@Snobby Erusean Valley Girl a devastating attack on the white legs is rational and moral. Killing their children isn’t and Joshua clearly has that in mind. His people are religious zealots, but they are zealots dedicated to non violence in self defense. A genocide would polite them immeasurably, and in a few generations make them extremely dangerous if the zealotry wasn’t abandoned. They wouldn’t become the white legs, they would become something like early American puritans, witch hunts and all, if not medieval crusaders.

It's all blaming Satan instead of understanding it's instead about the sins inside humanity and taking responsibility. They rely on their priests to just parrot scripture instead of getting them to try and understand it. I find Christianity the most interesting in the Middle Ages and Antiquity because while there is love thy neighbor, you were by no means supposed to be a doormat. Evil deeds must be punished.

@@manbearpig5917 yes, the scripture (Psalm 137) is Jewish (and Christian) and since the Mormons use the King James Bible as half of their scriptures, it makes sense that Joshua uses it too. Mormons read the Bible too, but they take many views which Christians (including myself) find heretical.

Just allowing that to happen invites them to take advantage of them whenever possible, I've never finished honest hearts with daniels plan cause its just so spineless like just retreating the dead horses and sorrows as if the white legs or some other tribe that caesar takes control of won't just find them again and do the same thing, Joshua understands that surrendering to the white legs shows weakness and just encourages them to do it again and again
@@tapwater236 Joshua saw that the White Legs were a thorn on their side. So long as they continued to live the Sorrows and Dead Horses's living would be compromised. This is to mirror the Old Testament that so long as other tribes were to stay in Canaan, Israel's way of living will always be influenced by such tribes. Daniel's view of Zion not being a place but more of a people stems from the New Testament. Where salvation became universal and that the belief that they held wasn't just for them but for others also and in the end they will all return someday. In all honesty this is where the genius of New Vegas comes in. Joshua and Daniel didn't view the White Legs as worthy of salvation, at least no mention of it from Daniel and Joshua abhorred them. Daniel never mentioned coexistence he just wanted to flee and return someday. That's not really possible as without coexistence with the white legs they'll never be able to come back. Daniel never reached out to the white legs or educate them, so he compromised the way of living for the dead horses and the sorrows. While Joshua did the opposite,but almost to the same effect. He sought to remove the white legs from Zion but he indulge himself and the others in the act of killing. This in turn still compromised their belief, as the dead horses and sorrows became prone to warmongering and violence. In the end the peaceful way of life was still robed away from them. Basically Daniel's way lost Zion literally, while Joshua's way lost Zion metaphorically.
Joshua is a pragmatist first, religious second. Daniel is religious first, and it fucks up his world view.

It's interesting to note that Joshua says Zion is a place and a state of being. You basically choose what you want to remain of Zion after you decide on a course of action. Daniel sacrificed the place and Joshua sacrificed the state of being. His quote about sitting by the rivers of Babylon can be used in both scenarios. If they fight the tribals sacrifice their innocence and lose Zion the state of being, if they leave they lose the Zion the place. No matter what choice you make Zion is lost and is left to be found again. There really is no correct decision to be made, either the spirit or the place is lost and after the decision is made there is no turning back.

Honestly, I've started playing Fallout without the subtitles. I've found that I don't skip the dialogue anymore or skip it when I finish reading what they have to say before they even finish speaking it.

Psalm 137 depicts the loss of Lachish, for the Hebrews it was Zion at the time. The Assyrian Empire took it over, and the verse Graham states is discussing the experience of those citizens that were forcibly deported out of the Assyrian Empire by King Sennacherib at 701 BC. The citizens were slaughtered and chased out by the Assyrians, the elderly young and sick were slaughtered in a path leading south. The surviving Hebrews wept, when they remembered Zion. I think it is important to understand what he is referencing and what Graham is actually discussing.
In context of the game, this is a truly amazing parallel of storytelling to real world history and Biblical accounts. Joshua Graham is right, because when the Hebrews left they were just slaughtered, that's why int he story of Honest Hearts Graham is right and the only option was to fight back otherwise they'd be wiped out just like the citizens of Lachish in 701 BC.

I'm currently reading the books written by st Paul and found myself reading them with his voice, idk I think it fits Saul of Tarsus pretty well given his previous role as persecuter of the Christians.

I like to think of Joshua Graham as the Old Testament - fire and brimstone and Daniel as the New Testament - forgiveness and redemption...
Actually the book of Mormon itself (yes I'm a Mormon like Joshua) has a lot of stories of war where the people would sacrifice so much to fight for their existence with righteous fury. Which in my makes Joshua Graham, a violent man that repented yet struggles with who he is. A far better example of a Mormon then Daniel. A good yet niave man whos letting his emotions control him into making bad decisions
God is the same God we've always known. The Old Testament is full of examples of God's patience and forgiveness with his people.

Joshua Graham is an example of someone who misunderstands the old testament, whereas Daniel is an example of someone who correctly understands the old testament in light of the new. The old testament is all about Jesus. Those who believe the old testament but reject the new don't realize this.

Everything else about Honest Hearts is 'okay' at best, but Joshua Graham remains one of the most captivating and fascinating characters in the entire series. How does something like that happen?
Because they had always planned on doing a dlc with Joshua Graham but this was also one with the most shoddy development time. The rest of the characters came later.
The survivalist story is amazing not "ok".

Something interesting about Joshua is that him being “killed” by the Legion only to rise again is a direct parallel to Jesus (whose teachings Joshua recites) being “killed” by the Romans (whom the Legion based themselves off off ) only to then rise again
The death of Jesus wasn't because of the Romans. His blood is not in their hands. Although they are partly to blame.
Don't forget the fact that name "Joshua" is the alter version of "Jesus".

In the canceled Van Buren (and originally in New Vegas), you were supposed to have Joshua as a companion. Iirc, in both instances this was supposed to be a more angry and vengeful Joshua while Honest Hearts is a more calm version, basically after his character quest finds a good end

It’s not really a choice as to who I side with in Honest Hearts. The fact that Daniel, and the rest of his patronised pseudopacifistic ‘innocent’ tribe will attack you if you refuse to help them is ridiculous. He accuses the Courier of being a squatter and a whining child for surviving an attack, and then not wanting to walk out mostly unsupported and fight Giant Cazadores and Giant Yao Gaoi while he sits on his ass. And all so he can run from the White Legs into god knows what, just to avoid teaching the tribe the reality of the post-apocalyptic wasteland. The White Legs reap what they sow, Salt Upon Wounds especially. Joshua may be a greater evil at his most bloodthirsty, but he’s infinitely preferable in that he’s not a condescending prick and he actually has a practical and viable plan to save the lives of the Dead Horses and Sorrows, as well as equipping them to survive future threats.
I feel like Joshua isn't even a greater evil compared to Daniel, but more... Joshua is just (he seeks and demands justice) ,which explains his cutthroat approaches such as driving/killing the White Legs. I will say though, Joshua is a great leader with his practical vision as you said and uses fear (fear of god) to his advantage.

as someone who grew up in a religious family and community I appreciate the fact that I can understand the character references (John, Doubting Thomas, Mathew and Mark)
What makes Joshua so memorable for me is that, behind his religious paraphrasing and quoting, there is a man that sees the world with a practical outlook. He knows the white legs will not stop pursuing no matter what and that running away will only get the Sorrows so far. Joshua is a man of violence and he's not afraid to share this knowledge to the Sorrows so that they can defend from any invaders. He doesn't want the Sorrows to leave and is willing to to everything in his power to prevent that from happening and also prevent the White Legs from ruining Zion.
He doesn't belittle the player either when they say they aren't religious, he understands that pragmatically there isn't much reason to have faith in the world of Fallout, he doesn't care that do you not believe, and still sees you as a child of God all the same.

The Bible apps KJV version reading by Max McLean has pretty similar Joshua Graham vibe with transatlantic accent. I've been listening to it and it's pretty cool.
I remember listening to the Boney M song as a kid in Nigeria every Sunday and I loved it so much. hearing Joshua say the same bible verse and with me now understanding it's deeper meaning, this is quite the full-circle moment. Great game. Can't wait to play it this year.

And he thinks that a bunch of rocks blocking a tunnel that can be removed in a couple of months or maybe weeks with hard enough labor will make the white legs stop chasing them, he got lucky because the courier convinced salt upon wounds to stop or kill him
If the courier weren't there to "intervene" the white legs would still hunt them down
And let's not forget the white legs almost wiped out a tribe and killed the people who weren't fast enough like the fucking kids and the elderly

Every time I hear this guy's voice, I think it's Kiefer Sutherland. Every single time. I'm playing LA Noire for the first time this week, and Keith Szarabajka voices a character in that game as well. And just like always, I had to look it up and see who it was.

The base game is, of course, immersive and well thought-out, but man... Honest Hearts.
Joshua is such an interesting character that he, and the struggle in Zion, is what I think of when I think of New Vegas. The practicality of the matter as well as the intentions as to how it will come about. Nobody really "wins" in the truest sense, but it gets resolved, regardless.
The fact that there's multiple outcomes and they're all tragic in different ways speaks to the thought and care that went into their construction. Great writing all around.

It's a bible reference. He's saying that Daniel resembles John's nature as it was described in the bible. John, Matthew, and Mark being 3 of the 12 apostles of Jesus.

@@burnsbooks69 Well I'm not a theologist by any means, but I do know that John was the youngest of the apostles. So we can deduce that he's saying that John, in this case Daniel, is more passive and naive.

I think he means Daniel sees the situation differently.
