  • In this last edition of the weekly rundown we look at a question from Lisa Allen who wonders how we know when to go back to bed when we have gotten up to do something enjoyable.
    We also look at a question from Katherine who wonders why we continue to struggle with insomnia even though we face what we have feared every night.

    Hi Daniel! I just want to say I read some of your book This is Natto last night, and for the first night in the past 3 weeks of this dark, depressing insomnia stage I was able to sleep more than just 3-4 hours ( even though I’m unsure how much I slept because I didn’t look at the time at all lol!) Not only sleep, but to be able to do so without ear plugs, a eye mask and sleep without switching from my bed to the couch back and forth. This was just the first night of this, and I know this may be a long recovery ahead. But I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your book gave me so much hope. And your TH-cam videos have been so enlightening. I’m truly so thankful for this. I have never experienced insomnia till starting a few weeks ago and it came out of nowhere, so I truly thought I was going crazy. It was such a dark place full of anxiety, and extreme depression. I even quit my job because I thought I wasn’t going to get better. I went to the doctor and was prescribed trazadone, but never ended up taking it because I did not want to rely on meds to sleep. I was so close to taking it, then I found your book on Reddit on an insomnia page as I was trying to feel less alone, and someone reccomended your book! Man I’m so grateful, and I will be recommending this to anyone that maybe having insomnia.

      I like your story I had the same problem too but worse for me there would be nights where I couldn't sleep not even 5 mins a night. I was taking over the countersleep aids for months like melatonin chamomile tea etc.
      I'm doing very well now and still improving and just incase I fall back into relapse I have cbti, I know it's sounds cheesy and Bs but it really helps lol.
      Yeah sleeping pills don't scare me only concern is it's bad for the heart and all (I wouldn't take it anyways) don't worry anybody can sleep even people who took sleeping pills for years even had success. What I will say is I kinda get little bit anxiety but I do fall asleep fast now the only thing sometimes like twice a month I get only 5 hours of sleep which is nothing to worry about since it's only 2 times a month and I see improvements now and then. And God Bless You 🙏

      @@last2first167 I’m so sorry you’ve ever had to go through this as well. It can be so lonely. I know this is gonna be a long journey ahead! The night before I got “good sleep” and last night I got probably about 4 hours of sleep from 6am-10:30am. I’m trying not to think to much into it, and just remember that this is okay.

    Thank you for your videos they’re immensely helpful! I have struggled off and on with insomnia over the years but I had been doing really well for about 4 years when this recent bout of not sleeping happened, finding your TH-cam channel was a gift from God and has helped me understand so much about insomnia and helped me to understand acceptance and true surrender is the way! I have a much more peaceful time with wakefulness now and it doesn’t scare me like it had in the past. Please keep up what you’re doing as you’re helping sooo many people!

    The idea of getting out of bed if i can't sleep is not enjoyable to me. My house is dark and cold and looks like a hostile place for me to be at night all by myself. But traditional teaching always tell you, get out of bed if you can't sleep! And i was like - But I don't want to, it feels like I'm forcing myself to do something. Can i just be awake in bed and just read a book? Nooo you have to get out of bed, its the law of good sleep! Lol But what i hear from Daniel is for the first time - just do what you want as long as its not aiming for you to fall asleep. So does it mean i can stay in my bed? Yesterday as usual was struggling to sleep, was too tired for any activities either and i just told myself, well my eyes are too tired to be open, but I don't want to sleep. So.. I'll just lay with eyes closed. That's it. Not trying to sleep, just close my eyes and daydream, or plan my day tomorrow. And a couple of times cought myself falling asleep, was terrifyed of it (cause that's my thing, my body jolts me back up when im just on the brink of drifing off). I embraced it, and eventually just drift off to sleep without the usual anguish. That beeing said, I'm just happy i dont have to get out of bed at night lol

    Hi Daniel, I’ve been using sleep restriction and getting sunlight exposure in the morning and I feel like I can get better sleep. One thing stopping me is that I feel a bit restless in the hour up until I try to sleep and then when I’m in bed feeling comfortable and feeling like I’m about to sleep my brain sort of sabotages my sleep and I get hot and anxious and I can’t sleep very well for the rest of the night. How do I stop this?

      Hi Kasun,
      Whatever leads us to see that we don’t need to do anything and don’t need any rules for peaceful sleep… I think that’s nice, and the reason traditional CBTi can be tricky.
      As for the sabotaging part, check our Hypnic awareness playlist, there are many wake sleep transition experiences that it helps to understand

    Hi Coach Daniel,
    I have a question...do you think there is any correlation between length of time experiencing hyperarousal to becoming asymptomatic?
    The reason I ask is that besides your content I have also been looking at other sleep coaches' advice. Beth Kendall says something that makes sense to me, that insomnia is a 24 hour condition and that through neuroplasticity we can retrain the brain to move away from that state. I am a psychology graduate and trained counsellor (in CBT) so I know a fair bit about neuroplasticity. Laying down new neural pathways takes time and often the longer a behaviour has been present or the more complex it is, the longer it can take to retrain.
    What are other people's experiences of moving beyond hyperarousal long term?

      Hi Lisa,
      You know, I have so many students who’ve said “I should be fine by now because I only had insomnia for 2 months” and equally many who say “I should be better by now because I’ve dealt with anxiety my whole life”. In both circumstances, the attempt to predict is the only thing that I think is predictive.
      When we no longer attempt to predict, then that’s often a big part of leaving the struggle.

    Hi coach...I am currently doing pretty well with my sleep getting 7 8 hrs fully rested sleep from last week. Due to some reasons I have to move out from my house & have to shift another place just by knowing this I have anxiety already of not sleeping. How can I handle this situation bcos I think I was doing well & I am leaving the struggle. Will it hamper my recovery?

    @thesleepcoachschool when you say to accept wakefulness when you stay in bed, would that look something like, just lying in bed, not tossing/turning, just kind of lying still until it’s time to get up?

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Lisa,
      Many who read Guy Meadows think (I think actually the word is misunderstand) that one should just lie still in bed. But - then “just lying in bed” becomes anything but “just lying in bed” because then it’s an attempt to achieve acceptance of wakefulness

    • @lisaallen5140
      @lisaallen5140 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. I think we just lay in bed still, because sleep will never come if we are out of the bed, doing something

    • @lisaallen5140
      @lisaallen5140 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wouldn’t leaving the bed and doing an alternative activity like reading or watching tv also be an attempt to accept wakefulness? I guess I’m not understanding the difference. Both approaches of staying in bed or getting out of bed seem to address the same issue

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mm, yes, there’s a common fear that we will miss out on any chance of getting sleep unless we stay in bed eyes closed… but often that turns into quite a frustrating time of waiting and trying… sometimes it’s the counterintuitive way that helps

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  ปีที่แล้ว

      It could become exactly that - a sleep effort. Which illustrates that it’s now what we do that actually matters… but the intent behind

    Hey daniel, I hope this can be featured in your first video next Friday about comments because it sounds like a great idea.
    I typically get anywhere from 4 to 6 hours on any given night and it’s usually broken up. But there are nights where I sleep really well like seven or eight hours and for the rest of the day, I am like celebrating it, and putting so much importance on it that when I go to bed the following night, I feel more pressure Than before, and end up sleeping very little or not at all. When you have less than five hours of sleep every day for over a year, it’s hard not to be happy about a really good nights sleep, because you can feel the physical difference in your body and mind and you crave more of it. I know that asking any question to improve sleep will do the exact opposite but I currently feel like I’m out of solutions and options and just need some direct guidance.
    Thanks
    Brandon

      Hi Brandon,
      I’ll keep this in mind for next Friday. You know, this is a very common situation and if you browse you’ll find teaching here in win/lose thinking and how we can be glad whenever something nice happens without thinking it a victory or accomplishment

      @@thesleepcoachschool8192 yeah I believe I did see that video a while back but I find that on any given day, I don’t think about sleep for 99% of the day. But as I approach the bed at night, the thoughts start to kind of linger, and from there, it depends on how mentally, brave and fearless I am
