  • Both my cigarette lighter and accessory outlets in the 2005 GMC Sierra have failed. Turns out the right hand side was due to a failed 15 amp fuse in the panel under the hood (CIG LTR) and the left hand side was due to the accessory outlet itself.

Thank for this video. Thought there was only one fuse for cigar lighter. Went to check it after viewing video and the fuse was blown! Tore dash apart before this video truly a life saver!!!!!!

I've been trying to track down the fuse for that right hand socket for ever. I didn't find a bad fuse. Now that I know which fuse for sure it is. I can look at it again. And also check the socket itself. This is SO helpful. I found the left socket fuse and replaced that one, no issue. Opposite of you. I am guessing 15A fuse should be the limit for both. Ther sockets may not handle 20A.

I suspect the wiring is not large enough to handle 20A without over heating, probably best to stick with a 15A

Great video! Thanks for sharing. Same thing happened to me. All I needed to do is rub some 1,000 grit sand paper on that inside , bottom contact and it cleaned it up enough to work. I have reciently replaced that one with a dedicated USB port.

Yea found same issue in mine today...yellow fuse 20amp controls aux power closest to steering wheel...blue 15amp controls secondary aux outlet closest to passenger side....both fuses are good...my first aux outlet runs good...my secondary is not lightning up...figure it's the outlet itself....good video tho

For some reason they are prone to failure. I remember mine running very hot also, I assume there was a high resistance point before it died completly.

Are they in series? The aux on the dash, and the power outlet on the rear seat console and the rear storage area outlet are all bad. And so is my aftermarket rear view camera.....

If they have separate fuses they aren't in a series.

Thanks for sharing this! Just had all my cigarette outlets in my 05 Denali die this past week (same experience, one failing after the next). Hoping it’s just the fuses but good to know what else might be contributing to the problem just in case. Much appreciated.

I just fixed mine. All loose and wigley. I stuffed a 3/8 bolt in the socket, placed on the vice, put a extension in the other end. Hit it with a hammer to tighten the rivet. Still no connection. Used a solder iron and melted a pocket a gutter from the center to the pin. Filled with solder. Get the pin good and hot. I HAVE A CONNECTION!

Check out part 2. If you have a soldering iron, you should be able to fix it and save yourself a few dollars.
