In this episode we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Super Mario RPG was birthed from an unpresedented collaboration between Square and Nintendo. The game has similarities to other Square RPGs (such as Final Fantasy) with a story and action-based gameplay derived from the Mario franchise. The game was welcomed with critical acclaim, and was praised for its pseudo-3D graphics. The game spawned both the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi sub-series', both of which put their own spin on the Mario RPG formula.

Fun fact: When the boss Belome swallows Princess "Toadstool" he comments that she tastes 'peachy', an obvious nod to her Japanese name which was lost on most American gamers at the time since the name didn't come into common use in the US until Super Mario 64 came out.

Speaking of bosses, I enjoyed how Culex's text, at least in English, makes sly references to how he's a 2D guy in a (ostensibly) 3D world-that he's _"crossed into this dimension"_ and that SMRPG's _"world is uninhabitable"_ for his kind, forcing him to remain in a 2D-background pocket realm. I'm glad the video took some time to show that!

Spoilers incoming.
In the remake, he even questions in the first dialogue, how Mario is 3-D, and he wants that power. When you beat him, you have the ability to re-fight him later in the game as post game content. Guess how he appears? In full fledged 3-D.
I LOOOVE this game. It's a shame the world only got one Mario RPG from Square and Nintendo. Just imagine how could the sequel could have been.

+PeanutButterGamer The closest thing we got to a "real" Mario RPG 2 was Superstar Saga, but it changed quite a lot of the formula. I was hoping for a full-3D sequel on the n64 as a child, perhaps with graphics similar to that of Mario64, but sadly it never came.

It's crazy how many games Miyamoto has changed. So many people have come to him, presenting their work and he tells them to change it and it usually ends up being an amazing choice for their game. He truly is Nintendo's golden boy, I have no idea where the company would be without him.

***** Oh my god, you wouldn't believe. The "story" is Bowser kidnaps Peach, with no substance in between except for paper and sticker puns, generic Toad NPCs and enemy types, and a Navi clone that only gives GOOD hints less than half the time because the game's puzzles and general structure is so cryptic you can't play through it at all without a walkthrough.
And as for Color Splash? It aims to do all that over again since Sticker Star is the "new standard" for Paper Mario.

_ NJC _ Geno actually has a surprisingly good shot at being added in Smash 5. Sakurai has said he not only likes the character, but also considered adding him to both Brawl and Smash 4. Additionally, Geno has plenty of moves that would make him completely unique, another thing Sakurai likes.
Super Mario RPG has by far the best music of any Mario game and easily makes it into a top 5 best sound tracks from the SNES era... Somewhere with Gradius 3 and Chrono Trigger.

329link Johnny Jones is a shark pirate. He's huge, grizzled, scarred, and lives with his crew of shark pirates in a haunted ship. He's laid claim to one of the Star Pieces, but when Mario fights his way through his crew, he begins a standard boss battle: him and a couple of nameless mooks vs you and your party. Halfway through the fight, though, he challenges Mario to a 1-on-1, the only battle in the game (except Valentine's fight) where one character leaves the rest of the party to fight on their own. The pirates and your buds stand back and Mario duels Johnny. Mario wins, obviously, and takes the Star Piece back to Seaside Town, where Yaridovich, a spearman from Smithy's world, is revealed to have replaced all the townspeople with his minions. He tortures them until Mario gives up the Star Piece, then makes a retreat, only to be stopped by Johnny fucking Jones, coming out of the water. He lets Mario do the honors of kicking Yari's ass, then heads back into the sea, leaving Mario a note that calls him a pal.

That's pretty awesome that they ended up pretty much getting every decision right during the development. IIt's a truly wonderful game and it's funny to think Square just wanted to do a by the numbers JRPG with a Mario skin, but Nintendo were able to challenge them and together they made a truly great game. It's a shame Square and Nintendo haven't collaborated more over the years.
If they kept doing that, Paper Mario wouldn't be dead now...

Did You Know, an HD remake of Super Mario RPG was revealed in the Nintendo Direct on June 21, 2023, with a release date of November 17?
This was easily one of my most favorite games on the Super Nintendo. I kept trying to convince myself as a kid/teen that this game was dumb because it was an RPG based around the goofy characters and world of Mario.. but as I got older I realized that everyone else who had played this game loved it too. It was just a great game that was well designed all around. Also it was probably one of my favorite RPG's ever because of the awesome combat system. I was always sad that other RPG's didn't take the same approach as this game and let you do button timing to gain more damage or to defend mid combat and take less damage, or even have a chance at getting an extra item!
Agreed. Except I always loved it from day 1. I remember the first Mario and Luigi sorta did include the timed button sequences during the fights (it was the only one I played in that series)

Wait, they wanted to make a SMRPG 2, but it broke down after square leaned away from Nintendo. but now they have put Cloud in smash, and there are rumblings that Dragon Quest 11 and FF15/7remake might be on NX too... Are they getting friendly again, so then perhaps, maybe? a Sequel?

+Trakker1985 They've been on good terms for a long time now. They were only on bad terms when Square went to Sony throughout the Ps1-Ps2 era, and even then they ended the bad feelings by releasing Final Fantasies for the Gamecube and GBA. By now though a lot of the developers who worked on Mario RPG have been done with making games for a long while, so as much as I'd like it to and as much as I like Square, I'm not sure it'd be as good as we think it would be.
+Trakker1985 Considering they've got a bunch of other Mario RPG series, like Paper Mario and Superstar Saga, it probably won't happen. Maybe Mallow, Geno, or Smithy will show up, though.
+Trakker1985 If you're setting up yourself for disappointment, so am I because that's what I was expecting after Cloud was in Smash. I thought Geno would finally make it in Smash Bros but that was Mii costume. If a Mario RPG 2 does happen, the news will excite me more than System Shock 3 did.

This is one of the best games in the world to me. I got it a long time ago for cheap when Playstation 1st came out and my local Block Buster was getting rid of Snes games and Sega games for cheap. It was the 1st RPG i ever played. I got interested in RPG's from watching my friend play Final Fantasy Seven for the Ps1 which i now own too. So when i saw a Mario RPG i knew i had to buy it.
My older brother bought a SNES just for this game. I was 8 at the time and he let me play - I fell instantly in love. It was my first RPG but it's still my favorite - FAVORITE - game of all time. So many fond memories!

The original characters from this game need to come back in some capacity. Geno and Mallow are fan favorites (especially Geno)! There's so much potential here to explore.

The Axem Ranger boss fight is probably my favorite.
I remember as a 10 year old thinking, "wow this is really bad ass" when they introduced themselves right into the fight
I was afraid that these facts would be some that I already heard from other outlets, but these were all very unique. I liked how they chose the fighting style. Thanks for the six minutes of knowledge. You just got rid of fractions in my mind due to lack of space.
There's also an enemy called Hidon which is a boss in both SMRPG and FF6.
And I'm pretty sure Locke Cole from FF6 has a wish in Star Hill saying he wants to be the best treasure hunter in the world.

Super Mario RPG will always have a special place in my heart, because it was literally the first JRPG I ever played, and was the game that got me hooked into this genre ever since!
I really wish Square and Nintendo did a sequel or even a remake of this game, using the same gameplay aspects, but with updated features.

Boy did I love this game. I remember when I FINALLY defeated that hidden boss. I legit cried, cuz it took me so many freaking hours trying to figure out ways to kill him. My brother was so jealous too, 'cuz he used gameshark to cheat and beat him lol. That bit about Geno though, that's incredible shocking considering how many people have wanted him in SSB for years...I still dream of that day when I can actually PLAY as Geno and not dressed as him..

I didn't even know about this game until I bought the SNES Classic and it was on there. It was such a pleasant surprise to find a game made by 2 of my favorite developers of all time in their prime.
you missed someting big about Geno that was removed in the final releases "The Beta Geno Whirl" s256.photobucket.com/user/Yakibomb/media/GenoWhirl.png.html The caption says "The Geno Whirl special Attack works particulary well againts undead enemies."This screen shot came from Nintendo Power volume 82. What is intersting is it says the special is good againts undead enemies, but this bonus is shown nowhere in the battle scripts. I guess it went with the idea that Geno is divine entity from the Star Road, and that the undead in Final Fantasy games are usually weak to holy. Probably scrapped because because that kind of association doesn't really seem to fit in the Mario universe.

I swear that as a kid I read in Nintendo power that one of the features planned for the game was the ability to jump on enemies. If you did it just right, it would skip the battle entirely and still grant the player experience points. I have never been able to find this information since and I was hoping that it would come up here. But I guess I'm just crazy.

This is the Mario+Rabbids of its day. Two companies team up to make a completely new Mario experience most people laughed at when they first heard, but both games are great.

+Israel1948 TO be fair, so does "Kaiser." In fact, iirc, caesar is pronounced "kaiser" in latin, or at least fairly close.

This and Superstar Saga are my favorite Mario games.
I wouldn't have minded Bowser doing an "Up Yours" gesture at the end of every battle. That actually seems like THE Bowser thing to do.
