Really enjoyed this! Thank you so much for inviting me on! No matter how many times we hang out and geek out about Final Fantasy, I'm still left excited about the next time we do!
There is something special about grown men geeking out over their love for FF. Im 35 and i grew up in a post war Croatia so it was very uncommon to find a fellow gamer here at that time. I never met a person in my life that has played FF games and I never get to talk about them so channels like yours make me feel like I'm not crazy 😆. Great content guys, much love!
Yea I’m with FinalFanTV. I recommend prof noctis to people who are looking for an academic lens to help view and process the elements of these games. This channel is ridiculously special.
Love @FinalTV theories - so interesting. I have been a fan of FF7 for years, in particular Cloud who is always so unjustifiably misunderstood, so I really hope the devs deliver in part 3. Really enjoyed this!
Prof, it is really nice to watch your videos, sharing your thoughts, theories and experiences. You know how to describe each character with value and their importance for the story. Unfortunately, there's a lot of channels and yt users who simply put 'ship' above all the things, and you are not like this, you love the story, the development and care for the trilogy ending. That's what I was looking forward, great conversations and nice gameplays. Really, thank you for bring these contents.
Also, binding together with the thoughts about loss and acceptance. Once Cloud and Tifa have had their moment and forged new memories together whilst reconciling the past. They spend that night under the highwind while everyone else leaves to find there own reason to fight for the planet, their own reconciliation. I think this could be a great part similar to the trials in Rebirth each party member has a scene. Barret could take Marlene to Dynes grave. Yuffie could lay Sonon to rest with his sister in Wutai. Cid could drink tea with Shera, maybe even put the kettle on himself for a change. Vincent could muse in Lucretias cave. Reeve could put plans in place for rebuilding the slums after platefall. Nanaki could offer the Gi a way out, somethimg Seto never could.
Wonderful episode and I loved seeing FFTV be on! I tend to agree with what you and FFTV said regarding Sephiroth and his plans. It would be much more interesting if his end goal is not "bad" but instead the means he goes about getting to that goal is what is bad, or that his "good" goal has consequences Cloud cannot agree with. I know other content creators like to use Thanos as a good example of what Sephiroth could be, and that would be awesome. However, I can think of one better antagonist to model Sephiroth after. But hey maybe I'll do a video on that so I will keep it to myself lol. Great video!
The game that allows you traverse a massive map and fly (like the Highwind would be able to) is Xenoblade Chronicles X! It's getting a remaster in March of next year and it released in 2015. If it was done then I'm very excited to see how SE does the Highwind in part 3!
The final fantasy games are such an unexpectedly good game to play with younger siblings and nephews and nieces, I’m not a father yet but I’ll definitely play some of these games with them I played FF7 up until icicle inn with my nephews and they were so shockingly engaged the whole time. Of course you have to be mindful to “censor” certain parts or explain things that a kid wouldn’t normally get.
Another fun day in the class room. Like FinalFan says, I think we'll see the truth when Cloud comes to the point of acceptance. But what if this true scene of Aerith's death and Cloud setting her into the water is laced with Sephiroth killing Cloud's mother and throwing her into the fire? I wonder if Sephiroth lifted and threw her the same way he tried to kill Cloud at the reactor. What if Sephiroth flicked her blood in Cloud's face the same way he did Aerith's? 1:16 in, FinalFan talks about the backbone of VII being strengthened and these new elements giving us hope. I've got a thought on that. While I don't think these multiple worlds will last, something special and more unnoticed as already happened from them: Zack, (like Tifa and Aerith, and sooner or later Cloud) has established a bond with Marlene. What if Zack and Aerith being dead in the lifestream, Cloud and Tifa being alive in the real world, and this common bond they share, is turns out to be what saves Marlene's life? Who will be there to protect Marlene from the horrors of Shinra during Midgar Raid if Reeve is locked up, and Rufus is out of the picture? What if Cloud and Tifa are to save her physically, while Zack and Aerith are able to save her mentally, like by calling her into a dream so she doesn't witness the behavior and actions of Hojo, Heidegger, or Scarlet? If Hojo gets an inclination that Marlene is connected to Aerith, he might want to experiment on her. Or if Scarlet develops a psychotic grudge against Tifa because of Junon, threatening Marlene's safety would be the most effective means to hurt and manipulate her and Barret as Avalanche makes its final move on Shinra. Could Marlene be the glue that binds us to the original and shows us that this story, while dark, isn't as dark as we thought? About 1:17:30 in, what FinalFan says about Sephiroth creating a world to tempt Cloud with, I say definitely. And it will be up to Cloud to resist that. Also, the stuff about cherishing something and knowing that it won't be there forever, and contrasting that with the Gi: absolute gold. What he goes on a little later on being alone is the worst thing to do while handling grief, I'm thinking about the trap that Cloud will fall into before AC, and how we gets out of it during the events of the movie
Oof. You really should read lotr! Then read the silmarillion after. I think those books are right up your alley. Deep mythological and religious themes there.
I don't really enjoy the idea of just accepting Aerith and Zack's death, and not just because I want to see them revived. We've seen that all the time in media, a protagonist making the debatebly unbelievable choice of turning down the chance to have all their loved ones back. We're all grown here, we've played this game before and had those experiences, those only go away or are tainted if we let them be in our minds and hearts. Why can't Cloud reject both Sephiroth's warped designs but also the dogmatic Cetra's (and by extension Aerith) staunch refusal for anything besides the natural course the Planet takes? Or why can't we have both, something that is essentially already setting up at the end of this game? I think with the clear materia Cloud has a chance to make something new, something that we haven't explored, maybe an FF7 unaffected by Jenova's influence, where all this needless suffering didn't have to occur, not just for Cloud but the whole world. There's so many options to be had here and it's a shame seeing people tread the same old territory when we've grown as people and so can FF7 without throwing our past experiences away. PS: I think the Gi and the Black Materia are unnecessarily maligned. We only have the Cetra's word to take as gospel here, a group of people that mirror Shinra in the cyclical storytelling of FF7. I think people should keep in mind that materia require a user and intent, why shouldn't that apply to the Black Materia as much as it does the White? I guess what I'm saying both here and above, is that we don't have to take FF7 as black/white dichotomies.
I think this is a terrific comment. It's the same argument as Black mages vs. White mages. White mages aren't inherently good and black magic aren't inherently bad. Instead, white magic is more about creation and restoration of creational intent, whereas black magic is more destructive in nature, purging things that ought not exist. So whether creation or destruction, the intent is key. I think you've brought up a really interesting point here. And i'll try to incorporate this idea into some of my future lecture-plays and interviews. Well done.
Awesome comment. If there’s one thing the remake has truly emphasized imo, it’s that between black/white there is a ton of grey area - whether you’re viewing the actions of the party, Shinra, Turks, Cetra, Gi, planetologists, or especially Sephiroth. Would be quite nice to see a novel direction towards the ending if they can resolve everything compellingly. Considering the more complex portrayal of Sephiroth this time around alongside the edge of creation, expanded depiction of the lifestream, and empty materia, it’s exciting to think what they might have in store for part 3. Though I can’t imagine the backlash from the vocal purists on social media, who already seem viscerally averse to any change. Nomura’s recent interview also shed light on how they’re intending to stay true to the original. Whether that’s thematically or narratively (or both) we’ll just have to wait and see.
It would be interesting to see how people react to a kind of time loop situation. Like if time is reset, but Sephiroth never turns evil, and Jenova has no power. Cloud and Zack don't get injured and hence, are never experimented on. Cloud would just be some guy.
based on what Hamaguchi said in an interview months before Rebirth's release, we'll get all the famous and important scenes that we know from OG. Not only the scenes but the places too. We can expect some additions here and there, but nothing really different from OG, but more developed and meaningful. Last week, Kitase said that they won't betray the OG fans, but at the same time SE wants to give all FF7 fans a new and modern experience. This is what I have in mind.
I don’t want memories to be “messed with” I want them to be challenged in an interesting way. Simply put, I want Square to basically say “what if this concept or character wasn’t as simple as you remembered it?” An example would be to take a deeper look at someone like Barrett. In the OG, the party never confronts him about how he misrepresented the mission of avalanche, stating it was about the planet when it was clearly much more about revenge The OG never stops and makes you question this. It brings up the morality of Barret’s actions, like blowing up a reactor and forming an eco-terrorist group, but it never questions his intentions for all this, because it might make us see Barrett in a more negative light. I want them to dive into the “harsh realities”, something that makes you reconsider the OG plots of this stories. It’s very easy to mess this up, being subversive for the sake of subversion, some would criticize Rebirth of doing that with Aerith’s fate (still reserving judgement until we see the truth in Part 3). So to answer the question if Rebirth is messing with memories, I’d say the answer is a solid *maybe*, but that’s not inherently a bad thing, and it annoys me when people inherently consider it bad
Problem for me is ive just never cared about Cloud. My most enduring memory of him is finding iut he stole Zack's identity and having a mental breakdown while Tifa takes over party lead.
Really enjoyed this! Thank you so much for inviting me on! No matter how many times we hang out and geek out about Final Fantasy, I'm still left excited about the next time we do!
