I've always adored verse 2 of this song, about all of space having insecurities, but animating them all as characters really sent the impact of it over the top. I adore this.
only possible gripe i have is born from a complete lack of knowledge about space and a vague memory of the original: isnt Jupiter a protostar? like I swear that bit is the Supermassive Black Hole just commenting on Jupiter and the Sun, and then Pluto. Cuz that kinda brings it full circle. but hey i dont know shit about space i could totally be wrong here
@@alexanderchristopher4151 Jupiter is called a failed star because it has a similar composition to the sun but just doesn’t have enough mass for hydrogen fusion. which is required to be classified as a star/protostar
@@Cloud-qw2bs I think it's also a reference to how all the gas giants also have rings. Saturn's is most prominent which is why he is the main stoner but he passes the blunt around, which is probably a reference to how Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune ALSO have rings, but theirs are much smaller and hardly noticeable. He directly gives the blunt to Jupiter in one scene, and in the scene where the Supermassive Black Hole is pointing towards Pluto, you can briefly see Uranus reaching for the blunt. And while we don't SEE him pass it to Neptune you can see earlier in the animation that he and Neptune are best buds when they do the armlock thing, so he probably does at times.
Yall, I’m just geeking out at how the light bends around the supermassive black hole as the camera does a perspective change around Pluto- it’s also just animated gorgeously, and the sheer scale is just communicated so well. Just insane
the black hole segment is my absolute favorite, I love the way the sparkles in her eyes flash out one after the other and the way her pupils turn to red sparkles on her glasses right as her actual eyes are shown. it’s just such a well done part
I actually love how Jupiter and Saturn are depicted here, because i'm reminded of when our solar system was being formed, and Jupiter was making a straight collision course for earth, but Saturn's gravity was able to pull Jupiter back. I imagine the big hefty guy in the couch getting pissed and charging toward earth, and the gentle free spirt stoner having to calm him down and talk sense into him.
Jupiter has also saved the inner planets of countless asteroid barrages that would've certainly killed any chance at life. Protective big guy with a bad temper
@@zwiebeldogs Saturn's lesson must've stuck then. Jupiter got told "chill out and don't attack the little guys", took the advice, and eventually became really protective of them. "If any of you asteroids _gets near_ my little bros, I'll shove half of your body into _your_ black hole and throw you into deep space!"
I never heard about that Jupiter going to crash into earth, is that true? Edit: Did more search, it's called the Grand Tack hypothesis, and it might be
Yeah bud thats how it works, its one thing to be a giga star that goes black hole route, but its way different to be one of the oldest MEGA HOLES in well... the whole existence. where you were a black hole just after the big pop in the first place, right at the centre of the GIGA STAR as its core then literally birthing a galaxy around you by consuming the GIGA STAR from the inside and violentely exploding outwards what you didnt consume. Yeah i dont really know where i was going with this other than that the universe is wird as heck.

So far people think its amazing
I hope that people recognize that the band Pluto is playing with, each character is supposed to be one of Pluto's moons: Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra. Cause as soon as I saw the band I was like OMG ITS PLUTOS MOONS but like they're also considered dwarf planets well some of them are but you get what I mean
Thanks man! I was trying to figure out what they were referencing with those characters! So Kerberos is obviously the dog, the reptile has to be hydra, I bet Charon is the skeleton on the drums, I know nothing about Nyx and Styx but I am guessing Nix is the purple one and Styx is the green one. The planets and sun are easy to identify based on their symbols but I wouldn't have got Pluto's moons!
@@subaru4920 I'm hesitating between Styx and Charon, it would make sense that the skellyboy is Styx itself (river of the dead) and the green chick that wears greek-ish clothing at first would be for Charon. People often depict Charon like the Reaper, but, IIRC, he's just supposed to be an ugly, old man in slave's clothing (and a large hat).
The supermassive body being the thing to cause the alignment and groove by pointing out that you don’t need to be a planet to go hard as shit was beautiful
Having him go from a regular boring dude to him pursuing his dreams of astronomy I superduper inspiring. Never expected any less from you Tom. Hats off 🫡
fun fact: pluto and what's generally considered the largest of its moons, charon, share a gravitational center they orbit around that's outside either of them. this means that, while pluto is the more massive of the two, they could be considered a dual planetary system of dwarf planets :)
That's great! Because of all of Pluto's back up musicians (representing his moons) the skeleton drummer is my favorite (in reference to Charon, the ferryman who takes souls across the river Styx)
Love this! Some extra astro facts: 1:05 As pointed out by others, Pluto's backups are his 5 moons: Kerberos (dog), Nyx (night), Charon (ferryman of dead), Styx (river), Hydra (lizard). 1:44 A black hole '10 quadrillion miles away' is NOT a random number, at about 1,600 ly away, it's the distance to the closest known black hole (though there are certainly closer ones undiscovered) 2:03 At the center of our galaxy lies the supermassive black hole Sag A*, with 4.3 million solar masses... But the most massive black holes in other galaxies are at least 20,000 times more massive at ~100 billion solar masses.
Having Pluto perform for the supermassive blackhole, and the other planets joining the party was such a great call! Love the animation, it fits this comfort song so well!
oh man, the more it went on the better this animated clip got. love both black holes designs, the shot where all the planets align is so cool, and the whole ending derailing a bit from the lyrics to tell its own little story was really endearing.

BUT I can say that the whole part between 2:00 to 2:48 managed to capture a shard of that magic. That and the last part with anime Tom going to reprise studies and get renown in his field... Chills. Literal chills.

The verse at 3:00 was life changingly beautiful, like it’s such a simple premise but the music backed with how authentic it feels it’s just so damn good
2:15 That "Hot shit" might have been the next lyric, but judging by the look on Pluto's face, thats also a fully valid reaction to Sagittarius just showing up like that
@@Choshako "at the center of them all" implies that it's the center of our galaxy, which would be Sagittarius A*. TON 618 is the center of a different galaxy.
I have no idea how to explain this other than this video is perfectly showing the uplifting side and the silliness of the song. Especially the supermassive black hole bit. And the details of the characters having the shirts of symbols is satisfying.
There's something about "biggest baddest supermassive" that makes my brain itch. I've been listening to this song on repeat for a while and it's boosted my mood greatly
The face that Pluto and his moons have when the supermassive blackhole is staring at him with those crazy eyes is hilarious!! A perfect mix of apprehension and confidence!
The ending made me feel so good. I've actually recently started studying space in university (like, not even a month now), and just seeing what I could become just makes me feel so happy and determined. Thank you so much!
I like how main lesson is that, yes, don't be ashamed of what you enjoy because you are kick-ass and valid, but I like even more the deeper motif of two-way appreciation from people of high authority to low authority. The second verse of all the celestial bodies being jealous of the more powerful one where then only the supermassive entity can recognize that Pluto being kickass was valid is the most obvious example. The nod at the astronaut and 3:27 at the sheer confidence of Tom Cardy walking in is amazing, and the 3:18 celebration by Pluto and it's moons to the person who was inspired by Pluto to be awesome is also cool. This music video is cool. Hell yeah.
The shot from 2:16 to 2:25 is absolutely phenomenally animated, holy shit. H.S is a fave Tom Cardy tune of mine and this animation surprised me. Good shit, good shit. Hot shit, even.
Pluto and the bands moment of shock/fear when the supermassive black hole watches them is the funniest visual gag to me. Pluto - "I'm cool af!" The largest most terrifying thing known to space - "Hell yeah you are!" Pluto and the band - 0_0
Absolutely love this. The original song was great fun already, but this animation elevates it. Well done to all involved! In particular; the light glare on the shades of the Black Hole as she turns her head is just stunning.
This is by far my favorite song you've done, I love how you used the vastness of space, which is usually used to symbolize nihility and the meaninglessness of our small speck of dust, but you instead used it to inspire and encourage, that the vastness of the universe look to the smallest of us as hot shit.
I dont know how intentional it is, but I feel like this song hits on another truth beyond the obvious(and appreciated) message. That even if we shouldn't value the biggest and the best, the next, the status, whatever, that when people who have those things recognize your efforts it has meaning and value. The supermassive blackhole is what everyone seems to want to be, he is a leader in this metaphor and he recognizes Pluto, the struggles and good qualities of someone without power trying their best, and that resonates with me as being important. As important as it is to believe in yourself and do your best it is just as important to lift others up when you are in those positions of power and authority. And its something I think Tom does with this song, I think he is Pluto, the supermassive blackhole, and the scientist at both the start and end of his career. He has power now in the form of followers and fame and knows what its like to not have that, and Im grateful for having both aspects recognized in this song, both being uplifted, both being told what their responsibility is. When you are a nobody and have nothing your responsibility is to yourself, to believe in and better yourself. When you have power you have a responsibility to help other people get to where you are, to create a cycle of creation and improvement instead of one of destruction and greed. Thanks for contributing to that positive cycle Tom. And more importantly, thanks to the artists for drawing all the planets so hot
What an AMAZING animation! Gosh I loved the effect of the black hole at 2:18, and the expressions and designs are very charming! It enhances the song sooo much! I loved it a bunch, congrats to the animator!!
1. Obsessed with Space 2. Wearing a Starfleet delta on his red shirt 3. Sneaks a "47" references in at the end with Mission 47. I see you, Tom Cardy. 🖖👀
This video both PERFECTLY captured what I imagined in my head whenever I listen to this song and filled in the parts I wasn't creative enough to imagine, plus translating the best parts of Tom's original video, like the part where the Supermassive Black Hole points out Pluto to the other planets. By far the part that impresses me the most are the character designs are so simple, but so distinctive, and somehow so fitting to the way each planet (and celestial body) could be personified. From the obvious stuff, like Venus and Neptune being obviously based on the Greek/Roman gods, to more subtle stuff I wouldn't even think of, like the Sun having literal "sun spots" to Jupiter's massiveness being captured in him being a round old man (with the white cloudy hair possibly referencing that the planet is kind of a massive storm), and, yes, like everyone's mentioned, Pluto's moons being his the back-up singers. Also, that ending made this song more motivating for me than it already is; I just imagined the song ending with the singer walking out of their house to face the world and get ready to show them what they're made of, but that ending got me outright emotional. Perfect work for one of Tom's best songs.
The guitarist for Queen felt the same way, then when he was done with being in the most famous band in the world he went and got his pHD in Astrophysics.
and honestly i love how earth has this "absolutely braindead but kept around due to how cute they are/+existence without their antics would just get mind numbing" vibe to em
I really liked the details in character design reflecting the planets and their respective gods somewhat. Some context on that note for those not versed in greek/roman mythology: The planet names are all based on gods of the roman main pantheon. The aka. names are their greek counterparts. Pluto - aka Hades, roman/greek Satan His five moons: Charon - named after the underworlds boatman Nix - goddess of Night Hydra - the Lernaean Hydra, cut off a head of this ancient beast and it will grow two more Styx - the infamous underworld river Kerberos - also Cerberus, the (usually) 3 headed hellhound The other planets(from closest to farthest from the sun): Mercury - aka. Hermes, god of Travellers and a lot of other things Venus - aka. Aphrodite, goddess of love and fertility Mars - aka. Ares, god of war Terra - aka. Gaea, mother earth (Ceres - aka. Demeter, goddess of agriculture and the other dwarf planet in the solar system not represented here) Jupiter - aka. Zeus, chief god wielder of thunder and lightning (usually shown as an old man with a white beard) Saturn - also a god of agriculture, Chronos the titan of time can be interpreted as his greek counterpart Uranus - god of the sky counterpart to Gaea(mother earth) Neptune - aka. Poseidon, god of the seas Genuinly needed a while to notice that Plutos gang was based on its real satellite objects/moons, nicely done.

Saturn being a stoner and his weed smoke being his ring is absolutely amazing! XD
I also love that Earth is a little monkey boy with a shit-eating grin lmao
Why *is* Saturn a stoner? Like, is it just blowing smoke rings? cuz, Valid.
But I'm wondering if there's more im missing 😂
Saturn also gets Jupiter baked before they all line up for Pluto's concert.
@@ZenofireX I just lookes it up quickly. Both Saturn and Jupiter are Gas plantes. I assume thats part of the joke.

I thought Styx would've been the drummer
Because

@@MazTheMeh16 Also bones are human sticks
@@subaru4920 I'm hesitating between Styx and Charon, it would make sense that the skellyboy is Styx itself (river of the dead) and the green chick that wears greek-ish clothing at first would be for Charon. People often depict Charon like the Reaper, but, IIRC, he's just supposed to be an ugly, old man in slave's clothing (and a large hat).
Cards on the table I thought it was that skeletons, werewolves, lizard people and such lived on Pluto but your idea makes more sense.

fun fact: pluto and what's generally considered the largest of its moons, charon, share a gravitational center they orbit around that's outside either of them. this means that, while pluto is the more massive of the two, they could be considered a dual planetary system of dwarf planets :)
That's great! Because of all of Pluto's back up musicians (representing his moons) the skeleton drummer is my favorite (in reference to Charon, the ferryman who takes souls across the river Styx)

1:44 A black hole '10 quadrillion miles away' is NOT a random number, at about 1,600 ly away, it's the distance to the closest known black hole (though there are certainly closer ones undiscovered)
2:03 At the center of our galaxy lies the supermassive black hole Sag A*, with 4.3 million solar masses... But the most massive black holes in other galaxies are at least 20,000 times more massive at ~100 billion solar masses.
10 quadrillion is the line at 1:42

The amount of visual space puns is astronomical
hehe... I see what ya did there XD
2:19 I love how the biggest, baddest, supermassive thing to exist is bending light around him during the panning shot.
Hell yeah.

Pluto and the bands moment of shock/fear when the supermassive black hole watches them is the funniest visual gag to me.
Pluto - "I'm cool af!"
The largest most terrifying thing known to space - "Hell yeah you are!"
Pluto and the band - 0_0

I really liked the details in character design reflecting the planets and their respective gods somewhat.
Some context on that note for those not versed in greek/roman mythology:
The planet names are all based on gods of the roman main pantheon. The aka. names are their greek counterparts.
Pluto - aka Hades, roman/greek Satan
His five moons:
Charon - named after the underworlds boatman
Nix - goddess of Night
Hydra - the Lernaean Hydra, cut off a head of this ancient beast and it will grow two more
Styx - the infamous underworld river
Kerberos - also Cerberus, the (usually) 3 headed hellhound
The other planets(from closest to farthest from the sun):
Mercury - aka. Hermes, god of Travellers and a lot of other things
Venus - aka. Aphrodite, goddess of love and fertility
Mars - aka. Ares, god of war
Terra - aka. Gaea, mother earth
(Ceres - aka. Demeter, goddess of agriculture and the other dwarf planet in the solar system not represented here)
Jupiter - aka. Zeus, chief god wielder of thunder and lightning (usually shown as an old man with a white beard)
Saturn - also a god of agriculture, Chronos the titan of time can be interpreted as his greek counterpart
Uranus - god of the sky counterpart to Gaea(mother earth)
Neptune - aka. Poseidon, god of the seas
Genuinly needed a while to notice that Plutos gang was based on its real satellite objects/moons, nicely done.
Also Jupiter's nose is the big red spot
Thats Earth, not Ceres
Also Pluto is nothing like satan
