The cubs I've been leading for four years bridge over next week, but I have zero BSA scouting background. This video was so very helpful and incredibly timely. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the comment and for taking the time to watch. I know you & your Scouts will have a blast & learn together. Take advantage of all the adult training they offer, especially the IOLS. Introduction of Outdoor Leader Skills-it’s an eye opener! & HAVE FUN!
thank you so much, I started in 6th grade and I am now in 8th. I started off slow with only getting to scout by may of 6th grade, but that is when I watched one of your videos. In 7th grade I got my tender foot and 2nd class, and this year I got my 1st class and life. Thank you so much. You are the reason I am were I am.
That’s awesome! Keep setting goals and achieving them! You’ll get to Eagle before ya’ know it! Enjoy all the Scouting events your Troop offers & build some fun memories! Best of luck!
As one who has done it, I would get it by your junior year of high school. If it's not done by then you will like get distracted by other life events high school dances, football ect. But enjoy the time with friends it's a commitment.
I earned Eagle in December 2011. I enjoyed Boy Scouts so much! I was in a great troop, and we always did lots of fun stuff. Of course it took a lot of work to make it to Eagle. All I can say to those who are close to making Eagle, don’t give up. Stay confident, and always put your best foot forward. You can do it!
Thank you for your advice. I had one Scout who shared his thoughts once he earned Eagle. The people he talked to along his journey and became Eagle were glad they stuck it out… & the ones who didn’t “always” wished they had continued until they got it be regret they didn’t. So he knew he didn’t want to regret NOT getting his Eagle rank.
It will be 51 years this May 21st that I made Eagle. I went from Bobcat to Eagle. I have both badges in a frame in my office (art studio). Also I have the newspaper clipping of that award night on the wall next to my badges. My friend,(also awarded Eagle Scout that night) Scoutmaster, and I are in the picture. In closing I'm a Life Member of N.E.S.A. The trail to Eagle was fun, and with a lot of memories. also, that badge got me my job with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft ( I'm now retired from).
Thanks so much for sharing. I love hearing stories how Scouting helped moved them towards their career path. My son made lifelong friends too. It’s also cool to see the strong brotherhood continue. He has a few Eagle Scouts at his work. That bond is very strong! Thanks again for watching & commenting-Congratulations on your Eagle!
My son earned his Eagle at 15. This meant he was old enough to be followed by youth and adults, but it was not too late (17 or so) when he had to choose between school and scouts. We also said the scouts should get their wings before their wheels. Once they get their wheels, the wings will fly away. My son got his driver's license on his 18th birthday. Finally, just keep a list of the steps on the kitchen frig and ask "How bad do you want it?" Our troop has about 45 Eagles over the last 25 years.
I earned my Eagle Scout award in 1965 along with a Bronze, Gold and Silver Palms. In addition I was acknowledged as a "Distinguished Eagle Scout", a recognition afforded to very few Eagle Scouts.
Fantastic! Congratulations on such a wonderful recognition! Did you eventually get back into Scouting? It’s always great to hear from Eagle Scouts who have years under their belt! Once an Eagle Always an Eagle!
@@scoutingamerica1910 I was also a merit badge counselor as well as a vice-president of my council. After their decision regarding gays in scouting both as scouts and leaders, I have disassociated myself from scouting all together. They were the greatest years of my life but I could no longer loo a boy in the eye and tell him to be morally straight.
Eagle Scout here: Take your time I was involved in several sports and extracurriculars but I loved scouting. I completed the rank when I was 16/17. But I know guys who completed it at 14
Thanks for your comment. Congratulations on your Eagle Rank. I totally agree, Scouts need to make sure they are having fun… FIRST! Everything else will fall into place.
Congratulations on your Eagle! I totally agree… slow down and enjoy the ride! There’s so many opportunities that are offered in Scouting. Thanks for watching!
You’re good! The only time to think you can’t make Eagle is if you make Life Rank with 5 months to go before your 18th BD! THEN you’ve run out of time because you have to serve at least 6 months in a Leadership position. Plus, all Eagle required MB & 7 elective MB + Eagle project, + Eagle Scout workbook. Keep going!!!! Make sure you’re having fun! Ask for help. Make sure your Scoutmaster knows you’re still interested and ready to push forward. Even older Scouts will lend a hand to help you out. Just ask.
@ appreciate the advice, I have started working with the local councilor for the Eagle badges so I should be prepared for the leader ranks, I found the best way to advance is helping younger scouts with their requirements as it also leads to you working on your own.
@ very good advice! I’ll pass that onto our Scouts! You don’t realize how much you know until you share your knowledge with someone else, realizing how much you have to explain or demonstrate just to teach the other person! The E.D.G.E. method works!
Thanks for your comment & taking the time to watch. This is why it’s important to take Merit Badges at summer/winter camp that are Eagle required… BUT to prevent partials the Scout should take the initiative to find out which requirements WON’T be covered during camp. Yes… there are 3 Eagle required merit badges take a minimum of 90 days. Also, finding Merit Badge Universities will help… but a lot of Scouts do take the full 7-8 years to complete. There is nothing wrong with that. The goal for the Scouts are to earn Eagle, but as far as the adults we should do our best to help them become good citizens & hopefully learn some life skills along the way. Thanks again for your comment.
Then the scout at 14 like so many others will leave and never be part of scouts again because they are done. It is one thing if they stay active going to 90% of meetings and doing most the campouts and continuing to learn being an example. Unfortunately most of the young eagles do stop and don't retain anything they learned. I will take a scout who remembers what he learned in scouts over an eagle that does not and just sprinted through the ranks. A great line from the movie Incredibles by Syndrome "If everyone is special then no one is"
Thanks for your comment. Yes… there is definitely something to say about a Scout who earns Eagle too early or young, I too agree. They can not absorb the meaning of some of these merit badges. A good example is First Aid. This one is so important, but a lot of counselors set it up more as a class instruction instead of hands-on life demonstrations. Younger kids just sit & don’t get half the information presented to them. The real point I was getting across was it’s the adults job to make sure we help them become good citizens… the Eagle award is on the Scout. Even if they Eagle at 17… I rarely see them returning to the Troop. Thanks again for watching!
@@scoutingamerica1910 I do agree Eagle is the end of scouting for most. I think it typically is more a parent drive than kids drive when they are young. I have heard parents say come hell or high water my kid is going to get eagle even if I have to do it for them. Unfortunately the kid knows it and is letting the parent do the work. Those are the ones I really don't like because they do not retain because they never really learned. My view of an Eagle in scouts or one that is close to eagle is I should be able to drop them into any scouting situation and they will not only succeed at the task but go above and beyond without the need of SM or ASM help. They are essentially a JASM at that point. We are trying it with our life scouts and Eagle scouts this next patrol shake up because of the new scouts that are crossing over.
Yes! Yes! I’ve had the pleasure of sitting in on a few Eagle BOR, & totally impressed with the maturity they have achieved-putting others first & can’t pass up a piece of trash on the ground without picking it up! LOL! The program is awesome, but ALL the adults need to go through training… that’s where I feel the program has its weakest link. Don’t get me wrong, there are some incredible adult leaders, but the BSA needs more! Thanks again for all your help in the BSA!
@@scoutingamerica1910 Your videos do have great points and am trying to educate myself. I am actually doing wood badge this year to better my training.
I agree with you. I earned life scout when i was 14. My parents and leaders pushed me to wait until I was older for eagle. I had it all done for years except for my project. I finished that up and got my eagle award when I was 17. At the time I struggled with being a scout because it wasn't seen as "cool" and we got made fun of a lot. Now I'm 30 and found those same kids now admire me for seeing it through and it impresses the ladies! Myself and my two older brothers are all eagles, my dad is proud as could be to be the father of three, which is definitely not common. I loved scouting

That’s exciting! If you & your son ever get invited to an “EAGLE COURT OF HONOR” make sure he goes. It’s a very inspiring ceremony!
This isn’t taking into account the merit badges you need and the time some of them take...

Yes! Prioritize, you’ve come this far, don’t give up! I’ve known a lot of “Lifers” that regret NOT finishing. You can do it!
You must started as a tigar scout you have to be in 2nd to join the cub scouts and finish 5th to be in boy scouts
