Atlas was originally created as tool and personal realm for Elder - to serve his original role. As story of Conquerors of Atlas changed - Elder wasn't banished alone. Sirus - leader of original exiles was accidentally banished with him. And with that - Elder essence was fused with Sirus. Sirus changed by that drastically, in particularly losing ability to feel most emotion. though still craving for it. It's ended up with Sirus destroying Oriath, hoping that it will stir some emotions in him. Killing Sirus could end up Elder for good... or, it could simply release Elder, and he yet will return one day, and will attempt to reclaim Atlas, which belongs to him by birthright. Maven and two other Eldrich entities are somewhat kins of Elder. And just like Elder - over time they perverted their original role: Maven was supposed to observe and study conflicts. But she ended up simply creating conflicts for sake of conflicts, as personal entertainment. Another entity, backed up by his champion - Searing Exarch (yes, that was merely a champion, not entity itself, just as we were champion for Maven) - was created for the role of seeking purity. He perverted that role by desire cleanse everything in purifying flames. Yet another Eldrich entity, backed up by his champion known as Eater of World - was created for the evolutionary role. To study life in all forms and try creating better life. He perverted that role by desire of consuming all life, leaving horrible abomination in his wake. All 3 Eldrich entities noticed death of Elder and was seeking to claim Elder's prize - Atlas. Maven was least of all evil, as she was seeking to claim only Atlas, and nothing more. Other though, would they claim Atlas - would guaranty turn gaze on Wraeclast next. Hence why we were tasked to assist Maven specifically, ensuring that she alone would control Atlas. There are certainly many more of Eldrich entities. Specifically, we also fought two of lesser - Black Star and Infinite Hunger. And of course, Grand Eldrich entity - Light Keeper also out there somewhere.
Thank you so much for putting this lore series together. I've been playing the game for over six years and never knew what the story was. Other videos on it were so long that I never watched them; the summaries you've made are exactly the right level of detail and brevity for me. Thanks very much!
Great video! Few notes... I would be careful with wordings, The Elder is not representative of chaos, and only a subsection of destruction which is entropy. It is Nihilism incarnate. Chaos represents life and possibility, and The Elder's version of destruction wants to make sure EVERYTHING is destroyed. And it not not outside of time, in fact the very way the we banish them is by throwing them at the end of time. SIrus went insane from being trapped alongside the elder. Forced to watch everything he cared about and loved be erased with time he grew detached and through some method found a way to break out unlike the elder. He destroyed Oriath to see if he could get any form of emotional push just anything to get some feeling again, it is also why he attacks Zana. Zana is apologizing to him because she feel responsible for his fate, despite her best efforts she just wanted to close the book on this chapter of the Atlas, which is the place she lost her father, her friends, her lover, and her home, just to have a chance to live in a future where she wouldn't have to worry. Then The Maven happened. The Maven cries were already heard. The Envoy did not tell us off, he was giving mankind a funeral. The Elder did not try to claim The Atlas, The Atlas claimed The Elder, it is a designed prison to hold the entity's attention so that it won't decay away anything that is more important. Better dreams be eaten than the foundation ideas that make up the universe. Fun watch though, super excited for PoE2, I really hope there will be more stuff going on with the Eldritch side but it ain't looking like it at least for a while!

Sincerely hope they basically gloss over the lore later than act 4 of the orginal PoE. First game felt like it had a strong story up to dominus and then just went off the rails as they didn't know where to go with the story just bolting random stuff on.
Agreed. I definitely enjoyed the first three acts the most, lore wise. Act four was also good in theory, supposedly culminating in a fight against the root of evil, aka the Beast (pseudo Diablo more or less) but the delivery of this storyline was less than stellar. This whole nonsense of fighting the gods that comes after that is hopefully retconned or at least never mentioned again. Path of Exile's story was at its best for me when it was centered on the inhospitable, cursed land that is Wraeclast where the player is sent to die, slowly unraveling more of its backstory, learning how it came to be and what it is at the heart of it all.
Man, I hope that the story of PoE 2 is kept more human. Close to the ground than PoE2. It's hard to find some cosmic level beings as tragic. So far PoE is showing the human in the conflict and I hope it will remain this way. We do not need to see the Lovecraftian creatures to find them scary, we simply need to see how but a glimpse of them breaks minds.
I don't think enough people are talking about the King in the mists just chilling in A1 of POE2. The affliction mists escaping into Wraeclast is a huge deal.

I hope that the Countess is Zana. But the twist is that in the end is that Zana has turned into Eldritch being while traveling in maps and the Countess is just her reflection. And her true form has been locked into the tower surrounded by the maze.
We don't explore maps in poe 2, we explore wraeclast, thats why we don't put maps in the device, we put waystones (referring to the waypoints we found in wraeclast in poe 1) so in poe 2 we are not exploring the atlas ( the atlas does not have waypoint and is the realm of dreams )
iirc, the endgam ein poe2 has nothing to do with the map device and all the events are taking place physically on wraeclast. I'm fairly certain it was mentioned either in the reveal stream or was discussed during the Q&A. At the very least I recall for sure that one of the lead designers saying the current endgame for poe2 has nothing to do with the eldritch beings, but they MIGHT bring them back later.
Wait....didn't they literally say that the Atlas in PoE2 is literally Wraeclast? Not a cosmic Atlas? If anything the trailers and announcement seem to hint that the only time we use a "map device" is for specific trips to otherworldly domains, but the general "mapping" is in literal Wraeclast. Or at least that's what I've been under the impression of. Can't wait to see for myself this weekend. :)
I see quite a bit of similarities in lore of Elden Ring and PoE - eldritch beings using envoys and champions to claim territories and feed upon them, imposing their own order. We have quite a big emphasis on trees in both games too 🤔 Coincidence? Yes, probably. But geniuses tend to think alike
I'm 90% sure that the new Pinnacle boss is Doryani. the endgame tower is sealed by 4 Vaal generals that apparently survived the Cataclysm caused by Doryani. the lore never stated that Doryani died. he was trying to give all the Vaal Immortality but failed... or maybe he didn't. perhaps the Cataclysm gave Immortality to Doryani and sealing him in the tower was the only Viable Punishment.
I don't believe so, the tower is locked by 3 tablets and 3 individual faction looking for the power want to have them all and unseal it, not just the Vaal, Doryani is actually seen as 1 of 2 lieutenants guarding if not one of the generals, he was only a scientist under service of Atziri and in all honesty his goal may have been to give all Vaal immortality (by avoiding the collapse event) he didn't fail entirely as Atziri became a constant in every universe. We actually fight Doryani in Act 3. The tower is also Precursor in nature, not Vaal. This is The Atlas we are talking about, Doryani's punishment for not stopping the collapse was the annihilation of the civilization he cares about, in my speculation I assume understanding he couldn't save everything he found a way to immortalize the biggest symbol of the Vaal at the time being Atziri. Besides that the only reason people talk so much about him in lore is because of the obsession with virtue gems. A small note about that Kalgurans can't use them, as if there is something about virtue gems hunger for some energy only people of Wraeclast have. (Rog casting a fireball is actually him harnessing starlight with runes, not virtue gems)

Wait, I'm a little confused. Does this mean that everything that happened in the dlcs before Siege is totally retconned, and only the Siege story is the one being used as canon moving forward?
Sort of - instead of US being in each of the stories, a different exile replaces us, with us coming in at the Siege story after they've killed Sirus, Elder is gone, etc.
Honestly, I like the stories they told but I find it confusing the idea of having basically multiple realities each season. I get that it's very convenient for storytelling since it allows to let go of a story, pause it or start a new one without the consequences of the previous stories but I find it makes it difficult to be engaged with it and it's characters. Like, one expansion we are killing these maddened champions but two expansions later we are in an alternate reality where we did nothing and they went to destroy the planet. I think it makes it hard to feel that there's something at stake if everything gets retconned every now and then. At least, that's my take from how I understood POE1 handles expansions. Then again, I might've completely misunderstood...hopefully. It sure makes for cool boss fights, though.
My boring expectations aside, amazing vid. It really summarized very well the major plotlines of POE1. I think this will definitely help in making sense or catching some references of lore stuff in POE2.
Lore is HUGE! D2's lore was easily one of the best and most intriguing and so is Elden Ring. It adds so much to the game and the "but why?" is what keeps you going. Last Epoch's story is as shallow as a dish and the story is about as boring as they come. Hero saves the day Yea! I stopped playing within the first ten minutes.
