I took it to an independent shop, who successfully diagnosed the problem. Shoutout to Denio Automotive in Phillipsburg, Ks! I had them bypass the issue, (instead of buying the correct but very expensive part) with a push button(leave the ign. sw. in the on position, then push the button to run the starter). This was after I had a dealership mechanic(on his own time at my house) replace the intake gasket, because he was "pretty sure" that's what's wrong, never did any other diagnoses. Then I replaced the crankshaft sensor, then the camshaft sensor. Hope this saves someone else some trouble.

Sorry for the late reply. You likely have multiple problems BUT if u are in the rust belt start by cleaning up the 2 grounds by the driver door on the frame. Grounds problem can cause multiple issues….
i did this but just ran a 18 gauge cable from the relay to my battery, but now my abs light and brake light come on, as well as my ac not working and slow acceleration, like my transmission isn’t shifting, not really sure what the issue is. :(
Did the starter stay engaged and it start in accessory when you left it grounded before you put the start button on it? Is that the reason you did the start button? I'm having the exact same problem with a truck that I am working on. It was a 4.3 I put in a 5.3 and that is the problem I am having. Been chasing grounds and all that fun stuff for a week.
No - BUT if you stop the ground to the starter relay the starter should not turn. For example - w my push button if I hold the button in it will continue to turn the starter. Once I release the button the ground to the starter relay is stopped. Hope that helps you.
I’ve swapped out a the v6 for a v8 swap and having the similar problem on my 2002 Silverado except mine is a manual it started fine when it had the v6 but ever since I’ve done the swap it would on,y start if I jump the starter
Just wondering: could the fuse box panel have a break in it that's causing a partial (low volt) short? Or the feed wire to that particular ground wire is cracked perhaps? You've proven that the starter is good because you bypassed it with your very cool push button start. Electrical problems can be quite tricky to nail.
Who knows... my original fuse box was messed up by mice/chipmunks which is why I replaced it. The truck was fine with that fuse box until the starter puked. Replaced the starter and the whole no start no crank issue began... I know I have a bad ground somewhere but the solution I came up with worked and is still working. I will update if the push button start fails but so far it’s been an “easy” solution.. good luck!
Good evening from Texas! K U D O S !!!! on your video. Very informative. I have the same problem with my 2007 Silverado 4.8 engine. No crank no start! Changed the acceralate pedal and throttle body. It started for several cranks but let it rest for awhile. Later it wouldn't start at all! Reset codes and added additional grounds (hood), clean all grounds and it cranked but no start. I tried it again but no crank. My last resort is to check all fuses and relay. Any suggestions? Shall wait for your response.
So I had a key made at Walmart just to be a door key… well it turns out that somehow it started my truck so I have been using that key for a week now w/o any problems. Today i locked my keys in my ignition and had to slim Jim in and push unlock button to gain access inside. After doing so I got in and my truck wouldn’t start. Just acts as if the starter don’t work but I know its fine. The security light is flashing now as well. If I run direct power to the 10 amp fuse inside it don’t try to start either. Just a ding from Interior. But if I run power to a spot where the relay goes it cranks but sounds real weird and don’t actually start up. Lots of info I know but I’m at a loss and stuck in some parking lot. Anyone with any ideas on this weird situation help me out? Already did the 3x10 min off/on deal to reset security but did t work. I did this a month ago. Push button start. No problems. I have an 06 Silverado 5.3. No codes. No security issues. Before and after the bypass. As far as the problem is concerned. I’m just curious myself but did by chance did you happen to check the air neutral safety switch? Because the weather all set up now rather than just the power to the starter in the ground because I basically need to crank the starter. What you have done here basically the same thing. Thanks I will appreciate it very much
My bad wasn’t getting notifications to the replies but I found the issue the pcm b kept blowing the fuse due to a bad fuel pump and by that fuse blowing the OBD reader wasn’t connecting
Call me dumb I don’t care but explain the wiring to me like I’m 5. So one wire from the relay post to the firewall. Do you splice that wire into the cab? Cause I only see one wire from the relay which is green and one wire off your firewall which is yellow…. So where does the second wire come from???????
Run the two wires into the cab - one from a good ground and the other that is attached to the starter relay ground post. Connect one wire to either side of the push button start prongs. Doesn't matter which wire goes on which prong. Circuit is only connected when you push the button. Hope that helps.

Good job, what I did was swap the fuse with the fuse ne to it and my 2005 started right up. Both fuses have the same ID numbers. I still have to buy new fuses..to replace the problem one.
Fuse "next" to it...
I checked a bunch of my fuses. That was the first thing I did and it wasn’t my problem…. Glad your issue just needed some new fuses!!✌️✌️
Man, my truck started doing the same thing a couple weeks ago. If it's above 20°F it's fine. Below that, does this. I'm at a loss.
Poor terminal contact or bad solder joint is usually evident with temperature fluctuations. I'll be fighting one tomorrow.

Hey there, so we got a 04 Sierra 4x4 and switched out the Neutral safety switch. What a pain in the ass..
so-After finally getting this thing on.. no crank over
Long story short-
Watched your video-
Trying the fuse made the engine start but not officially crank all the way over
Going to try the park neutral switch and see what’s up.
This has been a nightmare.
Any other suggestions would be HELPFUL. 4 days in.

I see you grounded it to the fire Wall but where are you getting your power from? On the push start
The lack of ground is the problem I had. Once I completed the ground w the push button I had plenty of positive power.
Which wire from ground at fuse box? I’m guessing run ground from post to body then ground in cab to switch on one terminal then other terminal grounded?
Thank you Todd great solution
Mine started after doing that and after it wouldn’t work again what should I do?

How did you ground and wire from the box to the ground and through to the cab sir.
Did u figure out your problem?
What if my ignition fuse pops everytime I replace and it go to start up?
The green wire is tied around the top left prong? And where does that wire go to?
Which would be #86? I have to bridge mine on #87 prong and then i touch the battery and it starts
Does everything operate like it should? Because yesterday I did the wire to relay starter method so I could drive and the a/c wasn’t working and there was a big power loss from the engine.
I did not have that problem. Truck is still running w push button.

On my 96 k1500 I’m getting 12.6 volts on only one of the posts for the starter relay. The other 3 posts read 0, what should I do?
That’s quite older than mine. I would start by finding your grounds on the vehicle and cleaning them up. Best I can do. ✌️
Thanks. I'll add a push button too. I got same problem. When starting the starter doesn't engage. No ground on starter relay coil.
Have you tried the GM computer relearn procedure? Some of your problems are similiar.

I have new starter new alternator new battery new ignition switch mabye the pcm? Ive checked my fuses all seem to be working fine i used to be able to start the truck once in a while but now it doesn’t want to start at all
Sorry for the late reply. You likely have multiple problems BUT if u are in the rust belt start by cleaning up the 2 grounds by the driver door on the frame. Grounds problem can cause multiple issues….
did you fix the issue? or find out the issue

Same with mine it only turns on when I jump start it! :/
If your battery checks out Ok then start chasing ground connections….. THAT will drive you insane….. Good Luck!!!!!!
Did you check the grounds if it was the problem
@@slicksloth_416 battery issues would be my guess - or bad/rusty grounds
@@toddrabb1892 engine grounds are good I yet to check body grounds on the frame
I will update if the push button start fails but so far it’s been an “easy” solution.. good luck!
It appears to be an effective solution however, is that still working after about 3 years? Thanks.
Yes it is!!! My son is still driving the rust bucket… other issues BUT it is still a push button start!!

Sorry, haven’t checked my comments in too long.. Let me know if u got your truck running. Maybe it will help someone else.
Same issue. Please let me know
So I had a key made at Walmart just to be a door key… well it turns out that somehow it started my truck so I have been using that key for a week now w/o any problems. Change relay, tried jumping the hot to battery, both NOTHING! I tried the ground I ran to chassis ground it just clicks the relay everytime i touch ground. Will not start doing any of this. So is my starter bad??
What happens when you try to jump start and turn the key? Also, have you tested the voltage in your battery?
Did u figure it out ?

You could have just jumped 87 to 30 on the relay locations on the block. No need to run it all the way to the battery but this way works too. If you are driving you did it right... 😂. I'm in MI too. I feel your pain with rust
I tried what you daid about crossing over 87-30 doesn't work it by passing ignition and starter continues to wind
I did this a month ago. Push button start. No problems. I have an 06 Silverado 5.3. No codes. No security issues. Before and after the bypass.
As far as the problem is concerned. It can be only 1 of 2 things. That ground to the ECM is broken or loose or the ECM is bad even thou there are no codes on the scanner.

How did you connect the push start ?
Used a 2 pair 12g wire. Grounded one wire to the firewall, ran that same wire into the cab and connected to one post of pushbutton. Another wire goes from the other push button post to the ground post on the starter relay. Hope that makes sense.

Not sure what u are asking. Watch the video again and read the comments and my replies. Let me know if u have other questions. ✌️
I’m just curious myself but did by chance did you happen to check the air neutral safety switch? Because the weather all set up now rather than just the power to the starter in the ground because I basically need to crank the starter. What you have done here basically the same thing. They go through the BCM in the BCM has certain checkpoints and if one of those don’t clear then it removes a sorce to the starter via the relay.
I didn’t check that. Two shops didn’t want to mess w it so I did... This was my solution that is still working fine.
I have a 2004 2500 and it wont start after we knocked down the dash board after we put it back it wouldent start or crack. After that the yellow pedlock light came on and it wount start or carank what could it be
That's likely the anti-theft system. There is a way to reset it. I can't remember right off hand. Google can solve that one. I tried that on this truck also but it wasn't my problem.
I have this same problem, but then when it down finally start after letting it sit it starts up but then sometimes won’t go over 1000rpm and moves super slow any idea on why that is?
You're in limp mode. Truck goes automatic into low gear because it's sensing "imminent demise" for some reason.
You think there would have been a recall for this common problem.
Wait you took the starter to shop and it was bad and you put it back in?
Yup - it was AFTER the starter was replaced that this issue began.
these old GM's have all kinds of grounding issues. my 04 avalanche had a bad ground that caused it to just shit itself while driving down a back road (I thought it was a fuel pump), but it was just the ground for the spark coils. damn rust buckets.
Kinda did this to my 92 gmc. In addition spliced a hot wire to a start button and to the solenoid incase something popped in the OEM starter wiring. Nice job!
04 2500 6.0 mine only does it occasionally, and when I eat mad at it and yell “start you piece of shit” it always starts after that.

Hi Todd, guys, I did wire a on/off button, and every time the switch gets to on, it engages the starter, it doesn't matter how I wire that button, as long as the ground on the relay is "grounded", it engages the starter and won't turn off till I turn the key off, any ideas? Thanks I will appreciate it very much
On my comment before, I meant every time the key turns to on position, the starter engages, not even on the crank position,
My bad wasn’t getting notifications to the replies but I found the issue the pcm b kept blowing the fuse due to a bad fuel pump and by that fuse blowing the OBD reader wasn’t connecting

Call me dumb I don’t care but explain the wiring to me like I’m 5. So one wire from the relay post to the firewall. Do you splice that wire into the cab? I did the same but the left and right signals don't work, why?
Same problem here
well done can jou show as diagram
Ok so how did u hook up the button tho??
Run the two wires into the cab - one from a good ground and the other that is attached to the starter relay ground post. Connect one wire to either side of the push button start prongs. Doesn't matter which wire goes on which prong. Circuit is only connected when you push the button. Hope that helps.
