  • With the festive season over its time to get back out and uncover more of #Scotland. This week I'm in #Bathgate in #West Lothian and this place is full of surprises.
I wake up before sunrise and im treated with a spectacular start to the day as the sun comes gracefully up on the horizon of Bathgate.

The big church was a nightclub for a while... that was 10 years ago at least, it's probably not anymore.

Sir James Young Simpson ("the midwifery professor") was the guy who discovered Chloroform in its medical usage as an anaesthetic. Prior to him, surgical operations were performed without anaesthetic, so effectively he is the founder of medical anesthesia.

Academy Place was the West Lothian College for many years , it is a listed building , so converted into fancy flats

Bathgate is also famous for a tenuous connection with the band called Goodbye Mr McKenzie. An original member was from Bathgate but he left very soon afterwards and well before the band had any kind of success. He ended up managing a Pizza Hut in Edinburgh. Shirley Manson then left GMM and went on to become a superstar as lead singer with Garbage!. Such a fine line between success and failure, especially in the music industry!

It's really nice to see someone appreciating the Central Belt, there's so much lovely countryside to enjoy and fascinating places to visit. I don't know Bathgate but Im intrigued by that fossil, and Cairnpapple Hill is nearby - that's a place Id love to go to. I wonder if that is a stage in the park?

Do people hunt deer for food in Scotland like they do here in the US? They are a beautiful creature.

Yeah, there are no natural predators left so they end up over grazing so we need population control.
