For everyone commenting about the RX-8: I understand that the triangles were in the design because it's a rotary engine. Also, the Prius and Mustang were jokes :)

i dont agree with your reasons for not advising the Prius. the problem is if some one is going for a first car they are looking for a cheep car most of the time. a lot of Prius were not maintained well and will likely need the engine replaced if it is going for cheep, it can be replaced pretty easily but it will be several thousand dollars. and i dont think it gets any less respect than a corolla.

    • @AutoAutopsy

Yeah I should have said in the video the Prius was a joke. Apologies for not being clear, but you do bring up a good point!

The problem with all rotary engines, especially Mazda RXs, is that even when they're driven gently and never raced, they DRINK oil and eat clutches.

If you want a car that will last 200k+ miles stick with Toyota or Honda

    • @davetheitguy4516
      @davetheitguy4516 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Honda and Toyota do make good cars. They've got their share of problems though. No car is perfect. I think a lot of it is how you maintain your vehicle. I've got a '94 Honda Accord LX with about 315,000 miles on it. It still runs good, but it leaks oil and burns a little oil too. I've got a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE1 with about 230,000 miles on it. It doesn't leak or burn any oil yet, but the interior on the Pontiac has had a lot more issues than the Honda. Both have been well maintained and have been very reliable vehicles for me and my wife. They've also both had their share of both major and minor repairs. The Honda needed a new radiator, alternator, several timing belts, wheel bearings, A/C blower motor, radiator fan motor, oil pan gasket, ignition switch, driver-side power window switch, A/C compressor, distributor ignitor, and brake master cylinder. The Pontiac needed an intake manifold gasket, an alternator, front wheel bearings, anti-lock brake wiring harness, a vacuum hose, front radiator hoses, driver-side power window switch, heater core hose fitting, starter motor, dash vinyl repair, body control unit, ignition switch, EGR valve, and replacement side mirrors. This was over the 13 year time period we've owned these vehicles.

Amen. My wife just had to have one. So I plunked down $1000, waited six months. What I got for my money and patience was the sorriest excuse for a car ever made. It was the Yugo's big brother. Problems with the computers, the dash cracking, the turn radius of a aircraft carrier, the ride similar to what one would experience driving a bicycle on railroad ties. We finally sold the piece of crap after 4 years for 20% of what we paid for it, and felt like we made the deal of the century. The guy didn't realize I would have paid him to take the damn thing!! Oh yeah, it was the most expensive, top of the line model the made. Leather, Turbo, Chrome rims, heated seats, premium sound system, etc. Basically, whip cream on dog crap.

KJBPSkipper bulletproof means the engine not having any mechanical issues....

  • @Mrdubomb
    @Mrdubomb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +145

As a mechanic i would like to add,
dont buy anything with a rotory engine, cylinder deactivation technology, cvt tranny, used hybrid unless batteries have been replaced with oem, or GDI
If you do buy GDI you need to use ethenol free gasoline.
If you buy something with cylinder deactivation, make sure it can be disabled or you will have oil burning eventually
If you buy a cvt tranny, the oil has to be changed every 40K at maximum
the lincoln LS/Jag s type suffered from valve cover gasket issues, flooding the coils with oil, and Ive seen the tranny need rebuilding at 100K in the s type
Best not to buy anything with a ford tranny to begin with.
Suzuki with the ecotec motor (pontiac wave, chevy aveo) had issues with waterpumps taking out the t-belt, which was a weak link to begin with, so you have to change t-belt/wp every 50K miles
Cant comment on older land rovers, but newer range rover use bmw n62 engine and are like any german engineered car-great till warranty runs out and then needs complete overhaul, new gaskets, seals, etc, etc. This is expected and normal in europe.
Pulsating brakes do not make a car unsafe-just annoying as hell.
mini cooper-oil capacity of only 4.5 liters and the oil life index is 15K, and people honestly believe that you can go that long btwn oil changes, idiots.
and this is why people buy new and have car payments instead of paying a monthly repair bill.

Good sir, what do you think about a 2010 Lincoln MKT? I heard horror stories about the suspension and transmition issues that it has. Yet I heard that some Lincoln models are super like the town car that's why they stopped making them (2011 last year) so can we safely assume that mkt's since their last producing year was 2016 that means that they are good mechanically and don't have much issues like the town car?

    • @Mrdubomb
      @Mrdubomb 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Mkt are ok, same as a Ford edge, if you buy an all wheel drive make sure it has an updated transfer case/pto with drain and change the fluid once a year minimum, also hopefully it would have had the driveshaft replaced with a serviceable unit, otherwise put away about 2K for those two repairs.
3.0 v6 engines are good, they're timing chain so you have to change oil regularly.
If you live in rust belt make sure it's been under coated, gas tank is about 2K, stupid expensive for some reason.

Mrdubomb. if you bought a Saturn Vue with the cvt Trans it went out on you in the first 40k. the main counter haft bearing failed and the shaft started wobbling making grinding noises till it finally grinded off the case detents for the c-clip that held the reverse clutch pack in place.. and all the sudden you lost reverse gear... the a few miles down the road the steel belt snapped and you lost forward.. gm ended up replacing the trans but the warranty was only extended to 80k. well your trans failed at 85k same issue and now they want you to spend 5k for a trans and a used junkyard one will run you up to 3k and rebuilding it is not a option because the case is damged so what do you do?? well if it still drives forward you sell it to the next moron for $800. so every car has its own specific issues.. the rule of thumb for this is if it's the first 2 year of some new technology in it it's probably prone to issues and bugs... but usually after 3 years all the issues are addressed. for example only Saturn vue that had this issue was the 2004 and halfway through 2005 with the 2.4 ecotec engine. the they went back to conventional Trans. the ultimate solution was GENERAL MOTORS finally trashed the whole saturn line of garbage vehicles in 2010 and fired everyone involved in it.

They loose soo much money in depreciation and fall apart when they get old which is why they are not worth buying, unless you are a millionaire and don't care about burning money. a lot of people these days lease them, and then get rid of them when the lease is up. While Toyota/Lexus is the complete opposite.

But 20 years from now, when you have insanely high rent to pay, 2 kids to put through college and a partner that will cost vast amounts of money to keep happy (I speak from experience), you'll be desperate for the Prius' 80 million mpg and reliability.

As far as the Prius goes, it's probably the most reliable car in the group and the most boring car one could own. But to it's credit it's cheap to work on, parts are relatively inexpensive and a good car for people who want cheap transportation and are not car enthusiasts and are interested in only going from pt. A to pt. B. Besides all of that, women will like it more than men and they'll probably treat it like their pet.

Well done, as usual.I knew several who bought Mini Coopers new, even then some had horror stories.Friends bought a new Mini ragtop in 2006.The convertible top failed within 6 months, the transmission seized within a year of purchase. They had a flood when the Mini was in their driveway.Turns out the transmission wasn't even sealed,so it was basically waterlogged.Still under warranty, they towed it to the dealership, who was obscenely dismissive and turned them away. After all the repairs they were too cash strapped to pursue litigation.

This all sounds reasonable except the Prius. The most popular car and I shouldn't buy it. It gets great gas mileage and you list no actual operational problems and I shouldn't buy it. Huh??? I'll get zero respect from anyone who has the slightest interest in cars. Who cares? If it get me where I need to go and doesn't empty my wallet at the pump, what's their respect going to buy me? Guess it's not a hybrid anymore if you end up lugging the extra weight of dead batteries around all the time. But at least you can still avoid the congestion charge in London. Which is the real purpose of a prius, let's be honest.

Car payments and leasing is for suckers.
    1) buy crappy used car for $1000 or even less.
    2) Don't spend more than $50 on repairs, but get oil changes.
    3) drive until it breaks down.
    4) repeat and save tens of thousands. We can usually find a Mexican guy who'll pay us $100 for a busted car in a few days on craigslist, plus no towing cost to us. That's already 1/10th the cost of a $1000 replacement vehicle or 1/5th of a $500 vehicle.
    5) Do this for 20 years. assuming you get at least one year out of every car, it's WAY cheaper than paying $20,000 or more for one car that automatically depreciates....not to mention all that interest and all the repairs over those years. You have to renew your registration each year anyway. And any taxes or other fees still add up to tens of thousands less than you'd pay for a new car.
    6) play it carefully and you can also dodge those pesky emissions tests. Just don't go stinking up the earth with a shitty muffler.
My wife and I have been doing this since the mid 90s. Friends and family get killed by car payments and interest. We put that cash into savings and our vacation fund.
Sure we drive 2001 hondas. We've also traveled to 16 different countries since 1997.
You decide what you'd rather have: life experiences and savings, or a shiny overpriced hunk of junk you spend very few hours of your life in. And with that extra cash you can rent cool cars on vacation once in awhile if you want, or a van or camper for a road trip, etc.
    Tips:
choose a smaller car for great gas mileage.
Don't take it on road trips or too far from home so you won't get stranded.
Ride a bike in nice weather to places close to home and save gas money. Mopeds are great too.
This is WAY easier if you're into the type of woman (or, like me, you're already married to a great woman) who likes you for who you are, not the car you drive (also me).
Car payments are for suckers. Get yourself outta this easy credit/high interest nightmare now before the whole thing collapses on top of you.

Chryslers USED to be good cars, I mean the fact the motor area has gotten so cramped that the battery goes under the backseat on a lot of models says enough. Let alone seeing plenty of different models constantly in shops&junkyards. If by maintenance you mean taking it to the dealer, real car guys like working on their cars..and a car that you have to take to the dealer for maintenance to make sure it stays running doesn't sound that beneficial/cost effective to me.

Why?, because all out vehicles are properly "maintained". I don't know, I think the prius is fun to drive. It's like a golfcart that can do 80mph, while being quiet and maneuverable enough to sneak into any parking spot. It has surprisingly quick 0-15mph times, with that combined electric+gasoline torque. It's kinda boring when compared to a powerful car, but you should be comparing it with a gasoline powered EZ-GO with the governor disabled.

The 05-10 six cylinder Mustang catches a lot of crap from enthusiasts, largely b/c the previous generation V6 models were absolute turds, but it's really not a bad car for a younger buyer seeking something inexpensive and reliable yet good looking and sporty.
For 05-10 the 4.0L SOHC Cologne V6 came over from truck duty in Ranger/Explorer and is a robust engine which produces a healthy 240lb/ft of torque @ 3500RPM and is perfectly happy running on cheap 87 octane pump gas. Now 210hp doesn't look like much on paper, but paired with the 5-speed automatic the V6's 0-60 and quarter mile times are within a half a second of the 99-04 automatic GTs. It also puts you in company of popular sport compacts from that generation like the 06-11 Civic Si & 02-06 Sentra SE-R Spec V. The early 2.0 Turbo Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the Scion FR-S/Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ are also similar performers.
The car obviously has the iconic retro Mustang look, and if you can get one of the rare "Pony Package" models you'll find its handling is enhanced by having the GT's wheels & suspension from the factory. Also note that insurance on the V6 is going to be substantially less than on a GT, especially for younger drivers.
If you are a tuner/modder there are a plethora of options available to fit most any budget. You're never going to be Speed Racer with 500hp under the hood, but intake, exhaust and a tune along with upgraded wheels and tires will have the car looking good, sounding good and performing well for a small amount of money spent.
Where regular maintenance is concerned the 4.0L, being a truck engine, is durable and reliable. Oil changes can be performed in the driveway with basic tools and there is plenty of room under the hood to get at spark plugs & etc. without breaking your neck or needing special equipment. The only major gripe I've seen from owners is that the thermostat housing is plastic and will crack and start leaking after a while, so keep an eye on your coolant level. But this part is located on the upper front of the engine and is easy to replace with basic tools.
So if you are in the market for an inexpensive sporty coupe that won't break your wallet with insurance cost or repair bills you might just want to give the 05-10 six cylinder Mustang another look.

No, it's not a car enthusiast's favorite, but there's no reason to have it on this list if all you're gonna say about it is "it's not cool"

Funny how people judge others by the cars they drive. I could drive any car I want...but chose the Prius because it is reliable.....over 600,000 miles on it and still going strong. And no car payments for many years now.

I totally agree with every rating (and could add a few e.g. Malibu 97 - whatever, pretty much any Cadillac, and any BMW with excluding most M-series ), with the exception the Prius. I don't own one, but I respect and am in awe of what Toyota has done with the Prius with it's exceptional gas mileage, and unbeatable reliability. In my book miles per gallon and dependability are both a form of performance. You can't compare 1/4 mile time vs. slalom times vs. ground clearance for negotiating off road courses; likewise you can't compare a Prius base on those standards ... but if you were to compare a Prius vs. any other car based on miles per gallon and reliability/dependability it's unbeatable. Your comment about garnering "no respect" ... dude grow up, I don't respect a guy or a gal just because he or she is driving a 911, a Z06, a 350 Super Duty dually diesel or the latest Jeep with LED lights, and rock crawler suspension... I am more likely to respect the guy/gal in the Prius, as he or she is definitely not "posing" they're just sensible, more than likely mature and comfortable in who they are. I love performance and technology in automobiles at all levels.
    Respectfully,
    Andy
