I married a hard working man & became a homemaker. I didn’t neglect my mind, following my mother’s example. (One of my professors begged me to continue my formal education; he told me he’d never had a student of my caliber. This isn’t about bragging; I’d have loved to do that! However, being responsible required different decisions to be made & I do not regret them.) I studied many things: history, language, people, hand weaving, hand spinning, I studied languages, including: Latin, Spanish, Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Koine’ Greek, Anglo-Saxon/Old English, German, & dabble in others. I’m not proficient. I’m a hobbyist. Some, I’ve not addressed in years, but it’s still there. I’ve currently fallen down the historical dress rabbit hole, which, of course, leads to the history of various countries, class consciousness, and hand sewing. I also embroider, knit, and make lace. I bought a lovely Gothic floor harp (not a concert harp) & promptly developed a life threatening illness, so that is on hold. I also study theology &, at one time was a candidate for ministry; I made a different decision, one which wouldn’t beggar our family with debt. Debt appears not to trouble most college students, today. Do they think a fairy godmother will come along & eliminate the requirement that loans must be paid back? How many actually get a job in their field? How many can them afford to pay their debts? I look around at young people, today, and wonder how many people in basic degree fields can even find a job? And, if they do, are they able to live on it? Many people work with their hands, love the result, & make a good living. Those people may have an excellent sense of how to price their work. Others should take classes. Classes in wood shop, mechanics, asst Arts & Crafts, sewing, as well as how to budget and manage businesses should be offered at all schools, again. Then, if one wants college, she or he should know why & what they want to do with that education. They’ll be able to cover tuition and/or housing, making their lives much simpler.

The idea of workplace safety rules is great. Certain practices, lock out tag ought for instance. Crane lifting procedures, sling types, rigging angles (the strength of the lifting device basically decreases by 1 x sin of the angle from the verticle) are only common sense. The biggest safety problem is people how do unsafe things. Use grinders without eye protection etc.

Mike Rowe...I salute you! Well done, there is no common sense anymore. Like the old head lines read...Man killed at intersection, but he had the right of way!
D.R.H 860 “Man killed at intersection, but he had the right of way!” The right of way, in many cases, ultimately belongs to he who has the least to lose. You can be right, but you can also be “dead right.” R.I.P. common sense.😢
@roal ik -- And of course, not getting out of bed involves the risk of avoiding risk. No food for those who don't get out of bed. Maybe they have enablers, but that never lasts. So great risk in not getting out of bed.
I like Mike Rowe. That said, why is he the input god when it comes to work? Would he himself accept the laughable wage a hard job pulls in and have pride in doing so? Or does he just like the image a TV show gave him where he got to sample people's laborious occupations while raking in more cash than the average man will ever see his entire life? I get his p.o.v. and I agree with his opinions on all these issues, I just don't like seeing him portrayed as the only guy who ever knows what hard work is. Many people work harder than he does to make a living on a mere fraction of the pay. Mike's a great guy, I'd just rather hear this come from an average Joe for once who knows and lives it every day.

I always give them business which is fair. Wendy's bathrooms are not locked so i can come in without buying anything, besides their lines are huge every location near me. Places who refuse to let non customers use it are lacking human decency. Government/ city planners / park or sanitation dept need to build some public bathrooms

If you personally didn't support yourself,...no husband,...no family help,...no government assistance (some home loans are government assistance),....never 'borrowed money',..then YOU didn't do it either. Hint: no one does. There are only those honest enough to admit it (which includes SOME billionaires, even) then there are those people like,...well, you. Just not very honest. If Musk tells me even he couldn't have done it alone (personally responsibility) then I know you're full of shit.
Point being, if YOU didn't do it ALL by yourself, then YOU weren't personally responsible, either. No one CAN BE, this is just a game of semantics designed to make some people 'okay' with looking down at others.

I taught workplace safety for fifteen years, I know exactly what he’s talking about. I would always tell my students that their safety was their responsibility, not someone else’s.
Mike Rowe is funny, clever, self deprecating in a witty way and very likeable. However, I've yet to see any evidence that he has more than average intelligence, this interview included!
Let me guess. You also have hardly any lawyers, human resource departments, or worker's comp claims. The USA has 5% of the world's population but 50% of the world's lawyers. What a sad state we're in.
When I worked as a school bus driver, I often heard parents comment, "Oh, I couldn't do your job. Don't you feel more worried when you have a bus full of children with you?" My reply was always, "Not at all. I want to get to the destination safely myself, so if they want to ride along, it's fine with me."
Safety doesn't matter if the people don't have situational awareness that can't be taught or common sense. I've worked construction for well over 25 years never have I filed workman's comp claim. Other than scrapes and bruises I haven't sustained ain't other injuries. However I always try to be extremely aware of my surroundings and their hazards.
7 wings as Eagles. Well done sir I have a similar history but in Civil construction over 40 years and you are so right about situational awareness and the ability to see various outcomes of action. Hats off to yourself and I.
Reg McCormack a couple years ago I did work in a company that made large industrial snow plows one time I was talking to one of the people that handles their safety. He told me that over the years they have steadily seen the injuries go up in the facility. This place uses presses to punch holes in 1/2 in steel plates. And for some reason people couldn't figure out you can't put your hand in the press and push the button. He told me the only explanation that they could come up with for the high injury rate was that were a Society that is moving away from machinery and people have no experience with it. In other words if someone grows up on a Farm in a house where the father works with tools especially power tools the father can have effective influence on how to handle them safely. As opposed to a father who doesn't work with power tools. He was a doctor or an attorney or maybe a manager for a company. As a result this person has no experience with any type of Power Equipment.
You can't teach situational awareness to people with sub-standard IQs... let's be honest here. Most "accidents" seem to always involve an idiot, doing idiot things, and not paying attention to his surroundings. (The Army won't take you if your IQ is lower than 84. And where to those guys end up? Construction.)
I'm a 34 year old who is still living at home with his parents... however, I don't just sit around and do nothing all day. I help out around the house. My parents are getting up there in years, getting stiffer and taking more naps throughout the day, so I've taken over some of the major household chores. I do the grocery shopping and the cooking. And for those who say that I should get a job and move out, I would *love* to. I get tired of the repeated "Where are you going?" everytime I leave the house. I job search, I apply for jobs. However, in my area it is difficult. There are *many* jobs that I otherwise would be qualified for that I cannot apply to because of a single line... "Must be billingual." I have a bachelor's degree, in an actual field, instead of those 'snowflake centric' fields like gender studies. I am just not having any luck in the job search.
Skythos I told my daughter to just take any job last year after college. It’s not as much pay as she thought but enuff to move out next weekend so I can take a nap 😴 once in awhile lol. As for your parents getting stiffer and slower: Plant based low oil diet should do the trick. You need your own life and they prolly would love a grand child 🧒 or two 👶.
Cheffee Love They're taking stuff for the stiffness and such, but there's only so much that can do to combat getting older. My parents started our family later in life. My dad is nearing 70. As I said, I would *love* to find a job and move out, it's just the finding part which is proving difficult. I did have an interview just the other day for a job that will allow me to leave the nest after I finish paying off my student loans, and from what I can tell it went great, so I'm pretty hopeful. I wouldn't be able to move out immediately though, as I have student loans and a car note, but once those are taken care of (ie putting the equivalent of rent and utilities towards them), I would start looking to move out. It wouldn't be practical to do otherwise, and paying off the loans quickly will do wonders for my credit rating and such. As it stands right now, the grandchildren are more likely to come from my younger sister and her husband, and I fully expect that to happen in the near future, as the 'wander lust' that seems to have plagued them seems to have run its course and they're talking about actually buying a house as opposed to the moving from apartment complex to apartment complex when the 'move in deal' expires.
Dove Smiling I should clarify that while I am not bilingual in the needed sense, I am bilingual in the food service sense. I can't converse about most subjects, but you need me to place an order in Spanish? That I can do easily lol I am fluent in food service Spanish. But yes, I am working on that aspect.
Filiberto Barrera looks like we have the same safe space! Been painting cars for 30 years. Never filed a workman's comp claim, but I've wrapped myself in duct tape and paper towels many times. Even picked chrome plating out of my hand and superglued it shut before finishing my day once... Half inch deep cut, but a long way from my heart. Just saying.
John Smith How is owning a shop gay? You assume the owner sits in an office with his feet up on the desk. Don't... The greatest poster I evervsaw was in a cafe in sun valley. It had a skier doing a back scratcher off a cliff, with the caption "Yeah, but does he dare own his own company? " lol. Shop owners are usually first in, last out, with the most work and the least time while ultimately taking the most risk physically, mentally, financially, and socially. I had a custom motorcycle shop for over a decade. I was the one doing the heavy lifting and getting the most dirt under my nails. So show some respect.
You got to like that Mike Rowe. I have and do believe the same exact things he said and he was very articulate in stating them for everybody's enjoyment
Yup. Essentially, the people causing chaos are mostly unemployable. That's why they lash out. Multiply the guy living in his basement by thousands, and that's who is on the street
Every time I climb a 20 foot tall ladder to clean out my gutters, fire up my chainsaw, jack up my car to change a tire, use a power to of some kind to repair something I'm elevating a risk to my safety. What safe space advocates apparently don't understand is the concept of risk/reward.
People tell more to hire somebody, or they seek to ban the power tools I use (leaf blowers) to do my own work. Because these people can't do their own work and/or cannot imagine getting their own hands dirty
they are doing this because of what happened with those 2 black guys all over the media.. it's a knee-jerk reaction that is going wayyyy too far, and is going to hurt their bottom line tremendously.
You've been in a cave right ? I mean that is the only reason for such a Naive reply hahahaha No Business is successful letting "everyone," in like this. They will have to tweek this rule hahaha

This type of boomer that thinks it's still 1975, and the kind of opportunities available to his generation are still available today, are insufferable. You can't go work in a factory, make 50k a year, buy a house, and support a family out of high school anymore. In my experience, most millennials don't mind working, but what are they working for? What are they serving? Are they going to build families? How? And of course boomers take no responsibility for wrecking the married family, making bastards of their children, and normalizing all sorts of asocial degeneracy. It came out of nowhere!!!!!
Last year my boss hired a young man to "help" me who shows no initiative and absolutely no work ethic. What's funny is that when I retire next year he thinks he will get my job, even though he has shown no interest in learning it (he only speaks to me if he absolutely has to). If he does get my job, nothing will get done. Oh yes, I forgot to tell you - if anyone confronts him with what he didn't do, he has an emotional breakdown (so far there have been four that I know about). Of course my boss plans to keep him.
Mike is wrongo Safety policies are the company’s way of releasing liability. Can’t say safety third and they already talk about personal responsibility. What makes people lazy in America is fast food, tv, Fox News, driving everywhere and lack of critical thinking.

It is the parents fault for let him stay there four 12 years after High school! I made my children pay rent as soon as they left school, High school or college. One stayed for 24 months, the other left, because $25.00 a week was to much to pay.
I went to a trade school and it was great. I also went on to college and earned 3 degrees including a PhD. Looking back, it was more realistic with a trade school. People will always need their HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical wiring repaired.
yup, this is what i wish more muricans paid attention to. even doctors that grind years of their lives away for paying the medical industry with their labor and surgical ability and student loans have to get their plumbing, electrical and hvac repaired by someone that works harder than they do and arguably assists the country more for less reward. however that hvac repairman cant cut open his own chest and repair his own ventricles. at least not yet. maybe in the future they will have "bag your own grocery" checkouts for heart repair.

Exactly, if everyone has “safety first” plastered everywhere, you feel like everyone is there to be safe, and therefore become complacent.

When I worked as a school bus driver, I often heard parents comment, "Oh, I couldn't do your job. Don't you feel more worried when you have a bus full of children with you?" My reply was always, "Not at all. I want to get to the destination safely myself, so if they want to ride along, it's fine with me."
Exactly...when I am on a plane and sitting next to someone who is scared, I always remind them that the pilot loves their family more than mine...
Construction.)
it's hard to pay attention if your checking your phone every 5 minutes

Mike Rowe is easily one of the most brilliant minds of this time.
Those parents, with a 30 years old baby, should sell their house, rent a 1 bedroom appart, travel and have a great life! Bye bye problems!
"Must be billingual."
I have a bachelor's degree, in an actual field, instead of those 'snowflake centric' fields like gender studies.
Cheffee Love
They're taking stuff for the stiffness and such, but there's only so much that can do to combat getting older.
Dove Smiling

"what's more important than safety?" the answer is competence!
My safe space is in my shop, overhauling engines and painting rust buckets.
Same here, except I'm always waiting on more parts. :/ lolz
That sounds kinda gay. Having a shop is something my little sister would do.
Well I'm just kidding with you guys. Best part of a shop is giving each other shit and having a dirty mouth and no women around.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Your boss also needs a backbone.
Too many employers are afraid to fire people who aren’t doing their job
Young man or a boy?
DachsieMomma I know what you mean I work with morons like that
Ben Brown me too it's a disgrace to work like that , and supposedly they are better than the hard workers people.
I have always been a fan of Mike Row, but i hadn't realized the genius of the man! Thanks for the interview Tucker!
You just jizzed on the floor
Mike is wrongo
Safety policies are the company’s way of releasing liability. Can’t say safety third and they already talk about personal responsibility.
What makes people lazy in America is fast food, tv, Fox News, driving everywhere and lack of critical thinking.
Go look up his ted talk, it’s pure gold!
He’s been a liberal hero. They won’t like hearing this.
Michael Gross I agree, mike is a very intelligent, level headed, down to earth man.
Wisdom articulating. Unfortunately, an endangered species.
Mike is so brilliant!!!!!!!!!
Lol. He says the most basic things. My child says things so basic. No wonder the man in unemployed and always had a job watching others work.
Hear, hear!
ScootMagoot46 I guess you can expect your son to be living with you when he’s 30 and crying about LEGO’s...
I'm not a gay man but Mike Rowe is one sexy MFkr.
ScootMagoot46 If you think he says the most basic things then that means you got nothing out of it and you can’t understand his logic. So much for you scumbags being “open minded” when you can’t even tell (or ignore) what he’s trying to say. And him being “unemployed”? haha, you really are clueless. Mike is worth over $45 million which is more than you will ever make in your life. He makes you look like a homeless peasant.
Never spent a dollar at starbuck, never going to!
My daughter is getting married next month. We've decided to hold the reception at Starbucks. We're not going to purchase any Starbucks products. I hope they have ample seating for 248 people. If not, we cry racism.
MISSING THE POINT. Entirely
That's just stupid.
J J , I totally agree with you, they really are a bunch of short sighted and small minded idiots and are destroying the American values upon which our country was built and founded upon... their narrow mindedness and fear based thinking is destroying our true American values ☹️
The one in Newark NJ has a massive out door seating area.
yaqstar Hey look, you're outnumbered.
He is intelligent and humorous. And natural. And experienced...with a great voice. And articulate...
First time I've ever seen somebody talk more than Tucker...lol. Great Job Mike 👍.
Glad we both got our new gigs going!.
2 entitled dumb fucks who watch other people work for a living.
That's because Mike Rowe is one of the few sensible thinkers Tucker has on his show. Usually it is some dweeb with garbage spewing instead of thoughts.
ScootMagoot46 Mike Rowe is not Entitled he’s a hard working humble man.
Warped Perception - intelligent people make others who think and listen automatically pay attention to what he is talking about
@@blackout07blue Really? You and who else?
Mike Rowe most profound statements amaze me. I had now idea he has that kind of intellect
Ummm, like your comment.....but, ummm.....maybe spellcheck?
It is the parents fault for let him stay there four 12 years after High school! I made my children pay rent as soon as they left school, High school or college.
One stayed for 24 months, the other left, because $25.00 a week was to much to pay.
What a thoughtful, intelligent man who is unassuming & humble; also very funny!
Mike Rowe is the only one that can put that wide eyed googily eyed look on Tuckers face.
No he always has that slack jawed look because he has a face full of Botox and fillers.
I LOVE MIKE ROWE!!! He's a very realistically wise man!!!!
Mary Ann Williams -. All that and sexy too.
Mike Roe is so eloquent, it is
mind-boggling !
He is also an excellent example of a wonderful human being !
Luv you, Mike Roe ! !
And thank you for all you do !
Mike Rowe is always great.. His "Returning the favor" show on facebook is just down right Awesome!! So is "Somebody's gotta do it" show on TBN. This generation should be referred to as... "Momma's Basement Generation"
Wait...Wait...you want people TO WORK in order to get stuff?? Awe, come on! LoL 😂😂
What’s the catch??🤔
So when the store closes at 11pm, do I have to leave?
I want to sleep there!
I see you everywhere
I'm sure if enough people started to push that - it would become available at all Starbucks....free room and bored. I say we keep pushing Starbucks until they go bankrupts trying to please everyone.
The Starbucks ceo house has an open door policy, just like open border. You don’t have to ask for permission to enter or to stay there
Good point second
Poisonedblade the bathrooms will be open 24/7. It is discrimination to interrupt a homeless hippy shooting heroine. Safety first!
Very well stated!
