It's some interesting contrast to see, silphy is so sweet on rudy and she has absolutely no issue removing people from this world.
Rudeus, with his earth sensibility, is the only individual with a noticeable aversion to bloodshed. Eris was unphased by ghislaine killing the kidnappers rudy has been traumatized ever since.

and when rudy and roxy were about to face battle against an army, rudy had hesitations about killing so many including potentially their own soldiers via friendlyfire. roxy, on the other hand, treated it almost like its just their duty, like there's nothing to it
Sylphie is such a sad character. Her parents loved her but never really stopped the town from picking on her. Or at least teaching her how to defend herself from the world.
Rudy is her only friend until the displacement incident. Then she chooses to be friends with the Princess even after her attacking Sylphie at night and lying to her about being killed as a spy. Which does happened in this world. But she still does choose to start as her friend.
Then she finds out her parents where killed and Nanahoshi had a part in it. Of course she would explode. This is like how after so many years of stress and self doubt and feeling worthless Rudy eventually cries. Syplie was also one to cry but now she is finally lashing out.
You have to remember at this point she feels like Rudy may not remember her. She has nobody that cares for her and she has done everything in hopes to be useful to Rudy. Just like how Eris left him to grow stronger. Sylphie started early on to try to be worth Rudy. But now she has doubt Rudy mat not care for her as much as she does him. So why would she assume anyone else would feel the same. She already knows the princess is using her but she is trying to make friends with her. For both of them. But now she sees Rudy not getting upset like she is about the displacement. She thought both of them have suffer so much in those years. At least Rudy has cried a few times since then. But Sylphie has bottled it up all those years.
Sylphie is a Saint. Maybe even an angel because even angels seek vengeance.

I’m glad you mentioned some of the novel bits. Bc I took sylphie’s reaction to be common enough that nanahoshi knew to expect it. But considering sylphie’s been ready to kill for the ones she loves since even before meeting the princess, I’m way more intrigued at that characteristic. Thank God she wasn’t there when Rudy met Orsted 😂
on the other hand nana wouldn't reveal that part if she hasn't gain rudy's trust. so its still within expectation.
I think a lot of characters/non-characters would react the way Sylphie did with Nanahoshi. Put Paul in her place. If someone said "I displaced your family, and caused unimaginable suffering to countless people" is Paul in that moment going to say "Hmm. Explain." No, I would imagine he's going to react just like Sylphie did. Maybe some characters who were not as affected by the displacement, like Cliff or Elinalise, or characters who are overly non-confrontational, like Rudeus, would wait for an explanation. But anyone who had their family or friends harmed by it, would most likely react the exact same.
It's a bit of a stretch, but saying the words Nanahoshi did would be akin to someone saying they're an Apostle to Orsted.
I don't think this interaction was written for any other reason than to show that Sylphie is dealing with a lot of grief and pain from the displacement incident, the same grief and pain that many others share.
Despite my argument above, I do agree with you on Sylphie bottling her feelings. I just don't think this explosion of rage towards Nanahoshi was her releasing her emotions. Small but important distinction.

Your definition of Bottling does not match that of fast look a mental health sights use. They use and many use Bottling for knowingly suppressing emotions. As bottling is an active choice.
You can also be emotional yet bottle up the full level of ones emotions. This explosion of rage shows a lot of emotion that has not been released. @@bujin5455

If paul came across a young girl and that girl made one comment that he understood, which was that she caused the displacement incident... no... I don't think he'd hack her head off. Maybe when he was at his worst in Millis, he may have gotten violent, but paul hasn't been killing assassins his whole life. He just isn't wired the same as Sylphie.

Never understood the waifu wars for this series… they’re all great in different ways and all flawed differently also. Even though Eris is my personal pick, i love them all! The university arc scenes with Sylphy are great- i love it!
I love character writing, can't say I'm a big fan of her or anything hehe. She's fine. Even if she's done a few frustrating things. But all the characters are flawed and do frustrating things.

I actually like how Sylphy has a dark side as she had a lot of trauma. I really like the novels giving us more details which I need to read.
all people has dark side, and trauma just different on level trauma and level maturnes.
SYlphie is your classic support type that will do anything for a friend in spite of the cost. she is maternal selfless and loyal to a fault. the anger towards Nana was not for her sake but for the sake of those she loves we saw this again with the Gorilla gurl panties incident in episode 5 and yet there was no animosity towards the princess who had severely betrayed Sylphies trust,
I always found it strange how she didn't show any animosity towards the princess. But then I realized she is the type to forgive. And she had other things on her mind at the time. Like Rudy. She stayed by the princess side to show Rudy that she can make friends and that she can become stronger. That she can becomes someone that can support. And who better to support then a princess. She wants Rudy to know that people need her by her side. Just like how she needed Rudy by her side. But now the tables have turn because Rudy respects Fittz and sees him as a dependable person which is how Sylphie sees Rudy as.

@@komocakeps527 the princess plays mind games with people. She scaried Sylphie into thinking that she will be considered a spy and killed if she didn't stay by her side after her mage was killed. She needed a new mage right when he died and Sylphie is the strongest in the kingdom. But she also could have explained the situation better and show how Sylphie saved them. She also kept her parents death a secret until it benefited her. The princess said she would look for them if Sylphie worked as her mage. When she finally was running away from the kingdom to go to school she comes clean about everything. She cries about it but you don't know if she faking a tear because Sylphie is an emotional person. So it easy to conclude Sylphie stayed with the princess because she had nobody left. And still considered her a friend at that point. It's messed up. But Sylphie is an angel and forgives very quickly. Because she sees it from different points of view and respect the other person decisions. This is something she does all the time.
The princess also tried to attack her in bed one night because she likes to force herself on women. But Sylphie fought back and knocked out off the bed for the attempt assault. Which open the princess eyes to also enjoying being forced down by people. She is a freak in bed. Like most nobility.
@@komocakeps527 she effectively admitted that she alluded to making efforts to find and help Sylphie's family and friends as a way to garner Sylphie's loyalty; and probably used her blessing to charm her in to being more suggestible to the idea.
All she heard was, I was responsible for the destruction of your home and death of your parents, so she snapped. If someone said they were why your parents died and said it as shittily as Nanahoshi did and you didn't flip out, I'd be concerned about your mental condition.
She said none of that. She said “I don’t know the specifics of why that disaster took place, however, it closely coincided with the moment that I arrived in this
world. The Incident was probably a side effect caused by whatever brought me here. In effect...In effect, it happened because of me.”
She says "I don't know how it happened" Then "It may be a side effect of WHATEVER brought me here". None of that was "I was responsible" The worst part was that it was "In Effect" because of her.
My response to those words wouldn't be to shred someone into pieces with magic (Guess I'm weird), but to ask if they know any details on whatever brought her there.

Most people get unbelivable angry for no reason if you as much as come CLOSE to hiting their cars in transit or even less serious and dangerous things.
And that's in the real world. In this fantasy world, people are way more unhinged and have even less care about killing/hurting.
Paul, Ghislaine, Eris, Ruijerd. I could see each one of them reacting the exact same.
No actually most don't get unbelievably angry and attack you for getting close to their cars. Get angry a good many but none should. It not very hard to learn how not get get angry over road offenses get counselling in this case just self help books might work.
Maybe a little drunken Sylphy would help kill those deadly urges. 😅

That was a fantastic take on Sylphie! I have never considered this since I am not a LN reader... Having been in many life or death situations while I am as laid back and fat jolly guy that likes to laugh I too can flip my switch real fast. I think what scares some people is how quickly I can switch off and be ready to laugh and have a beer with you....I think this is not a sign of a person with violent intent rather demonstrates that they have been in situations where violence was the only way to survive the encounter. The fact that they can switch off quickly is a good sign. It is the people that hang on to their hate, anger and rage that I think one needs to be worried about. As small as Slyphie is if things go sideways fast her only hope of surviving is to use overwhelming force and violence as fast as possible. She can't wait for things to happen or take the first plow and hope she can tank it. When you are small the second you know words have failed and it is going down striking hard, fast and first is often the best way to win. Even in sports with weight classes like wrestling in high school and college the person that get's the first take down wins the match something like 76% of the time. Street fights often work the same the aggressor normally wins! So small female with limited fighting ability and no sword skills but hi in magic definitely attacking first is her best policy!
Bet that he'll love and understand Sylphie more in a few more volumes

Well, she could have killed a common person, but a common person wouldnt be able to knock down Rudy like that, now imagine her, seeing her only friend, one that she admires so much and know he is strong AF, already a saint-level water mage which is able to silent cast, and all she know is that he is being knocked down, of course she would shoot with all she have in hopes to save him. Paul could easily knock her down too since he just did it to Rudy, she didnt even care about that, meaning she would try to save Rudy even if it means certain death to her.

Very interesting, Sylphie is definitely stronger than Nanahoshi, but she is deeply afraid of Nnahoshi because what Sylphie really afraid of is "The disappearance of Rudy". And Nanahoshi is the person who can really make Rudy disappear from this world. If Rudy gets really close to Nanahoshi, he has a high possibility of going back to his world with her(We know it's impossible but Sylphie doesn't know). That is why Sylphie has a strong anxiety about Nanahoshi but herself can't tell the reason.
sylphi in current time don't know anything about that, zero, even she question about "same world" and the two not explain it. so she dosn't know about reicarnation/teleportation.

He also makes Nanahoshi the biggest Hypothetical enemy of Sylphie in the same recipe. You know, there are no coincidences in this story, everything is well-designed by the writer.
well silphie doesnt know nanahoshi is from earth and has no mana, she probably asumed she is at least as strong as rudy since she is treated with even more benefits then rudy, and even now she doesnt know that the magic came from the rings and probably thinks it was hers. but yeah even if she thinks she cant kill her, she probably intended too since she thought she is the one who is responsible for her suffering. this is all from my point of view as a anime only viewer + videos about cut content

about sylphie being ten and killing. this is not our world with our morals and our safety. even in our world we have child soldiers and its sad cause we have the comfort and culture to say its bad. but this is a world of majic and monsters. sylphie and rudeus were lucky to have a skilled knight like paul protecting the town where they a relatively safe upbringing. this is also reflective that they only celebrate every five years of birthdays that the world is so dangerous that those are milestones

Sylphie has always been best girl to me for this series. I rewatched the whole series the last couple days so I could have it fresh in my mind when going through your skipped content playlist. In my originally watch through I never saw Eris the goblin slayer and Episode 0 about fitz and Ariel. Even as we are now Sylphie is still best girl. I cannot get myself to be interested in visual novels so unfortunately for me I have to be an anime only. I appreciate hearing your thoughts about the series as well as added context from the LN.

Just wanna throw out there for any anime-only's: I think it's important to take this video with a grain of salt lol. Andrew displayed a preeeeetty heavy distaste for Sylphie throughout the entirety of the University arc during his LN readthrough, and it feels a touch unfair to not forewarn people of that IMO. It was to an extent where, on a couple occasions, his analysis completely derailed from the actual content, and was focused almost solely off his own interpretation. It feels like the premise of this is somewhat reaching back into that headspace, as it's kinda nuts calling Sylphie's reaction a "violent outburst" instead of a 'pretty understandable outrage at the admission by Nanahoshi that she killed both of Sylphie's parents as well as most of the people she grew up with (and, very nearly, her too)'.
Also, before I get the comments - don't just default to "oh you're a Sylphie simp", that's a cop-out. All characters of the story are flawed, and Andrew brings up a lot of valid criticisms for Sylphie, but this is one area of the story where he has a predilection to get a bit unhinged.
Sorry I did not pick up any distaste by Andrew for Sylphie. I think Andrew rather likes her.
It's a violent outburst and actual criminal act that a court will punish you for even if it lightens the scenance. You are expected to never physically attack someone who is just saying something even if they say they killed someone you loved. You might get linancy but it is still considered wrong. Understandable but wrong.

Rifujin writes flawed characters, and I've talked about all of them to great detail. Shoot, Paul has gotten the most criticism out of all of them.
@@milferdjones2573 Sadly the hyper sylphie fans REALLY hate that I criticized a few actions sylphie takes. Most joke about it in fun in the chat for premieres and in discord, but there's a few that are WAY too into it in a scary way. But hey, that comes with the territory of analysis of anime/manga/LN. Some people cannot disconnect themselves from Fiction and get too emotional about it.

I'm not defending the fictional character, I'm saying those without full context probably shouldn't put much weight on this topic or allow it to influence how they experience the story. You've made a video aimed at people watching the anime, but based it off of content almost entirely outside of the anime. Further than that, there were quite a few thought processes that you followed which were a deep stretch even for the LN's content. I find it distasteful to put out content which aims for a group which does not have the proper information to discredit your head-canon, and not preempt the video with a disclaimer to that effect. As a Sylphie enjoyer I can agree that she is a bit unhinged early on, but as you explained (very well btw) she had a very unfortunate upbringing and when everything is brought together it all makes sense. Sylphie is def a badass though love her.

I don't get what is scary about Sylph's reaction, imagine you're a warrior (which she is, no matter the age), a navy marine if you will and you suddenly come face to face to someone that nuked your hometown, fed your life and caused so much pain to everyone you loved, let me correct myself EVERYONE YOU KNEW and on top of that that same individual threw you in a foreign land, alone, inexperienced as a CHILD (now age comes in to play). Would ask something? Or would you burst out in rage and beat the crap out of this monster (in your eyes she is undoubtedly a monster), no matter Truman's reasons a mid century Japanese vet (who live in Nagasaki prior to the nukes) would 100% kill Truman on sight with his teeth if he had too.

I watch Dub as im a slow reader and would have to pause every new sentense, so I was wondering y they were talking in another language since all 3 of them could speak "english". In the moment, I didnt pick up that it was Japanese. This makes that scene make so much more sense.
I mean in her defense, she got sent to a random place, lost all friends and familly as a pre teen, had to kill at that same age, and then nanahoshi opens up by saying i caused the incident.... i think most would have gone off by that alone, like you said, she doesnt have the context behind it, but just saying that as your opener was not a smart choice either xD

Did not really need the Context for why she attacked Nanohoshi. It was obvious, unless you where not paying attention to the whole Scene. But this just proves there nobody in the series is perfect and that just makes me love Sylphie more. Its not what makes someone great that makes up love them but the flaws they have.

The nanahoshi situation was also undertandable, Nanahoshi basically said "I murder your parents... oops no, I didn't mean that". There's nothing to explain because what nanahoshi said was clear, the problem was that she was incorrect. She said something that wasn't true

You have to get to the later volumes of the novels to see how Sylphie becomes a controlled badass in her own right
She's not unhinged, it's just the common sense of that world ro kill or be killed to survive, she may look like that for us in our society that's legally, morally, ethically... Etc. Incorrect, but that's not our world, that's a medieval world where it is completely normal for trained kids to kill, even the noveles show us that Rudeus' will to not kill is something uncommon among adventurers

As a Sylphie stan through and through i am very sad that some ppl were bashing u for theorizing and interpreting a character ur own way. like negatives about character's personality doesn't mean u think they are a bad character. all 3 girls have faults(yes despite the goddess jokes Roxy is def not perfect lmfao, she has her own share of problems) but it doesn't mean they are bad characters.
some people who love their "waifus" see them as perfect with no faults but that's not always the case. Hell biggest example is Rem, a lot of her fans and ppl perceive her as this perfect maid waifu when in reality she has tons of internal problems with her mentality and everything and i am saying this as a Rem fan(she is my fav female chara in RZ still even as of Arc 8)

The novels are amazing, some of the best stuff that I've ever read. Make sure you stick to the light novels and not the web novel as they are the definitive Mushoku Tensei. I just finished volume 24 and I am dying for them to finish translating the next volume!

i love your videos. but on one point of yours, i would disagree. i'm anime-only. even as i was watching it, i thought and felt Sylphy's responses were understandable. i would reserve the word unhinged for ERIS... because eris would lose her tempter and control over petty things, countless times.

everything was due to the mana calamity. her family gone, her second family scattered (rudy and his family), everything she was working towards hoping to see rudy again (after he would be done training eris).... being transported to a place where you have no idea who and who not to trust and being alone, as a child....... unable to be yourself, to be a child, to even embrace your own sex... that would be hard, to say the least, on anyone.
(and i would think most people--if they had as close of a connection to buena village and the fittoa region--if they heard nanohoshi say that she caused the mana calamity... they too would be outraged, to say the least.)
AND YET DESPITE ALL THAT SYLPHY's GONE THROUGH... sylphy isn't jaded or bitter, but is still super sweet feminine nurturing caring pure innocent and devoted. she saved herself for rudy. she's willing to dress and be considered a boy and ward of all the boys...believing that in teh end it won't matter because she's been dreaming she's gonna be with rudy anyways. she's the best waifu for rudy. also best representation of ultimate waifu irl. she's so perfect of an idea it's actually very sad because she's like a unicorn--a woman like that doesn't exist in real life. and if she did it would prob be like 1 in 6 billion lol
but paul was right... if her heart were to ever be broken by rudy... she would never ever recover. she's too pure and it's largely what makes her amazing.

I'm not some tunnel vision guy that will "hate" Eris for leaving Rudy...because only the fallowing episode she told the audience that she left him so she can get stronger FOR HIM. (And I didn't needed that explanation to not hate her...I knew that her living Rudy was for HIM...because I watched her growing up around Rudy starting from episode 5).
Same with Paul...I didn't hate Paul starting with episode 4 or before episode 17.

I don't think Sylphie is unhinged in the typical sense, It's more like the fact that her actions could kill, just never ever even enters her mind to beginwith. Furthermore I don't even think it enters her mind after the fact either, It's just never a thing that her brain computes.
