    You are absolutely right, those painted plants are an abomination. Whenever I see something like that I just think WHY. WHY would anyone do this to a plant??!
    Editing to say you absolutely took me out with that fern "I pointed my camera at it and it just wilted"

    🤣😂💕🌱 Thank you and I was having a lot of fun with laughter as you inserted the sound of warning as you zoomed into each one of the plants🌱🛑🤣😂 I can testify to all the ones you showed because I purchased most of them as a newbie and I sure did learn my lesson! So everyone watching this listen to him because he’s right on point! Thank you again Patrick for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I’m so happy to be part of your plant community!🌱💕

    I second everyone sounding off in the comments about how helpful this type of video is for beginners. As a beginner myself, I have very little knowledge about what pretty things are traps just by looking at them. Well, except those painted succulents (why would anyone buy that???). I also appreciate that you consistently point out traps in many of your videos, so I feel like I'm retaining that information and it's useful to me. Thanks for keeping us newbies well informed before we launch ourselves into total disappointment!

    I must say... aside from the TERRIBLE painted plants (what the heck?) you've been so spot on... I've had at least 90% of the plants you mentioned and my dry-ass place killed them all because I couldn't raise the humidity enough... ESPECIALLY during the winter time. I thought I was trash with plants... until I found more suited ones for my place. Great video!

    I'm a total beginner. Just got into plants. Brought back 2 from the store yesterday - a ficus elastica and a monstera deliciosa. Saw so many pretty plants while I was there tho. And, wanted to take them all home. I almost bought some of the ones you warn us about. So glad I didn't. Some were also on 'my list'. Was almost pulled into multiple traps I had no idea about.
    Thanks to you, now I know what to avoid; _and_ what to maybe bring home along my plant journey. You're saving people a lot of time, money, heartache, stress.
    Thanks for educating, being honest and entertaining at the same time. I thoroughly enjoy coming plant shopping with you.

    I'm new here and love your videos! I have had good luck, and a little bad luck, buying houseplants at Trader Joes. Their plants often come in larger grower pots, and cost from a few dollars up to about $20. They had maidenhair ferns for $9, and surprisingly, mine lasted several months. Also philodendron Xanadu, healthy and vigorous. And one beginning with "Ct..." That is stunning!

    I kept a maidenhair alive for a couple of years. It hated me, I hated it, I think we just kept going out of spite. Eventually, although it had not died any further I threw it out because it was time for us to stop torturing each other. I was sad because Mum had a huge, thriving one when I was a kid. And then I remembered that we lived in southern Australia then, and I live in New England now, and the conditions are NOT the same.

Maidenhair I tried 3x but I cant go on vacation🥴 no one will water it even its in a self-watering pot🤦‍♀️. I havent seen the ficus, so havent tried😁. But got big FLF and its outdoors. Most of the plants you've shown I grew them in my backyard in the shade and keep them watered during summer. They need a lot of indirect light and warm temperatures. I live in Zone 10😅

    Ahahah we brought home at least four of these (I've still got two maidenhair ferns BTW - not looking their best but we found a compromise).
    We also just put our ivy outside (dunno why we left it so long inside, sorry about that lil' ivy), my husband has now been told to put the croton (sp?) outside as well - it was doing well, but not thriving.
    Now the 2nd plant you showed (pink leaves, I'm bad with plant names) is doing beautifully in a terrarium (not the maidenhair BTW - the terrarium was too big and against all odds it became covered with mold - it's doing OK now, it's been revived and settled with my other maidenhair)... So thank you on behalf of beginners everywhere.

    Very long comment about Croton care from someone who has been growing them for a while now with success. If you're interested in them, or maybe are curious why you struggle with them, please read this!
    I grow crotons (Codiaeums) indoors during the cold months here in Upstate NY. I absolutely love Codiaeum but if anyone is keeping them indoors, I highly recommend using a good grow light year round. The $18ish Cholas light strips are good for smaller Codiaeum, just don't have them too far from the plant. For lights like this, try to keep them less than a foot away from the newest foliage. My largest is a Codiaeum 'Corkscrew' that I bought two years ago when I was still very much a beginner. During the cold months it sits in my room, about 3 feet below a SpiderFarmer SF2000 at 80% power. It does REALLY well. Earlier in the year, I rescued a small Codiaeum 'Petra' that sits about 4 inches below the same light, just off to the side of it. It dries out extremely fast but it is also thriving, so never be scared that it's "too much" light. Just acclimate it first!
    Watering is a huge need for these to live their best lives as well, so try not to let them go bone dry for too long. A good water, (I prefer bottom watering), when the soil is completely dry or the pot is very light is ideal. If you're new to Codiaeum and are scared of overwatering, you can wait until the leaves start to droop a little until you get more comfortable with it's water needs. It's important to note that waiting for the plant to droop significantly can slow or kill off new growth. Just be sure to fully saturate the root ball, and with larger Codiaeum, you may want to saturate all of the soil. Like Ficus, they love to root wherever they can and often push roots towards the surface of the soil. While not necessary, I do recommend fertilising with something you're comfortable with to improve the overall health of the plant. I personally use LiquiDirt and it works very well. Personally, 2.5mL of concentrate per gallon of water has been my sweet spot. You could probably make it stronger, it's just what I prefer.
    They love higher temps and do well in most humidity, but pretty much chill in anything. I've grown mine in anywhere from 39F/3.8C up to 100F/37.7C and 21% to 97% humidity. They have yet to drop leaves from cold temps in my care, even from it dropping 40 degrees in a span of a few hours. If you're really stressed about spider mites, you can of course keep your humidity up a bit. However, as long as your plant isn't quite dehydrated it should do just fine. If your Codiaeum does get spider mites, Captain Jack's Deadbug Brew is my go to for spider mites and thrips as it works very well.
    Codiaeum are very tough plants from my experience, and they only drop their leaves in very cold temps, when they're dry for far too long or when they're severely lacking in light. I know that sounds super high maintenance but they're one of my easiest genera. Their leaves can droop for quite a while before falling off or dying, so you don't HAVE to water them right away like you would with a peace lily, just recommended that you water when you notice it for better and faster growth. Like I said, I've had mine in temps as low as 39F/3.8C and they still do well, just growth is slowed a bit. My first year with Codiaeum, they did really well until I brought them inside. One of them dropped all but 3 leaves due to lack of light, though after significantly bumping it's light, it's been doing incredibly well. They are so resilient, bounce back incredibly fast and I highly highly recommend them to anyone who wants to try them out, or try them again.
    Bottom line, if you set your plant up for failure, it'll likely fail. Give it the right conditions and it'll absolutely thrive.
    Fun facts: Codiaeum are related to Euphorbia! Also, Codiaeum aren't actually Crotons, just like Epipremnum aren't actually Pothos. Pothos and Croton are separate genera, though often used as common name.
    Important Note: Codiaeum often are grown in plugs, so if you buy one, please check the roots after letting it acclimate. Despite doing everything I could, I lost a massive Codiaeum 'Petra'. Couldn't figure out why, since I've done really with them, until I went to trash it after the stalks had completely dried out. Very dense, hard, sponge-like plugs choked it out. I know a lot of people say plugs are all good and dandy, but I've had nothing but issues with them.

I don't do large amounts cause I'm afraid of overwatering it but it curls up on the edges of I skip more than 2 days without giving it a sip lol, such a drinking problem. I know you said to stop making palms an indoor thing and I'll admit I bought an Areca palm a little bit ago for indoors!!, So far it's doing well though ! 😂

    Mom got me a poka dotted plant as a house warming present it’s a pain .they get lengthy and have to be trimmed or pinched constantly and wilt if you don’t give them enough water .no on begonia I raised them when I worked at a plant shop they get powdery mildew if you water them too much and don’t give them enough water .

    Great video, very helpful! I have a plant that I have always called String of Turtles and it’s super easy to grow and propagates so easily. But it looks a little different than the plant you showed. The leaves on my plant are slightly larger and solid green, but otherwise it looks and grows the same as the plant in the video. I keep mine outside year round and any plant that can make it through one of our furnace blast summers has my total respect (I live in Palm Springs). So I’m wondering if the plant I have is not a string of turtles …?

      @Patadendron  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hmmm… you may have a peperomia ruby cascade or a peperomia pepperspot maybe? They’re closely related to the turtles!

    • @SuperManning11
      @SuperManning11 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Patadendron it could be a peperomia - on closer inspection, it’s pretty different than the string of turtles-not sure how I got that name in my head. The plant I have looks to be some kind of succulent. As I said, it doesn’t seem to be phased by the extreme heat of the summer, even in full sun. The leaves are fairly large, somewhere between the size of a quarter and a silver dollar. They are very thick and waxy, solid green, and grows in a very straight, long, single stem. It also has lots of strong, thick air roots that it uses to grab onto anything it can get ahold of.
      And thank you so much for responding to my question. So cool of you! Next time you’re in Palm Springs let me know and I’ll invite you for a garden tour at my place. I wonder if your email is in the info section-if so I’ll send you my phone #.

    I have like half these plants for a year and I thought they’ve been going good, now this video has me second guessing. This was very informative nonetheless.

    I've had good luck with my peperomia orbifolia teardrop, and now I'm all anxious about the quito and watermelon I ordered on Etsy (currently on their way to me). I hope I'm a peperomia genius and that it wasn't dumb luck the first time 😂
    I was sucked into a Calatheas in March. Three of the five new leaves burnt to a crisp in my bathroom, so now it's literally hiding in a dark corner, and I'm hoping for a come back 😂

    The only problem I've ever had with begonias was not using distilled water when watering them. Any salts or minerals in the water will cause browning/burning on the edges. If you water with purely distilled water, the plant will grow just fine in bright filtered light and they don't cause a fuss. They're one of the few plants I've had to water with purely distilled water, but it's worth it.
    Painting plants is an absolute abomination though. One of the nurseries that distributes to Shop Rite did that to the cuetlaxochitl plants (AND ADDED GLITTER! WHY GODS WOULD YOU GLUE GLITTER TO A PLANT'S LEAVES) and i'd be surprised if any of them made it.

    • @Patadendron
