  • A little over 16 months ago we purchased a slightly used 2016 Winnebago Travato 59G as an experiment to be our daily driver, get away camper van, and shuttle craft between bus and boat.
It's been awesome, and now after sharing lots about what we love in our van - it's time to share the things we don't like. Yup, sit back - this video is the 'Chris and Cherie Complain About Everything!' episode!

I had so many of the same issues when I was full timing in my RV. The RV industry designs their RVs for weekend camp outs and not full time use. Thus they use cheaper quality materials that don't last with full time use and have design limitations that you can put up with for a weekend camping trip but not if you are full timing.
I really wish a Full Time RV was designed and built with people who full time in mind with top quality materials that last along with smart uses of space.

Placement of the air conditioner over the bed seems to be a common thing in the RV industry. We had issue with the rear vent blowing down on us too. I removed the inside cover, and glued in a block of styrofoam to limit the adjuster knob travel. Once reassembled, the mod is invisible.
Our Dometic freezer hinges failed too, with less that two years of only occasional use. It seems the return springs are too strong for the plastic pivot points I was able to make an invisible, and permanent repair by regluing the cracked hinge, and encapsulating it in a steel sleeve, thereby making it impossible for the crack to reopen
We have lower level switches that we keep bumping too. A common solution is to install a C shaped drawer pull or cabinet pull over the switch. If the right pull is selected, it doesn’t look like a homemade solution

Great video, and spot on with your assessment! Seriously, how much would it have cost to use exterior components that wouldn’t rust so quickly, and better quality exterior speakers? At this price point, we would have happily paid a little extra. They have at least addressed the AC upgrade & sumo springs in the newer models. We have a 2019 KL, and we added the sumo and better AC ourselves. And I can’t tell you how much we LOVE the lithium package; never going back to a generator!

We have a 16 Travato G since new and I can say that most of the things you mentioned are things that we not interested in. Things like not having shelves in the closet, electric stove top and 3 way fridge aren’t issues with us, the are pluses. I will say the smoke alarm over the stove is a crazy place. Technology is always advancing, ie. quieter AC and generator. These things weren’t available when the 16G was built. Newer models have these advancements and they also have a bigger price tag. I have seen the price on G models go up over 50% since we bought ours. Our Travato has giving us 5+ years of fun with no issues.

You two are honest! Other TH-camrs are in cahoots with the manufacturer. For something that expensive, it should be better quality. Most try to get a free rv to use for up to a year. Or some kind of endorsement. The chassis that it is built on is the worse. I wish that the top two high end rv manufacturers would incorporate a total lithium system without loud generator in their vans. A few show flaws in their rigs and expensive repair bills but still say they will buy it again? Why? This is just my opinion. Thanks guys for this honest video.

They don't need to. Owners have forums and the guy that runs that product line attends rally's with these folks and takes seriously their input and many of the changes that have occured are from actual owners inputs. They make inprovement not just each years model but during the year s they feed those changes into the manufacturing line.

Well done and valid points, I could point out a few others as well. We started shopping for Travatos but we discovered many of the problems you highlighted but also not thrilled with outdated Ram PM and how it drives. Have not ruled a KL out but much more impressed with Coachmen Beyond especially with new builds now on 2020 Transit chassis, great safety features, better fit/finish with Coachmen. I recommend that you check out, they don't have a G config but their C plan may work for you. Their lithium system is not as robust as Volta but in some ways it is better, only one with UL approval and it can be expanded at reasonable cost.

@@oldhickory2064 I would be curious what your basis is for the post. While Winnebago has made several common after-market upgrades standard, I haven't heard anything about the "new build" materials, techniques, and quality issues being resolved at Winnebago on the Travato. If anything, I suspect they're pushing them out the factory door even faster given the current demand. I would love to know what Winnebago's profit margin is per Travato. I'm guessing it is upwards of 30%.

Totally accurate on the items you’ve pointed out. So many little items they could do better. (We are 2018 K owners). We replaced the AC with the Houghton (Ho-ton) from Adv RV. Best. Move. Ever. Even with the generator running, it’s 100% better. Worth the $3000 we spent on it.
On the front seat....the forward backward adjuster doesn’t allow you to turn it all the way around? Even with the back of the seat up straight?
Have you checked out the people who are selling on the TOWB FB group? Several people selling almost brand new vehicles.
You were in no way whining. Totally valid points!

Just happened to catch this 2-year-old video. Recently purchased a 2023 Travato 59G and they fixed all the problems you outlined. I purposely picked the G over the GL model as we don't use the AC much (or microwave) here in northern CA. It's got two AGM batteries that can be replaced with lithium and a 1000 watt inverter than runs most of my electronics. The few times I need a lot of power the new quiet inverter gas generator does the trick at 60 decibels. Sometime new is better.

I have a Dometic Fridge in my new travel trailer and I have the same problems. My door shelf for condiments broke off the first trip. It also is terrible when it is hot out. I installed a couple of extra fans on it to help it out. I never could get any help from Dometic so I’m thinking of replacing it with a new Furion 12 volt model. I usually camp with hook ups but solar will run the 12 volt model.

  • @oldhickory2064

A good deal of the things you mentioned are or have been corrected. Winnebago continues to mane improvements and changes during the year on this model. I own a 2017.5 Travato and in that one they made a bunch of improvements and one of the best was bringing the waterlines inside the coach. I read the newest models have a quieter AC and a quieter generator. They added dual pane windows as an option that fold out a couple years ago . They added a three point seat belt to the rear seats in the G model...as you can see they have made adjustments each year and many are based upon Customer inputs. The newest models are improving the insulation in the coach. As far as the Promaster thats all on RAM not Winnebago and every manufacturer that uses that unit has the same exact issues. Personally I think for a gas engine van with the weight it carries it gets extremely good mileage. We typically average between 18-21 MPG on our trips and they are not weekenders.

I love my Travato G 2017 and didn't want to watch your video, but I ended up agreeing with most of your design flaws. The A/C noise is my biggest complaint along with the generator. I recently had my generator fixed and I can not start it already. I have to cover the smoke detector when I cook any think even if I have the sliding door open and the vent blowing out on full speed. One think you did not cover is the heating pad on the holding tanks. Mine have started to peal off.

The biggest issue on the unit for us is the hitch. That was poorly designed and doesn't do what it's rated at based upon the way it's mounted to the chassis, folks with tire carriers, bike carriers, stow aways usually have to find a method to reinforce it for it to even come close to working without damaging the chassis.

We have a 2020 NPE GL. I believe the NPE is when they started putting in all the things that you want, except the awning (dual pane) windows (which we ordered). We did not get the built-in shade as it blocked my vision when driving. If you order, we went to Lichtsinn RV in Iowa to order (Nicole Blaser) so it had no miles & we could break in the engine. Good Luck in your search!

    • @Technomadia
      @Technomadia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The NPE does have some nice upgrades, but the 2020.5 and 2021 have a lot of them as well. We really don't like the exterior look of the NPEs however..

    • @steventoney4018
      @steventoney4018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm talking to both my local dealer and to Lichtsinn about ordering a Travato GL.. There are no more new NPFE coming -- so getting one of those now -- would likely be a used sale.... the NPFE had the fourth Volta lithium battery module -- like the upscale Boldt model.. The normal GL only has 3 battery modules.. it would be nice to be able to get one with the 4 modules -- but that currently does not seem possible
as noted the 2020.5 and 2021 models have all the NPFE things but the 4th battery module - the extra mobile solar panel and the floor mat.. only the fourth battery is a major thing for me.. even if it is not strictly a need - but a want..
There are no Travato Lithiums at dealers within a 1000 miles of me... Lichtsinn is about 1200 miles away.. talking with and emailing with Lichtsinn does show they are a top rate - honest dealer and I think our local dealer is consider a decent Winnebago dealer and service center.. I can not get a complete clear final order price with options from either dealer at the moment as they seem to be waiting for new price/option/option order sheets... This is likely related to the fact that orders - delivery times are out to 5-6 months or more and would be in the mid year model updates 2021.5. These likely would include making the Travato's on the new 2021 Promaster that does have several safety/driver assist features -- but still will not have adaptive cruise control -- look the changes to the 2021 Promasters to see the details
so I'm in a limbo waiting to order -- likely will be getting a 2021.5 -- likely will be waiting for some months for delivery after ordering -- likely will not get a really great deal in the current RV inventory shortage and climate -- but I have my mind set on getting a Travato GL as it fits my needs better than anything I have found so far..
as with most RV's there are a ton of channels on youtube with folks doing great mods to their Travato's - including those by Technomadia -- replacing the TV with a monitor and getting a cellular router and replacing the head unit are upfront mods for the queue

They did several changes to these Winnebago based Volta systems to improve them over the first generation.. we will see where I buy a GL from -- it is looking like it will be a 2022 model year as I will wait until WGO is using the 2021 Promaster chassis.. the person have have been talking with a Lichtsinn as been very responsive -- but they are 1200 miles from me here in Spokane.. the local dealer is very large -- gets decent reviews -- but so far is saying they can't even discuss an order as they are waiting updated price and options sheets from WGO.. I see the benefit of a local purchase....but it does not appear the WGO folks are really there yet at many dealers on fixing the Volta systems. anyway - I have been seeing folks have KLs about 4 to 1 to GLs and hope your problem gets solved soon

Agree on your nit picks about the Travato. We just got our 2021 GL NPE in mid-August and thankfully some of the issues you mentioned have been “fixed” so to speak. However a few like the TV mount remain, which brings me to my question . Can you share a link to the articulating mount you guys bought please? Also did you just use wood screws to mount or where there any anchors involved? Thanks and good luck in your GL search. May want to also check on Travato Owners and Wannabees on Facebook if your not already on as people advertise their vans for sale.

I was touring a G last year, stepped into the bathroom, closed the door, and almost couldn't get out because those slats were very argumentative. I was going to get a K and just use a curtain. It will only be me in the van, so I don't really need much more privacy.

We have almost gotten trapped in the bathroom as well, and when it happens you have to very delicately extract yourself or risk causing even more damage to the flimsy door.

I have to wonder if the sliding door problems are actually a faulty installation or defective/damaged at an RV Show issue. I went to a LaMesa RV Show where most of the "new" RVs were really beat up inside. I would be embarrassed to still be trying to sell them as a new RV. Most "G" owners have not reported any issues as long as the track is frequently lubed.

I had just watched an owner have to replace the cylinder head on his travado/promaster/Ducato with 48k on it, so towards the end, I found it very hard to watch your video thinking not very good thoughts of winnebago/Fiat quality. Funny...it handles well, drives well and gets great gas mileage for a gas RV. I have driven my Travato across country both Southern and Northern route...and it ran fine...of course if you like driving at 95MPH with that weight I suppose it might be underpowered...but we drove across Texas averaging around 75mph and still got over 18MPG...try that in another RV that can sleep four with a gas engine. Had a Ford E450 abd was lucky to get over 8MPG averaging 57 MPH in my old class C....

The mistake is that you bought a Travato at all. For the price of a Travato or used Travato you could have got something custom and premium with lithium batteries and all electrical appliances. Professional van builds are not that expensive in the grand scheme of things. Especially when you consider RV pricing.

We enjoy your technology on the road videos, but not sure what audience this video was designed for-maybe people in the market for a 2016 model? This review of a 2016 rig when 2021s are out, and most of your issues updated over the past 5 model years, could leave some potential buyers thinking that Winnebago hasn’t updated or listened to owners. You might want to connect with the WGO Voices Project where owners have been providing constructive feedback that have resulted in 2021 models with updated refrigerators, new quiet generators, quiet AC with adjustable vents, and Sumos standards. 2021s also have a new Pioneer head Unit. Glad you pointed out that WGO has no control over what Ram offers for safety features. Hopefully potential buyers will do their homework about what is available on new Travatos to see how far these vans have come in 5 years. We are happily fulltiming in our 2016 K and are also looking forward to purchasing our second Travato.
