    About The BSA:
Discovery is at the heart of Scouting. Whether it’s a campout, derby car race, or hike on the trail, we believe every adventure helps us uncover a little more about ourselves. We build the foundations for humility and compassion-strengthening character through actions-to prepare youth for a lifetime of leadership.

Mike Rowe is saying the Boy Scout awards program is a teaching tool. The truth is this program builds good boys into good men.

I'm a little late to the party, but I just came across this video. Like Mike I was a Boy Scout in my youth. I went into Scouting because my older brother was in Scouting. I never got past 2nd Class. (I kept losing my card and had to keep starting over). My time in Scouting would be nothing more than a footnote except for the fact then when my son was in 3rd grade he came home and wanted to join the Cub Scouts. The next year I became a Webelos Den Leader and this began my 25 year involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. Over the years I have earned many awards. I was proud of all that I had accomplished, but of all the things I did, I was most proud the day I saved a guys life. At the time, I was the Non Ferrous Metals Manager for a local scrap dealer. One day one of my guys came into my office in a panic. A customer was down on the ground and wasn't moving. I ran to his aid and found him not breathing and I couldn't get a pulse. I got on the radio to get an ambulance and then started CPR right away. By the time help arrived I had managed to get his heart beating and he was breathing. He still hadn't come to when the ambulance left. His buddy came back the next day to thank me for saving his friends life. I had not fully understood the magnitude of what I had done the day before until he said that. I was just doing what I was trained to do in Scouting. So Mike, I don't have a distinguished Eagle Scout award, but I do know that it was Scouting that helped me help that guy that day and that feeling is better than any of my awards could ever be. Thank you for everything you do for the Scouts. PS: My son is also and Eagle Scout. Pretty proud of him as well.

As a Life Scout, I have honestly learned more in the Boy Scouts than I have ever and ever will learn in an American public school. I am so glad that I am part of the Scouts, and I cherish every moment of it.

So I'm not at all trying to minimize what people learn in the scouts, but for whatever faults public education has, people make the most ridiculous statements about it. I know there is a differential in what types of things you learn, boy scouts teaches things that affect more your day to day life, whereas regular schools focus on building fundamentals for other stuff. You don't learn science, history, geography, math and spelling because it's needed for most of day to day life, you learn it so you have the opportunity to pursue other things that require those skills later, and to develop your brain. The brain is like a muscle, it forms and structures itself based on demand. If your school is bad, maybe it never challenges your brain, maybe doesn't build all of the right fundamentals, maybe they're neglectful, but it's one school out of 10's of thousands, over 50 states that all have different laws and methods. People paint with too broad of brush strokes.

This is probably one of the best speeches I've heard. It's not often you get a guy that is very good at speaking and Mike Rowe is definitely a great man.

I'd like to thank God for the awesome opportunities I had as a youth to become an Eagle Scout. Now I wish to carry that torch to the generation after me.

Great speech. Great Guy. He would get my vote. I did, however, think it was funny how at :45 seconds he says I don't want to feel like a politician and then walks in front of a giant flag that couldn't look more like a politician if it were scripted.:)

Gotta say, loved the speech, and I love how Mike didn't understand why his brother said "I saved a guy's life, great meatloaf mom." I can tell you as a lifeguard (eagle scout as well by the way) that I have saved kids lives and casually told my parents or friends about it, because the first time is a big deal, subsequent times are just doing your job. I have buddies in the job that can't tell you exactly how many saves they have, we give out red beads to try and keep track, but it just is.
