Nice and calm walkthroughs. It took me 30 years to beat this dang game.I would have never known about the red crystal and the tornado.I would still be standing at the cliff trying to hit it with my head.
I remember when I was a kid finding the "clue" that said to hit your head against Deborah Cliff and one day I went to the cliff and was trying to figure out a way to "hit my head" against it, and I knelt down (in the game) a bunch of times and then my friend said something to me and while I was looking at him talking to him, I was holding down on the D pad so Simon was still kneeling... Voila! Tornado. I was in shock.
Dracula's ring gives you a free hit when you are full health before deducting hp. It does not need to be equipped to function just looted and maybe equipped once. It's significance is related to the bloodstone and it's lore connection to vampires in parts of folklore.
If you found that in a Reddit thread, I’ve seen it and people dispute the claim there. Isn’t it great that the game is so mysterious and dizzying that we’re still arguing over its mysteries decades later?
I can confirm this isn't true. It's a rumor that's persisted for decades. It's likely that it originally had a function but they took it out of the game.
Your defense increases as you level up, meaning you won't always lose health when getting hit. It has nothing to do with Dracula's Ring. All the Ring does (along with the Cross) is allow you to enter Castlevania.
The first ending shown is the best one: in the second one (Day 8-16), Simon succumbs to his wounds, but at least makes it out of Dracula's castle, and that he is seen at the gravestone during the day means that he's still under the effects of the curse at night and the curse hasn't been fully lifted; in the third (Day 16 and on), it could be inferred that Simon didn't make it out of the castle, as he isn't seen at Dracula's gravestone and the text in this ending is a eulogy for Simon and the curse is still a blight on the land with no one knowing that it's still present. In the first (Day 1-8), Simon is at the gravestone during sunset, meaning the curse no longer has any sway on him at night. This is the only ending that we know that Simon is alive at the end on the game, and his curse broken, despite Dracula (who will always come back) clawing out of his grave.
The endings are not in order. There is a thing about this game where you should never trust people or your eyes since everything could be an illusion because of the curse.
Thx mom and dad for buying this game for me back in Christmas of 1988. Had a friend from school who must have been subscribed to Nintendo Power tell me how to get past that cliff. Never would've figured it out otherwise.
@54:06 I like to point out this part with the up and down blocks. If its going up and you jump off you get bigger height but if its doing down as you jump off you dont get as much height. I always jump off them as its going up. I never need to go to the edge and jump. This tip makes this part so much better.
I remember a game named "Dust: an Elysian tail", where you have to do the same thing with a red crystal equipped. The first time I saw it, I said: "Hey, It's like Castlevania 2!" Great video, very useful.
This was easily my favorite Castlevania game. I had a Nintendo Power that had a code to get to the very end. You had every item and just had to ride the tornado. Good times.
I enjoyed this one out of the trilogy the most. The whole open world concept was really cool. Did take me quite some time before I figured out how to use the red crystal to spawn the tornado. Glad to see you making a video on it; even though I've beaten it quite a few times. But it's such a classic!
I love re-watching some of your first videos. You can tell just how much you have grown. Even in the early days your calm voice and commentary is refreshing.
Yet another homerun with this video. Watched the entire thing. I’m feeling nostalgic so I think I’ll try to beat CastleVania 2 since I never beat it as a child. I don’t know anyone who ever did. How on earth would a child know where to kneel and what to hold without the aid of the Internet. Which wasn’t around in 1989 lol!! Thanks for another amazing video! Can’t wait to see the next one.
I just played this for the first time and its crazy how 20 years since the AVGN video this game is considered bad. Antiquated by modern standards, yes. A heck of a Metroidvania to kick off the idea of the genre? Absolutely. I had fun with CV2 despite the faje blocks and lack of challenging boss fights, but it definitely should be regarded as one of the higher quality games in the NES library
I just beat this game a few minutes ago, got goosebumps all over at the ending. One of the greatest game ever if you know what you're doing. It feels like you're really on an adventure. Castlevania 1 and 2 done, onto 3. I'm only 20 and I can't believe treasures like Castlevania flew over my head. Took me over a day of official playtime.
I've been through all these games, it's really nice to enjoy the game without actually having to play through them. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Just want to say thank you. Played this game which I loved at the age of 5 and obviously left a nostalgic place in my heart forever. Finally beat today, with your help, at the age of 37. Thank you. 👍
I figured that out as a 9 year old back in the day, I'm kinda stumped that people still don't know how game physics work, and is something i try in pretty much any platformer i play when i get the chance

Now as a grown up neither I could! lol! I had to follow a guide and yours is a master piece! Thank you for all the details and showing us the 3 different endings. This was the only Castlevania from the NES trilogy that I haven't finished. Thank you so much again! Greetings from Mexico!
This is the first time in a long time that I have watched a tube of the You video, from start to finish, without skipping over anything. Loved reminiscing through my youth while playing this game!
The Eyeball actually reveals ALL hidden items in the game like the Sacred Flame and books outside of the mansions. It's nice to see all the endings back to back.
You're a scholar and a gentleman for releasing these videos. If you need high resolution scans of Castlevania 3 instruction manuals and or, box arts. Please let me know, I do believe I can provide adequate scans of what I own. I do hold a complete in box copy of Castlevania 3. Cheers, and good luck on future videos, thank you.
The flaws and premature unpolished & seemingly unfinished release just didn't matter! Nintendo knew we would buy it anyways, and so they just wanted to spit out new games. The graphics & sound in 1988 made up for it 🥴 We just dealt with the frustration, bought Nintendo Power at the grocery store, and fillled out the postage paid white tear-out card inside (with check or money order included) for a monthly mail order subscription!!🤩🤠
Is "prossess" a combination of the words "process" and "possess"? Does this then mean that one must go through the process of possessing all of Dracula's body parts prior to destroying Dracula altogether to end Simon's curse (or quest, for that matter)? Perhaps, then, the word "prossess" would be intentional if this is the case.
I think youtube recommended me your videos after i started looking up stuff on Ys III for the SNES, glad to have found it! You put a lot of effort into this and my favorite things are the information you put into the negative space of the video, what a clever use of that 4:3 image.
Thanks, Varg! BTW - I really like YS3 - I played it on SNES and TurboGraphix (the TG version is on CD and has an amazing enhanced soundtrack with voice acting for all of the characters except Adol - he always talks in text for some reason). Cool game!
Brilliant guide. I stopped playing about halfa year ago and totally forgot where I was when I came back to it. Just after Rib and blue orb. With your guide I beat the game in 1 hour. Most of that was farming for 200 hearts too. Always be remembered for your bravery and courage.
I came here to see the other endings as I got the slowest when I beat this game back in the day. Here I was waiting to see how awesome they were. Apparently the developers were thinking of me way back then!
This was the only Castlevania game I owned as a kid. Trying to get through it before the Internet was nearly impossible. You basically had to have the strategy guide.
Oh my god, before you said it, I never realized the Castlevania part at the end is really supposed to be stage 5 of the first Castlevania 🤯 You even cross the bridge before, that you cross in the other direction in Castlevania 1. And then the entrance hall is the infamous hallway before the Death fight. There's even roughly the same amount of pillars, each with one window in between them, just like in Castlevania 1 🤯 It really blows my mind
Easily my favorite Castlevania I've been playing it since the 80s and it is one that I still revisit a few times a year. I knew it had two endings but I thought it was related to how many of the items you collected I never knew there were three! This was an awesome walkthrough I love it
35:02 The trick with these kinds of platforms is to jump while the platform you are on is rising, they have a gravity notion to them that affects your jump, meaning they increase your jump while they are rising and decrease your jump while descending.
Lots of great mechanical information in this one; good stuff! I do have a few additional tips for this game: 1) The edges of the platforms in town can be tricky; if you jump off of them, you might fall into water, BUT, if you just walk off the edge and straight down, you'll never hit water. 2) Those blocks that go up and down have a trick: if you jump while they're going up, you'll be launched into the air, but if you jump while they're going down, your jump will be lower. 3) The eye actually shows anything hidden in blocks, so it will also show the Sacred Flame. That's actually how I found it; I'd thought it was a glitch at first. 4) Enemies take twice as much damage at night, but also give hearts twice as big; a good way to grind is to enter mansions at night.
43:50 - The reason that Dracula's ring is one of the parts you have to collect and not his fangs is because, traditionally, Dracula wore a large enchanted ring, usually a ruby. That enchantment is probably what lets you enter Dracula's castle; in the game, if you try crossing the bridge into the castle without the ring, you won't be able to break the blocks to jump up (even if you have the nail). If you look closely in the final battle, however, you will see that Dracula is throwing his fangs at you, so they were not lost at the end of the original Castlevania.
In King’s Quest 2, the main character disguises himself as Dracula, which includes a ring which convinces the boat man to ferry him across the lake to Dracula’s castle.
@@KopperNeoman The official release of King’s Quest 2 was in 1985. There was a fan remake in 2002, which I’ve never played yet but which may be what you’re thinking of.

Thank you for this! This game always pissed me off as a kid and I wanted to beat it at least once in my lifetime. I’m 40 and I just beat it while watching this video. Thank you!
I think the endings are as follows: Fastest ending: Simon survives, but because we know that Dracula resurrects we also know it's the true ending Second ending: Simon survives the battle, but dies later due to the curse (because he didn't kill him fast enough it took a toll on his body) Worst ending: Simon doesn't even get out of the Castlevania, killing Dracula on his dying breath. That's why he's nowhere to be seen around the grave and the text is saying things about being remembered. Something you'd hear during someone's funeral. Also, black and grey background. Anyway, great video!
I finally beat Castlevania 2 on the switch!!! I've always skipped over it on NES all these years. You were a joy to watch and listen to. Thank you so much for the easy to follow guide. Now on to part 3!!
From what I understand, it should actually be as follows: 1 - Best ending is supposed to be the background during the day with Simon there and the first ending text. No Dracula hand. 2 - Simon is there in the evening with the third ending text. Dracula's hand is seen at the end. 3 - Gray background with no Simon, second ending text where he dies (hence why he's not there). Simon is supposed to die for taking the longest amount of time, not the middle amount.
Hi, I just discovered this channel and I've watched 5 of your videos today! It's good stuff! You were asking why do you get Dracula's ring, and not some other body part? Well I think it's a reference to the Hammer Dracula movies. At the end of the first one, the last image as Dracula dies lingers on his hand as it turns to dust, leaving his ring. In the sequels, his ring is often highlighted as an artifact as the camera often makes a point of it. In a sequel, Scars of Dracula, his belongings were preserved and returned to him upon his resurrection. The ring was one of those items as he can be seen wearing it again. In further sequels, Hammer's idea was to have a successor follow Dracula in Taste the Blood of Dracula, wearing his cape and ring. Essentially this was a way to recast the role. A soft reboot by today's standards. But Christopher Lee returned to the role so the whole build up to the ring was half baked and ultimately dropped. So, I think Castlevania is referring to this, treating the ring as one of his possessions that must be returned to him to complete his resurrection.
46:05 - I found your video because of this part, I never figured this out as a kid and I am happy to finally beat this game after all these years on the anniversary collection, thanks!
You have my thanks. I love the old aesthetic and have been enjoying these rereleases of all the old games but one thing I don't miss about them is the batshit insane logic of how to progress at times, I genuinely have no idea how people figured some of this out back in the day short of spending hundreds of hours trying literally everything.
Best/worst ending is probably not about what is best for belmont but how technically impressive the endings are and also that there is a twist to the ending which is more interesting :)
This is a godsend. I got semi-softlocked because I didn't have a good enough whip to fight off all the monsters in one part of the game. I had already taken the tornado so I had no way to get back. Thank you for making this, I don't think I would have the will to restart without this tutorial.
I 2nd that. It's weird, Mario 2 is my favorite Mario game on nes and people don't give that game enough credit. So it's a little different, but darn good though.
One other note about the Eyeball is that if you don't already have the Sacred Flame, it will reveal it to you when you are on the screen it's hidden on.
Thanks to this video I was able to beat castlevania 2 for the first time ever. I don't know how many times I've tried but I did it, finally. Thanks and keep up the great videos.

Also The Golden Knife's dmg scales with what ever whip you have equipped. So if you have the Chain or Morning Star whip it will only deal dmg of those whips. However you are correct that once you have the Flame Whip the golden knife is the ultimate sub weapon in the game in term of dmg. I use it all the time against Dracula.
This was the first game I got my parents to buy me. I had just completed Zelda 2 and that was the best and I wanted more of the same. Little did I know this would become my favorite game ever. After your video I bought a copy of Simons quest and finally beat it. I love your videos. Thanks for the walkthrough!!
That's awesome!! Thanks, Dean!
Dracula's ring gives you a free hit when you are full health before deducting hp. It does not need to be equipped to function just looted and maybe equipped once. It's significance is related to the bloodstone and it's lore connection to vampires in parts of folklore.
Whoa sweet. I was wondering about that, and then even he mentioned not knowing what was really up. Thanks!

The best soundtrack at the time for the NES. Then again, the CastleVania franchise never had an issue with that.
Great review, as always, sir!
Thanks Roscoe
I think the music is better than part 3 also which supposedly is the bomb soundtrack
What's Simon's curse?
@@dansmith1661 I'm pretty sure the text to the endings was merely the result of lack of playtesting.
You play through all these classics like a man prossessed!
I remember a game named "Dust: an Elysian tail", where you have to do the same thing with a red crystal equipped. The first time I saw it, I said: "Hey, It's like Castlevania 2!" Great video, very useful.
Simon's Quest was honestly my favorite Castlevania game
It's really funny that Dracula's rib can sheild you from anything but bones.
That is funny. Bone on bone violence.
Your narration is great, that alone makes me not want to skip any part of your walkthrough! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This was easily my favorite Castlevania game. I had a Nintendo Power that had a code to get to the very end. You had every item and just had to ride the tornado. Good times.
Every time he mentions stake vendor, I chuckle thinking steak vendor 🙂
Hey. I love the videos. I watched your Zelda 2 one and just used this one for castlevania 2.
Seriously. Great job with these.
So happy I’m catching back catalogue entries Dude! Keep up the great work, I jam to this in between my gaming and smoking sessions!
Awesome!! Glad you're enjoying it!
Subbed and Greetings from Germany .I love this Game and Music since i was a Child even now with 42 this Game and Music is Special to me, good Times -😄
Wow. Lots of comments already on this video. The channel is growing. Keep it up! Platforming games with knock back damage drives me crazy!
I know you've been watching since the beginning - thank you so much for your support!
I was so glad when I beat this as a kid. I never knew that the whip cracking jumps made you go further though or the warp. Nice watch.
Thanks DE!
Congratulations! Good luck on 3, that one's more of an action game, but also fun
I've been through all these games, it's really nice to enjoy the game without actually having to play through them. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Glad you're enjoying the channel, Jamie!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Loving the channel. This channnel is going to blow up. Guaranteed.
Just want to say thank you. Played this game which I loved at the age of 5 and obviously left a nostalgic place in my heart forever.
Finally beat today, with your help, at the age of 37. Thank you. 👍
As long as you jump off the floating blocks when they are moving upwards, you will gain that push to jump higher
I figured that out as a 9 year old back in the day, I'm kinda stumped that people still don't know how game physics work, and is something i try in pretty much any platformer i play when i get the chance
There's no way I could beaten this game without any help! Thank you so much for uploading this walkthrough! When this game released I was a kid and I couldn't beaten up. Now as a grown up neither I could! lol! I had to follow a guide and yours is a master piece! Thank you for all the details and showing us the 3 different endings. This was the only Castlevania from the NES trilogy that I haven't finished. Thank you so much again! Greetings from Mexico!
Walkthrough begins at 6:00. Recently got the Anniversary Collection as a present, and am going through Castlevania 2 at the moment.
Same, just beat the og yesterday
Same. Finished CV1 last week and just finished CV2. Now onward to Dracula’s Curse.
You now prossess the ability to conquer Castlevania II: Simon's Quest ! Beautiful game, it does have it's flaws though.
I like the random places where they learn how to spell possess, then forget again.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
I played and beat this game as a kid in the 80s. There was no internet for finding secrets. It was and still is one of my favorite games.
Ha, maybe they were!
Went back and beat this game again after 30+ years with your kind assistance on nes classic. Thanks for the memories.
Simons Quest has always been my favorite by far
Its much better than a lot of people think!
It definitely is the basis for SotN
A handful of tweaks and this game could have been a masterpiece.
@@zalden2565 have you seen the unofficial remakes ?
@@busupshot83 I have not heard of them. Any suggestions?
Silence of the Daylight is one of my favorite songs of all time!
I always used the diamond to kill dracula. The room is fairly small so if you spam the diamonds, it becomes a bullet-hell for dracula
This was the only Castlevania game I owned as a kid. Trying to get through it before the Internet was nearly impossible. You basically had to have the strategy guide.
Oh my god, before you said it, I never realized the Castlevania part at the end is really supposed to be stage 5 of the first Castlevania 🤯
You even cross the bridge before, that you cross in the other direction in Castlevania 1.
I do have a few additional tips for this game:
1) The edges of the platforms in town can be tricky; if you jump off of them, you might fall into water, BUT, if you just walk off the edge and straight down, you'll never hit water.
@ObiWanBillKenobi Wasn't there a version of that game where the priest was a werewolf and the vampire was a good guy?
@@KopperNeoman The official release of King’s Quest 2 was in 1985. There was a fan remake in 2002, which I’ve never played yet but which may be what you’re thinking of.
Apparently, Dracula's Fangs are left over in the files.
When I was a kid, I used to have a password memorized that starts you with everything. Nice video. I didn't know the nail and eye did anything. This was one of my favorite NES games.

I love each and every vid you're doing man. Amazing effort, calm voice, great descriptions of my childhood games. Kudos
Thank you for this! This game always pissed me off as a kid and I wanted to beat it at least once in my lifetime. I’m 40 and I just beat it while watching this video. Thank you!
This GREAT!!! SUBBED We needed you back in 1987! LOL
Thanks for the sub! I wish they had stuff like this back in the day!
Very helpful commentary. Thank you.
I think the endings are as follows:
Fastest ending: Simon survives, but because we know that Dracula resurrects we also know it's the true ending
Second ending: Simon survives the battle, but dies later due to the curse (because he didn't kill him fast enough it took a toll on his body)
Worst ending: Simon doesn't even get out of the Castlevania, killing Dracula on his dying breath.
I love this game. This was the first Castlevania game I ever played as a kid.
From what I understand, it should actually be as follows:
1 - Best ending is supposed to be the background during the day with Simon there and the first ending text.
This is the most nostalgic shit ever! Just found your channel yesterday and subscribed with the quickness! Keep up the good work!
Thanks!! Glad you're enjoying it!
Simon's Quest is my favorite Castlevania game!!!
It's so much fun just to explore it! The atmosphere, the music, the mysteries at every turn - great game!
I 2nd that. It's weird, Mario 2 is my favorite Mario game on nes and people don't give that game enough credit. So it's a little different, but darn good though.
Do Journey to Silius by sunsoft sometime if u haven't already done it. That'd be super sweet dude! 😍
I like Journey to SIlius, its def on my list!
Mine, too. It was the first I ever played and none o the others rally seem to hold a candle to it.
Awesome playthrough !!
After 30 years I finally beat Castlevania two and three this week.
Couldn't have done it without this walkthrough
I feel like "Slimy Bar Sinister" has to be a reference to Simon Bar Sinister, the main villain of the old Underdog cartoon from 1964.
It probably is. Not sure if the programmers intended that, or if the person who wrote the instruction manual was an Underdog fan.
One other note about the Eyeball is that if you don't already have the Sacred Flame, it will reveal it to you when you are on the screen it's hidden on.
Went from text adventures to this. Never looked back.
Thanks to this video I was able to beat castlevania 2 for the first time ever. I don't know how many times I've tried but I did it, finally. Thanks and keep up the great videos.
Thanks awesome, Kyle!!I love hearing that! Thank you for reporting back.

the name of the big mask boss vampira is actually Carmilla from the castlevania time line/franchise or so im told
That def makes sense as a retcon. Thanks, Zypher!
love your guide and holy shit that getting back from getting the diamond was the hardest part of the whole game for me lol got to be the hardest jumping section in all the NES games i played but again thank you sir for your hard work i love that your videos arent just guides but alittle history on each game thank you very much and keep them coming helping get Retro Achievements in games i thought i would never beat and to anyone who beat this game back in the day your a damn champ
I never was able to find certain things like the tornado until it was printed in nintendo power. I even called the hotline to find clues to beat the game. I have the map memorized now and watching you play through it was a world of nostalgia. Thanks for this.
Man you deserve a lot more subscribers. Love from India. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Booba! Tell you friends!
I agree
The term “Metroidvania” finally makes sense... so much sense. Thank you, UCanBeatVG.
I always loved the diamond weapon. Seemed very intuitive to ricochet it.
There's actually a lot of tight corridors in this game where it's awesome.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames If I recall, the diamond is very effective versus Dracula. When I was 10, my best friend taught me how to beat Dracula and his method was spamming diamonds in the final fight. Not sure if it's the best method, but it worked for us back in the day!
great guide, the ring could be a reference to the lore that protects them from being reveled to people. It can also allow them to walk in the daylight.
