Great video! Thank you very much! The dealer wanted to charge me over $500. I bought the parts online (using VIN as suggested) and saved me hundreds. I replaced both cylinders. For those considering replacing their struts, I used a standard screwdriver to release the catches on my 2015 XC70 T6. It worked fine, but I'm sure not as efficient as the nice, custom tool in the video. You just have to release it by feel. The right side was more difficult to release the catch for removal just because the cylinder is larger in diameter and getting the screw driver at the right angle to undo the catch took some trial and error. The left side was easier to remove, but a little harder to install. Once I secured the front of the left cylinder, I found the cylinder needed to be compressed a little in order to fit the piston end of the cylinder onto the boss. To do this, I used the handle end of a medium-sized adjustable wrench. The hole in the handle did a good job of containing the ball end of the cylinder while I levered the wrench handle against the opening in the frame to compress the cylinder and slide it onto the boss. Then just moving the catch to lock it on.
Hey Steven, I just did this on my 2015 xc70 too. To my surprise the left shock was much skinnier than the right one. Also, the left side has a seemingly unreplaceable electric actuator. Have you attempted to replace that too?
Excellent! Thank you! It took me 35 minutes after watching this video. My friendly neighborhood Volvo Dealer wanted to charge me 5 hours labor to do it (plus parts, tax, and "environmental fees").
I live in Korea. My mechanic quoted me usd5,000 to fix sagging tailgate on my xc70. According to him it is three motors which need to be replaced. At least now I know what to replace. Thank you so much. Edit: number of motors
Thank you. The dealer wanted $376 for this job, cost me $140 for the parts. It took an hour, but very few surprises. To get the 2nd side of the strut on, I need to push up the tailgate to the exact height and crowbar it onto the ball. Nothing too difficult, but would be easier with a helper!
Thanks for the clear instruction. The tailgate of my V70 landed on my head afew times during the last months, so I decided to replace the struts. With the help of your informative video-instruction it went well.
Dat klinkt goed, ik moet hetzelfde gaan doen met mijn V70. Meestal gaat die klep goed open, maar ik heb al een paar keer flink mijn kop gestoten toen 'ie wat lager kwam opeens. Thank you for this video. I needed to replace my 2016 XC70 tailgate struts and I am sure I couldn't have done it without your help! Your video saved me from paying the dealership $650.00.😎
Thanks to this great video I managed to change the gas struts effortlessly, all work was done in an hour. I didn't use original Volvo struts but bought Stabilus 437135 which are exactly the same (Stabilus is OEM Volvo supplier) but cheaper.
Perfect instructions.....I have a 2010 XC70 and it worked great...it turned out that only my right strut was expired....so, after I fixed that one, I did not want to push my luck....and, everything re-assembled perfectly. That is a rare occurrence for me. LOL Thanks again for doing this!
Thank you so much for this video! I did this tonight on my wife's 2008 V70 and everything went perfectly. I had put off doing this for a long time because I thought it was going to be a real pain but it was actually quite simple following your directions. Cheers!
@VolvoSweden- Always love watching your videos and learning from them. This is another repair I wouldn't have been able to do without your detailed installation video. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and help us all.
Thanks so much for this video! Just replaced two struts on my 2013 XC70, and it took about 90 minutes following this guidance. Getting the clips off the front ends of the struts is a bit difficult; I used a small flathead screwdriver and did it mostly by feel. One important note: If you do NOT have a powered liftgate, both struts are the same (I used Stabilus parts, which are identical to the Volvo struts I removed). There are a lot of people commenting about having different struts on the left and right - I assume that's because they have a powered liftgate.
2015 XC70 - Notes on the correct order of ops. The newer XC70s have a motorized tailgate with 2 DIFFERENT gas springs. The left side is a skinny cylinder, and the right side the fat one shown here. The skinny one is a tad long, and so it's easiest to install with BOTH old lifters removed. I recommend this order: 1. remove the RIGHT side lifter then the LEFT 2. install the LEFT side before the RIGHT Installing: Inspect the gas spring first to make sure the end-caps are oriented correctly to mate with their respective balls...the end cap can be rotated if needed. Before attaching the front end-cap to its ball, make sure the rear end-cap of the spring is located next to its ball, and oriented to mate.. The tailgate must be forced open as high as it can go, and propped up there with a pole during this work. Even in that position, a about 6mm of compression to the LEFT gas spring will be needed when installing -- use a large screwdriver or crow bar (it takes 440 lbs. of force). Thanks again for this very helpful video.
I replaced my 2015 xc70 tailgate struts with OEM Stabilus struts (Stabilus makes Volvo struts without the Volvo branding for 30% less cost). The left strut, while same part number as the Volvo oem part number, was tough to insert due to the strut being a little bit longer even with the hatch fully extended open. To get it to fit, I had to clip in the front of the strut first, then use a screwdriver between roof frame and head of strut to slightly compress the strut. Once compressed, it quickly slipped into place. Great instructional video, thanks!
Very helpful. Ordered the new part and took me about 1.5 hours to remove the old ones and get the new ones installed. Hard to see what you're doing fm the back but was able to fit a light inside next to the window, that way I could see were the catch clip has a flat notch to fit a thin flat screw driver to pop the catch. After that it was pretty straight forward.
Hello Juri, thanks for sharing this topic. Next time you experience a failing bump stop you first try placing some washers under the bump stops. This way you can solve the height which is needed to pop-out the tailgate.
I know Im asking randomly but does any of you know of a method to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot the login password. I would love any help you can offer me
@Clyde Luca Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thanks for the tip of the tailgate bumpers. I replaced all 4 and the gate is working better. I also had Volvo do a software update which they said may improve the tailgate function.
UPDATE: My XC70, a 2013, used one of the large supports with the spring on the right, on the left it had a conventional gas cylinder. I was able to easily replace the left hand one without pulling the headliner support up near the rear seat. I did pull it to do the one on the right side. It's great not to have the hatch hitting me in the head any longer.
Excellent Video! Very informative and you cover all the steps to do closely. I have a 2009 XC T6 and the power tailgate is starting to slowly come down after opening. Thank you so much for this your time and effort has greatly improved my ride and my life. I have a 2008 Volvo XC 70 Japanese import V6. I just want to add. I used a plasterboard ceiling prop to hold up the tailgate, Place it in the middle and make sure it pushes the lid open as far as it goes. I had no resistance removing the two gas springs as when the tailgate is forced to max they just pop off and on with ease. (obviously loosening the spring loaded clips) Secondly I purchased the following BILSTEIN gas struts @t Dont purchase them from Amazon give an independent business your trade. These are half the price of Volvos, Just as good and you can trust them as Febi bilstein make very good gear. My car use to squeak like old floor boards when on anything other than perfect roads. Now its squeak free. Now when i open and close the boot its ghostly silent. Part number 36209 (This could be just UK or Europe though). Note that when you have a XC70/V70 whith an electric opening door, you need two different struts. The left one with a spring around it and the left one without. At the left side a strut with spring wouldn’t even fit, because the connections are not in line but twisted a quarter. At the right side they are in line.

thx for very good tutorial. I have repleaced struts in v70 2008 and now tailgate does not fall. i have still small problem with closing - i have adjust bumpers and even add some spacers under bottom bumpers but when i close there is "bam" and motor that pulls the lock don't work - (becouse tailgate fall with enough strenght) when i close it whith hand pulling motor work ok. can it stay like this?
its a normal. it is on modern cars that the drive always falls short of the tailgate. On these cars, a door pull drive is installed, in case the door does not slam shut immediately
I have already replaced the pieces that you have recommended, but the tailgate with the remote control does not open. He makes an attempt, tries to open up but after a second he closes again. My feeling is that in the opening phase, pushes more towards the left side and the lock hangs during the first shot instead of opening completely. If you help the tailgate with your hands, by taking it on the license plate holder, then the tailgate opens correctly with the remote control
Hi, many thanks for a great video, I have xc70 2015 cross road model. The car does not have the tailgate lift installed. The tailgate does not have the button for reclosing. My question to you is do you know if the electrical opening&closing can be installed? Do I need a complete new tailgate or can I buy the parts and rebuild the existing one? The car key has the botton of opening the tailgate and also there is button by the steering wheel for the same purpose but nothing happens when pressing them. I guess the lock is purely mechanical.. best regards, Sid
Hi, I wanted to know if you can help me with some instructions on how to replace the hydraulic opening and closing pump and motor on the tailgate of a 2009 Volvo XC70. Thank you
What if tailgate needs some help to be opened, but once opened stays put, closes just fine. It feels like if electric motor didn't have enough power. Does struts needs replacement as well?
hi I replaced the pistons with 2 stabilus as you advised. Now the hatch no longer falls on my head but remains open, finally. However, the automatic opening does not work correctly. Using the key, the tailgate tries to open but after a click closes because on the right side it does not seem to open sufficiently to open the total unlock. Do you have any advice for me? IF I help the tailgate during opening, on the right side, then it opens completely by itself, as it did originally. I want to clarify that a lower rubber is broken, so in closing there is no limit switch. but the profile of the tailgate is in line with the headlights, jackets rests on 3 rubber pads.
Mine identical 2011 XC70 gets the same problem and I was looking for parts to fix it and a tutorial video was even better if possible.. then this perfect video was found! Thank you so much even after 5 years from the day since this one was posted. Not sure if I'll get any reply, but maybe someone else here could also help to answer: Does this part 31217640 fit electric tailgate on both sides? As I found the other part number 31690441 was described fitting LEFT side on electric tailgate. Confusing.
My wife's XC70 had the strut problem and I said to myself, " I bet volvosweden has a TH-cam on this." You are the best!

Excellent video!!
Nice video! Thank you!
IMPORTANT ADVICE, CHANGE ONLY RIGHT SIDE, LEFT SIDE IS HARD AF LOL AND IT IS ANOTHER TYPE OF GAS STRUT
Thank you so much...I hope I can do this successfully...the Dealer wants $$$$$$$ to do this for me.
Nice job man...very good explaining!! Top video
Thank you for your clear instructions.
The link to ebay is broken--is there an updated link to the item without springs that saves money?
Very informative snd helpful, thanks
What a Legend!!! Thanks
Fab vid;well done .
very educative. Thank you
I have already replaced the pieces that you have recommended, but the tailgate with the remote control does not open.
Hi,
I wanted to know if you can help me with some instructions on how to replace the hydraulic opening and closing pump and motor on the tailgate of a 2009 Volvo XC70.
Thank you
Very good videos!!
What if tailgate needs some help to be opened, but once opened stays put, closes just fine. It feels like if electric motor didn't have enough power. Does struts needs replacement as well?
That you very much for your tips!!
great video guys
I enjoy the great instructions
hi I replaced the pistons with 2 stabilus as you advised.
Thank you for the video, when you gonna replace the V belt for the same vehicle please?
Thank you.
Great video, thank you. I'm new to Volvo, so is it the same on the V70 as the XC please?
Comrade you killing us ))) 5:41 before Putin back everything together...
Mine identical 2011 XC70 gets the same problem and I was looking for parts to fix it and a tutorial video was even better if possible.. then this perfect video was found! Thank you so much even after 5 years from the day since this one was posted.
Not sure if I'll get any reply, but maybe someone else here could also help to answer:
Does this part 31217640 fit electric tailgate on both sides? As I found the other part number 31690441 was described fitting LEFT side on electric tailgate. Confusing.
Hello. The hydraulic and electric tailgates use different parts. Use your VIN to check.
Great video! how much time do i have to plan for replacing the dampers? where do you get this special tool?
Great video as usual.
Does it have a hydraulic cylinder plus 2 gas spring struts?
