  • Cilento is an area south of Salerno in Region Campania, not far from Naples, Italy.
It is famous for its unspoilt natural beauty.
Indeed, the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano are Listed among UNESCO World Heritage.
Unsurprisingly, the coast of Cilento is crowded on weekends, when many Italian, and comparatively less, foreign tourists, go there for a swim or the best Mozzarella, or to visit the Greek Temples in Paestum.
However, here in Italy, the golden rule for those who wish to escape crowds, is to head towards the mountains.
This is precisely what I did, by visiting Gioi.
Like many small rural villages, young people tend to move to the city and come back for the holidays.
The highlights of my visit (after a tough running event the day before) were a visit to the 'Piccolo Salumificio Artigianale di Gioi e La Despenza'/ The Small Artisanal Cured Meats local producer and its Larder, and a local Agriturismo/ Farm and Restaurant, 'Area del Campo'. Framed by the village streets and views of the National Park of Cilento.
I hope part of the Italian Community in the United States will be able to watch the video and retrace their roots.

My son and I visited Gioi in early October 2019. I was hoping to talk to some locals, but everything was closed and the town was very quiet. I enjoyed your video of the town where my grandparents came from. I live near Seattle WA USA. Thanks, Gil

Hello Gil, nice to hear from you.
Gioi is indeed quiet. It becomes more lively on sundays or when people come back (from other cities) for holidays. Keep in touch for any inquiries. I might be able to help. seanaltamura@gmail.com
