I've always hated painting calipers, but luckily most of them were brand new, makes the job a little easier. Always looks nice when you can smooth and and clean up all the casting marks.
I paint the calipers on every brake job i do. I think it makes the job look more professional. I also apply brake lube behind the pad clips. It stops rust from building up and pinching the pads. I find that a lot of people look through the wheels to see if there are new parts installed and the painted calipers helps them think they got their money's worth.
This is by far the best Calipar painting vid on the net, of all the vids on here the one thing that made painting my calipers much easier this time from your youtube video was purchasing a vechicle hoist, the total cost was just over 6 thousand dollars but well worth it. Thanks ETCG
I used the G2 brush on enamel, but otherwise went with the exact same process. Downside to the brush on is that it takes ages. Upside is no overspray. I also added in some high temp vinyl to match the color of my car. I know it's a bit ricey, but black calipers with "Subaru" in WRB ended up looking really good for the $60 investment.
Omg, I’m so glad you mentioned a mask! Years ago I did my first brake job, no where near as extensive as cleaning and painting. The amount of black soot that came out of my nose the next few days was horrendous. Lesson learned, always wear a mask!!
Eric, To bad you have to put up with some of the comments on here. I have been painting calipers and brake drums for about 30 years and the method you just described works just fine. The quality of enamel paints now a days is awesome. I painted the drums on my jeep about 4 years ago and they have not shown any signs of rust yet. I live in the North country where there is salt used on the highways in the winter. I used the exact method you described and a good quality Rustoleum enamel. Not even high temp. nor did I use a primer. Love your videos. Great info for us shade tree mechanics. Keep it up.
Every shop needs a dremel tool or two... one with an extra-large wire wheel and the other with a heavy duty rotary cut off disk! Time savings that a dremel provides is worth every penny....
I had a front caliper and a rear caliper on my G6 GXP break two years apart. I like replacing things in pairs so I ended up with four new calipers on my car. Fronts just got VHT, but when I did the rears I used VHT and then a clear coat on top. Fronts aren't looking so hot after three years, but the rears still look like I did them yesterday after a quick spraydown at the car wash. Also - front pass side caliper locked up AGAIN this summer (stupid reman part) so I rebuilt it (your caliper rebuild video came in handy) and repainted it too. This time I used Eastwood caliper paint, then clear coat, and it's a thing of beauty. Bottom line, if you're going to the effort to paint your calipers to begin with, put a few coats of non-yellowing, UV resistant clear coat on top when you're done. It is WELL worth the time. Oh, and Eastwood > VHT, though not vastly so.
I used a rotary wire brush to get the surfaces shiny clean. Then wiped with alcohol, let it dry & painted. I used Rust-Oleum's caliper paint found at Wal-mart for $7~$8, and this paint is very durable (I painted the intake manifold & head covers with it too). Brake calipers are exposed to a very harsh environment (especially in winter where sodium-calcium is sprayed), and some rust would form. Once/year, I sand the rust off & do a touch-up on the calipers. For fixed calipers like Brembo, they say to take care not to chip the paint but I don't know why. Some brake cleaners are so strong of a solvent that they melt styrofoam instantanesouly, so I would recommend wearing a mask with cartridge filter (not a typical dust mask).
Painting the calipers taken apart like this also lets you paint the bracket and caliper different colors, which I rarely see people taking advantage of. My GTO front calipers are yellow and black to match the car.
I sprayed mine with Dawn dish soap let it sit, then washed them with water. Wire brushed, sprayed them with isopropyl alcohol and done. Calipers been red for 2 years now.
I have a small blast cabinet on a cart. I put the cabinet on the toppa the card and the bag down on the bottom shelf. It works great that way. I just got a China Freight ... oops Harbor Freight cart and it all fit perfectly . Of course to use on this would require complete disassembly....Great video.
When it comes to rusty calipers even a good quick clean and paint like you did here makes a lot of difference in appearance, especially when sitting behind a wheel with large openings. Looks much cleaner from outside the wheel.
I's add that a layer of white primer first is a good idea, it helps keep the paint from flaking off and if you're painting them red or other semi-translucent color, the color will pop out a lot brighter with a white base coat.
I've never personally painted calipers, but this looked pretty good. And yes, wear a mask! The guy who taught me everything I know about paint and body never wore a mask and it messed him up. If your shop wasn't so large, I'd be on you about ventilation, but for that small of a job, it's ok.
After painting my calipers on my Saleen several times, I found a better way......powdercoating. I had all four calipers powdercoated about 7 years ago. They are to this day in great shape. No flaking, fading, or other deterioration. Not cheap, and your car is down obviously for a while until the powdercoater is done. But the results last a very long time. And you usually have a wider selection of calipers. My Saleen, for example, is the very very nice Atlantic Blue from Ford. Very close to the blue of the Florida Gators. So I had my calipers powdercoated orange. The place that did the job was able to match Gator orange quite easily. All in all a great job.
I watched a guy paint his calipers with a brush kit through the wheel spokes. I started to ask something, but just decided to watch. Was before smartphones, otherwise I would have had some good stuff.
It may sound ridiculous but one of the very best cleaners to remove brake dust is a good soap and water. I was surprised how well it worked. Needless to say oil & grease may come off easier with the brake cleaning products but the soap and water will keep the dust from flying all over!
If you want to make the front surface smoother, hit it with some 80 grit, then 180 grit. You can even step down to 220 or 320 if you really want them to be slick
My 99 gmc jimmy has now got to where it wont crank below 30 degrees but it turns over. Any idea about this? Also i hear a noise under the hood after running the air a bit on a hot day, water pump going bad? Please help!
Interesting version you can use rubbing alcohol on the parts to wipe the down after dusting or scraping off the curd and then use a rust inhibitor and apply 3 coats 15 minutes apart to help the metal avoid rusting and then apply 2-3 coats of the color of your choice and 2 coats of clear coat for that extra shine.

Ha! Such a rebel Eric ... "Do as I say, not as I do" Been there, done that and learned the hard way... now I keep a couple wire coat hangers around the shop for all sorts of things, including a quick, cheap and easy way to support those dangling brake parts!
Leave it as is, the best way to go, cleaning and wiping oils and deposits are good idea but as you said, painting calipers are not necessary unless you have extra time for your weekend.
Any which way you paint calipers it will look 100 times better then the rust you get 10 minutes after you start driving. Locally many shop offer to do it with all four corners cost from 80 to 120. Well worth it.

Not all vehicle applications have the option of "decent" pre-painted calipers. Sometimes all you can get are OE style replacements.
Kevin Irish then don't paint them, if oe replacements will suit, then you don't need upgraded brakes. Everyone knows your red callipers aren't brembos
I've painted a few new sets of brembos, they aren't perfect out of the factory. When you're building show cars, every little bit of detail helps.
