when i see these vehicles all i can picture are 3 trucks with 3 holes in their gas tanks leaking gas all over the ground. You are literally pissing money away them sitting overnight after you spent money filling em. The fact these vehicles dont keep all the energy you spent money on to fill them up to begin with is assinine. EV is a total scam!
@@mattwill63 My Model Y gets 320 miles charging at home and cost $15 of electricity. New technology is scary for some people, but NOT so scary that it’s a “scam.” Bike was scary for some people when first introduced.
Hummer EV owner here. The Lightning is the best traditional truck you can get. I only didn't go for it because I'm trying something new and didn't want to go traditional this time.
It would be really neat to see like a 300-500 mile road trip to some national park all done by the 3 trucks like in a caravan and then see what the charging infrastructure, amount of electricity, cost and charging times were all like. Rivian cybertruck and ford f-150 lightning
Once the Cybertruck gets into the hands of a real owners (not owners/reviewers that Tesla can count on to provide a positive review), we will see those types of comparison tests.
National Parks only have level 2 charging within their boundaries. You can use a lot of power driving around the parks and not have enough to get you back out unless you charge these huge battery packs for hours.
Only missing from this comparison is GMC Hummer Pick-up, that one has some cool extra features like : individual removable glass roof panels, crab-walk and ability to rock-crawl..
This was really insightful. While I still love the Cybertruck for its innovative design, manufacturing and tech, it’s surprisingly not ahead on either range, storage, charging, toeing power or practicality. That’s a bit of a bummer, especially given that it came out a few years after the others…
The 48 volt architecture, steer by wire and 4 wheel steering seem like cool innovations. The stainless steel exoskeleton and general weirdness seems unnecessary to me. I don’t quite see where a $80,000 - $120,000 vehicle fit’s into the company mission. I agree it doesn’t beat the competition on the most practical features.
The Hummer EV is by far the best looking. I thought the cyberdork was supposed to be a tank but it looks smaller then most suvs on the road. Look up custom hummer ev. Those things are so sexy and are actually tanks on the road. The cyberdork just screams elon is my daddy. I'd be embarrassed to drive it.
I'm a musk hater but I'll equally call out the hummer ev for also being stupid and overpriced. At least GM makes a WT and a version later that will tow 20k pounds.
My Lightning and Rivian orders came within a month of each other (Rivian first). My previous truck was a Lariat F-150, which I loved. If I was looking for a work vehicle or had to seat 5 people comfortably, I’d have gone with the Lightning. But I’m mostly an off-roader with 4 seats needed, and the R1T was the direct design for that. It’s like a larger version of the offroad lifted Tacoma I had, but much better daily driver. Both of these EV vehicles are great. Some of the differences are a bit more nuanced than folks tend to describe. I am finding the Rivian hauls anything I need (plywood, mulch, etc.) and the Lightning seemed like a better offroad vehicle than my Lariat was. If I was a construction contractor I’d go with the Lightning. Since I’m a hydrologist working a lot in wilderness, I went with the Rivian. But either can work for both of those types of owners. No comment on the Cybertruck. My wife vetoed it based on aesthetics. Regarding charging networks, yes Tesla is the best. But I haven’t had any major issues road-tripping the Rivian - been across 6 southern states with it so far and just ran a 1500 mile circuit through FL in 4 days for a series of business trips away from home without any problems. So, I think that’s also a nuanced difference. Just get the vehicle that feels best for you. For me, it’s the R1T.
Nice job getting through this. I wish you had pointed out the gear tunnel on the Rivian and the custom kitchen you can buy that slides in and out of it. Really highlights the "lifestyle" aspect of the brand. Great job again, and thanks for all you do.
Rivian deleted the kitchen from their gear shop last year. You can google it and a link to the kitchen will pop up, but when you click on the link you’ll fin there is no kitchen in the shop. The gear tunnel is still super cool, but not as cool as it would have been with the kitchen.
The slide out Kitchen was a neat gimmick, but I doubt too many buyers taken it and it was expensive to procure. Rivian desperately needs to show a profit for investors, so no wonder that option has been deleted for MY2024.
Cybertruck is the worst at everything except the gimmicks: worst charging performance, worst range, worst road noise, worst suspension comfort, worst driver assistance, and worst offroading, worse in terms of sensors but the most expensive. The only advantage would be that it is semi-bulletproof
Absolutely agree. It was an ommision I can forgive though, as most enthusiasts are already familiar with that niche feature. I personally love it. Rivian made a fantastic truck and it would definitely be my choice from the 3.
Have had my lighting Lariat for over a year. Still love it every day I get in! Charge at home and have never had an issue. Putting my tools in the frunk is fantastic.
Great video. My takeaway is that each truck has pros and cons so everyone should choose based on their individual use case. Whatever works for you is the best truck. Isn’t that all that really matters? No reason to bash ones you don’t like.
I just purchased the Lighting XLT. While I like the traditional look, it was my only choice. The other 2 are simply out of my price range. Having said that, I love this truck
The front of the cybertruck looks cool....but the continuation of that boxy look in the rear makes it too odd and elongated looking.... they should have did some slight rounding in the back and made it a bit shorter in the back as well.
We just hit a year with our Lightning. Almost hit it with it in the shop due to a 33 day battery, lightbar, and steering wheel upgrade/recall repair(we had no apparent range, battery, or lightbar issues). Hopefully, this will be it for awhile. Form factor for us, it's the best. We'll be working on an overland upgrade to it, and an overland trailer with about 3kW of panels, and 20kW of batteries, so with good sun, we'll be able to put probably 40 miles per day into it.
I hope it works out for you. I’m at 38k miles in my Lightning and has been nothing but a pleasure driving it. So much so I ended up canceling my CT Reservation. The interior on the CT is such a bummmer
It's the most "old school" of the three, but it has an actual spare tire and a place for it, bed caps/ toppers are available, and it has the great frunk. So of the three, it does far more of what a truck is really for, IMHO. (Wish it had a full 6 foot bed.) Once it can easily charge with NACS on the Tesla network, it surprises me to say, first choice of the three.
Got the F150 Lariat during the price drop best value for functions and pricing out of those 3. Big Frunk and biggest cab space. 70k with for the Lariat Extended battery before tax rebate.
We did the same exact truck, same pricing. Got it late November. We live in New Hampshire, so also the benefit of no sales tax. And it’ll get the $7500 tax credit. Our electric coop also sends you a $1000 check when you buy an EV, so that didn’t hurt either.
Nice Vid! Rivian is just a thing of beauty. It will never go out of style. Elegant but patagonian. The material, paint job, the finshes, inside and out are hands down second to none. I have 2 teslas. Cheap ass materials inside. I wouldn't get another one. Future Rivian owner here for sure.
I'm more Ford F150 Lightning. I like that it looks the same as the ICE version. It's bigger than the other two. I currently have a Tesla Model 3, and need a truck to add so when the 2025 with NACS comes out, I think I'll be happy with the Lightning. Great vid!
Frustrating since this was the one video I was most excited for and got so little attention. We got hours of deep Cybertruck nerd content which I'm fine with, but this was the one we actually needed to go deep on!
I bought my first F-150 XLT 2021 last year, I enjoyed my truck every time I drove it, my wife 4’5” tall drives my truck with no problem. I mentioned her that I would trade in my current truck for lighting and states that she would keep my current truck then I could get the lighting. Coming from my wife who is very picky and be happy driving the f-150 and Ovell all driving from Highland CA to San Francisco with no problem and is super comfortable, hands down get me a Ford lighting. Yeah, I agree the Cybertruck is a beauty however the f-150 is more practical and overall more family-friendly. U don't even count the Rivian witch also a beauty but it is not worth it.
It's nice that each of these trucks are awesome in different ways. You really did an outstanding job of zooming through this comparison. It's definitely much more interesting than the typical ICE Ford vs GM vs Ram and Toyota.
Thanks for the side by side. To me the ford looks like the most practical for my family. The frunk is excellent and would be a good compromise if your spouse argues with you about storage if you never had a pickup truck before. Also, the spare tire is good
"No one really uses 14-30R..." Well, I use it to run a generator cable to my house, to a transfer switch, to power my boiler, well water, fridge and some.other lights and things when the power is out. VERY useful.
Great quick review, though some pretty important Cybertruck specs for off-road use would have been useful such as: - 17” ground clearance - 8” air suspension adjustment range - 1.8mm thick hardened stainless steel scratch-resistant, dent-resistant, rust-resistant, bullet-resistant body - 35” tires - monstrous torque for rock-crawling with load - monstrous acceleration for over-taking with load - 4-wheel steering for small turning circle and off-road - upcoming potential boat-mode for amphibious capability - range-extender drop-in battery
@@TheBCninja I’m not sure which of those features you would class as marketing jargon rather than features or specs? Which do you reckon would not be useful features for off-roaders to know exactly?
you forgot to mention the gear tunnel in the r1t. Love this video though! Been trying to figure what truck works best for me. They really all have a variety of different features they offer.
Thank you so much for the brevity. I wish all your videos were this format. Excellent review. You presented the facts without drama and an overload of negativity and criticism. I definitely prefer this style of video.
Also of note, Lightnings are now coming with a 14-50 adapter for the 14-30R plug, but you have to either use something with a max 30A draw, or back down the draw on the device to 30a. When ordered, the mobile charger on the Lightning is 30A (as opposed to the 32A MPC that comes with Mach E) to accommodate EV charging off that adapter.
I love my lightning, my best car/truck even, the utility and comfort are WOW, I had 2 model S before (huge bug with motor noise) and I dont use my second car Model 3 AWD any more.
Excellent video. I own the R1S but this particular video has been so anticipated for yrs and so congrats getting it out the door so early. Well done covering a LOT in a tight timeframe. Still madly in love w my Rivian but see some solid features in the others.
If I had to choose it would be the Cybertruck Long Range (which is not discussed in this video) to come out this year. The Beast Mode version has insane specs performance wise, but for road tripping and general use, the Long Range makes the most sense.
Here's some food for thought. Ford brought the Lightning to market nearly two years ago. Despite all the advances since then, it is still a very serviceable vehicle. The ground-up-design Lighting with better range, better towing capability and better upgradeability is set to begin production in late 2025. What do you think Ford will do with the experience and technical advancements between now and then?
Great videos and great team work all this week. I’ll say it depends on when you buy the truck and if it’s going to be your only vehicle. At this point in time the Tesla charging network is the best and the Ford and Rivian can’t really use it, in the future yes I will consider other brands but right now CT is the best option if you road trip and you want a truck.
There were many details that were very interesting, and seemed honest. I also think that it was fine and honest to say that he likes the Rivian best as his all round car, even though he had some criticisms to make of it. But it was like there was a block or a wall, preventing him from allowing himself to like the cyber truck more than his Rivian. a few times he sounded like he was making a criticism of the cyber drop but then said oh no this is actually the same or better. He also praised the cyber truck and it seemed like he really liked the interior and the space in the cyber truck. There seemed to be an excitement in his voice when he was talking about individual things about the cyber truck, but it was like even though he kept on saying the cyber truck is better in this way, I’m better in that way it has more space and has more room and more people etc. etc. he always seemed to hit that wall. Also a lot of criticisms that he had that were quite valid are going to be fixed or improved with software updates like the 350 max charging rate, and, the self driving software. He said he liked the cyber truck better for highway driving although it was a bit noisy which could be understandable as a downside. The cyber truck also has options to get bigger batteries which would put it above the others. Now I agree that there is an appeal to the Rivian looks that the cyber truck doesn’t have and that the looks are so different it’s hard to compare them. The Rivian has a soft more sophisticated exterior and the interior is more traditional, more in the style of luxury cars today. The cyber truck is very minimalist and clean and futuristic, which is hard to compare to, but looks great with the visibility in the sunroof. So overall, I think he was trying to be very honest, and while in someways, I wanted to criticize him the biggest criticism is it seems like he wasn’t open to let himself like the cyber truck more even though he kept on saying over and over in almost every metric that the cyber truck had more room and had an amazing tunnel cover and the drivetrain and the powertrain were better and the 220 V battery and the faster charging for the first part of the charge cycle, he just went into so many different areas and he would start to say the other truck was better, but then said oh no cyber truck better so it just seems like he hit a wall. Now he owns a Rivian so you don’t feel bad about an expensive purchase that you made for yourself and I don’t think he has a reason to feel bad about it because it’s a preference thing and from the outside of the Rivian looks pretty cool. but the cyber truck and Rivian are so different. You could own both of them and like them for different reasons. I think one of the main considerations will be how these vehicles age. Will the cyber truck get better with age and updates and will the parts of each of these trucks last? How long will these trucks have to spend in repairs and going back to the dealership for recalls, etc. but overall I appreciate this video
You got it wrong. He went out of his way to minimize cybertruck's many downsides and issues. I got the impression he was concerned with blowback from a large portion of his viewership that have drunk the koolaid.
I’d get the F-150. If you have body and sensor damage to the Rivian or CT. Good luck getting your vehicle fixed in a reasonable timeframe and at a reasonable cost.
I was a day 1 order & I've owned my Lightning for 18 months now. -Its my daily driver -I love it -Its not for everyone -It feels and looks like a normal truck I'm 100% satisfied & I don't know that I can go back to a gas powered vehicle
For towing range extending trailers are the way to go. Put the extra battery weight and a drive motor in the trailer. I've got a CT res but if I pass on foundation I'll be able to see what Ford does with T3.
@@G82Watts bro STFU no one cares. I've seen 6 comments from you complaining about the size of these trucks. I know your wife is disappointed with your size so you have to make it up with a truck, but that's not what every one else's priority is
When we bought our Lightning, it felt large. But we also drive a 21’ ProMaster-based Camper Van, so we’re used to the size. The camera setup is fantastic, especially the 360 degree view, which our Model Y lacks. My favorite is a camera right on the Ford badge on the front, so you can see how close you’re getting to a snow bank.
A very insightful episode for me. As usual, Kyle did a great job breaking down his thoughts on the three trucks but to me he highlighted something else. The reason why truck design has basically been the same for decades is because it is a good design. The Ford Lightning is probably the best version of what a truck can be. Tesla’s Cybertruck is awesome but its design is a bit of a compromise. Not a lot of compromise and it does fulfil the need to look radically different from other trucks but for a truck it could have more headspace in the back, better view behind and a bigger frunk. The Cybertruck probably needs more advanced batteries, should be in the works, to pull ahead in terms of range and of course there is the FSD future that will certainly make it highly desirable.
We have a Ford XLT which has become our daily driver. Been great, though Ford needs to work on their software and accessory/parts support. They say "dealers are our eyes and ears" but 4/5 "local" dealers don't do parts or accessory warranty returns. They literally told Ford support 'no' over the phone 😡
Never thought I’d say this but for me I’d have the Cybertruck last out of the bunch. I love the look of the Rivian, yes it’s a little too small but it’s a good compromise. The F150 I probably respect the most for being so darn good and useful yet you don’t have to shout about it. The Cybertruck for me is for people who are bought in to the Tesla dream or get FOMO a lot or frankly extroverts. I think Tesla could have built a much better truck if it had just built a Tesla truck and not a cyber truck if you get me but it’s still cool and quirky, but a hard no thanks for me
Based on looks alone, it would be the Rivian or Lightning for me. If it came down to one choice it would be the Lightning based on brand recognition alone. Not taking anything from the Rivian. The Cybertruck is not only ugly but it's useless as a pickup as anything I can think of.
Hey Kyle, when the F150 lightning first came out, you hooked up seven different vehicles to that truck. I have not seen a video of you doing that with the cyber truck yet.
This was a wonderful succinct video! Thank you! I'm the future EV customer who needs a truck. I have been looking between these 3. I like the Ford a lot
Great video Kyle! So much knowledge of these vehicles allow you to speed up the pace wow impressive. I think best shot is the F150 unless their software is not that great. Maybe next video should be comparing technology. Panel accessibility
Air suspension isn't fixing that departure angle..and definitely not saving whatever that big (plastic, I'm sure) chunk is from getting smashed or ripped off.
One thing not talked about, is the Tesla supercharger network, which at the moment is the best and most reliable charging network out there. I would be confident driving cross country with a Tesla and finding properly functioning chargers. Compared to have to rely on chargers, that many EV owners find, the chargers are not working.
Yes, an issue and a consideration. We have a Model Y in addition to the Lightning. In 2023, I think we used the Superchargers 6 times in the entire calendar year, with two trips being 4 hour trips to address family emergency matters. But given Ford and Tesla have said we will have access to the Superchargers in February of this year, we’re not all that concerned. Our use case doesn’t normally require much DC charging anyway, but having an adapter to use the Superchargers will further eliminate concerns.
The best part about the Lightning is the software is secondary to the truck, meaning, you don’t need the software to drive it. There are no fart sounds or gimmicks. Just a Truck with a Battery.
That's actually a disadvantage to legacy auto. You have one company making powertrain then another on infotainment and another on hvac etc. So many modules made from different manufacturers makes it way less seamless and reliable than building hardware and software together.
@@Shiftheads so far so good with the Lightning. People confuse software, true software that runs all those modules to the gimmicks in the entertainment system. When people say “Tesla has the best software” and you ask them why, they immediately start talking about the entertainment options or how you have to go through two screens to open the glove box. As far as the EV software itself, the Lightning is probably better than Tesla, I own a Model 3 and the Lightning is far better drive wise.
@@lrod8692 I'm not talking about entertainment stuff though. I'm talking about everything from ui of their app to their throttle mapping, bms, inverter package. To open the glove box you literally just push the button on the steering wheel and say open the glove box lol.
@@Shiftheads yeah and the Lightning is right on par or better than Tesla. I own both of them so have direct comparison. Even AP is subpar to BC. I cant say anything about FSD because I dont have it but will eventually subscribe for a month to compare. This false narrative that Tesla is superior is just not true, and the CT is really proof of it. It's mid pack at best.
@@lrod8692 I'm not saying Ford is worse or tesla is better I'm saying legacy auto companies are going to have a hard time going full EV when they have all these suppliers. One for belts and hoses, one for engines, ones for abs modules etc. They are huge ships that can't move and can't manufacture. Why do you think they all just announced they investing less in electric vehicles? They can't compete with the costs to manufacture. I think the lightning is great. I love that there are options.
I am interested to see what the electric pickup options/specs will be in 5 - 10 years. The batteries should be way better by then and hopefully chargers will be much faster as well. I feel like I'd want around 600mi real-world range in a pickup, which should be totally doable in 10 years without increasing the battery weight at all. Right now the CT seems the most practical to me. It's a paradigm shift to have a pickup that has the maneuverability and acceleration of a sports car, yet with 16"+ of clearance, and you can bash it all day with a sledgehammer and do no damage. Spacious cab and bed to boot. I'm imagining being able to hide a winch in the frunk with a cutout in the hood for the rollers, and gear boxes on either side of the winch for your towing/winching gear. Your winch and cables would all be kept nice and dry in there, and it wouldn't change the aerodynamics or approach angle.
Great review. I've driven both the R1T and the Lightning but not the Cybertruck. I agree wholeheartedly that the Lighting is a traditional truck, and a very nice one might I add. The one I drove had incredible power. The display's speedometer numbers went from 0-60 in no time. That Lighting is a truck I would've bought if I could've gotten its price closer to $50K for the extended range battery pack. The Rivian was a nice truck. Very luxurious feeling (gave me a Land Rover vibe) and very powerful as well. However, the Rivian left me feeling "I'm not ready for the future". I wanted to unlock its doors but there's no power lock switch, so I had to roll down its window for someone to reach in and pull the inside handle to open a back door. You have to go to a menu to move its power tilt steering wheel. You have to go into a menu to adjust the dash vents from blowing in your face. The brakes auto-apply as soon as you let off the accelerator and there's no way to disable that. Those are things I never see in any Rivian reviews, but I wonder if people just get used to these (what I would call) shortcomings and don't mind them. Mind you, I've only had 10+ year old vehicles until I bought my Bronco so I'm used to traditional controls in vehicles and just have to get used to future stuff. I did appreciate this comparison review, thank you.
When you say the brakes auto apply do you mean the regen? Is so, that's literally one of the best parts of driving an EV. ONCE you get used to it, it's annoying to drive an ICE again. How often do you adjust the steering wheel? I've set mine once and never touched it again. Can save in profiles for the wifey.
If I had to pick, it’s definitely the Rivian for just what it is, it’s got the looks, size, range and support. The Lightning is more practical but the Rivian’s “outdoor lifestyle” looks are more appealing. Honestly tho, I wouldn’t pick any of them, I’d pick up the F-150 Hybrid and get the best of both worlds with “electric on site” and all the practicality you get with F-150s, plus Blue Cruise 😇 The cybertrucks are ridiculous and they look ridiculous in person lol, sorry guys
I wish you would have lined up the rear of the trucks for the video. You talk about how much bigger the F150 is, and when you mention it, it certainly looks a lot larger based on the way the trucks are positioned. Then at 11:04 as you walk around the back, you see the Ford is parked much farther forward than the other two trucks. it makes the comparison harder to gauge honestly for oneself.
One other competition is updates…Ford almost never does updates.. Tesla will for sure have updates.. but Rivian seems king right now in this category.. makes the truck exciting and like a new toy to play with every couple months.
FSD has not improved in our experience. It reads stop signs on adjoining roads that are not perfectly 90 degrees to the one we’re on, and slams on the brakes. And Tesla’s software updates over the last several months broke the automatic wipers that they’d finally dialed in, and now run when it’s not raining and don’t always when it is.
The outlet thing I honestly don't agree if you have ever run of a generator on a construction or event site the twist lock is way more common. Ford did there homework there.
Outstanding work to you and your great team. Your ability to condense a lot of very useful information and communicate it is very good. Comprehensive reviews. You worked with what you had but would have liked to have seen the lightning in all of the videos. Great description of the features, use cases and what would make someone choose each one. Only major ommission that is a buying factor and reality is the choice of stainless steel for the exoskeleton unlike all other trucks really. Great reviews and would eventually like to see comparisons to Hybrid offerings, large EV SUVs that do overlap, and all new EV trucks coming. Great job, safe trip back, look forward to more.
Hey, my Rivian power tonneau still works! Humorously, it stuck while closing the very first time I opened it while the delivery person was still at my house; I saw the problem (one of the slats had "fallen" so wasn't riding on top of the prior one like it should,) and fixed it, have just watched it when the last couple slats go in ever since, and it's been flawless.
Mine still works fine also , and I have a early VIN. Trick is to make sure those slats overlap over one another like roof shingles or vinyl siding. Check it every time you close it and before you open it. If you notice they are level gentle smack it to make it overlap. It is when they are level to one another and the motor is activated that the torque will pop it out of the track
As a Rivian owner, I use my front trunk all the time, it fits two carry one and a couple little items, with the lid floor in. You’d really have to be soft to not be able to lift items into it. F150 Frunk looks great, Cybertruck looks like stuff will fall out. Cybertruck looks smaller in the back of the cab than the Rivian, contrary to the commentary, have to see one in person to know I guess.
The rating should which one will people buy and use as an actual truck. I say the Lighting followed by the Rivian and last is the Cyber truck. The lightning is obvious, but the Rivian will mostly be used as a daily while sometimes used as a truck to pick up something that won’t fit in a car. It will also be used as a truck for camping more I feel. Is the cyber truck also capable just like the Rivian? Yes. The problem is that most people who are buying that is for the polarizing looks and attention.
Fords have been making trucks a long time that would be an easy pick especially for somebody who wants to do off-road hard driving the Cyber truck is too new and it's going to have a lot of bugs to work out
We bought an F150 Lightning Lariat ER. We’d had a chance to drive a friend’s R1T, and liked it, but Rivian suffers from the same issue as we already face with our Tesla Model Y: no service availability. The nearest Rivian service is in a Boston suburb. That’s 3+ hours away. The nearest Tesla service stations are in Boston suburbs and an Albany, NY suburb. All 3 hours away. Our Ford dealer is 16 minutes from the house, and they’ll come pick up the truck, provide service, and return it. That was a selling point in going to look at the Lightning. What we’ve discovered since buying it is we LOVE driving it. BlueCruise is more comfortable to drive than Tesla’s FSD. It does less, but what it does, it does SO well. We road tripped it this past week to a family property a few hours away, charged it there, and drove back home. We had the bed filled with tools, chainsaw (just in case) and supplies needed at the cabin. Oh, and a powered cooler in the bed, plugged in to ProPower for the trip down and back. The Frunk held a 7 gallon fresh water carrier (water systems are shut down in the cabin for the winter), plus clothing and bedding. Back seats folded up, with our musical instruments and some food stuff in the spacious area there. Our truck arrived with an adapter that goes into the twist-lock 240v outlet and adapts to L14-50R. BTW, that twist lock 240v is what is on portable generators that handle 240v, so it actually does make sense if you’re connecting to a temporary generator port on a house, as that’s the cable style used, not L14-50. The Lightning is incredibly quiet on the road. Our Model Y is loud with road noise. Comfort-wise, the Lightning is far beyond our Model Y. And yes, having a truck that’s a truck is great where we live, dealing with dirt roads and driving on the hay fields and such. We live in an area where full size pickups are common, and where people turn their noses up at EVs. Lots of folks don’t even realize our truck is electric except that it’s so quiet. The Model Y is going to get sold in the near future.
Why? You want to move a truck around a site? 4 wheel steer. Visibilty? Nice low front. You want a REALLY secure, large storage area? You want a longer bed? You want ground clearance? . "But the side access"? How about a bed slide-out? Then, any access issues disappear. . Just sayin'
NEMA L14-30R is a pretty common generator outlet, even on 9500 watt generators. Since Ford’s ProPower is intended to replace job-site genes, it makes sense why they went with that outlet.
I got the invite to order my Cybertruck but I think my Rivian R1T fits my needs better. Here’s why: I love the new design of the CT but feel like the R1T is more functional. Things my R1T has that CT doesn’t: 1. Gear tunnel - I can’t believe how much use out of this I get (not just the storage but standing on door to reach racks/sitting on door to put wetsuit etc. 2. Bed camera - I have become reliant on this when towing/stuff in the bed 3. Screen behind steering wheel. I can do things like look at bed camera on big screen and look at nav on driver screen. 4. Generally nicer interior. I’ve sat in both and although Tesla is clean it’s nowhere near as lux as rivian.
R1T overall has more net cargo capacity, and generally easier to live with on a daily basis or as a driver cuz it's not too big and about the right size for a reason
You really want the Ford. You will use the frunk more than the tunnel better access. lightning has so much more interior space. Has bed camera, screen behind steering wheel, quieter, more luxurious ride.
Great review of three great electric trucks. ..... Everybody's saying how they love how the R1T looks now, but I remember how polarizing the front headlights were. Now they seem normal. Wonder if everyone will get use to the looks of the Cybertruck? As for who has the charging advantage, I would say the Cybertruck, because it has full access to the reliable Supercharging network.
@@TiffanyJackson-h1z Not all of them. Not the V2s. And there are a lot of V2s in important places on the road. Plus, from what I've seen, Rivians get a max of 131 kW charging on Superchargers. Hopefully that will change.
Size and price wise, I still think a Ford Ranger sized EV is due on market. I remain optimistic, Fisker can deliver their Alaska truck to fill that void. Although, i doubt it will be that much smaller than the Rivian. Perhaps just a smidge smaller, but with a much more versatile bed. Can't wait to see what 2025 holds for EV trucks😃
Which truck would you go for? Comment below!
Also - Don't worry! We cleaned up the parking lot from all of the crush test stuff.
Rivian 💪
Want to see a Cyber Truck properly tested off road using the correct settings etc
when i see these vehicles all i can picture are 3 trucks with 3 holes in their gas tanks leaking gas all over the ground. You are literally pissing money away them sitting overnight after you spent money filling em. The fact these vehicles dont keep all the energy you spent money on to fill them up to begin with is assinine. EV is a total scam!
Rivian
@@mattwill63 My Model Y gets 320 miles charging at home and cost $15 of electricity. New technology is scary for some people, but NOT so scary that it’s a “scam.” Bike was scary for some people when first introduced.
Kyle has the gift of gab. This wasn't a 2 hour video edited for 20 mins. It's a straight shoot. Nice work!
Haha sometimes too much. We all know he can easily talk about a paper clip and make a 1-hour video out of it. 😂
Except it's only a form and features review, not a full review with driving and other points of interest.
Finally an honest review giving the lightning the credit it deserves!
rivian owner here. the lightning is an awesome vehicle and deserves the credit.
@@michaelsmith6744 So is the Rivian, both excellent vehicles.
Hummer EV owner here. The Lightning is the best traditional truck you can get. I only didn't go for it because I'm trying something new and didn't want to go traditional this time.
I took my Lightning for a drive today in zero degree temps with snow and it performed flawlessly. Electric cabin heat is the best!
I want a MachE
@@CamGaylorI've had both, the Lightning is a better vehicle all the way around.

@@multivisao I also have a Tesla and it’s about the same but unless you’re driving an extended distance it isn’t an issue.
Electric heaters are so overlooked! Heats up immediately
Just your enthusiasm alone makes this a great video! Thanks for being so fair and honest!
Giving you an oscar for this amazing one-take performance!!
Only missing from this comparison is GMC Hummer Pick-up, that one has some cool extra features like :
individual removable glass roof panels, crab-walk and ability to rock-crawl..
The Rivian is just so good looking.
the interior is on par with f150 lariat, gorgeous
Except for those dorky out of place looking headlights.... they look like Marvin the Martian eyes... :)
@@barrya.6212 I would have preferred the headlights being mounted horizontally.
@@barrya.6212 I agree with you guys, the vertical headlights look terrible. Also not a fan of hood ornaments / emblems. Reminds me of the 80s.
This was really insightful. While I still love the Cybertruck for its innovative design, manufacturing and tech, it’s surprisingly not ahead on either range, storage, charging, toeing power or practicality. That’s a bit of a bummer, especially given that it came out a few years after the others…
I personally think it is ahead on all of those for my use cases, but it depends a lot on user.
tesla took them 4 -5 years to finally come to production and range is weaker..lol..Tesla is pathetic
Great review of three amazing trucks. I much prefer these faster / shorter videos.
That's an "Oops" moment then?
FRUNK ....love it.... our new term to use...
18:45 - It has the 14-30R because when using power tools in the field, you want the locking plug.
One more thing worthy of mention on the Rivian, it has a storage compartment which runs from one side of the truck to the other.
Great video. My takeaway is that each truck has pros and cons so everyone should choose based on their individual use case. Whatever works for you is the best truck. Isn’t that all that really matters? No reason to bash ones you don’t like.
Do shut up.
Also worth noting that getting anything out of the Cybertrucks bed from the side is a major pain unless you’re 6’2 or taller.
I just purchased the Lighting XLT. While I like the traditional look, it was my only choice. The other 2 are simply out of my price range. Having said that, I love this truck
Great choice. I will be looking at a Lightning very soon as well.
@@lrod8692we have a 22 King ranch and are so dissapointed by the interior… it feels so cheap and creaky
@@Bb-br3xg then you won’t be happy with the Model 3 interior in the CT
What can you tow and for how long?
It's the most "old school" of the three, but it has an actual spare tire and a place for it, bed caps/ toppers are available, and it has the great frunk. So of the three, it does far more of what a truck is really for, IMHO. (Wish it had a full 6 foot bed.) Once it can easily charge with NACS on the Tesla network, it surprises me to say, first choice of the three.
The 14-30 is more like the gas generator that the Ford Pro Power system is designed to replace, so I think it is a better fit for the design use case.
I like the lighting the best. Beautiful non flashy meat and potato TRUCK!!
ford and i think this is one of the best videos you've done.enjoyed the fast pace, no nonsense, approach.
I'm a Tesla owner, but the Ford F-150 Lightning is a helluva truck. I got to test drive one and I was impressed.
Have you driven the Cybertruck? Elon says it’s Tesla’s best production vehicle
Rivian for me too!
Would you care to say where you got it from? I’m looking for this price / deal now.
It was from autonation
Love my lightning, had it for a year, works amazing!
I'm more Ford F150 Lightning. I like that it looks the same as the ICE version. It's bigger than the other two. I currently have a Tesla Model 3, and need a truck to add so when the 2025 with NACS comes out, I think I'll be happy with the Lightning. Great vid!
Ignored the Rivian's gear tunnel when comparing the storage across the models.
It was obviously a rushed video
Frustrating since this was the one video I was most excited for and got so little attention. We got hours of deep Cybertruck nerd content which I'm fine with, but this was the one we actually needed to go deep on!
Nope its a big win over the two others
That doesn't look like a 14-30 to me. Pretty sure it was a locking receptacle, probably a L26-30
@@csf1757 It's an L14-30R. Round, lockable, yes. 👍
Great quick review, though some pretty important Cybertruck specs for off-road use would have been useful such as:
- 17” ground clearance
- 8” air suspension adjustment range
- 1.8mm thick hardened stainless steel scratch-resistant, dent-resistant, rust-resistant, bullet-resistant body
- 35” tires
- monstrous torque for rock-crawling with load
- monstrous acceleration for over-taking with load
- 4-wheel steering for small turning circle and off-road
- upcoming potential boat-mode for amphibious capability
- range-extender drop-in battery
I would consider about half of those things to be "specs" there bud
@@TheBCninja would you prefer the terminology “features” instead?

Great job describing the differences, Kyle. I like the Rivian, but all three trucks are too big for my needs. I wish Ford would offer a Maverick EV.
Yes!
They're so close!! Why they didn't make one is so ignorant
The Maverick is coming as part of the t3 platform produced once blue oval city comes online
you forgot to mention the gear tunnel in the r1t.
The 14-30R plug is a industry generator plug
@@ChessWell17 Good call, for clarity, it's actually an L14-30R

Excellent video. I own the R1S but this particular video has been so anticipated for yrs and so congrats getting it out the door so early. Well done covering a LOT in a tight timeframe. Still madly in love w my Rivian but see some solid features in the others.
Best review yet I’ve seen by this guy … to the point, no bs, no yada yada yada, just a great insightful and informative review.
I read the Tesla chargers were opening to GM and Ford in Feb or Mar. this year.
I like all 3. But still getting CT due to supercharging network. And the home backup (more power)
Supercharger network is opening to GM and Ford in a month or two, everyone else in a few months.
@@lenm2857 not all of them, just some.

Great fast comparison between the three! My pick is the Ford!
Very nice, Can't wait to see more reviews like this
Id say it really seems like the Rivian is the best of the three, with the F150 a close second.
I’d get the F-150. If you have body and sensor damage to the Rivian or CT. Good luck getting your vehicle fixed in a reasonable timeframe and at a reasonable cost.
I was a day 1 order & I've owned my Lightning for 18 months now.
-Its my daily driver
-I love it
-Its not for everyone
-It feels and looks like a normal truck
I'm 100% satisfied & I don't know that I can go back to a gas powered vehicle
Absolutely love my Lightning, but cannot wait for my Compare. Coming soon
For towing range extending trailers are the way to go. Put the extra battery weight and a drive motor in the trailer. I've got a CT res but if I pass on foundation I'll be able to see what Ford does with T3.
wow the f150 is a massive vehicle. Not sure I would want to daily drive that. I like the size of the rivian and cybertruck.
Disagree. I think the bigger bulky truck the more beastly it looks. I thought the cyberdork was supposed too be a tank but it's actually tiny.
The Lightening is small compared to most pickups.
cybertruck has more cargo space, more cabin space than the f150 lightning, yet smaller vehicle. benefits of better space efficient engineering.
Thats one reason why i try to avoid Ford and the others. They can not do Software.
Thanks!
Hey Kyle, when the F150 lightning first came out, you hooked up seven different vehicles to that truck. I have not seen a video of you doing that with the cyber truck yet.
I’ll take the Rivian.
Tesla fanboy here but glad they're all available and great products.
Well said! All are made in the U.S. to boot, China ain't got sh*t on these badass ev trucks! 👍🏻😎
Glad to see Tesla finally starting to catch up to the competition. Probably not a position they are used to being in.
With my Lightning i use apple carplay / Apple Plans with is new % destination, almost on par with Tesla.
Oops! Forgot to mention the Rivian's gear tunnel which I think is one of the truck's most useful features.
I still can't get over the oddly low clearance in the rear of the cybertruck. WTH did they bolt on down there?
Some rumors suggest it's removable
But i don't know why creating that problem in first place
Maybe legal stuff, aerodynamics 🤔
It has an air suspension my dude ...
@@boostavIt still has a pretty mediocre departure angle, even at max height.
Air suspension isn't fixing that departure angle..and definitely not saving whatever that big (plastic, I'm sure) chunk is from getting smashed or ripped off.
Also.. it's just ugly back there...like it's cruising around with a full diaper.
From this review, the F150 lightning is fantastic as a truck before even being an electric truck. That's nice to know
I am interested to see what the electric pickup options/specs will be in 5 - 10 years.
In summary:

Tesla: Tech Bro
Lightning: Workin folk
Rivian: hipster
Tesla: travel and attention

If I had to pick, it’s definitely the Rivian for just what it is, it’s got the looks, size, range and support. The Lightning is more practical but the Rivian’s “outdoor lifestyle” looks are more appealing. Honestly tho, I wouldn’t pick any of them, I’d pick up the F-150 Hybrid and get the best of both worlds with “electric on site” and all the practicality you get with F-150s, plus Blue Cruise 😇 The cybertrucks are ridiculous and they look ridiculous in person lol, sorry guys
Can you run tests in North Dakota in the extreme winter conditions like today -20F or below?
I wish you would have lined up the rear of the trucks for the video. You talk about how much bigger the F150 is, and when you mention it, it certainly looks a lot larger based on the way the trucks are positioned. Then at 11:04 as you walk around the back, you see the Ford is parked much farther forward than the other two trucks. it makes the comparison harder to gauge honestly for oneself.
One other competition is updates…Ford almost never does updates.. Tesla will for sure have updates.. but Rivian seems king right now in this category.. makes the truck exciting and like a new toy to play with every couple months.
Are they meaningful though?
@@Lewis_Standing yes absolutely! Every single update has changed the way I drive
Rivian? Based on?
@@adamcoughran5230lol no
FSD has not improved in our experience.
@@jasons7044 Exactly this.
Would love to see a 100 mile or so Baja like race between these three trucks. I don’t think the cyber trucks lack of locking hubs will hold it back.
The CT's front and rear can electronically lock on the dual motor so all tires turning all the time. 👍
@EricMeins it currently doesn't, and it requires a software update to do so...
Rivian looks more attractive..Cyber look small..but F150 looks more realistic to be a work-horse you can take at work sites.
Why?
You want to move a truck around a site? 4 wheel steer.
Visibilty? Nice low front.
You want a REALLY secure, large storage area?
You want a longer bed?
You want ground clearance?
.
"But the side access"?
How about a bed slide-out?
Then, any access issues disappear.
.
Just sayin'
"They all win depending on the user". Well said. I think they're just different machines made for different people.
Great review, this helped me to pick the Ford F150 as it is the most practical truck of the 3.
Here’s why:
I love the new design of the CT but feel like the R1T is more functional. Things my R1T has that CT doesn’t:
1. Gear tunnel - I can’t believe how much use out of this I get (not just the storage but standing on door to reach racks/sitting on door to put wetsuit etc.
2. Bed camera - I have become reliant on this when towing/stuff in the bed
@@battousaihimura No it doesn't, it has less.
I use my frunk on my R1T every time I go to the store. Use the gear tunnel less, but when I need it, it is amazing.
@777Outrigger Rivian will have access to Tesla charging network this year.
The Rivian also has the gear tunnel (which is very functional).
Not if you consider that you lose bed length
@@bartdekingyou dont lose bed lenght at all with the gear tunnel lol
@@xavierdupuis8 you font? Sorry can't understand your sentence.
