  • Hey Plant People!
I wanted to start this new series where we go into a bit more depth about certain species of plants that I have. Some I may have more experience with, but others will be new to me. I might include follow up videos in the series so that we can go over my growing experience with them over time as well.
Today our feature is about the Radermachera sinica or as it is more commonly known the China Doll, Serpent Tree, or Emerald Tree. The sinica portion of the name means "from China". It is an evergreen tree in the family Bignoniaceae. It’s native to the subtropical mountain regions of southern China and Taiwan. It can reach heights of up to 30m tall and a trunk diameter of a whopping 1m. I actually purchased this plant in February 2019, but I'm just now posting the video I made way back then.
    Kingdom: Plantae
    Order: Lamiales
    Family: Bignoniaceae
    Genus: Radermachera
    Species: Radermachera sinica

I just got a bonsai version of this, it's such a gorgeous plant. Radermachera is actually a full on tree, but you can keep it small. It doesn't mind being rootbound either. Now to hope it doesn't immediately start being a drama queen and drops all its pretty leaves haha

Haha, thanks for sharing your info. I've found once the temp hit over 80 degrees indoors she has been dropping some leaves. I'm watering her quite a bit. She kind of reminds me of a peace lily on watering requirements thus far. Here's wishing you luck and success with your bonsai! I bet it's beautiful. 🌴💚

I just planted one of these today. The nurseryman said to plant in a shady location. It will get about five hours of direct sun with shade in the morning and afternoon. I think it will be cold hardy in my location. I am planting it about twelve feet away from a Celon Cinnamon tree. They will look good together.

I have two 6 foot china doll plants. I water it every third day, moist not soaking. I keep it in indirect sunlight. And yet the leafs and complete branches have begun to shed. A faint breeze of the fan is enough to make the leaves fall. Can you please help? The leaves on one of them is only towards the top when it used to be lush green. Do the leaves regenerate where the entire branch is gone? Please help me rescue it.

I've had my small one for a little bit.... they're so cute! Mine is in front of a west window and I crack the blinds every day. One time I let it get a little too dry and it wilted quite dramatically (like it was fine in the morning and when I got off work it looked half dead!) But a nice watering and it bounced right back. It's never lost any leaves yet. I recently repotted since it was needing water more than once a week in its tiny pot. Good luck :)

They're different from the typical indoor plants, and that's part of why I was drawn to it. I'm hoping mine can weather our brutal summer. Between our environment and other factors I tend to run my plants through a gauntlet of sorts, so I will report back. I appreciate you sharing your experience. You sound like a fabulous plant parent! 💚

Mine has been pretty thirsty in my home environment (temp 83F), and it doesn't seem to like temps over 80F. I hope you enjoy yours and it does well for you! Thanks for watching and commenting. 😊🙏💚
