The film illustrates the evolution of the Boy Scouts from a military movement to a force of unity and good will. (Note: the USA version of The Boy Scouts Association is the Boy Scouts of America or BSA.)
    Film opens with hundreds of boys running through a field and introduces the founder, Baden Powell (1:54). Narration accompanies illustrations and photographs by and of Powell. Describes his childhood in England and his love of hunting and nature, accompanied by Powell’s sketches. Sketches show soldiers he trained with scout skills in order to be more independent, and their badges. He then wrote a book called “Aids to Scouting for N. -C.Os. and Men” (8:15). Sketches show Mafeking in South Africa (8:50). More sketches show technology and tactics developed by Powell to bluff the regiment’s power and size (9:19) Sketches show the cadette core of boys who were trained to fill in for soldiers sent to the front line (11:31). Sketch of Sir William Smith, founder of the boy’s brigade (13:02). Pictures of boys from all over England participating in the first Boy Scout Camp in Brownsea Island in 1907 (13:33). I was a mediocre Boy Scout but after my time as an officer in the Army, I became active as a Scout Master. Later, going to Wood Badge training and still later a Wood Badge instructor. I spent 12 years total as a Scout Master. Great times. Very rewarding. Some of my scouts went on to the military academies and served in the various military branches. It was very rewarding.

    Actually the most important life lessons I ever learned, came from the Boy Scouts , I'm now 68 years old, still reverent thrifty and always prepared. One of the many things I learned during those times was something my dad told me (( " 98% of your success in life will be from your memory- so don't forget what you're told or what you learn " )).. as a young boy that stuck Pretty solidly, but sometimes was a curse, I never forgot anything ever again from that point.😎

I'm so sad to see what has become of the BSA. It is a dying association and will continue to decline until it goes back to what it was originally meant to be.

      Changing back to what wasn't working is unlikely. Any organization that remains stagnant to change disappears.
      There's just a lot of competing activities today that didn't exist in our youth. All year sports, rampant electronic addiction, the loss of the nuclear family, a shift in demographics, a different culture, etc.
      The list is long but it'll continue onward. I for one, still consider the program the best opportunity for developing kids into good citizens

      If you are referring to allowing young ladies in Scouts BSA, then I'm glad that has changed. Remember Girl Guides were allowed to do everything the young men were allowed to do everywhere but the USA. I don't see it as a feminist ideal but rather letting the young ladies learn the same things the young men do. If they choose not to, that is their choice. I'm the ASM for an all girl troop and very proud of them. Most are more disciplined than the young men. Let's return to Gilwell!

    At the time of this film I wonder if they had integrated troops yet? I knew a man from my church who wanted to be in the scouts, and this was in the 1920's, who was not allowed into the local troop because he was black. So he became a Lone Scout, progressed through all the levels, became an Eagle, then started troups for black boys. He was on scouting boards and such until he died in his early nineties, arguably the longest scouting career in the country.

    • @VernCrisler
      @VernCrisler ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think they had integrated troops back then. Things started changing in the 1960s, but I remember in the late 1960s there was only one black kid in our troop, and he didn't stay in it for very long. Must have been hard for black kids to fit in, so the Lone Scout provided a valuable service.

      Parents are not that vigalent even today. Parents rarely learn about child protection and the rules Scout leaders are expected to follow. Each leader knows and monitors each other, but would also like meaningful oversight from parents. Unfortunately just being a parent doesn't mean children, especially that parents own children, are necessarily safe. Preditors do not look the same but with really careful observation there are similar behaviors.
