+PeanutButterGamer The closest thing we got to a "real" Mario RPG 2 was Superstar Saga, but it changed quite a lot of the formula. I was hoping for a full-3D sequel on the n64 as a child, perhaps with graphics similar to that of Mario64, but sadly it never came.
Fun fact: When the boss Belome swallows Princess "Toadstool" he comments that she tastes 'peachy', an obvious nod to her Japanese name which was lost on most American gamers at the time since the name didn't come into common use in the US until Super Mario 64 came out.
Speaking of bosses, I enjoyed how Culex's text, at least in English, makes sly references to how he's a 2D guy in a (ostensibly) 3D world-that he's _"crossed into this dimension"_ and that SMRPG's _"world is uninhabitable"_ for his kind, forcing him to remain in a 2D-background pocket realm. I'm glad the video took some time to show that!
@@Thy_Boss speaking of which, I love how… Spoilers incoming. In the remake, he even questions in the first dialogue, how Mario is 3-D, and he wants that power. When you beat him, you have the ability to re-fight him later in the game as post game content. Guess how he appears? In full fledged 3-D.
It's crazy how many games Miyamoto has changed. So many people have come to him, presenting their work and he tells them to change it and it usually ends up being an amazing choice for their game. He truly is Nintendo's golden boy, I have no idea where the company would be without him.
***** Oh my god, you wouldn't believe. The "story" is Bowser kidnaps Peach, with no substance in between except for paper and sticker puns, generic Toad NPCs and enemy types, and a Navi clone that only gives GOOD hints less than half the time because the game's puzzles and general structure is so cryptic you can't play through it at all without a walkthrough. And as for Color Splash? It aims to do all that over again since Sticker Star is the "new standard" for Paper Mario.
So people really like Geno. That's cool, he's a great character, and I wish he had a better presence in Smash. But everybody forgets about the real pimp in SMRPG. Rock on, Johnny Jones.
+TheShieldsMD Johnny Jones was one of the coolest guys in the whole game. Any time a villain has a code of honor its the coolest thing ever. Kind of like Cortex from Thousand Year Door.
329link Johnny Jones is a shark pirate. He's huge, grizzled, scarred, and lives with his crew of shark pirates in a haunted ship. He's laid claim to one of the Star Pieces, but when Mario fights his way through his crew, he begins a standard boss battle: him and a couple of nameless mooks vs you and your party. Halfway through the fight, though, he challenges Mario to a 1-on-1, the only battle in the game (except Valentine's fight) where one character leaves the rest of the party to fight on their own. The pirates and your buds stand back and Mario duels Johnny. Mario wins, obviously, and takes the Star Piece back to Seaside Town, where Yaridovich, a spearman from Smithy's world, is revealed to have replaced all the townspeople with his minions. He tortures them until Mario gives up the Star Piece, then makes a retreat, only to be stopped by Johnny fucking Jones, coming out of the water. He lets Mario do the honors of kicking Yari's ass, then heads back into the sea, leaving Mario a note that calls him a pal.
Super Mario RPG has by far the best music of any Mario game and easily makes it into a top 5 best sound tracks from the SNES era... Somewhere with Gradius 3 and Chrono Trigger.
That's pretty awesome that they ended up pretty much getting every decision right during the development. IIt's a truly wonderful game and it's funny to think Square just wanted to do a by the numbers JRPG with a Mario skin, but Nintendo were able to challenge them and together they made a truly great game. It's a shame Square and Nintendo haven't collaborated more over the years.
_ NJC _ Geno actually has a surprisingly good shot at being added in Smash 5. Sakurai has said he not only likes the character, but also considered adding him to both Brawl and Smash 4. Additionally, Geno has plenty of moves that would make him completely unique, another thing Sakurai likes.
This was easily one of my most favorite games on the Super Nintendo. I kept trying to convince myself as a kid/teen that this game was dumb because it was an RPG based around the goofy characters and world of Mario.. but as I got older I realized that everyone else who had played this game loved it too. It was just a great game that was well designed all around. Also it was probably one of my favorite RPG's ever because of the awesome combat system. I was always sad that other RPG's didn't take the same approach as this game and let you do button timing to gain more damage or to defend mid combat and take less damage, or even have a chance at getting an extra item!
Agreed. Except I always loved it from day 1. I remember the first Mario and Luigi sorta did include the timed button sequences during the fights (it was the only one I played in that series)
Wait, they wanted to make a SMRPG 2, but it broke down after square leaned away from Nintendo. but now they have put Cloud in smash, and there are rumblings that Dragon Quest 11 and FF15/7remake might be on NX too... Are they getting friendly again, so then perhaps, maybe? a Sequel? Wow... I'm sure setting myself up for disappointment here, I should shut up lol
+Trakker1985 They've been on good terms for a long time now. They were only on bad terms when Square went to Sony throughout the Ps1-Ps2 era, and even then they ended the bad feelings by releasing Final Fantasies for the Gamecube and GBA. By now though a lot of the developers who worked on Mario RPG have been done with making games for a long while, so as much as I'd like it to and as much as I like Square, I'm not sure it'd be as good as we think it would be.
+Trakker1985 Considering they've got a bunch of other Mario RPG series, like Paper Mario and Superstar Saga, it probably won't happen. Maybe Mallow, Geno, or Smithy will show up, though.
+Trakker1985 If you're setting up yourself for disappointment, so am I because that's what I was expecting after Cloud was in Smash. I thought Geno would finally make it in Smash Bros but that was Mii costume. If a Mario RPG 2 does happen, the news will excite me more than System Shock 3 did.
My older brother bought a SNES just for this game. I was 8 at the time and he let me play - I fell instantly in love. It was my first RPG but it's still my favorite - FAVORITE - game of all time. So many fond memories!
This is one of the best games in the world to me. I got it a long time ago for cheap when Playstation 1st came out and my local Block Buster was getting rid of Snes games and Sega games for cheap. It was the 1st RPG i ever played. I got interested in RPG's from watching my friend play Final Fantasy Seven for the Ps1 which i now own too. So when i saw a Mario RPG i knew i had to buy it.
The original characters from this game need to come back in some capacity. Geno and Mallow are fan favorites (especially Geno)! There's so much potential here to explore.
It was Kaiser Dragon in Japanese, though. So it seems there's already a precedent for switching to a different variation of that word. (Caesar, Czar, Kaiser all come from the same root: Julius Caesar)
I swear that as a kid I read in Nintendo power that one of the features planned for the game was the ability to jump on enemies. If you did it just right, it would skip the battle entirely and still grant the player experience points. I have never been able to find this information since and I was hoping that it would come up here. But I guess I'm just crazy.
Did you know? Culex is also the name of a genus of mosquito. Knowing this fact will have literally zero effect on how well you fight against this boss.

+Blonic Rainboom I can ask the same reason why we went from masterpieces like the NES Marios and Super Mario World to the very same-y and mediocre "New" series.
EdmacZ Take it this way. The first pizza you had was a masterpiece, a genius work. Who came up with this succulent food, but after the 100th pizza, yeah, now its junk food.
Did you also know This is the first Mario game with some Toads being identified as females prior to recurring ones like Toadette who was later introduced in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! in 2003.
you missed someting big about Geno that was removed in the final releases "The Beta Geno Whirl" s256.photobucket.com/user/Yakibomb/media/GenoWhirl.png.html The caption says "The Geno Whirl special Attack works particulary well againts undead enemies."This screen shot came from Nintendo Power volume 82. What is intersting is it says the special is good againts undead enemies, but this bonus is shown nowhere in the battle scripts. I guess it went with the idea that Geno is divine entity from the Star Road, and that the undead in Final Fantasy games are usually weak to holy. Probably scrapped because because that kind of association doesn't really seem to fit in the Mario universe.
I didn't even know about this game until I bought the SNES Classic and it was on there. It was such a pleasant surprise to find a game made by 2 of my favorite developers of all time in their prime.
Theme of Booster called "Any My Name Is Booster" sounds like "The Revels - Comanche". It's the music played during the infamous pawn shop rape scene in Pulp Fiction.
This is the Mario+Rabbids of its day. Two companies team up to make a completely new Mario experience most people laughed at when they first heard, but both games are great.
Remake is finally here 🥹 Geno will no longer just be known as a “Most Wanted Smash Inclusion anymore” and lots of other characters like Mallow, Boshi, Booster, Valentina, Etc. will gain new fans

+Kohii kawaii I'd think that Miyamoto doesn't want two similar Mario RPGs coexisting, because aside from a few differences, the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games are too similar in structure to each other. You're basically picking either party members or the brothers.
+DKen2021 It's not just that Paper Mario isn't an rpg anymore, but mostly any kind of charm and originality the Mario rpgs had is being stripped away in favor of boring nsmb play it safe garbage. I want "Did you know Did you know Gaming"
One of the most influential games of the decade. I'm still sad that Geno didn't end up in many other games.
Did You Know? Now everyone knows that Culex's Theme comes from FF.
Has been and always will be one of my absolute favorite games of all time. Also, never occurred to me that Punchinello was referencing James Bond... but that's literally the only fact I hadn't heard before. Otherwise great work!
How the fuck did we go from this masterpiece to fucking Colour Splash?
+Blonic Rainboom Because Square went the Sony route
+Blonic Rainboom
I can ask the same reason why we went from masterpieces like the NES Marios and Super Mario World to the very same-y and mediocre "New" series.
EdmacZ
Take it this way. The first pizza you had was a masterpiece, a genius work. Who came up with this succulent food, but after the 100th pizza, yeah, now its junk food.
+Blonic Rainboom Miyamotos going senile or something man.
+Blonic Rainboom Because suddenly Miyamoto's expressed a distaste for story, personality, or anything interesting.
Super Mario RPG was probably the first game I was obsessed with completing, looking for that dang Casino in middle school.
ONE OF MY FAV GAMES EVER
Sup
PalmTree457 Just youtubing you?
+Bulba Tube I guess
Did you also know
This is the first Mario game with some Toads being identified as females prior to recurring ones like Toadette who was later introduced in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! in 2003.
Hilarious mispronunciation of "czar".
Happy 25th anniversary, SMRPG!
you missed someting big about Geno that was removed in the final releases "The Beta Geno Whirl" s256.photobucket.com/user/Yakibomb/media/GenoWhirl.png.html The caption says "The Geno Whirl special Attack works particulary well againts undead enemies."This screen shot came from Nintendo Power volume 82.
Did you know? Sticker Star was a mistake.
+Mr. Waffle the 2nd True
Did you know? That is not true!
+FTSDude69 oh
+Mr. Waffle the 2nd Yes, we heard the other 100 times.
+FrankTheExperiencedSmashPlayer It ruined the paper Mario rpg series
I love SMRPG. It's one of the RPGs on the Super Nintendo that I enjoyed over and over again. Good times.
This game got me into RPGS
same. i had no idea what and RPG was or what the 'RPG' in the title even stood for, but the game sucked me right in and changed my life forever
2:30 I hope 🤞🏻 that Luigi becomes the “5th” party member in the upcoming Switch remake. 🙏🏻😌
4:09 isnt that kirby also next to samus?
+ChiliSniper +DidYouKnowGaming?
+ChiliSniper or Birdo; hard to tell.
+ChiliSniper That's a Peach doll. You can see it there:
www.nindb.net/snes/super-mario-rpg/img/cameos/boosterstoybox_th.png
RosbifChaud hahah thanks for that :D It really looked like kirby
20 years later its still my all time favorite game
I’d love a remake of this masterpiece on switch if it were done correctly
Well...
Your comment aged like
🍷
Remake is finally here 🥹
Geno will no longer just be known as a “Most Wanted Smash Inclusion anymore” and lots of other characters like Mallow, Boshi, Booster, Valentina, Etc. will gain new fans
Age like wine, this did.
I guess we got what we wanted holy shit.
Bowser giving the "Up Yours" gesture would have been perfectly in character.
First time I played Mario RPG I played for 8 hours straight!
I pissed my pants from JOY!
My dad still makes fun of me about it :(
Wtf... U PISSED UR PANTS!?😂😂😂😂
2KplayerFTW! shhhh ;)
+Skitzophrenic I just got to the mushroom kingdom
LMAO
Joy, eh? Not from lack of using a bathroom?
One of my favorite games of all time, I replayed it too many times on my Snes.
czar is pronounced "zar" not "ceasar"
+Space Nicolas Cage
The MEANING isn't wrong, but the pronunciation still is. Czar is not meant to be pronounced as ceasar. It's supposed to be pronounced as zar.
holy moly i adored this game as a child.
This video has made my weekend! And I haven't even seen it yet.
Same here, this is the most amazing game I've ever experienced!
+Rodrigo Andrés You must have really low standards for a weekend if a factoid video makes yours.
+Sean Orion I couldn't agree more
+meowskull it's actually you that has lower standards for a weekend if you have nothing better to do than to roam around Mario videos bashing people like a prick acting like an expert on how to enjoy a weekend
Carl Bloke You're saying that taking 20 seconds out of my weekend to post a comment on a youtube video dictates the standards of my weekend. Because, you know, reasons. You're really grasping for anything aren't you, lol.
I need another game like this, a sequel, a remake, something!
This is the best Mario game ever!!!
This and Superstar Saga are my favorite Mario games.
It's like Miyamoto has taken a complete 180 on Mario rpgs now...
+Genericdude No he hasn't? Modern Mario RPGs still feature mario attacking with jumps and hammers.
+ItsJustApollo he means how out of the way things have gotten doing things that are gimmicky and not mario rpg style
Honestly I could live with another Super Paper Mario if it meant we got the interesting story and characters back.
+Genericdude oh come on Super Paper Mario wasn't bad. It was great. But I see why people were mad about sticker star and color splash
Geno's Woods is forever stuck into my head, likely because that's the time I spend trying to figure out how to get out of that place.
now it's stuck in mine too.. thanks
Geno should of been in Smash Bros Wii u
Yes!!!
No.
He is, tho
As a [DLC] Mii Fighter Costume. :^)
He gets recognition as a Mii Costume and in the final presentation his song "Fear the forest mushrooms" play in that presentation.
Yes!
2:27 Awww
2:53 Funny thing is I didn't know this until many years later. I wouldn't be surprised if it was past 2010 when I first found out.
3:45 Wait it is? I thought it was an evil Yoshi.
Isn't Czar just pronounced Zar?
+Hwarming Yeah, that bugged me too
This is one of my favorite games of all time. I really wish it got remade or rebooted
IT'S BACK LET'S GOOOO
THANK YOU!!! This was my favorite game on the SNES growing up, and I still run through it about once a year.
Let's get Joel from Vinesauce to do an episode over JoJo's Bizarre Adventure games!
+DioGiorno That's actually a pretty good idea
the Bowser poem is very heart felt. I didn't know he could be like that
PLEASE, Do Shadow The Hedgehog
PLEASE!!!!!
I preffer Sonic Heroes or Colors or CD.
+Agustin Leguiza I agree
+Agustin Leguiza i preffer sonic unleashed
legomaster we need this
Press 1 if you suffer from autism.
Watching this while playing the Super Mario RPG remake.
Based
HEY WE KNOW THAT WE MIGHT STILL SEE A SUPER MARIO RPG 2
We already have though it's called paper Mario
MrX626 THAT DOSE NOT COUNT AT ALL
+Ali Bafahmi BUT IT WAS CALLED SUPER MARIO RPG IN DEVELOPMENT THOUGH
+Ali Bafahmi WHY ARE WE YELLING?!
+MrX626 LOUD NOISES!!!
After almost 3 decades of waiting, we finally get a well deserved remake. Never thought it would happen but here we are.
Am I the only one who thought Kirbopher (Chris Niosi) was gonna cover this game?
I have a feeling Geno's going to get more recognition now.
Still waiting for Super Mario RPG to come to the Virtual Console, though.
+bigevilworldwide1 Its on the Wii's virtual console if not mistaken...so I don't see the problem in releasing it on the Wii U
+bigevilworldwide1 Surprisingly, this game is available on the Wii U eShop in Europe.
I wouldn't have minded Bowser doing an "Up Yours" gesture at the end of every battle. That actually seems like THE Bowser thing to do.
