.

thankyou so much this is so helpful
use a broom to hold up the hatch door and also as a safety for the visegrips
I paid $25 for 2 of these on ebay. Replaced them in a few minutes . Probably saved at least $100 by not taking it to the Honda Dealer .
