I listened to Gorillaz for quite some time before I recently got to know the faces behind the band. For me they did their job well. Their music works without them. The fact that it helps to be popular to promote new music is obvious. But it never felt like the Gorillaz has a connection to Damon. (Google for Gorillaz and there are 2 Damon pics on the first two pages vs 40 of Gorillaz). So while it helped to get the music out, it's not like Damon took the spotlight. That was one of the key features of Gorillaz and they executed it very well.
THIS is one of your best and most truthful rants..I have been telling my guitarist friends this type of stuff for years!! They all concern themselves with perfect techniques and speed and I tell them that nobody cares...except the 3 guitarists that are in the crowd.. play a song with great hooks that people can sing along with and tap their foot to... it will go a lot further...
Bam. Absolute truth. You can mix it up for sure and still sound great. But I mean...ok when I first started playing guitar I was little and was amazed by Steve Vai. Dude is clearly a great guitarist. But I can't listen to a full recording of it anymore. And if you play something like that for the average person they'll go "Wow this guy is amazing." And then 30 seconds later they'll turn it off and walk away.
There's truth to this, but there's other reasons I'm into developing speed and technique. For me it's partly just the personal satisfaction, I don't even show off my skills much and when I do, I can't help but feel self-conscious no matter how good I am. Hard to explain, it's kinda cool wowing people with your guitar playing, but sometimes I don't like how people look at you differently. Like in college, others looked at me as some musical genius guitar god, it can make it harder to relate to people like anyone else. For that and other reasons I stopped playing for 9 years. Now, I don't care as much about that and adults aren't as likely to think of you as a god on guitar, and I've realized the huge mental benefit of it, to keep improving and going out of you comfort zone. Back in HS and college, it was harder to improve speed and technique like I wanted to, and not sacrifice some creativity and things like that. Now I realize how I can practice as efficiently as possible to maximize developing speed and technicality, while not sacrificing feel and creativity. Still takes SOME sacrifice outside of guitar though, just because it does take some time, but not the 4-6 hours a day back in HS, where I spent NONE of that time working on feel and improvising. Now it's maybe 1-2 hours devoted to developing technique, and not even every day.
The meritocracy thing is true, but good looks are not the only defining factor in getting more views. It think it's more of a package thing than a single-element thing. As opposed to the guitarist guy, that girl gets more views not only because she looks hot, but ALSO because: 1. She performs very popular songs; the other guy does shredding, which isn't a popular thing at all. 2. She SINGS. Singers get much more attention than any other instrumentist, no matter the type of music. She offers a more attractive PACKAGE to the masses.
I've been teaching guitar for 26 years, and have had 1000's of students. I don't care what level you are everyone deserves the best instrument they can get for the obvious reasons. Love your channel Glen !
I beg to disagree. You obviously need something workable while you are studying the craft, but buying an expensive, high-quality guitar(i know that's not always the case, but often - it is) is ultimately a waste of money, if you haven't been serious enough and got to a good level.

As for ugly dudes in metal getting recognition, I have to hand it to Devin Townsend for just being a crazy fucker. I think that he's always kind of had the "we're ugly and fuck you we're just going to milk that" factor, but once Devy ended Strapping Young Lad and started the whole Ziltoid and "Devin Townsend Project" thing and just ran with it, he's gotten so much more popular than ever, just for the amount of sheer wackiness and imagination he puts into it. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but there's no denying that dude knows how to amass an audience for just being as over-the-top and larger-than-life as possible.
But that slick shiny head tho! Nah nah, kidding kidding. I totally dig what you're saying. I think the whole "we're ugly" thing is just one of Devy's running jokes and he's used his "distinctive" appearance to his advantage; almost as much as the wet/dry mix on his reverb plugin. :D
I remember 7 or 8 years ago I was selling a very old Epiphone acoustic guitar which I got for a few bucks to a friend of mine who owned a vintage guitar store...Turned out the guitar was the same Paul McCartney played 'Yesterday' on and was worth a little fortune. So my friend went 'Dude I've been looking for one of these for years! I'll trade anything from the store for it'. I saw that Les Paul R9 hanging but decided I didn't deserve such a guitar because I was just some idiot playing in a garage with his friends every saturday afternoon... But friend told me 'Who gives a shit, get it if you like it!' ... and so I did, and I've been enjoying that wonderful Les Paul ever since. Fuck meritocracy :)
Yup. I learned this very early in my career. I was studying with a phenomenal guitar teacher as a 20 something and it seemed odd that I was gigging all over and he was mostly teaching. He explained that it was partly by choice but also the fact that music business has become more perception than reality and he didn't believe he fit in. He could play circles around me but was very generous with his knowledge. He prepared me for the cold world of the biz and now I find myself in his same exact position, mostly teaching youngsters who have limited knowledge/experience but seem to get most of the opportunities. The way I look at it, hopefully I can instill some knowledge and make the future of music brighter. Most of this came as little to no surprise to me. As a fledgling guitarist, more people would respond if I played a Ramones or Kiss riff rather than a Rush riff.

But if people are more prepared to listen to basic open chords performed by someone with giant tits, than appreciate a band like Meshuggah because the Visual aspect is less appealing, then, ultimately that is their own loss. Good, you shouldn't judge her. It doesn't change the fact that being physically attractive will absolutely boost your social media accounts, and more so if you're female. People are free to do as they please, and for many people, the money/fame/attention pleases them greatly. 'Privileges' are a normal part of life and apply to women as well.

You can also achieve a good level of TH-cam success as a musician without ever showing your face. I've seen lots of successful TH-cam musicians whose cameras only point to their instrument. That way, the viewer can focus on the skills and music. At the top of my head are the channels of Animenz and adrisaurus.

I have made peace with the fact that there will be people much younger than me but more talented than my heroes. Music isn't a talent competition, and the most complex and technical song is not for sure going to be the best one; there's more depth to it than that. This is why more people look up to people like Kurt Cobain than someone like Yngwie; sometimes less is more and tastefullness appeals to people more than skill. Just being unique and being creative is the most fufilling and probably the most productive thing you can do when it comes to music. If you wanna make millions playing music, yeah you gotta be a model too now for that extra dimension of marketing appeal. Of course there will always be a taste for complex music as well, and frankly, it's more fun to write and play (at least for me).

I think what also helps with Jess' videos is that she's also singing. Instrumentals don't seem to do as well as videos of performers who sing. That's not to diminish the accomplishments of either, but I think people find vocal performances to be more palatable than instrumentals only
She definitely plays the thumbnail game to her advantage. I think that's what everybody gets at when they're saying she has "female privilege." Her talent is what keeps our attention, but she knows a lot of male viewers are going to click on her videos if she poses for her thumbnails just right

Listening with your eyes has actually changed the way people play guitar. A lot of guitar players today want to be able to play up and down the neck of the guitar. They spend lots of time learning the same scale in many positions. If you go back to the 70s a lot of guitar players don't use that many positions. Machine gun by Hendrix is one of the most insane solos I have ever heard, and most of it is the basic pentatonic scale you learned in your first guitar lesson. If you go back even further the Mickey Baker Jazz method published in 1959 teaches riffs in only two positions. Playing all over the neck looks cool, yet most of the guitarist who only use a few positions end up having more ideas. They have less to worry about. I am not judging. I am guilty of this as well being a part of this new generation of guitar players. I am not saying this is good or bad, just different. Thanks for the video. You have many great points.
I subbed at 2:00 mins in, because you are absolutely right. You know what I HATE the most about her viewers? Shes got an Acoustic guitar with grime layers on it so thick that you can see where the only polishing the fretboard gets is from fingerslips/slides, and people will comment saying "Wow that guitar neck, shows so much stress and wear from years and years of playing." Making up excuses for her not taking all of her strings off and deep cleaning and conditioning her fretboard from time to time. Yes she is a great performer as well, I will say that.
It's not just aesthetic but also what you play. A guy who shreds like a god might not have the creative mind to properly use those great abilities. A good example of great abilities not being that related making good music is Jack White. He's not a great guitar player and kind of a one trick pony but he's got a very unique style and has made some really great music. But you're very right on one thing and that's something I've thought for a while - talent is everywhere. If you're a musician on the road, on each town you play there'll be at least a few great guitarists and probably ones that can outplay you. The question is, can they make better music, or content? Who cares who can play the best if nothing that you play sounds all that good or unique. That makes you a good player and performer but because that's not uncommon it holds no real value. It's that combined with the ability to stand out and make good music that's important, combined with an amount of luck.
The thing is that musicians don't realise that people listen with their eyes too and this can be a blessing in disguise! Give a good stage performance and people won't even notice that you're not pitch perfect,or missed a note and even if they notice,they'll be forgiving,because they had a good time! I got first hand experience-as Jack of all trades in numerous bands,I was always making mistakes and people wouldn't give a sh§t....

Take a look at Megadeth - Chris Broedrick probably had more technical knowledge than any other guitarist to play in the band. He was a machine. BUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.......his solos were mediorce and he couldn't emulate what the others (Friedman and Poland mainly) could do. Friedman used exotic scales, Poland had that hand thing allowing him to do great bends, a jazz background, drugs and a rivalry with 1980s Mustaine (they once destroyed a toilet in a fight, so yeah). Talented or not, you don't have that. So write some great, passionate, original material, and you will get what you think you deserve. Showing the BPM you can shred at, we've seen. Its boring.
Goabnb94 I can think of one solo that blew anything I'd heard previously out of the water by him though. 1320 was absolutely insane, it was shred to it's absolute limits and I loved that about it.
Whether we accept it or not, entertainment is a total package, not only you have to play and sing good, you have to look good too. You don't need to look like Harry Styles or Selena Gomez, you just have to present yourself well.
You can play every scale there is and technique , what it really boils down to is can you write a good song. I think Steve Via and Marty Friedman are perfect examples of that.

Music IS a meritocracy. But the relevant ability is not technical virtuosity. Like any art form music communicates and connects with an audience and that does not necessarily require a lot of technical ability. I've never gotten into any band because the musicians were great at playing their instruments - the bands I've enjoyed always had something to say and adequate skills to say it. That's all it takes. Some people put the carriage before the horse and write music that is technically hard for the sole purpose of showing the world they can perform it (and I do understand the appeal. I've been one of these people from time to time. But I can usually recognize pieces which are pointless wankery before I make them public). One of the differences between Hiroaki Tagawa and Jess Greenberg is that she's doing cover versions of songs that are already great. He isn't. Make that reason number 4 people listen to her more - her top 3 videos are Highway to Hell, Seven Nation Army and Under The Bridge. Tagawa has shred videos with no musical context and a couple of videos with a band that after a few minutes made me listen to Living Colour, because they have actual songs to go with a guitarist that can shred and a funky rhythm section, rather than 9 minute pieces that go nowhere and include a bass solo each...
I know what you mean, producing a piece of art is not just one skill, not just the technical one, and you can produce a great piece of art with 3 chords, or even no chords, maybe they are an electronic artist, or whatever... But its still not a meritocracy, things might be subejctive, but how do you justify for example Ed Sheeran holding so many top chart positions? Even if he's good, then how is he THAT good to hold all those positions...Its a monopoly for sure, and that's not an argument that is being snobbish about taste at all, that's an argument that how the hell when music is so diverse does just one artist dominate EVERYTHING....because exposure, that's why, he's blasted on every radio station and in every shop and in social media because someone paid for that, and all the people who don't really care about music go out and say 'meh its ok maybe I'm kinda used to it being shoved down my throat now, i'll buy it from Tesco'.
I suppose the main reason is that these days the singles charts aren't that anymore. They are based on the sales of singles, but more importantly downloads and streams. Before these digital distribution channels were in effect, you would have albums that charted, but nobody would have 14 singles on the market - that's simply not how music was released. Take the 3 best selling albums in the US: Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin IV and Thriller. Only the latter had any really successful singles, and these were released over the course of 15 months. If people hadn't bought them as albums, but streamed them, they would have dominated the charts when they got released in the same way (on the same note check the current Rock/Metal Charts - Pink Floyd has 4 of the top 40 albums, as has Nirvana, Metallica have 3, like Green Day, AC/DC and GNR have 2 each. The newest song on the Top 10 Rock/Metal singles is Disturbed "Sound of Silence", while Sweet Child of Mine is at the top spot and there are no less than 2 entries each for Queen and AC/DC). On the other hand if you check the pure physical, Ed Sheeran isn't anywhere near to that type of dominance (The reissue of the Buzzcocks first EP Spiral Scratch is in the top 10 in the UK right now!).

Nah, more like Joe Pass or Wes Montgomery. But even then, I think those guys just kind of had "it". There's also a lot of natural talent that comes into play that most people will never achieve.
I disagree that you NEED to look good or have crazy presentation. That's if you want width, not *DEPTH*. Large fanbase, yes, but is that fanbase loyal and are they invested in who you are as a person and what you're all about?
You're right, personality, identity/background, and songwriting are also important factors, however, you're kidding yourself if you believe skill will give you a solid and loyal fanbase. Not everyone appreciates skill.

With TH-cam you have to become a video production expert, a stylist, an art director, a lighting tech, a sound engineer and above all, a marketing God. Few will, most wont. People become very pessimistic when this subject is brought up, but it is 100% true. It is important to remember that the goal is to find what you are already good at that makes you unique. Many superstars were already beautiful before fame, or they already had entertaining personalities, or unique viewpoints. All they did was learn how to harness their gift to unleash their full potential (also, they put in a ton of hard work). If you weren't born beautiful, don't cry or call the world unfair. Instead, find your own gift and apply it.
I think you missed two really important points, and the first one is, at least to me, is a dealbreaker, weather there are boobs involved or not: ORIGINALITY. Steely Dan may have been a bunch of ugly dudes, but THAT music, man. Sadly the average current musician only wants to become famous from their living rooms or bedrooms, playing covers. Second. I am aware of many players where I live that shred for their cameras, and can play any song by Eric Johnson or Petrucci, but put them in a band, or ask them to improvise, and they fall apart. If I wanna see boobs, I open Pornhub, when looking for guitar players, I always strive for substance over looks, bu that's just me, I'm guess I'm old.
I prefer improvisation and originality in music too. But the whole point of this vid is that people like us are a minority among listeners and musicians and that's why the people we like are always going to be less popular. Screaming Headless Torsos in my opinion created one of the best albums evar. But they were never going to climb the pop charts.

I'll always pick substance as well, I'll take looking at Victor Wooten's slightly overweight but monstrously talented ass, over any chick with an ok amount of talent but massive jugs. That being said, looks will always prevail on TH-cam. However, the music space has it easy when it comes to this, it isn't as much of a problem here as it is in other spaces. My other hobby, gaming, is filled to the brim with titty streamers and content creators that bank on preteens/teens with out of control hormones. It's just the sad reality of a space where anyone can make anything with no filter.

If you wanna earn money by working in music industry it doesn't necessarily have to be a band. Nevertheless, if your stuff's good you'll always find an audience. It's not about how fucking awesome you play, it's about writing good music.

I listened to Gorillaz for quite some time before I recently got to know the faces behind the band. For me they did their job well. Their music works without them.
The fact that it helps to be popular to promote new music is obvious. But it never felt like the Gorillaz has a connection to Damon. (Google for Gorillaz and there are 2 Damon pics on the first two pages vs 40 of Gorillaz). So while it helped to get the music out, it's not like Damon took the spotlight. That was one of the key features of Gorillaz and they executed it very well.
THIS is one of your best and most truthful rants..I have been telling my guitarist friends this type of stuff for years!! They all concern themselves with perfect techniques and speed and I tell them that nobody cares...except the 3 guitarists that are in the crowd.. play a song with great hooks that people can sing along with and tap their foot to... it will go a lot further...
Bam. Absolute truth. You can mix it up for sure and still sound great. But I mean...ok when I first started playing guitar I was little and was amazed by Steve Vai. Dude is clearly a great guitarist. But I can't listen to a full recording of it anymore. And if you play something like that for the average person they'll go "Wow this guy is amazing." And then 30 seconds later they'll turn it off and walk away.
There's truth to this, but there's other reasons I'm into developing speed and technique. For me it's partly just the personal satisfaction, I don't even show off my skills much and when I do, I can't help but feel self-conscious no matter how good I am. Hard to explain, it's kinda cool wowing people with your guitar playing, but sometimes I don't like how people look at you differently. Like in college, others looked at me as some musical genius guitar god, it can make it harder to relate to people like anyone else. For that and other reasons I stopped playing for 9 years.
Now, I don't care as much about that and adults aren't as likely to think of you as a god on guitar, and I've realized the huge mental benefit of it, to keep improving and going out of you comfort zone. Back in HS and college, it was harder to improve speed and technique like I wanted to, and not sacrifice some creativity and things like that. Now I realize how I can practice as efficiently as possible to maximize developing speed and technicality, while not sacrificing feel and creativity. Still takes SOME sacrifice outside of guitar though, just because it does take some time, but not the 4-6 hours a day back in HS, where I spent NONE of that time working on feel and improvising. Now it's maybe 1-2 hours devoted to developing technique, and not even every day.
The meritocracy thing is true, but good looks are not the only defining factor in getting more views. It think it's more of a package thing than a single-element thing. As opposed to the guitarist guy, that girl gets more views not only because she looks hot, but ALSO because: 1. She performs very popular songs; the other guy does shredding, which isn't a popular thing at all. 2. She SINGS. Singers get much more attention than any other instrumentist, no matter the type of music. She offers a more attractive PACKAGE to the masses.
She uses what mainstream which gives a HUGE boost in views.Its what everyone should be doing to stay relevant.Sad but that's how it works.

I beg to disagree. You obviously need something workable while you are studying the craft, but buying an expensive, high-quality guitar(i know that's not always the case, but often - it is) is ultimately a waste of money, if you haven't been serious enough and got to a good level.

As for ugly dudes in metal getting recognition, I have to hand it to Devin Townsend for just being a crazy fucker. I think that he's always kind of had the "we're ugly and fuck you we're just going to milk that" factor, but once Devy ended Strapping Young Lad and started the whole Ziltoid and "Devin Townsend Project" thing and just ran with it, he's gotten so much more popular than ever, just for the amount of sheer wackiness and imagination he puts into it. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but there's no denying that dude knows how to amass an audience for just being as over-the-top and larger-than-life as possible.

So my friend went 'Dude I've been looking for one of these for years! I'll trade anything from the store for it'.
I saw that Les Paul R9 hanging but decided I didn't deserve such a guitar because I was just some idiot playing in a garage with his friends every saturday afternoon...

Yup. I learned this very early in my career. I was studying with a phenomenal guitar teacher as a 20 something and it seemed odd that I was gigging all over and he was mostly teaching. He explained that it was partly by choice but also the fact that music business has become more perception than reality and he didn't believe he fit in. He could play circles around me but was very generous with his knowledge. He prepared me for the cold world of the biz and now I find myself in his same exact position, mostly teaching youngsters who have limited knowledge/experience but seem to get most of the opportunities. The way I look at it, hopefully I can instill some knowledge and make the future of music brighter. Most of this came as little to no surprise to me. As a fledgling guitarist, more people would respond if I played a Ramones or Kiss riff rather than a Rush riff.
Tbh, I'm not really a fan of that chick guitarist, I never got behind her.

I agree with your fundamental point. I wouldn't go so far as to say I'd smash her guitar. But I agree, music is music. It is an audible media not a visual one. But if people are more prepared to listen to basic open chords performed by someone with giant tits, than appreciate a band like Meshuggah because the Visual aspect is less appealing, then, ultimately that is their own loss.

And how does it make you feel that Glenn mentioned it in the context of people crying over it? As he also said in the video, humans are built to fuck. There is no sexual privilege when both parties want the same thing (hence bringing up Bieber). Female privilege is a term invented by underfucked cave trolls as an out-of-context response to "male privilege" which is a very real thing in a purely economic sense.
In the context of gaining TH-cam popularity, it is a significant (unearned) advantage -- ie. privilege.
Good, you shouldn't judge her. It doesn't change the fact that being physically attractive will absolutely boost your social media accounts, and more so if you're female. People are free to do as they please, and for many people, the money/fame/attention pleases them greatly. 'Privileges' are a normal part of life and apply to women as well.

You can also achieve a good level of TH-cam success as a musician without ever showing your face. I've seen lots of successful TH-cam musicians whose cameras only point to their instrument. I said fuck it and became a doctor so I could support my music habit. The only one I have to please is me
I have made peace with the fact that there will be people much younger than me but more talented than my heroes. Music isn't a talent competition, and the most complex and technical song is not for sure going to be the best one; there's more depth to it than that. This is why more people look up to people like Kurt Cobain than someone like Yngwie; sometimes less is more and tastefullness appeals to people more than skill.
Just being unique and being creative is the most fufilling and probably the most productive thing you can do when it comes to music. If you wanna make millions playing music, yeah you gotta be a model too now for that extra dimension of marketing appeal. Of course there will always be a taste for complex music as well, and frankly, it's more fun to write and play (at least for me).

1) He was a douche bag junkie-turd who by some miracle hit the scene at a time when even top models had to look like douche bag junkie turds!

I think what also helps with Jess' videos is that she's also singing. Instrumentals don't seem to do as well as videos of performers who sing. That's not to diminish the accomplishments of either, but I think people find vocal performances to be more palatable than instrumentals only

Listening with your eyes has actually changed the way people play guitar. A lot of guitar players today want to be able to play up and down the neck of the guitar. They spend lots of time learning the same scale in many positions. If you go back to the 70s a lot of guitar players don't use that many positions. Machine gun by Hendrix is one of the most insane solos I have ever heard, and most of it is the basic pentatonic scale you learned in your first guitar lesson. If you go back even further the Mickey Baker Jazz method published in 1959 teaches riffs in only two positions. Playing all over the neck looks cool, yet most of the guitarist who only use a few positions end up having more ideas. They have less to worry about. I am not judging. I am guilty of this as well being a part of this new generation of guitar players. I am not saying this is good or bad, just different. Thanks for the video. You have many great points.
I subbed at 2:00 mins in, because you are absolutely right. You know what I HATE the most about her viewers? Shes got an Acoustic guitar with grime layers on it so thick that you can see where the only polishing the fretboard gets is from fingerslips/slides, and people will comment saying "Wow that guitar neck, shows so much stress and wear from years and years of playing." Making up excuses for her not taking all of her strings off and deep cleaning and conditioning her fretboard from time to time. Yes she is a great performer as well, I will say that.
It's not just aesthetic but also what you play. A guy who shreds like a god might not have the creative mind to properly use those great abilities. A good example of great abilities not being that related making good music is Jack White. He's not a great guitar player and kind of a one trick pony but he's got a very unique style and has made some really great music.
But you're very right on one thing and that's something I've thought for a while - talent is everywhere. If you're a musician on the road, on each town you play there'll be at least a few great guitarists and probably ones that can outplay you. The question is, can they make better music, or content? Who cares who can play the best if nothing that you play sounds all that good or unique. That makes you a good player and performer but because that's not uncommon it holds no real value. It's that combined with the ability to stand out and make good music that's important, combined with an amount of luck.
The thing is that musicians don't realise that people listen with their eyes too and this can be a blessing in disguise!
Give a good stage performance and people won't even notice that you're not pitch perfect,or missed a note and even if they notice,they'll be forgiving,because they had a good time!

Take a look at Megadeth - Chris Broedrick probably had more technical knowledge than any other guitarist to play in the band. He was a machine. BUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.......his solos were mediorce and he couldn't emulate what the others (Friedman and Poland mainly) could do. Friedman used exotic scales, Poland had that hand thing allowing him to do great bends, a jazz background, drugs and a rivalry with 1980s Mustaine (they once destroyed a toilet in a fight, so yeah). Talented or not, you don't have that. So write some great, passionate, original material, and you will get what you think you deserve. Showing the BPM you can shred at, we've seen. Its boring.

Whether we accept it or not, entertainment is a total package, not only you have to play and sing good, you have to look good too. You don't need to look like Harry Styles or Selena Gomez, you just have to present yourself well.
You can play every scale there is and technique , what it really boils down to is can you write a good song. I think Steve Via and Marty Friedman are perfect examples of that.

Music IS a meritocracy. But the relevant ability is not technical virtuosity. Like any art form music communicates and connects with an audience and that does not necessarily require a lot of technical ability. I've never gotten into any band because the musicians were great at playing their instruments - the bands I've enjoyed always had something to say and adequate skills to say it. That's all it takes. Some people put the carriage before the horse and write music that is technically hard for the sole purpose of showing the world they can perform it (and I do understand the appeal. I've been one of these people from time to time. But I can usually recognize pieces which are pointless wankery before I make them public). One of the differences between Hiroaki Tagawa and Jess Greenberg is that she's doing cover versions of songs that are already great. He isn't. Make that reason number 4 people listen to her more - her top 3 videos are Highway to Hell, Seven Nation Army and Under The Bridge. Tagawa has shred videos with no musical context and a couple of videos with a band that after a few minutes made me listen to Living Colour, because they have actual songs to go with a guitarist that can shred and a funky rhythm section, rather than 9 minute pieces that go nowhere and include a bass solo each...
I know what you mean, producing a piece of art is not just one skill, not just the technical one, and you can produce a great piece of art with 3 chords, or even no chords, maybe they are an electronic artist, or whatever...
But its still not a meritocracy, things might be subejctive, but how do you justify for example Ed Sheeran holding so many top chart positions? Even if he's good, then how is he THAT good to hold all those positions...Its a monopoly for sure, and that's not an argument that is being snobbish about taste at all, that's an argument that how the hell when music is so diverse does just one artist dominate EVERYTHING....because exposure, that's why, he's blasted on every radio station and in every shop and in social media because someone paid for that, and all the people who don't really care about music go out and say 'meh its ok maybe I'm kinda used to it being shoved down my throat now, i'll buy it from Tesco'.
I suppose the main reason is that these days the singles charts aren't that anymore. They are based on the sales of singles, but more importantly downloads and streams. Before these digital distribution channels were in effect, you would have albums that charted, but nobody would have 14 singles on the market - that's simply not how music was released. Take the 3 best selling albums in the US: Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin IV and Thriller. Only the latter had any really successful singles, and these were released over the course of 15 months. If people hadn't bought them as albums, but streamed them, they would have dominated the charts when they got released in the same way (on the same note check the current Rock/Metal Charts - Pink Floyd has 4 of the top 40 albums, as has Nirvana, Metallica have 3, like Green Day, AC/DC and GNR have 2 each. AlphaLemming My jaw drops everytime i see him playing, not because of the sound which is comming from the guitar, but how fast his fingers moves because honestly... i've never heard a single memorable thing from him.
Nah, more like Joe Pass or Wes Montgomery. But even then, I think those guys just kind of had "it". There's also a lot of natural talent that comes into play that most people will never achieve.

That's if you want width, not *DEPTH*. Large fanbase, yes, but is that fanbase loyal and are they invested in who you are as a person and what you're all about?
You're right, personality, identity/background, and songwriting are also important factors, however, you're kidding yourself if you believe skill will give you a solid and loyal fanbase. Not everyone appreciates skill.

People become very pessimistic when this subject is brought up, but it is 100% true. It is important to remember that the goal is to find what you are already good at that makes you unique. Many superstars were already beautiful before fame, or they already had entertaining personalities, or unique viewpoints. All they did was learn how to harness their gift to unleash their full potential (also, they put in a ton of hard work). If you weren't born beautiful, don't cry or call the world unfair. Instead, find your own gift and apply it.
I think you missed two really important points, and the first one is, at least to me, is a dealbreaker, weather there are boobs involved or not: ORIGINALITY. Steely Dan may have been a bunch of ugly dudes, but THAT music, man. Sadly the average current musician only wants to become famous from their living rooms or bedrooms, playing covers. Second. I am aware of many players where I live that shred for their cameras, and can play any song by Eric Johnson or Petrucci, but put them in a band, or ask them to improvise, and they fall apart. If I wanna see boobs, I open Pornhub, when looking for guitar players, I always strive for substance over looks, bu that's just me, I'm guess I'm old.

I prefer improvisation and originality in music too. But the whole point of this vid is that people like us are a minority among listeners and musicians and that's why the people we like are always going to be less popular. Screaming Headless Torsos in my opinion created one of the best albums evar. But they were never going to climb the pop charts.
+Gerry Blue. We are in the minority here. I'll always pick substance as well, I'll take looking at Victor Wooten's slightly overweight but monstrously talented ass, over any chick with an ok amount of talent but massive jugs. That being said, looks will always prevail on TH-cam. However, the music space has it easy when it comes to this, it isn't as much of a problem here as it is in other spaces. My other hobby, gaming, is filled to the brim with titty streamers and content creators that bank on preteens/teens with out of control hormones. It's just the sad reality of a space where anyone can make anything with no filter.

That's just something i had never considered. even if i dont like their content, i'd still want to see them succeed and make a living off youtube, because nobody makes youtube videos unless they love to do so, and doing what you love is a true blessing. Back in those days we would talk a bout the strumming of the guitar,the rolling of the drums;the technique used by the lead guitarist. Nowadays People would talk about what he is wearing,how he dance,how he moves,how he blink etc
If you wanna earn money by working in music industry it doesn't necessarily have to be a band. Nevertheless, if your stuff's good you'll always find an audience. It's not about how fucking awesome you play, it's about writing good music.
interesting and unexpected video. looks go into it of course, but more people will like simpler music as opposed to heavier/technical stuff anyway. of course bon jovi got more popular than sacred reich. this video could have been hours long because there's so much to the psychology and science behind music that makes people prefer more "accessible" music
