Nearly 40 years ago Timbuk3 released "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" a year before Harry's Countach was delivered. Back then optimism ruled Western Culture... now we are frightened of words...
I live just off the A5 where Harry filmed that last sequence - it's part of my daily commute. 15 years ago I got up over 200kph for longer stretches nearly every morning and evening. These days I'm happy if my average speed is up near 100kph on the same stretch of the A5. The slow lane is usually solid trucks. :-(
There's something special about unfolding a paper map, tracing routes with your finger, and getting a sense of the landscape. It feels nostalgic and grounding in a world dominated by electronics and screens. So analog!
I was lucky enough to go to Europe with my family on holiday,late 70s / early 80s,my Granda drove the whole way (from Scotland) and only had a road map like Harry's but we never got lost, will never forget it. amazing memories
Your comments about driving in the UK Harry are so spot on. We've just done 2175mls around Europe, which was motoring perfection. Got back to the UK, the roads are worse than Caracas, solid traffice and road works every mile. In France you can drive thousands of miles with only metal signs for navigation. But here in the uK we have towers, lots of towers with average speed cameras. Then on top of that we have more cameras, lots of them. Alas the actual road surface (the stuff we actually drive on) was not a consideration. 🤯
I like the idea that this 70's supercar behemoth is a bit grumpy in the morning. It's personable. It lets you know that you can't take it for granted like any modern car. Teaches you mechanical sympathy towards it. This is part of motoring imho...
I would've taken a V12 Jag any day for grace space and pace, but Harry has proven that grumpy Italian stallions can do it as well as long there's no salt on the road.
I have to say that Harry is the most honest and interesting petrol head I've ever watched. His years of journalism are very evident, much in the same way as Clarkson, only with a little more class. We are fortunate that mature pro's like Harry make the effort to keep us all thoroughly entertained.

I love the way that even when it starts up, it sounds like a heavy smoking, heavy drinking elderly Italian guy. Coughing and spluttering, in need of the first cigarette and glass of something strong. It practically has stubble and a scruffy old vest on. And then, gradually, it warms up and becomes a muscled, bronzed guy from 1986, sharp designer suit and dark glasses. It must be so much more satisfying having to wrestle that operatic prehistoric monster around, than it ever is with modern supercars that just teleport you wherever you want to go, with no sense of awe, no sense of drama. I can only imagine how it sounded and looked driving through the forest, the definitive red exotic, headlights on, drizzle saturating the colours, V12 howling. Bedroom wall poster stuff.
I live in Kent yesterday and around dusk a Spitfire from Biggin Hill that does trips through the Kent countryside flew over. That engine turns heads and you know what it is, even if you can't see it.

The car was originally shown at the 1987 motor show and bought by one of the individuals involved in the Barlow Clowes affair. I believe the car was impounded and subsequently bought by Frank Sytner Group which is who my father purchased it from.
There's people in the UK whose heads are exploding wondering how you managed to do 150mph without turning into a fireball. The ones who'll tell you 70mph is far too dangerous and we should all be doing 20mph. Beautiful seeing the Countach doing what it's meant to do.
On French + Spanish roads the drivers have far better lane discipline than most UK drivers. Nothing more frustrating than mid lane hoggers. Also the UK road network is riddled with pot holes.
As a young guy, a student, maybe 1973, I picked up a car mag with a pic of a green Countach on the cover, and a test drive report inside...I have craved that car above all others ever since. othing since then has surpassed the excitement...ok, all are faster, safer, fancier... but the Contach still reigns supreme. Thank you for this video, Harry!
Some cars really do well with the spoiler, and I think the countach is one actually. Also the red paint and bronze wheels always looked great on this car. Harry, time for a new windshield wiper though!
I love hearing this Countach start. When my daughter was about two years old, I would play for her a video from Harry’s Garage. As he attempted to start the Countach, she used to giggle so much as it burst into life after the third or so try! It started a love of classic cars for her that lasts to this day and makes me smile every time Harry takes this out on a road trip. We are fortunate that there are people who actually use these beautiful cars, rather than just keep them under wraps to take out once a year for a concours. Well done Harry!

Was in Iceland last week and saw a more than capable offroader from Switzerland with lots of stickers from its adventures. The most important sticker was however on the dash. "Reminder to driver - Don't forget this vehicle has got to get you home"!

I recall a tv item showing the last hours of the last deristricted autobahn around Berlin.... also on that topic the last moments of no speed limit in Montana USA a couple of years after Bill Clinton was made to drop the Federal speed limit ( Three states returned briefly to their no speed limit status) brought in for the fuel shortage in the 70's at 55 but raised to 65 by Reagan. How many politicians ever rsise a speed limit. The UK had a blanket 20 speed limit until around 1930 when a truly heroic minister ordered all roads deristricted except in town which was 30 .... Happy days lasted until autmn 1965 with a 70 blanket limit .... everything points to a gradual return to 20 and a graph would predict Zero in due course!
Currently in Italy on my honeymoon so looking forward to seeing the rest of the videos 🙂 Visited both Ferrari museums and wandered around Maranello a bit. Also took in the Lamborghini museum the day before and the day after, visited Pagani and had the factory tour, the latter was an amazing insight into how the cars are produced and how great a workplace it is. Of course, someone had to ask about LH's old car and needless to say the chap giving the tour didn't divulge any information. Did see a Zonda with a UK plate though... Loved seeing your Countach at full chat on the de-restricted sections, sounded amazing!
Wonderful to still have access to derestricted roads. And a perfect example that speeding can be safe as well as fun (and gets you to your destination sooner too!)
It’s quite bemusing to me that Harry uses a Countach of all cars as his long range GT on these trips. And the car manages it too! Without self-destructing and despite constant 88 decibel cabin noise! 😆

Countach, Diablo … When I was young I just coudnt amaging how it was possible to develop such kind of cars. If to compare their shapes and forms with the regular cars they look like from deep deep space from another galaxy ;) Still sooooo cool and unique vehicles for me

So good to see this car being driven for what it was designed to do. Harry is single handedly reclaiming the old motoring journalism that we used to love in a new form. Epic road trips in machinery designed for the job. Too many great GT’s and supercars get a bad reputation for reliability and practicality because they are simply not driven and used as intended. If you use them and keep using them they keep rewarding you. What I would like to see next from harry is a slimming down of the collection and spending more time and mileage with his core vehicles.

I cross this bridge across the rhine every morning to go to work in Strasbourg. Brilliant seeing a Countach taken on a road trip. Love the slightly grumpy sound of the engine in the morning.
I imagine at 150mph, on a busy autobahn, in a car of that age that you are just thankful that Mr Tyrell and his merry men have given it all the tlc that such a car requires ? And kudos to your passenger (Mrs M ?) for filming at that speed ! Thoroughly enjoyable, keep ‘em coming.

My fave. version of the Countach - between late '85 to early '88. No side skirts and silly wing. The Countach today will still command most of the attention if it was parked next to the modern hyper cars. Great video. The thumbnail picture is awesome.
1:21 Totally agree. I used to have a motorhome and toured throughout Europe but always dreaded the drive from the Midlands to Dover port. The roads in Europe are an absolute joy to drive by comparison.
Thanks for that Harry. The arrogant Merc is nowt unusual here. The level of road craft has plumited over the last 25 years. There was a banking infrastructure wobble causing problems with all card payments while you were on your way. Utterly glorious soundtrack to the journey Harry. Awesome video! You made a lot of people in France and Germany happy that day :) I'm always wondering abt the reactions of people on those departemental French roads when they see a Countach. And also on the Autoroute/Autobahn. They are such special cars. Still.
Every time I see Harry's sublime Countach I smile to myself. In homage to the great car (and chap) I painted the wheels of my Rosso Corsa Husqvarna Ride on mower pale gold to match. The ride's not quite as good but, the fun factor's there.
I do a lot of truck driving in Germany, always a treat to see something a bit special put through its paces, Eastern part seems better for quieter unrestricted Autobahn. Early Saturday mornings are quite a good time, but you do have to keep a sharp eye in the mirror if you are about to overtake, some of the cars come past so fast they shake the truck.
Really enjoying this video series. Thank you! Have toured much of these areas on my MV Agusta, an equally impractical but special vehicle. Also feels special as I visit these special companies and wonderful places often with work in aerodynamics.
When i was at primary school the book sellers came around once a year. My mum generally would only allow us to buy reading books but one year she relented and let me buy a picture book on supercars. This, the f40 and the testarossa were the ones i couldnt stop looking at. No interest in modern super cars but i love to see these older ones. Big engine, gearbox, steering wheel and the driver. Wonderful to see and hear, for taking us along with you.

I had the same sensation when he pulled out an old map. Can you still buy them? Although, in big metropolitan areas the map app rules.

It was always a dog to start, my old man owned this car from 1988 to late 1989. Fond memories of this car. Supercars were very rare back then.

So good to see this car being driven for what it was designed to do. Harry is single handedly reclaiming the old motoring journalism that we used to love in a new form. Epic road trips in machinery designed for the job. Too many great GT’s and supercars get a bad reputation for reliability and practicality because they are simply not driven and used as intended. If you use them and keep using them they keep rewarding you. What I would like to see next from harry is a slimming down of the collection and spending more time and mileage with his core vehicles.

I cross this bridge across the rhine every morning to go to work in Strasbourg. Brilliant seeing a Countach taken on a road trip. Love the slightly grumpy sound of the engine in the morning.

My favorite of Harry's videos are his Euro road trips. I binged them all when I was in hospital for a week a year ago. It's wonderful to see a new one where he is driving his Countach. My boyhood wall poster.🤣👍
God that car is so striking. I mean, 50 years on IMO it still looks better than anything being produced now and likely has more character than anything current too.

That thumbnail shot is sensational. God this car is so dramatic from every angle. Yes it's very 80s. But since that is the greatest decade in history and this later model is seen as a highlight from that era only proves further how special it is.

My fave. version of the Countach - between late '85 to early '88. No side skirts and silly wing. The Countach today will still command most of the attention if it was parked next to the modern hyper cars. Great video. The thumbnail picture is awesome.
Love it. Furthest I drove my Countach was from Kansas to South Florida when I bought it. Think it was about 1600 miles. Amazing trip , amazing car.

1:21 Totally agree. I used to have a motorhome and toured throughout Europe but always dreaded the drive from the Midlands to Dover port. The roads in Europe are an absolute joy to drive by comparison.
Thanks for that Harry. The arrogant Merc is nowt unusual here. The level of road craft has plumited over the last 25 years. There was a banking infrastructure wobble causing problems with all card payments while you were on your way. Utterly glorious soundtrack to the journey Harry. Awesome video! You made a lot of people in France and Germany happy that day :) I'm always wondering abt the reactions of people on those departemental French roads when they see a Countach. And also on the Autoroute/Autobahn. They are such special cars. Still.
Every time I see Harry's sublime Countach I smile to myself. In homage to the great car (and chap) I painted the wheels of my Rosso Corsa Husqvarna Ride on mower pale gold to match. The ride's not quite as good but, the fun factor's there.

I do a lot of truck driving in Germany, always a treat to see something a bit special put through its paces, Eastern part seems better for quieter unrestricted Autobahn. Early Saturday mornings are quite a good time, but you do have to keep a sharp eye in the mirror if you are about to overtake, some of the cars come past so fast they shake the truck.

Really enjoying this video series. Thank you! Have toured much of these areas on my MV Agusta, an equally impractical but special vehicle. Also feels special as I visit these special companies and wonderful places often with work in aerodynamics.

When i was at primary school the book sellers came around once a year. My mum generally would only allow us to buy reading books but one year she relented and let me buy a picture book on supercars. This, the f40 and the testarossa were the ones i couldnt stop looking at. No interest in modern super cars but i love to see these older ones. Big engine, gearbox, steering wheel and the driver. Wonderful to see and hear, for taking us along with you.
