- This is hands down the best vehicle that I have ever owned! The first gen Tundra has been an amazing Toyota Tundra overlanding truck for me. Sitting at 237,300 miles, she still drives like a reliable and capable Cadillac offroad! This is the quintessential Colorado mountain vehicle.
The best truck, I have loved it! This very well may be the most reliable truck out there!

Those tundras are the best looking and size. Always wanted one. The new ones are to damn big in my opinion.
Bad ass truck
I really did love that vehicle Apa. I have a feeling that the redesigned Tacoma will be very close in specifications to the 1st gen Tundra but probably a little bit shorter. Part of me wanted to go with a newer Tundra but those things are huge and have a much harder time navigating tight off roads.

Well, glad you're happy. I would have just spent a few dollars on this truck and kept it. No way I'd get rid of this for a Tacoma.
I currently own a 2003 tundra sr5 v8 rwd with 289,000 miles. Just bought it and I'm already upgrading the original suspension parts with oem parts. This truck is definitely reliable as it still has a lot of original parts still on it, alternator, a/c compressor, starter, p.s pump. I can make this truck last easily for the next 10 years. Toyota has some of the best reliability.
This gives me great hope for my tundra with 250k miles
Just bought an 02 with 259k runs like a champ. Replacing the front and rear shocks and lower ball joints.
Good truck but you’ll be changing a lot of parts at this mileage.Mine 270,000 but had to change alternator, radiator, mass air sensors , throttle position sensor ,spark plug cables , control arm bushings ,knock sensor and lower control bolt joins things just started to give up on my truck one after another. And if you live in California I change catalytic converter , 2 censors and some canister that I forgot the name of. So I could pass smog
Why oem? There us alot better than own now.
@jonc2914 because if you research it, alot of 1st gen tundra owners highly recommend oem lower balljoints. Aftermarket balljoints keep failing at a faster rate versus the oem lower balljoints. If you plan to keep the truck for a while, then go oem for less headaches.
Why a Tacoma??? and especially a 3rd gen Tacoma... The powertrain on the 3rd gen Tacoma would be a major downgrade from this Tundra's VVT-i 2UZ with a proven A750 5 speed transmission. You'll get a couple of mpg better fuel economy but down on torque and get a crappy six speed transmission. For overlanding, the MTS and crawl control on the new Tacoma is not necessary unless you are tackling harder terrain. This Tundra's got the standard A-TRAC that is good enough for overlanding. Plus aftermarket lockers are not that expensive to add on.
This Tundra was beast! I was actually hoping to find a good used 2nd gen taco and also get a good used 1 ton truck. As the world would have it...... any decent used taco with 65,000 ish miles at the time cost about 6k less than brand new... nope. I'm working towards the perfect combo. Taco and 1 ton. Or in a few years when new taco and tundra get facelifted and quirks worked out, trade for one of those. Cheer.

I got my first truck in January and it’s an 03 AC cab and I love it. It’s got a leveler kit, cold air intake, aftermarket wheels and tires, and an aftermarket exhaust.

quick question at what millage did you replace the timing belt or is it still running with the factory one?
Should always replace the timing ⏱ belt every 90k/100k miles or 10years which ever comes 1st
I had a 2000 and 2002 access cab and loved them. I now have 2004 tacoma double cab and also love it. The best trucks ive ever owned. The tundra was nice with more power than the tacoma. The tacoma is fun to drive being that its a bit smaller. I like the tundra better than any 2005+ tacoma.
I bought a '00 back in '08. Just passed it down to my 16yo with 280k, and replaced it with a '04 DC 4x4 unicorn. 49k, garage kept. Like New. I'm torn on doing much to it. (but I will)

i’m interested in getting a ‘06 1st gen tundra, 1:32 what configuration comes with a 12.1” ground clearance? and 3:49 do all double cabs come with a 6.5’ bed?
All TRD double cabs (full 4 doors) have around 12 inches of ground clearance. Usually TRD models have an extra 1 or 2 inches more than their non TRD counterparts. All ACs and DCs came with a 6.5 inch (ish) bed, single cabs had a 8ft bed. There are no short bed models for first gens. If you don't tow over 5-6k lbs regularly a first gen tundra is the perfect truck.
390k on mine and it’s absolutely the best truck I’ve ever owned .
Mine is at 234k and still no issues biggest issue since ownership was lower control arm bushings and that’s it

I also have a 2006 Toyota Tundra SR5 Double Cab in Phantom Gray. Bench seats front and back. So comfortable. Serviced every 5000 miles and runs like a champ. Every time I think of selling it I talk myself out of it. Seat covers on since day one and the original upholstery is beautiful.
How often did you change timing belt ?
It’s sleeker design that the newer models. Essentially the Sequia with a bed.

Im looking at one today .My Dad had one and at 397.000 miles he gave it away to one of his best friend.Dad passed away and the man who has the truck took it and painted it put a lift kit etc etc on it and named the truck .BIG JACK .I asked him if i could buy it and his reply was its not for sale and never will be.
So i sold my Ford and now im a Tundra man for life.
Coming from someone who went from this to a new Tacoma….no Tacoma can fill those shoes….Tacoma has half the power and half the interior space with the same outside dimensions 😂
2003 sr5 acces cab,with 160,000 miles and its unbelievable, has the short ram intake k/n.and makes it sound really nice.
I went to the ATC website to find the cap you have. But the site only lists a "Stepside" and also only a regular or access cab config. Not the double cab that you have. I also have a double cab and would like cap. Can you share what config you used?

I've had a 2005 DC silver. I only have 150k miles on it. I've owned it 15 yrs now drive it everyday.
Good vehicles. I had a 1st gen Tacoma and it was very nice also.
There were definitely built more heavy and substantial back then.
2004 DC owner, had it for a decade, only 165k on the odometer, gonna take it another decade at least

I don't see why you're getting rid of it for another Truck, you seem to love it so much. You spoke of another vehicle with better mileage. Wouldn't it be cheaper to get less miles per gallon? And not fork over another $40,000 for Another vehicle.

I have a first gen. Same spec! Ko2 and a spacer up front! I love that truck. Went camping in the mojave joshua tree and all over. Drove it on a great many road trips. At 130k…rod knock..done. Why mine? I ended up buying a 3rd gen taco too for many of the same reasons. I’m selling the tundra to my neighbor who will swap another 2uzfe in. He’ll roll by and my cheek will have a tear roll down 🥹

I always considered your truck to be gen. 2. 3 inches wider than my 2000 access cab. Different tailgate too. No double cab was avail. In the early years. Perfect truck 'till it was totaled. Went with a new Tacoma in '17. TRD Sport access cab 4x4, 6 ft. bed. A short wheelbase go anywhere truck. Did not want the full size beast.
I went from a 2013 Tacoma to a 2002 Tundra and I LOVE the Tundra! The Tacoma 4 door has the most useless back seat ever!
I had a 2001 first Gen tundra, best truck I've ever owned period! 4.7 V8 was fantastic with the normal maintenance, plugs and wires, and timing belt and water pump, go another 100,000 miles! Transmission went out at 300,000 miles, but I bought it with 105,000 and the previous owner had towed heavy horse trailers with it, so me getting another 200,000 out of it was pretty good in my opinion! Went from that to a frontier, it was ok, but just not the same build quality. Now own a 2017 Tacoma TRD sport, I like it but not as much as the tundra, seating not as comfortable, especially for long drives, and even though it's built well I really don't like the drivetrain, feels like a heavy dog, always searching up and down transmission wise and just feels gutless, like I have to be pedal down at all times. It's better in tow mode, or using the etc mode, more responsive. I know there's a flash or update that can possibly help it, but really loved that tundra!

The only thing wrong with it is it isn’t 4WD 😒 we do have a 4WD ram for when we need to go to our hunting property but I can’t drive across mud and grass to avoid traffic in my tundra lol
The tundra is a great truck. Got it 5.5 years ago with 136k
Some maintenance but the engine is strong and so is the transmission.
Had a 2017 Tacoma and sold it for a 2003 tundra. Best decision I ever made. Don’t get me wrong the Tacoma was great but the tundra takes the cake in every catagory.
Dumbest decision ever to trade that truck for a Tacoma. It's literally the same car except the tundra is better with V8. Gas mileage is the same too.

I love my 2005 4wd DC. I bought it new and it is in excellent condition. All stock with ARE topper. Just turned 99k. New shocks and struts installed. It has never failed me and does everything I ask it to all year long!
I have a 2002 sr5 tundra extended cab that my Dad gave to me. So I've been going through it and replacing everything because I don't want to get rid of it. I am so impressed with the performance and reliability
I went from a 3rd gen double cab to a 1st gen Tundra. 2006 Limited Double Cab. Big upgrade in my opinion. With 10's of thousands saved I've been able to modernize it. Have more tech then the new 3rd gen. Newer ain't always better.....Grew tired of the sitting position and the endless gear hunting. Not to mention the laughable tech packages Toyota offers.

@dirtnsmores Kenwood 10 inch screen DMX1037S receiver with Wireless Android/apple car play integrated back up camera and steering wheel controls, google assistant. All new F&R speakers and tweeters, amp bypass. TPMS monitoring system.big brake caliper upgrade mod. I now have a system that is better than what is found in new trucks. I'm all in about $3K. Still less than a $65k new truck.

Brother, I got 235k miles, 2000 v8 trd pro 4x4. By far the best truck. I agreee. This is the best truck of all time tbh. It legit is. Idc what anyone says. Best stats too for performance for all those style trucks in the early 2000s.

Nice Video! I came from a 17 Taco TRD Sport 4x4 to an 05 DC 4x4. Tundra is such a better truck in so many ways. Highly recommended the 1st Gen.

I have a 2003 tundra Access Cab 4x4 with 323k miles with basic maintenance. It has Bilstein 5100 all around, OME springs Firestone airbags at the rear. Front winch bumpers TRD Tacoma wheels. The overall size is ideal for my needs. Only thing I would add would be an ARB rear lockers and a mid rise topper with windoors. At least you didn’t replace it with a Dodge jk😊 thanks for posting.

I found an absolute gem. this exact truck, one owner, 50,000 miles. This is my dream truck and I am so thankful. Curious if anyone has ever done a pass-through window in these trucks since that back window rolls down. I'm going to live in my truck for a good bit of time and I'm looking into it but can't find anyone that's done it before.
How much did you pay for it if I might ask? Looking at a 2006 at that mileage right now.

That's a good looking truck. Are you going to get the front bug/wind deflector for the hood of your new Tacoma?
The bug deflector treated me well on this vehicle and am thinking about it for the Taco. There definitely are pros and cons. On the taco, I don't particularly like how the traditional style lifted up deflector looks.

I did consider it Peter. Had a very thorough and difficult decision to make as I also need a larger vehicle for towing. The new Colorado looks very nice but is unproven. Last of the line 3rd gen "dialed in" Taco for reliable, parts, support, mechanical knowledge for the win. Now, I need to find a big gold nugget so that I can afford a 3/4 - 1 ton to complement the Taco.
Man, I love this car, Tundra 1&2 generation, black, tonneau cover, push bar (would be ideal 😂), I’m living in far east of Russia and I can say -yes, we have a lot of those cars on our roads

I have a feeling that the redesigned Tacoma will be very close in size to this vehicle. Full size trucks are around 3-6 inches wider than this one which makes tight trail driving impossible. Remember, this is just my opinion and you are free to yours.

1st Gen Tundra, Access Cab or Regular Cab, is actually smaller than late model Tacomas. It's mid-size I think.
It’s not a midsize. It’s a full-size pick up look it up.
@@raulbueno4284 It's full size circa 1999, a true half-ton. Compared to circa 2020 trucks, the 2023 F150 is 250" x 87" x 80", weighs 5740 lbs, and hauls 14000 lbs. The 1st Gen Tundra with largest configuration is only 230" x 75" x 71.3", weighs 4500 lbs, and hauls 7100 lbs. So it's much smaller than modern "full-size" trucks in all ways, compares a lot closer with what modern carmakers are calling "midsize."
