You and me both.. same boat here! I’m avoiding new cause I don’t want payments but the prices for these old trucks are ridiculous. I keep finding them on dealers lots (mostly shady dealers) and I pay to have them pre-inspected but end up finding out they have multiple problems so I end up walking away. 🤷🏻♂️
Absolutely enjoyed it I could only find 2wd/rwd in my town so I drove a good 2 hours for a low miles 127k is like a drop in the bucket zero rust I do more sand driving so I ended up selling it unfortunately biggest regret ever
I heard the throttle body spacer is a good upgrade too never had time to deal with it but if you really need a pickup asap 2nd gen Tundra has the 4.7 V8 too there's also 2wd 4.6s from 2nd gen

Just picked up a 4.7L 05 Tundra AC with 78,000 super clean and super clean title with all service records, traded my 17 Tacoma for this, and I made money off my taco as they gave me 26k for it with 116k on it. Let’s just say that even with all the creature comforts I had in the Tacoma, I don’t miss it! I LOVE this tundra, it’s simplicity and power is no comparison.

@@richarde1355 first off, I absolutely loved and adored the Tacoma, reliable, handsome, fun little truck. I honestly stumbled across the Tundra, got lucky and they (the stealer ship) offered me good money for my Taco. I’m old school, I like simplicity and the first gen tundra just checked all those boxes, column shifter, key to unlock doors and turn the engine over, and the most important thing was the tried and true 4.7L v8, all the power you’ll ever need and then some! That baby roars, it’s a great truck overall, hope that helps!
Just got a 2000 Tundra SR5 AC for my dad and for under $5K with over 200k miles. Currently changing the belts and few other smaller things that need to be done. After driving it I decided that a 20 year old truck ain’t that bad. On the lookout for a 2005-2006 double cab and the algorithm presented me with your vid. Nice job!

I have a red 2005 Tundra with 78,000 miles on it. I bought it in 2009 with 52,000. I drive it twice a month. I know, I’m pitiful!😢
I got my 2002 in 2016 with 120k miles. Still runs like a fine watch. I absolutely love this truck

I got a 2006 Limited Doublecab (cloth seats with no sunroof) for $5200 about a year and a half ago and I love it. The previous owner used and abused it as a baja racer, so I've had to do some front suspension work and a driveshaft replacement. But other than that and a starter and timing belt, I'm absolutely loving it! Definitely a fantastic first vehicle that I plan on keeping for a good long time

Yeah my dad was the original owner, he passed the truck down to me with about 180k miles, he thought I was driving like a maniac because I needed a new radiator, U joints and my brake rotors were warped until I showed him this video, you saved my ass lol

Picked up a 2002 Limited TRD Access Cab about 7 months ago. The friend that I got it from had gotten it for his wife, and had his son who works at a Toyota dealership take it and get it "ready for mom to drive." There's a long list of things that he did including ball joints and timing belt to name a few. I feel like it was a steal at $6500, even with 280k miles. I absolutely love this truck. Just did a full LED lighting conversion and have a couple of other small things on my list. I'm looking forward to many years with this truck.

I’ve only replaced the oxygen sensors, still running the original timing belt. 😮
I bought my blk 04 limited edition 4.7 with 102k in 2011 for $9k and a 2010 5.7 TRD the same year. We liked the 2010 but the 04 has become part of our family and has towed our other vehicles to all three coast and the rest of the country with little or no problems.

I have a 03 AC 4x4 V8. It was purchased new and I’m the 4th person in my family to own it. Did all the maintenance when I got it, as well as new paint, lighting upgrade, CarPlay stereo with new speakers and under-seat woofer, and side pipe exhaust. Runs fantastic and ready for another 215k miles. Love it.

My 05 DC is super comfortable with nice cloth, soft plush fabric seats. No heated seats needed. And this fabric type does not allow for pet hair to stick.
I tow a 4000 lb grooming trailer for work. Tows great.

Recently bought a 2005 2WD Access cab with the 4.0 V6 and 230k miles. Still runs great, no oil leaks or frame rust. Plenty of power for what I need and I am getting 18-19 mpg mixed.
I only buy the Aisin timing belt kit with The Aisin water pump and Koyo bearings and use Toyota Pink Coolant not the red. And i put the bigger 03-06 13wl calipers on my 01 Tacoma. The 13we calipers are the smaller 00-02 calipers that warp. The 4.7L starter is the one pain to replace on that engine under the intake manifold.

Good stuff! Original owner of an ‘04 Tacoma (PreRunner) here but recently bought a ‘98 4Runner 4WD instead of trading in my Taco for a newer vehicle. I’ve always appreciated these Tundras and have started thinking ahead of maybe getting one for one of my kids when they start driving. Appreciate you walking through the history and pros/cons of these. A lot of similar issues on mine (LBJ’s, etc), at least with the 5VZ.
I’ve never seen a manual Tundra and didn’t know they made them in these until you mentioned it. Are there many out there?

I’d say they’re rare. In the year that I’ve been watching the market, I’ve only seen a handful for sale with the manual transmission.
@@208Tyler I really like the 2000-2002 models the best, that front grill and bumper look. Looks like a great overlanding vehicle, too. One thing I’ve always loved about the extended cab Tundras is the ability to open that small door. I have the extended cab Tacoma, and that’s the one thing that was missing when I bought it. I still love it over the regular cab and full size cabs, though.
Ya the “access” cab is a great feature, so is the full bench row! Gives it a leg up over the traditional extended cab
I work in a auto auction. They only offer them with the v6. I've driven quite a few. They're not bad at all and oddly enough seem to have more power than a Tacoma or 4 runner that have the same motor and a 5speed.
Iv found some good used Tundras around 120,000 miles for around 15 grand would you recommend buying them

I had a2003 tundra since 2003 never an issue great truck the best that I had and still now I won’t sell it even if I have a dodge ram but Toyota is the best

does anyone here have V8 Tundra with a LPG maybe Australians here?
i have seen a Tundra V8 in a german car sale website with a LPG system, but i know that the LPG fuel isn't that good with Japanese cars especially with Toyota and Lexus, but what about the V8 Tundra since its more American based
After a quick google search, I only really see listings for 5.7 V8 second gen tundras in Europe.
Hardly anyone has looked at moving to LPG on these trucks. The "universal" or designed LPG kits are more common for GM (chevy, gmc, etc) models.
had the lower ball joint break on me about a month ago, was lucky to be at low speeds in a parking garage. just over 200k miles, repair at the the dealership was $1245 for new ball joints and control arms. still love my truck!

I've been clicking and viewing all this channel has uploaded on the 1st Gen Tundra.
I appreciate all the unique issues on my '03 SR5 and the raesons well explained on the why for said issues exist.
My '03 4.7 has had some of the stated issues and I put my money into getting as much done as I can afford. Now that I'm retired on a fixed income I'm glad to know that so long as I'm willing to keep up on the little things that my Baked Alaska Faux F150 is going to be around for a long while, if not in my two vehicle fleet, someone else will appreciate what I've done in maintenance during my ownership.
Currently I have a O/D switch failure and will personally I will nary need this feature unless I decide to tow a significant load.

I personally wouldn’t get a tundra with the 3.4. Very reliable, but the 4.7 is where it’s at on these trucks, unless you can get a supercharged 3.4
@@208Tyler - Yes, it seems like the 4.7 is definitely the way to go in these first gen Tundras. I’ve also driven the first gen Tacoma in the 3.4 and it did feel peppy but it’s also a lighter truck. I’ve been searching to buy one of these Tundras for awhile now and I found a clean one (not easy to find) but it’s a V6. After reading your response, I think I might hold out for the V8. I appreciate your feedback.
By the way, I have to thank you. I’ve been searching for a first gen Tacoma and was completely set on getting one. But, in the course of my research, I’ve been watching several TH-cam videos and I happened to come across one of yours where you are describing the differences between the Tacoma and the Tundra (first gen). Because of THAT video.. you have persuaded me to go for the Tundra. You made complete sense in explaining the differences between the two trucks and how it was basically nonsensical to go with the much tighter and cramped Tacoma. You were absolutely right. It was like an epiphany for me.. I never saw it that way. So, thanks for helping me and changing my whole perspective! You’re very knowledgeable and have some of the best videos out there on the Tundra. Keep up the great work!

I jut got mine 130k miles for 4 grand
I have an 01 tundra trd off-road with 180k miles. Bought it 5 months ago for 7k. Had to get all new shocks, new alignment, bushings, and brakes, and timing belt. so That set me back to around 10 grand total. There are some engine mods but not a lot. The only ones I’m going to do in the future is a cold air intake and a throttle body spacer. They also make a few dual exhaust kits for these trucks too which look and sound really good.

I don’t *personally* think the engine is worth messing with for a little performance. The exhaust is nice though, I know dirty deeds makes good stuff!
@@208Tyler yeah I am most likely not gonna get a throttle body spacer but my buddies dad used to own a 2003 tundra and had a cold air intake and he told me it gave it a little more power but also made the engine sound a ton better.
Really? My brothers 01 tacoma (different engine I know) has one and the sound is SO annoying. Lol

I have 2002 SR5 with the retro chrome bumper and mirrors, I’ve owned it for 17 years. It came with the leather captin seats and leather bench back seat as well. 😮👍

I own a 4,7 liter 2003 access cab Tundra. I have had it since 2018. really like my truck. The timing belt, new water pump, and belts was $940 at the dealership. I did not want to take a chance on the timing belt breaking.
I got a V-6 ‘03 tundra with 192k miles for 2300 a few months back and it’s amazing. I nicknamed it the fat taco(ma) because it looks like a bigger version of my 2004 Tacoma

Don’t buy a rusty one if you can help it! Occasionally Toyota will still replace the frame if it hasn’t already been done.

Very cool! Neighbor a retired toyota and honeywell engineer, built a lc79 crew cab body from a 2022, onto a tundra donor truck, along with its fold down bed. His engine pooped so he decided to swap a cummins 5.9L and go fully overboard. like his lc79 his champ build had its cab and bed imported from philippines, so is LHD. He used a t100 or a tacoma i think, as the donor for body and bed to drop on. He has a 4.2L from an '06 troopy that hes built out like a mad man for it.

Inherited the 2000 SR5 TRD package tundra from my dad, 234k miles right now I've probably put at least 10k on it. Ive had to pay a lot of money to repair the entire front end, rack and pinion, cv joints ball joints tie rods control arms, suspension, ABS plugs...... basically i've completely replaced everything in the front. It's probably cost me somewhere around 5-6.5k over the last 3 years because I took it to shops instead of doing it myself..
As far as the engine I needed to replace the timing belt, spark plugs, coils, 02 sensors. That being said, it was already 21 (now in 2024 its 24 years old.... holy crap, I'm only 6 years older than this truck!) Its been put regularly to good heavy use. Hauling equipment, trailers and tools all the time, and frequently going to the mountains for camping/fishing.
It's been put through the ringer and it's still ol' reliable. It's never left me stranded even when the spark plugs and coils went bad, it always starts and never overheats in the most extreme heat of the summer with AC on full blast, and it always starts in extreme cold.... It's the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned... This truck hasn't had it easy, it's been tested constantly and pushed to its limits.... its needed some TLC due to being used so heavily, but I wouldn't sell it ever

tundra off of the show room floor. Extra Cab, 4,7 V8, SRS 4WD . $33,000. I bought it, no financing. Here we are 20 years later.
I have an 04. Bought it new. Toyota of Des Moines, Iowa. OEM parts. Microfiches. You find the part you need. Not an Ad. A genuine, OEM part.
But 05 06 way better I have owned both my 06 is the cats meow for rural Nevada roads 240,000 no major issues TRD 4x4

I Like the VVti V6 IS Strong Enough the Only Problem The 6 Speed Manual Was Not Relialable Syncros Failed too Fast. Now Im In The Proccess of yhe Rebuilding The MT and Putting New Head Gasket on thr V6
Great review. I own a 2005 Sequoia, and love the drive train. I was wondering what years run the small disks vs the later models. (Assuming it’s 2005-2006 with better brakes?) I’d also love to know if TRD wheels fit without spacers, but I can do some research. I currently also own a 2013 Tacoma, semi- built, but totally agree that I would like slightly more room and torque. 👍🏽
The 00-02 have small calipers, I want to say that starting in 04 you get bigger brakes. You can use rockauto to cross reference parts. The 13WE are smaller, and the 13WL are larger on the Tundra

I got a 03 AC TRD off road for my first truck. The place we got it from has a modified exhaust and a leveler kit. I haven’t done anything to it and it looks dope. Even tho my mom put a dent in the rear bumper the first time she drove it.

Good overview. I just got a one owner, well maintained 2005 w 106 k mi . Im in Ca and would like a 4wd but don't need it. Im going backward after owning a 2013 that was totaled at a red light by a texting mommy. I'm loving this engine, hating the turning radius (crazy), getting adjusted to the smaller cab. Mileage is great compared to the 2013. Need to overhaul struts, suspension. Like your "camper". Used to live in Sandpoint, watch out for moose.

Great video! I have a 2003 Tundra Access Cab. Recently replaced the timing belt, and had the front end rebuilt. Once done and new tires, it is great fun to drive. Very quick!

My elderly neighbor is selling his 2004 2WD Double Cab with 71,000 miles. It’s always in the garage. I offered him $15k but he’s firm on $16k. Everything is original including the timing belt. It drives better than a new Tacoma. Should I buy it ?
Personally, that’s not a truck I’d really go for, I would want 4WD.
If you’re looking at a daily/hauling truck, that’s not a terrible deal, especially if you need the double cab.
You might be able to find a 2nd Gen tundra in that price range though, people are starting to price gouge on these 1st gens
@@208Tyler You are right, I spoke with my Toyota mechanic and he said it was priced too high especially for the lack of scheduled maintenance. He said I was looking at possibly $2k in scheduled maintenance repairs. He advised since the seller is firm on his $16k price to walk away unless he drops the price to $10k range

Sounds crazy but it's almost worth it, almost. You can find a better deal with perhaps more mileage but timing belt and other stuff done. If its body, is in great shape and maintenance was done... maybe 14

About a year ago to the date i bought a 2005 acess cab tundra sr5 TRD STEPSIDE. I thought it looked weird at 1st but comparing to "regular" models and the fact that there are so few out there, its grown on me. Bucket seats up front. Didnt know about the oem balljoints......just recently replaced all 4 with moog, and moog tie rod end links. Also just installed a fully aluminum "alloy works" radiator, and 2018 tacoma 17" rims and rear wheel spacers. Ohh and it has 114k on the tach

My dad bought a 02 tundra new and we absolutely love it. I was just starting high school. It was the first brand new vehicle we ever bought and our first V8. It has 156k on it which is not much but we have abused it in that mileage.
We recently had to replace the timing belt again. It kept skipping 2 teeth and we were super fortunate to have nothing happen to the motor. This time did the job myself with the Aisin kit. My pops helped and had the supervision and help of my best friend which is a ASE certified master tech. Motor still runs silky smooth.
Repainted the original color 2 years ago. The shift shaft sub assembly broke so that still needs to be replaced but we can still drive it. I agree with the brakes on this truck. If you are aware and drive accordingly you'll be fine.

Good video, thanks. My 03 6 cylinder Tacoma has a timing chain, not a belt. Does the V8 really use a belt?
The 2UZ FE uses a timing belt. I believe the 5VZ also used a belt but is non interference
I have 187k on my 2006 AC cab. My biggest complaint is turning radius. But also it seems the steering is touchy like I have to keep correcting. Running Yokohama tires that to me seem too soft on the sidewalls, which might be causing it? Tried some toyos and they were worse. Suspension seems kind of floaty to me Not sure if new shocks would help any of this? I’m pretty sure the stock are still on there. I’m the second owner. What replacement shocks would be a stiffer, more stable ride? Overall a great truck on power and reliability. It seems crazy but I’d love this truck lowered some. I think the handling would be so much better and seem less top heavy. Not sure there is much in the aftermarket world to so that in an affordable way?
It’s a 20 year old truck. Not gonna handle great from the start.
If you’re looking for stock stuff, just order off rock auto. Otherwise I’ve had good luck with 5100’s for a lift.

I can't seem to find box sideds for my 2000 . I live in Mi so yah mine are kind of shot . Do u have any idea we're to look . I've looked online and maybe I'm looking in the wrong place please help lol .

Very nice presentation. I did not hear what the largest size tires the various years of Tundra can take. Tires that would increase ground clearance, yet would still fit in the space of the spare tire and would not rub when the wheels were at maximum turn.
That’s a tough list to assemble given the different wheels and discrepancies between model years

Ball joints are a regular maintenance item on every vehicle that uses ball joints.

It depends on your preferences, but there's alot to like about the 04-06 trucks. They have more potential issues, but more power and an extra speed in the transmission.

The tundra is so nice. And the taco is such an unbelievable POS it’s hard for me to understand that not only are they from the same manufacturer but one is looked down on and one is treated like the greatest thing of all time.

I hope I didn’t say that. I’m pretty sure that I just pointed out that the 03-06 limited AC tundras are the nicest access cabs- they get the paint matched bumpers, nice front end and flairs. You can get a limited on any model year as far as I know.
