Well then again James is the only one who did the research at least for the 2nd attempt for their J&MM video, the one I presume you are talking about. Mike had the most obnoxiously shitty attitude about the game the entire time, which over the years I have also realized is probably just because he's a bitch. I mean go back and rewatch it, he complains at least once per minute about it and ultimately gets James sour on it who was on his way otherwise to learning how to beat the game. If only James had seen this video or the other walkthrough on TH-cam that's popular I think they would have got it. BTW I basically hate Mike forever now because he fired Bootsy low-key early January of last year. It's true, look it up. Wonder where Bootsy has been? That's where, kicked to the curb by Mike and his insecurity as 2nd best gamer in the room anytime Bootsy is around.
voteZDLR I remember that. Mike was insufferable and you could tell it was getting under James’ skin. I think that’s why they didn’t go on to try and beat it. I think James was just over it and wanted Mike to leave. He even said he likes the game. I’m sure he’s played it since then in his free time.

@@Bjorick I am probably going to stop watching at some point anyway. I have been ghost banned for two years now specifically because I was beginning to ask innocent questions (at first) about "Where's Bootsy?" and "Oh, man, I miss Bootsy! When will he do another Bootsy Beats?!" and one of those innocent comments is what got me ghost banned.
Then I got pissed.
I now watch every AVGN and J&MM but I can't stand Mike Matei. And I do leave comments anyway on the off chance he goes looking in there from time to time. I have all sorts of unique synonyms for him now, like because he eats and loves so much McDonald's shit I guarantee his farts smell like rotten eggs and battery acid, hence, "Acid Fart Mike Matei"
Beyond that, no offense to effeminate gay people but I guarantee he'd be taking broomsticks in the b-hole by now if he didn't have his internet fame, and I am convinced that girl he treats like shit is a beard anyway. There's no way Mike Matei is straight. He'd be the prissy, bitchy kind of gay, though.
The funniest thing to me is he seems to value himself on the ability to beat these old/retro games that people not only forgot about, they wouldn't give a fuck if they DID remember. Nobody cares but him but he considers himself some retro videogame wunderkind and I think that's the #1 reason Bootsy was let go -- Mike's decent at games but he's plateaued. Bootsy is the best retro video gamer they had. OF COURSE he had to go, it was cramping bitch-made Mike Matei's complete and utter lack of style.
Now THIS is video commentary done right! It's very informative and helpful for those interested in beating the game. Too many other "commentaries" out there are nothing but 7th grade humor from high school kids who all think they're the world's greatest standup comedians and in love with the sound of their own voice.

I have been struggling and frustrated with this game since I was 12 years old... I'm 38 now and still have never gotten past Day 2 so thanks for this walkthrough!!! And that video at the end was a nice touch lol

Can't tell you how much I enjoyed this man. I was 6 when this game came out and it required more strategy and precision than I was capable of at the time. Of course it scared me a bit too. I never beat it and seeing this walk through made the kid in me pump his fist in the air! Awesome job.

This was about the scariest game I played as a kid. I could never figure it out. The music is scary enough when entering a house. I'd usually pop it in and turn it off after a few minutes. Came across the video. Really enjoy it.

Great video, fun commentary, and excellent tactics. I've loved this game years, but always understood the bad rap it got, because as a kid in 1989, this thing was hard as hell. Tackling it as an adult is much more enjoyable. Love to see this remade to expand on some of the concepts (lighting the fireplaces in the cabins, etc...). Thanks for posting this. :)

Just found your channel yesterday. This vid is great. Your commentary is really good and informative, instead of just shitting on the game. I remember playing this game as a kid in the 80s. Its confusing and hard AF, but watching you play it with all the live commentary of what youre doing and why actually makes it really interesting. Better than scripted overdub, IMHO.
And your voice is pleasant to listen to which is a massive plus. So many youtube uploaders who do vids with speech, yeah maybe the content is good, but their voices are so annoying you can hardly listen to them.
Four years later, and yours is still the most instructive playthrough of this NES game. It's really ambitious for its time, with all the different stats the councilors have and the big world to explore, but I think they skimped on the manual pointing out that yes, some councilors are better than others at running, rowing, and throwing.
It does get a pretty undeserved bad rep, and I wonder how much of it is just from not hunting down and reading the manual, or obscure stuff like the councilors' different stats.
Like you said, a lot of people didn't like this game because it was difficult to figure out for a kid. I never did complete it but I had a lot of fun trying. Always been one of my favorites

Thanks. Not only do I finally now get to see the end of the game, I saw more than 10mins of it. Back in '89 I could not figure this game out. It was basically, "What's in this cabin? Uhh, I'm dead!"

Great video. With this walkthrough I finally was able to beat this game after 30 years. I bought this game brand new at toys r us back in 1990 i think........played it but could never figure anything out in it. Your right, this game was very difficult especially for young kids. A bunch of NES games were though. That's why its still the king of video game consoles!

I was never able to figure this game out as a kid. I always just wandered around aimlessly. It's cool to see a playthrough of it to see how it's supposed to be. I don't know why I never thought about looking for an actual playthrough of it before now.

I've been playing this for about 27 years and have never beat this game. I still own and still play it every once in awhile. (I dont know if i'll ever play it again now because i kinda feel like you just beat it for me.) Great job on the video. I never sit through any of these but yours was good. Thanks for the upload.
Just asking do you have to light the fireplaces on all three days or just once?
Playing the game the traditional way, I only ever focused on lighting them on day one. If you're using the speed torch method, lighting them isn't necessary at all.
Thanks so much for this! One of my absolute favourite childhood games. Just dusted off the old NES and forgot the strategy on this game. Only ever successfully finished it once by using a step-by-step paper walkthru formula back in the day that involved the forests. My bad skill level at fighting jason is what always makes me lose! I will keep watching this and trying again and again.
My one main question is: does it matter which cabin Mark starts at? everytime you reset the game everyone is in a random place. Should I keep resetting it until he is in one of the cabins near the cave side?? Does it matter?

items like the knife, key and vitamins are found by jumping and are always in the same place. they will reappear for a few screens but are basically found in the same place... machete appears after killing 60 zombies. I love this game

Use the torch to light the fireplaces was probably one of those things that was lost in translation. Several countries, even English speaking ones, refer to a lighter as a torch, so this is probably what they were referencing.

Thanks for making this video. Usually, I don't like commentaries but you did a great job. Typically, it's some bro douche bag cursing all the time. You added commentary when it was needed and didn't try to fill every second if the video with your voice. Plus you spoke at a normal tone, kudos.
Like most people I always hated this game. But, after watching your video I can see that it wasn't the game that sucked it was not knowing how to play.
This game has surprising layers of depth that I never knew about. Torches, pitchforks, Jason's mom's sweater. Wow I'm blown away and have a new found respect for this game. Thanks!

When i was a kid i was too scared to play this game. I played it at night! Never beat it :(
coffeeblak86 OMG me too. I'm 32 now, but when I used to play it I was like 7 or 8 and it used to scare the crap out of me. Castlevania used to scare me a little bit, but not nearly as much as this game. I think it was because I saw the movies and then tried to play the game at night (obviously because I was 7 too).
The only real complaint I have of this game is the walking/map screen thing. When you walk one direction with your character it shows you going the other direction on the map. Which AVGN explained it in a video which makes perfect sense. The inside cabin scenes remind me of Goonies 2 when you went in caves.
