I really wanna do this swap, but damn is it daunting. I could wire it to an standalone ecu like Megasquirt or Speeduino, but the stock mk4 ecu would provide so much reliability. I think Eurowise makes conversion harnesses though so I wouldn't have to deal with any of the hard work?
All depends on what you want out of it. Those aftermarket “plug and play” kits are usually just to start it and dont include a/c, cruise and a few others. So you if you want that stuff its not a bad option. I wanted everything to work and to know what exactly went where and did what so if I ever have an issue i can trace down anything.
@@SmithsEuro I have a Miata running on Speeduino (pretty much megasquirt) and the A/C is part of the chassis harness, so changing the ECU didn't effect it. Hoping the VW setup would be the same. A 1.8t swap for me I'd probably do a minimal shave and get rid of stuff like the MAF, N75 etc and run the bare minimum. I just finished your series and if I ever do this swap I don't have the guts to do the wiring you did haha
The chassis/engine harness are as one here as well, which is why you have to completely strip all the a/c/fan/headlights out of the mk3 harness then graft to the mk4 (which has all that grafted in but in mk4 form) so you have to cut it all out of that lol. Ive used ms1 a long time ago on my b3 vr6 turbo passat and used a/c but that was just making a plug and play in the vr6 that was already in the car. I have emu black for my mk1 vr6 turbo but haven’t had the time to wire it in yet.
@@SmithsEuro ah I was kind of thinking maybe the 97 2.0 wiring would have the A/C wiring separate from the car's ECU, where it could run with just the buttons from the HVAC and the standalone wouldn't have any part of the system besides rasing the idle with load
You dont have to run anything for standalone, you simply have the activation/ground whichever the stock ecu would have wire to it go to an aux on the standalone. So say if on the mk3 ecu pin 55 was that you would just keep that wire when merging the harnesses and pin it to the standalone ecu as it were a stock ecu (if that makes sense) But in my mk3 swap i used all the oem wiring and honestly I didn’t run the ecu a/c wire and ive had no issues ( i messed up and ran it with the cruise wiring) So even though its not plummed to the ecu, it still adjusts idle just fine based off the load of the engine since the mk4 ecu is relatively smart
Hi man, I know that this is an old video, but by any chance is there a way you can provide me with something that can help me wire the A/C stuff ( your schematic or notes you were taking )?
@@SmithsEuro Alright, thank you man. It should be much easier job than yours since I got lucky that mine mk3 came with 2 separated harnesses for engine and lights, etc.
About 10min in the video you show a paper on the fuse box and another paper with numbers and where they go to and from. where can i get those? i have 96 vw vento that i swap 1.8t in. and i only need gett the rrevlimiter and speedo to work becuse i have installade a maxxecu in my :)
i want to do a 1.8t bam swap but im worried about the wiring to the stock fuse box. also i have a question do the 1.8t need any custom mounts to fit ? and can i use the stock 1.8t trans?
Episode 2 covers the mounts. You have to modify the oem mounts slightly. 1.8t trans can work but you have to get the correct axle cups/shifter/hydraulic clutch conversion which all should be in episode 2 o believe. Go to the junkyard and pull an mk3 wiring harness to get familiar with it and can have 2 attempts if you are worried about it.
@@SmithsEuro oki tanks i have the 02j trans that came with 1.8t from golf mk4 gti and the shiftbox with mounts and cables. how did you get the speedometer to work? you forget to explain that in the video? many thanks and help //Fredrik
If its an mk3 the speedo is the same functionally but different plug. You can put the 02a speedo (rectangle plug) into the 02j trans Or use the 02j (D shape plug) speedo and just change the plug
Dang man.. this seems so tedious and difficult.. props to you for getting it done. 👍

Use all oem mk3 stuff
Nothing to wire in.
Just have to spend forever cutting it out of the mk3 harness along with the lights
