Happy 21st Birthday, Super Mario RPG! This was the first role-playing game I ever beat. I have so many fond memories of the game. Making this episode was an absolute joy. My goal is that if you have not played this game, watching the video will convince you to give it a shot. Enjoy!

Madara Senpai It's rough on us. Sure you can buy an everdrive, repoduction cart and that stuff, but the quality cart is expensive. Being a kid living in Peru in the early 90's, I remember getting this game when I was 8 and I was literally the only person who owned it back then. None of my friends thought it was fun. I loved this game with all my heart and all these years later I am SO HAPPY it became a classic.
I used to rent this game every weekend. Then one day it wasn't there anymore and I was heart broken. Only to discover my cousin bought the game from the store. We played through it countless times together after that.
Yo lo compré en la cachina a 100 soles, fui con mi viejito. De ahí cuando cerraron los blockbusters estuvieron vendiendo sus casettes de super nintendo y encontré el mario rpg a 10soles y me lo llevé en una.
I like that when Square wanted to put traditional medieval weapons in, Nintendo was firm in saying that such things don't belong in the Mario world. So the villain of the game is someone who wants to bring traditional medieval weapons into the Mario world.
Indeed! I have the game on my shelf of Snes collections. I had go give a fortune for it (yeah, more than the Snes Mini is woth). The best part is that I never got the chance to play it as a kid because it was never released in Europe. So I got a big and epic adventure ahead of me.
Ain’t gonna lie, this game was one of my first RPGs, and up until now, I’m still timing a button press with each attack on a turn-based RPG. Old habits die hard I guess.
@@MatticusFinch1820 I have been doing this all these years later, too. I did it through every Pokemon game I played, and all other turn based games. I have no idea if it works in any that I've played, but since Mario RPG was my first RPG ever, I just assumed throughout my life that its what you were supposed to do lol
This game got me into RPGs. I thought it was going to be another Mario game when I rented it, but it blew all expectations away. The soundtrack was a pure stroke of genius all the way through.
Same for me but with Paper Mario 1 and 2 but sadly on every other Mario RPG video I saw it was full of people who LOVE the Mario RPGs but couldn't even care for Square, Final Fantasy or Turn Based RPGs so for them the Mario RPGs is the only type of RPGs they enjoy and honestly when it comes to Super Mario RPG vs TTYD and the Mario and Luigi series I remember a reddit comment that honestly describes it well "People who love the Mario franchise will enjoy TTYD or Mario and Luigi more People who love JRPGs and Final Fantasy and don't mind a bit of Mario will enjoy Super Mario RPG more M&L and TTYD feels like a Mario game while Super Mario RPG feels like a Square game" and for me when it comes to Mario RPGs I prefer Super Mario RPG now because I feel like the pacing feels better in RPG compared to other Mario RPGs like TTYD where I feel it kinda holds your hand a bit for me my favorite JRPGs is kinda a tossup between EarthBound and Final Fantasy IX for me rn but may change over time
Yeah, I played it back in the 90s, I think we rented it or a friend had it. I thought "RPG" meant rotated-plane graphics or something, referring to the isometric camera angle. So when I realized it was turn based combat I lost interest and didn't play much more. Now that I'm older and have more experience with RPGs in general I really want to play it, which I can do on my SNES mini.
I always preferred to kill Magus with Frog as what I seen as serving him the justice he deserved for his crimes against the people and to Glenn and capping off that story arc nicely with a personal duel. My choice to end the story with Magus getting murked - he had to after being there and shooting off his mouth about Crono
Man, I was 7 years old when this game released. Forest Maze is still one of my favorite tracks of all time. This game and Poke'mon Red/Blue definitely got me into JRPGs as a late 90s kid.
I remember distinctly seeing a sealed copy of Super Mario RPG in a bargain bin in Toys 'R' Us for like $10 or $20 years ago. Who would have known such a collector's item would rack up a high price nowadays. A very unique and interesting artifact in time, this game.
+Random Person - You're the noob, kid. TH-cam videos only affected the more obscure hidden gems like Star Tropics. Practically all flea markets and used game stores just check eBay to see how much a game is worth. Ebay scalpers and repro cart producers saw the videos and increased their prices. Before eBay, you could even find things like Chrono Trigger for 10 bucks used.
THEGREATMAX You tube affected ALL video games prices, there were more sought after games before the spike like back in the old funco days (Google it) they were hard to find because they were sitting in some kids old closet or mom's basement the prices weren't insane, it was just crazy to pay extra cash of that era for a specific game you wanted, gotta remember all this "retro" tech was considered obsolete. eBay didn't make game prices spike people watching TH-cam videos and going " oh ya I'd like to play that guess I'll check eBay",I bought a copy of wild guns at a pawn shop for five bucks in 2006 lmao.
or if you would have read 20 mins daily (of something useful), you would have a incorruptible, more valuable knowledge, rather than a piece of plastic worth a few pretty dollars
Super Mario RPG has always been amore expensive than th average game so it was never really dirt cheap. Other examples are the Deagon Warrior sequels on NES. Never have been dirt cheap (but their prices hasn't gone up thatmuch compared to other stuff which is sort of funny).
I'm sure the designers were giggling behind his back. "Make it fun? Thanks genius, we didn't think of that. Here I thought we were making an unfun game. Good thing you were here to point us in the right direction."
@varkey42 Because there were different laws about videogames. And in Europe, at the time, the console worked at 50hz due to PAL standard, so gameplay was slower but, at least they could fix music timing. At the time release an rpg in europe in only english language was not a wise idea, because many countries can't understand an heavy spoken game. In fact till Final Fantasy 7 jrpg were not popular in Italy, because the first gaming generation of children (born in the at the start of 80's) didn't know enough well english until late 90's and the localization in italian language was a rarity. I suppose it is the same for other non english countries.
I'd say Paper Mario is probably a spiritual sequel in one way, while Mario+Luigi is a spiritual sequel in a different way. Like Mario+Luigi leveraged more of the timing based attacks, while reducing the party to just Mario and Luigi. Paper Mario took the "collect 7 magical plot devices" storyline, and party system in another direction. Overall however, I would want to see a proper Super Mario RPG 2. Paper Mario seems to have completely lost it's way as of Sticker Star, (Super Paper Mario lost the art direction, Sticker star lost the combat direction entirely.) I have all of these RPG's. But the Super Mario RPG is still the best one, with 1000 year door and SuperStar Saga probably being the best versions of their respective series.
Once as a kid I woke up Christmas morning to find this under the Christmas tree. I was so confused. I had no idea what this game was. Little did I know what masterpiece I had before me. Still to this day as an adult I haven't lost hope for a sequel!
Preach. When SMRPG came out, I was well into high school and had kind of lost interest in the Mario franchise, but this one really captivated me. It really had a way of triggering my brain's reward center, as there were all sorts of cool permanent power ups and pieces of equipment to find if you were thorough. The combat system was slick. The story was interesting, too: It sort of takes a left turn at the end and gets a bit dark. It's a shame Geno never became an iconic character; he's a total badass.
This is on of my favorite games of all time. Very underrated. It seems like a lot of people didn't get a chance to play it. I loved the history. I knew it was a collab but the extra details are awesome!
Game isn't underrated, but at this point it might be a little more obscure than it should be for young fans who weren't alive to see the N64 or the GameCube's release, let alone the SNES'. A version on the Switch SNES library would be interesting
@@JustDisc my parents bought this one for me and this was and probably is my fav game,, i replayed it about 5 years ago and i wasnt able to beat the Sword Boss
i rented it before buying and the save file on the game was at the axem rangers, they kicked my ass so i tried a different save file and that was the sunken ship where i had to guess the password "pearls"i had no internet in 96 by the way so finally i just started a new game and was hooked!
@Tee Bo Earthbound is NOT a Meh. At least almost everyone liked it and remembered it bc of Undertale. And besides, Earthbound is not a dead franchise. It is a FINISHED...franchise, by Itoi.
3 RPG's defined my childhood and cemented my life-long love of RPG's, those are Final Fantasy III (VI), Chrono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG. To this day I still own SMRPG for the SNES, and still have the official Nintendo Players Guide for the game. It's a fantastic game, and I always wished it got a sequel, because the world and characters that they constructed were incredible.
Back in the day I DL all the emulators and Roms from limewire, I had a folder for SnEs9x that I named legends it had 4 Games SMRPG, Chorno Trigger, Earthbound, Zelda ALTTP later added FF III(VI) Superstar saga is also awesome, great find for me
Same. And I'm 42. And superstar saga is a great game, but not better. Earthbound, FF4, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and Mario rpg will always be top 6 for me.
My wife and I are playing this classic from my childhood and its amazing to watch someone fall in love with it all over again. it really is a masterpiece, and so easy for a layman to get into.
This game is just legendary! It’s fun, funny, vibrant, brilliant, eerie, exciting, addicting... it absolutely hits on all chords. One of the best RPG’s ever made. THE best in the 90s
I got this game for my birthday in June 1996 and I remember playing the heck out of it. I have so many fond memories of this game, and enjoyed every single bit of it. Every once in awhile I'll break out my old SNES and play a few games, and this will always be my top.
I turned 18 in the fall of 1996, SMRPG was the last new game I'd sunk weeks of gameplay into over that summer. So, appropriately, the game was the last one of my childhood. What a great game to end on.
Wow I forgot that I had played this game until I saw the gameplay. Instant nostalgia. My older cousin was obsessed with this, and I watched them play when I was 4-5 years old. They eventually got into programming at a very young age and had made their own RPG at 11 or 12 - never appreciated how impressive that was until years later. Unfortunately they distanced themselves from family while going through a personal transition, moving to SV as a young adult. I haven't seem them in 15 years, but always wish I could have congratulated them on what they've been able to achieve following their passion and convictions. Proud of you, CF. Hope to see you again one day.
you should do earthbound that game has a pretty rich history... being completely rewritten from the ground up solely by satoru iwata in his spare time and all that
Ronald Reagan Hahahahaha no it's not even close to being the best game of all time. It's good but a small ravenous fan base loves to hype it up like it's the pinnacle of gaming.
This game was so brilliant. Who didn't love Princess Peach with her slap attack and frying pan? Also the story of Johnny is endearing. Additionally, Mallow is adorable.
@@billblaski9523 The funny thing is, Luigi has a brief little cameo in the end credit sequence. He's leading the victory parade, lol. Nary a sight of him, otherwise.
You did an incredible job on this episode. This is my absolute favorite game of all time, best 8th birthday present and has some of the greatest music Yoko Shimomura has ever composed. I would not be the musician I am today if it weren't for this game. Awesome content man
I remember this as a kid. I loved Mario and JRPGs, so when this came out I had to have it. And I loved it. It was unique, but didn't stray too far from the world built by the previous Mario games. Definitely an unlikely hit and loads of fun.
Yeah, as a kid me and my friends would laugh at that and find it really funny. But nowadays people think that having stuff like that in videogames is gonna turn kids into sexual predators or something. Now, excuse me, i gotta play with my masturbator 3000 blowup doll with triple speed switch.
When I first played it, I didn't understand it. Oddly enough, I didn't get into it until after I played FF6 and Chrono Trigger. Then I absolutely fell in love with it.
This is easily one of my favorite games of all time. This was the game I played as a child that made me love rpgs. I wish that this would get a port to the switch as I don’t have a super nes anymore
This game was the very reason I even got into RPG's in the first place. I mean, I'm sure I would have eventually anyway, but since this was the very first RPG experience I ever had, it will always hold such a special place in my heart. (I know. I'm a bit blinded by nostalgia. lol) My absolute favorite RPG of all time, and my 2nd favorite game of all time. (The Legend of Zelda: ALTTP will always be my baby, but that's for another conversation/comment section. Haha) Mario RPG has the spotlight here! I'm a little late, but Happy Birthday Mario RPG! I feel a celebratory play through in the works! =D
I paid too much have this cartridge after I Lost it as a kid. My first RPG, I completed it over at a friends house. Stoked to hear it's history. Lotta stuff that could've only happened then.
Mr.Gamzrbad sometimes I can't remember if I owned this game or not years after it came out. I may have bought it for $40-$60 back in early 2000's back when game collecting wasn't really a thing and I was doing it before the Avgn and crap
Mr.Gamzrbad 8 years ago, I sold my copy of chrono trigger, with box and manual for $120. I wonder how much they're worth now. I played final fantasy 3 (vi in japan) but I've never owned a copy. my cousins did, and he still has it it's an awesome game. and I had a blast with super Mario RPG. it honestly was if Mario and final fantasy had a kid.
IT COULD HAPPEN NOW! We just saw Mario + Rabbids. Square is making FF15 for Switch. We could get a new SMRPG It is *NOT* something that could've only happened then
Looking at this game, it's amazing how far they were able to push the power of the SNES. While other companies were obsessed with bits and hardware add-ons for more processing power and bigger numbers, Nintendo focused on making great games with what they had. This game could give any 32 bit RPG (maybe a couple 64bit ones) a run for their money.
Muticere They have had plenty of time to do such a game in the intervening years. They had a falling out in regards to FFVII but have had plenty of other games on the various Nintendo systems over the years including ones in the FF series specifically for them (I know this for a fact because I own all of the games they have made and/or published for the Nintendo systems I own). Clearly they just don't want to.
I got it modded on my 3ds and it's even got a program for fast forwarding 5x speed, custom controls, save anywhere, frame rate adjust, and rapid fire with sensitivity adjustments. It's honestly what I play the most these days since sooo many of those games are from the golden age of gaming lol. And they look great, play great, and sound great. Hardly any problems with these emulations. It's fuckin awesome...
Great episode. Really hoping that Square's rekindled partnership with Nintendo might result in a true sequel to this game - despite not having an SNES, through the magic of emulation, this game was a big part of my childhood. :)
Love this game. Got mine from Blockbuster for 3 bucks when they were clearing out their SNES stuff for PS1 and Saturn. I still remember that LONG and crazy fight against Culex.
This game was really incredible. It opened a lot of young kids up to the RPG genre. It's also a rare game to find. I had a copy and ended up selling it to a local collector shop for $65 just a few years ago.
What a wonderful episode. I was overwhelmed with nostalgia while watching this, since this was the reason I bought a SNES back when I was a kid. I remember seeing this game and just being drawn in, and it's still one of my favorite games. It was interesting to hear the history behind the game, thanks for the work you do!
Seeing as how Square and Nintendo are great pals again during the Switch era, I would be surprised if Nintendo and Square aren't already working on a sequel to Super Mario RPG. Not to mention Square has opened up a brand new studio just for the development of Switch titles... Hmmm
Shoutout to my big bro, who introduced me as a young kid to "Dragon Warrior" (I'm in the us) and Final Fantasy 1... I remember staying up all night with him playing both titles.. I'll forever thank him for getting me into RPGs... hell, I learned to read at a really young age just so I could read about all the cool pictures I was seeing in his horde of D and D books
Remember reading about Super Mario RPG in UK's equivalent of Nintendo Power - Nintendo Official Magazine. So excited for it - but then it was cancelled and never came out....Thankfully things have changed for the better now and Europe gets the games at the same time as NA and JP
That's why emulators were such a godsend back in the late nineties and the early 2000s. Got to play dozens of games that wouldn't be released here for many years, Super Mario RPG for example. :P
This game changed gaming for me forever. Not only did it shifted my interests of gaming into RPGs I also perfected my English to better enjoy the stories of RPG games. Funny Mystic Quest inspired Mario RPG but it was Mario that brought me to play Mystic Quest. I enjoyed but Mario set a pretty high bar….but the PlayStation came and with it FF7 and FFT. I don’t like that Square went full hack and slash button mashing, is like they lost their soul but hey maybe just maybe now this game will have a proper sequel since the game is getting a remake!
Too many people gloss over that Bowser is a playable ally character. THIS my friends is what takes this game from GREAT to EPIC for me. Bowser has always been my favorite Mario character and probably my favorite Nintendo character, who doesn't love a cool dragon-like turtle brute. From the moment Bowser joins your party at Booster's Tower onward, this has been my favorite rpg game of all time, and only overshadowed by Super Metroid on my top list of SNES games. Praise Nintendo and Square for making my dreams come true, and allowing me to control what could contend for my favorite Ninentdo. And also getting to see a side of him, we rarely ever did in game before then.
This game is my absolute favorite among the Mario franchise. I think I enjoy it so much because it's a whole new unique take on the Mario world. Hell, when else are you going to find Mario and Bowser working together with Peach/Toadstool? I really wish Mallow and Geno would make a return. They were unique characters that, in my opinion, really added to the character of the game itself. I can't tell you how many times I rented this as a kid. Now, I can't tell you how many times I play it in emulators lol The mine kart mini-game was my absolute favorite. There was something about Moleville and Monstro Town that just made the game so amazing.
I just bought my Mario obsessed son this for Xmas, he has been asking to play it for years after I told him I had it way back when. To sit and go back through it on the switch with my boy is a dream come true 😎
I could talk about this game more, but all that's worth mentioning here is this game's seeming effect in my life as a crystallization of my childhood happiness, or an incarnation of it. Playing it, seeing it, hearing it - I'm instataneously happy. As time goes by, and my sensibilities and views and tastes and everything about me changes, and I get tired of other things, and then revisit them later, this game stays consistent; frozen in time as always being hip, always being loved, always being enjoyable. It must have just been the perfect time in my life to experience this type of game for the first time, be Mario, a beloved and hip childhood brand, and be this creative and enjoyable of a game. Even from the very first time I seen it in 1996 before I'd get to play it in 1998. I'm eternally a kid when I play this game. I'm not really a big fan of the indulgence of nostalgia, but I'll always love this game. And I'll love it more than Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger even after playing them
@@RPGFlare64 i'am going to play and mainly hype about forest maze remastered along with the culex fight again in glorious HD and the boss theme Final fantasy IV boss theme remix for the remake.
The first JRPG I ever played, and still easily one of the best. People praise Earthbound for being mature or whatever but I don't think it compares to Super Mario RPG in genuine character depth or quality dialogue. Hell, 99 percent of all JRPGs don't, really.
I owned this game on the SNES and it was the first RPG I ever played. I was in 4th or 5th grade when me and my brother bought it. This game brings back so much nostalgia.
I love that Square wanted to use Kirby, Link, and Wario, but Nintendo said no, so they used Mallow, Geno, and Booster. Booster is obviously the most thinly veiled.
This is probably the Mario game that I most wanted to play that I have still never played. I never had an SNES, we had a Genesis and it wasn't going to happen to have two systems that do the same thing (my parents logic, not mine). At the time I thought RPGs were boring, had I played this one, I'm sure I would have thought differently. Shortly after I did get into J-RPGs thanks to Final Fantasy 7, and backtracking to games that weren't boring after all.
I'm with you there... the SNES was my first console, and yet somehow I never played *any* JRPGs on it. (Perhaps people thought the games would be too complicated for me as a kid?) It wasn't until 2010 that I finally checked out games such as Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger (both of which I LOVED). Now I'm finally in the middle of a playthrough of Super Mario RPG, and yes, it is great so far. It's also making me curious about the Paper Mario and Mario/Luigi games.
Emulators work, or if you were lucky enough to pick up a SNES Classic Edition, it's on there too. Weirdly enough, I really haven't played it that much, so will probably go back and revisit it... at the time it was out originally, I was in high school, and more into the Final Fantasy series. I do like that it did spark interest in terms of future titles, was a big fan of Super Paper Mario and the handheld Mario & Luigi games as well.
Find this game and play it! Its battle system is the best of all turn-base systems in SNES, it’s graphics are the summit of the SNES, a perfect story and presentation, and is overall one of the funnest games of all time! PLAY IT!!!
Hello Norman Caruso/Gaming Historian!!! Love your videos!!! I just wanted to ask if you’ll ever do a video covering the original Zelda for the NES? It would be awesome to hear the origins of how that particular game was developed--getting an understanding of why the franchise to THIS day is still legendary. Also been trying to get into some Zelda games myself☺️😅Starting with the first one, of course. Thank you!!!
The biggest shafting of UK gamers in the history of Nintendo. Give us lots of screenshots and magazine spreads and then nothing. Meanwhile Sonic 3d was doing his thing looking great. I understand the translation for Europe being not a priority which is shame but a US English release was done and then you faced the issue of it playing correctly on some TV, converters and systems. Yes it would have been my first RPG but they really underestimated the demand for Mario.
They had an upcoming system that would likely have killed some of the buzz the game would have gotten. That's also a big reason why the West didn't get Earthbound Beginnings until a few years ago. There's also the issue of paying for multiple translators, which would have driven up costs.
At least you guys got Terranigma, the third game in the Soul Blazer series (along with Illusion of Gaia). We still haven't gotten a proper release of it over here.
Ahh I'm sorry you never got it :'( or original Dreamcast version of Shenmue 2 in the US. I still have Terranigma for the Snes, I didn't know how lucky I was.
This was my intro to rpgs. I never heard of them until I got that Nintendo power issue with mario rpg on the front. It's one of my favorite games of all time and I just played it on wii I last month.
Thanks to this gem of a game, not only I learned English, but also I became a RPG fan. So glad Nintendo is remaking Super Mario RPG for the Switch, can't wait to play it.
This is my absolute favorite Mario game! After World, I wasn't too interested in Mario games. This is still the case lol. Think I'll go play Legend of the 7 Stars again though.
I pick it up and play it again every few years still. It will be a classic forever and I suggest everyone plays it, so they know how RPG should be done. Was my #2 game on SNES, only surpassed by Super Metroid. Who needs Final Fantasy when you have Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars 10/10.
I got the same case of serendipity. I started playing Super Mario RPG for the first time a couple weeks after he posted this video, but I haven't been on TH-cam for a while so it wasn't until today that I saw he'd covered the game's history. It's mostly stuff I already knew about the game and Square's history, but there are some interesting new tidbits, like the fan vote on whether Mario should use a traditional RPG arsenal.
Happy 21st Birthday, Super Mario RPG! This was the first role-playing game I ever beat. I have so many fond memories of the game. Making this episode was an absolute joy.
My goal is that if you have not played this game, watching the video will convince you to give it a shot. Enjoy!

Dooooode!! Me too hahaha
Same
You can't convince me that times hits aren't secretly a thing in all rpgs
This game got me into RPGs. I thought it was going to be another Mario game when I rented it, but it blew all expectations away. The soundtrack was a pure stroke of genius all the way through.
Same for me but with Paper Mario 1 and 2 but sadly on every other Mario RPG video I saw it was full of people who LOVE the Mario RPGs but couldn't even care for Square, Final Fantasy or Turn Based RPGs so for them the Mario RPGs is the only type of RPGs they enjoy and honestly when it comes to Super Mario RPG vs TTYD and the Mario and Luigi series I remember a reddit comment that honestly describes it well
"People who love the Mario franchise will enjoy TTYD or Mario and Luigi more
People who love JRPGs and Final Fantasy and don't mind a bit of Mario will enjoy Super Mario RPG more
M&L and TTYD feels like a Mario game while Super Mario RPG feels like a Square game"
and for me when it comes to Mario RPGs I prefer Super Mario RPG now because I feel like the pacing feels better in RPG compared to other Mario RPGs like TTYD where I feel it kinda holds your hand a bit
for me my favorite JRPGs is kinda a tossup between EarthBound and Final Fantasy IX for me rn but may change over time
Hey mate. So I've got some good news to bring-
It's getting a proper remake.
@@Not_interestEd- brooooooo!
@@HarmonicWave lmao Yeah I remember thinking RPG was some kind of stylish title like GTX or something.
Ha! A Mario RPG? What's next? Disney Final Fantasy?

Woosh!
Super Mario RPG and Earthbound. Absolute pinnacle of my childhood gaming.
Earthbound has always been my favorite rpg but mario rpg is still in my top 5.
Earthbound got slept on.
Catching bowser crying outside his castle ...worth every dime
I always preferred to kill Magus with Frog as what I seen as serving him the justice he deserved for his crimes against the people and to Glenn and capping off that story arc nicely with a personal duel. My choice to end the story with Magus getting murked - he had to after being there and shooting off his mouth about Crono
What did Bowser do to that Chomp??
Watching bowser use Mario as a projectile weapon= perfection
@@Fudgaboutit Battling the tiny ass sensei was my favorite part lol

Man, I was 7 years old when this game released. Forest Maze is still one of my favorite tracks of all time. This game and Poke'mon Red/Blue definitely got me into JRPGs as a late 90s kid.
I was 15. And I agree with forest maze. Such an awesome piece of music.
THEY DID IT. THE REMAKE IS HAPPENING!!! FINALLY!!!

Too bad toys r us is going out business, and we can’t buy anything anymore from them once they do.
or if you would have read 20 mins daily (of something useful), you would have a incorruptible, more valuable knowledge, rather than a piece of plastic worth a few pretty dollars
Super Mario RPG has always been amore expensive than th average game so it was never really dirt cheap.
Other examples are the Deagon Warrior sequels on NES. Never have been dirt cheap (but their prices hasn't gone up thatmuch compared to other stuff which is sort of funny).
That moment when you realize that Yoko Shimomura has composed the soundtrack to virtually my entire childhood.
"Make it fun." That's why Miyamoto is the boss.
"Make it fun." And then, Sticker Star was released.
Shalakor 😭
I'm sure the designers were giggling behind his back. "Make it fun? Thanks genius, we didn't think of that. Here I thought we were making an unfun game. Good thing you were here to point us in the right direction."
Back when he couldn't miss
@varkey42 Because there were different laws about videogames. And in Europe, at the time, the console worked at 50hz due to PAL standard, so gameplay was slower but, at least they could fix music timing. At the time release an rpg in europe in only english language was not a wise idea, because many countries can't understand an heavy spoken game.
In fact till Final Fantasy 7 jrpg were not popular in Italy, because the first gaming generation of children (born in the at the start of 80's) didn't know enough well english until late 90's and the localization in italian language was a rarity. I suppose it is the same for other non english countries.
They should remaster this game for switch
Have Alpha Dream and Squareenix AND Nintendo all team up for a new Mario RPG or a remake/remaster
Agree, it's in my top 5 favorite games of all time, for any system.
Jon Awakens amen
A remaster for the 3DS would work, too!
Yeah remastered would be good. Because sony’s best selling games Crash and Spyro got remastered
Paper Mario seems to have completely lost it's way as of Sticker Star, (Super Paper Mario lost the art direction, Sticker star lost the combat direction entirely.)
I have all of these RPG's.
Well, you should see what happened in the recent Nintendo direct.
@@faheemabbas3965 Dreams do come true.
Relyea and super Mario rpg? Of course I had to like
Not underrated at all. Just watch the first minute of the video for proof.
Game isn't underrated, but at this point it might be a little more obscure than it should be for young fans who weren't alive to see the N64 or the GameCube's release, let alone the SNES'. A version on the Switch SNES library would be interesting
This game still holds up. Just completed it again because this video tickled my nostalgia.
Super Mario RPG was the very first game I bought with my own money. To date, it's still my most favorite.
You chose......wisely.
Probably because you bought it with your own money, which made it feel more valuable at the time

Superstar Saga is better
Back in the day I DL all the emulators and Roms from limewire, I had a folder for SnEs9x that I named legends it had 4 Games SMRPG, Chorno Trigger, Earthbound, Zelda ALTTP later added FF III(VI)
Superstar saga is also awesome, great find for me
Well, a remake was just revealed by Nintendo.

3 weeks late but I have come to bear fascinating news!
It's getting R E M A D E!
This is literally my all-time favorite game. Ever since playing it as a child on the SNES. I wish there was a proper sequel
Hope to see you again one day.
you should do earthbound
that game has a pretty rich history... being completely rewritten from the ground up solely by satoru iwata in his spare time and all that
Tate the 2nd Best game of all time

Much of the story about Mother (Earthbound) was covered very nicely by Roo from the "Clan of the Gray Wolf".
Lookit up, you might like that video.
Earthbound has been done nearly to death.
Why no Luigi tho?
@@billblaski9523 The funny thing is, Luigi has a brief little cameo in the end credit sequence. He's leading the victory parade, lol. Nary a sight of him, otherwise.

I remember this as a kid. I loved Mario and JRPGs, so when this came out I had to have it. And I loved it. It was unique, but didn't stray too far from the world built by the previous Mario games. Definitely an unlikely hit and loads of fun.
This is what got me into gaming as a kid. I'll always have a special place in my heart for this.

I played final fantasy 3 (vi in japan) but I've never owned a copy. my cousins did, and he still has it it's an awesome game. and I had a blast with super Mario RPG. it honestly was if Mario and final fantasy had a kid.

rpg is awesome
I feel the same way
Whenever I talked to people about this game in school as a kid, no one even heard of it, so I had no idea it was so popular
This game is great. They need to do a real sequel to this.
I love the Paper Mario series but would like to see another Square Enix one.
I can already picture it with Current Square.
Super Mario Hallway Simulator 13 Part 4 disc 2
Muticere They have had plenty of time to do such a game in the intervening years.
They had a falling out in regards to FFVII but have had plenty of other games on the various Nintendo systems over the years including ones in the FF series specifically for them (I know this for a fact because I own all of the games they have made and/or published for the Nintendo systems I own).
Clearly they just don't want to.
They should make a true sequel and also make Geno playable as dlc in Smash Bros
Intimidation well what would you think of Mario multiverse RPG?
I like how we’re all rewatching these videos because of the remake.
As a huge Mario fan, I can’t believe I haven’t played this game yet! I need to get into it soon!
It's pretty bad ass. Great music also.

So…did you play it yet?!
Oooo man...this is something you NEED to do..go NOW
Super Mario RPG 2 NEEDS to happen on the Switch!
It was going to happen on the N64, but Square Enix still owns the rights to it.

One of my favorite games of all time. excited for the remake but the og will always have my heart.
This was one of my absolute favorite games on SNES.
Had to rewatch this after the remake announcement!
Had to come back and re-watch this with the news of the Super Mario RPG remake coming out.
And now we are getting a remake...what a wonderful conclusion
Seeing as how Square and Nintendo are great pals again during the Switch era, I would be surprised if Nintendo and Square aren't already working on a sequel to Super Mario RPG. Not to mention Square has opened up a brand new studio just for the development of Switch titles... Hmmm
Maybe we'll also see Geno in Smash.
@@pirate_cove_man It´s probably not happening, there is plenty of other worth choices who own their right to appear in Smash, but the hope never dies.

Simply one of the most fun and timeless games ever
Shoutout to my big bro, who introduced me as a young kid to "Dragon Warrior" (I'm in the us) and Final Fantasy 1... I remember staying up all night with him playing both titles.. I'll forever thank him for getting me into RPGs... hell, I learned to read at a really young age just so I could read about all the cool pictures I was seeing in his horde of D and D books
This game is truly timeless. It’s better than most games to date.
Remember reading about Super Mario RPG in UK's equivalent of Nintendo Power - Nintendo Official Magazine. So excited for it - but then it was cancelled and never came out....Thankfully things have changed for the better now and Europe gets the games at the same time as NA and JP
jamesgillre yay! I would've been so mad had I not gotten this game as a kid. It was one of my favorites to rent every week back in the 90's on my Snes
yea I think it came to UK and Europe for the first time recently, 20 years after original release - the first UK release on virtual console
That's why emulators were such a godsend back in the late nineties and the early 2000s. Got to play dozens of games that wouldn't be released here for many years, Super Mario RPG for example. :P
Horzuhammer I remember the SA-1 chip was a bitch to emulate for the longest time tho...
Europe didn't get SMRPG and Earthbound, but they got Terranigma and US didn't
This game changed gaming for me forever. Not only did it shifted my interests of gaming into RPGs I also perfected my English to better enjoy the stories of RPG games.
Funny Mystic Quest inspired Mario RPG but it was Mario that brought me to play Mystic Quest. I enjoyed but Mario set a pretty high bar….but the PlayStation came and with it FF7 and FFT.
I don’t like that Square went full hack and slash button mashing, is like they lost their soul but hey maybe just maybe now this game will have a proper sequel since the game is getting a remake!
This game is also on the SNES Classic.
But not Switch SNES Online, those bastards.
Literally the ONLY reason I bought a snes classic
Only thing I can say to that is that the phrase "rpg game" does not work. It should be "RPG", as "Role-Playing Game Game" is stupid.
Bowser being playable was the hook that brought me into it and is one of the reasons this game ruled!
Andy Madden Next you’ll try to tell us that Detective Comics Comics is redundant 🙃
It kinda sucks that you can’t really play as yoshi
i cannot count how many times I have come back to watch this. Thank you for a fantastic video.
Playing with a buddy yesterday in 2019. Had it in my heart since Christmas 96. It's a amazing game. A all time great!
Now this is what I call a good video
I'm so happy that we are getting a remake of this classic game!
Now, I can't tell you how many times I play it in emulators lol
The mine kart mini-game was my absolute favorite. There was something about Moleville and Monstro Town that just made the game so amazing.
And six years after this video was posted, we have now gotten confirmation of a remake for Super Mario RPG.
I just bought my Mario obsessed son this for Xmas, he has been asking to play it for years after I told him I had it way back when. To sit and go back through it on the switch with my boy is a dream come true 😎
Is anyone else ready for the remake of this game!?
One of the best games of all time and from our childhood is actually being remade! And if it does really well they may make a sequel! What a dream 😭
And I'll love it more than Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger even after playing them
"In 1996, the world got to play..."
Well no, only Japan and America got to play... :-(
Oh well, at least we got Terranigma.
Better late than never, we finally got it in 2008 on the Wii virtual console. Or played it on an emulator in 2001.
Love this game! Wish they had done sequels....the Paper Mario's just aren't the same vibe for me. This was such a great universe
A REMAKE IS NOW HAPPENING

@@RPGFlare64 i'am going to play and mainly hype about forest maze remastered along with the culex fight again in glorious HD and the boss theme Final fantasy IV boss theme remix for the remake.
The first JRPG I ever played, and still easily one of the best. People praise Earthbound for being mature or whatever but I don't think it compares to Super Mario RPG in genuine character depth or quality dialogue. Hell, 99 percent of all JRPGs don't, really.

"Hey, man. Wanna buy a Mario drawing?"
I just snorted
Super Mario RPG was my first RPG experience. I been hooked since then
I owned this game on the SNES and it was the first RPG I ever played. I was in 4th or 5th grade when me and my brother bought it. This game brings back so much nostalgia.
I love that Square wanted to use Kirby, Link, and Wario, but Nintendo said no, so they used Mallow, Geno, and Booster. Booster is obviously the most thinly veiled.
where does this come from? did they say it at some point?
PLAY IT!!!
Ahahah i can totally relate my parents tought the same

Honestly Luigi U was an absolute blast to play if you like Mario World and running through levels fast.
@@richardg5301 that kinda goes with the "not interested" territory. I was more of a Megaman platformer.
I just bought this game a week ago, perfect time for historian to drop this video for me =)
Hehe
nice find, hold onto it tight, you'll kick yourself for the rest of your days if you let anything happen to a gaming gem of such splendor.
