Probably said by now, but... Heat the wheel nut/bolt might loosen it by expansion/contraction. Might.. Soak it in WD40 or any good penetrating oil (ATF and kero is pretty good). Leave it for a lot of hours. Use the right size SIX point socket. The type the gorillas used to tighten the nut! To get the socket on the nut ( fully), heat the socket to expand it. (I thought that's what you were going to do when you boiled the jug!). No good even attempting to loosen it until the socket is all the way engaged with the nut. Then use a BFP to help with leverage on that breaker bar (BFP is Ozzie for a Big F.. Pipe, related to a BFH). Hope that helps.
I find having an 1/2 drive old socket set with imperial and Whitworth sizes in to abuse with a hammer in this way is a godsend when your struggling with rounded bolts!
A 3ft chunk of scaffolding pole would make a good sleeve for your socket bar and give you more leverage. Unless your alloys are really something special I would forget about locking wheel nuts - you're just storing up problems for the future, especially if you use tyre shops. Nice finish anyhow, the car looks good.
How correct you are. Also anything but a carpenters hammer. Done away with all locking nuts on my RR after having having a recovery simply cos the locking key split.
I was with you every step of the way..except the torch. 06 LR3 in Minnesota ( salt..rust etc). never has a simple job of removing a tire become more “British” than on these “modern” LR’s. Well done.
These look similar to the transit alloy wheel nuts. I chisel the top off the nut to reveal a proper steel 19mm nut under the 'tin' cover if they collapse or go out of shape
Similar happened to me. Sacrificed a thin wood chisel to chip off the nut cover then a deep 21mm socket after heating with torch and a ratchet long arm torque wrench.
The locking wheel nut key is down to someone using an air wrench to tighten your nuts up (ooooer Mrs) I've put a label on mine saying "do not use air wrench with this key" when the car has had tyres changed or a service I remind the fitter /service agent not to do it and then watch them. When I've collected car from service first thing I do now is check the key whilst still at dealership. After I had a puncture and found the locking wheel nut key had been put away damaged after a service! I think the JLR wheel nuts are known as being a bit 💩 and lots of people replace them with stainless steel versions I believe.
Had the same problem on my 2007 land rover discovery 3 (same wheel nuts)but the locking wheel nut. Ended rounding it off even tryed whelding a nut on didn't work had to take it to my local garage who did it in the end. Thay are a common fault.
I had this issue with a fiesta , the bloody locking nut snapped off - 2 off the 4 wheels I smacked on a socket but the others rounded , luckily I could get a grinder in and cut the nuts off
Advice - 2:06 you need to use a rubber mallet or a block of wood not to damage your socket 😁. And you are using the exact opposite! 😂Nice wheels and good job, though Happy 2020 🥂😉
Well that was entertaining. You need to start by buying yourself a proper hammer. as in Lump Hammer and if you can run to it get yourself a cordless impact driver. Happy Fullfating
You’re right. I’ve actually got a lump & a sledge hammer... but they’re buried in the shed somewhere. If I’d known this was going to be such a pain I’d have fetched it! 😂 An impact driver is on the cards though 👍
Great video man! I wish I would have seen this before knocking out the center of the lug nut covers on my back wheels and having to break them apart. My question for you is: what brand/size lug nut did you buy to replace the old ones on your RR? I would like to do the same thing so I don't have this problem in the future. Thanks!
Hi there, I think I actually found that set available on Ebay & bought the locking nuts separately. I would advise using a more ‘meaty’ lump hammer to knock a socket onto the wheel nut if you’re about to do something similar 👍
As said previously, common land rover 'swollen nut syndrome'. Definitely get a piece of scaffolding tube. None of the Ali rubbish. Have you logged on to the definitive FFRR forum?
Always pull up when using a force bar, you'll have way more force. When pushing down you won't apply more force than a fraction of you bodyweight. Properly pulling up with your legs protect your back, pushing down is bad for your kidneys.
I've got an extractor set from Irwin www.irwin.com/tools/browse/screw-bolt-extractors/bolt-extractors Dont know if you can get them up to and over 22mm but they work great.
@@Nut_Job. I would always recommend using some form of lubricant on the wheel nuts they will tighten easier and stay tight same when doing the brakes use copper grease on the bolts making them easier to service next time and stopping them rusting
studs unified 9/16 your nut size 7/8 don't jerk bar put a piece p ipe on it pull UP gently best with LR Brace made good stuff, drift on with a dumpy hammer using a 22 or 7/8 on a rattle gun stuffs them. just nip with a rattle gun
I really like these videos so thanks I've got a Freelander and really want a range rover but I've been a wimp about buying a cheap one but I think I'm going to bite the bullet after watching your videos so thanks keep posting 😁

Your doing a great job keep the videos coming buddy Birmingham

The nuts are a bit of a funny size I keep spare ones in the boot and yep no good with a toffee hammer the bigger the better on a rr lol
Commonly known in LR circles as swollen nuts
🤣🤣

I've had the same problem but I used a lump hammer, only had to hit it twice.
What happened to " not damaging the socket"!?
Should have used a longer socket bar..with extension and kept steady pressure not bouncing up n down..longer the leverage the better...
Well done with the seized nut. It was probably whacked on without a care by some air-hammer jockey.
Get a short piece of scaffold bar to slip over the bar to get you more leverage
michael dodd and always pull up, don’t press down. When it slips pulling up no drama, slips when pushing down hard = loss of teeth...
Fair enough I suppose. I’ve always pushed... habits are hard to break sometimes
I used a steel pole from a trampoline on the breaker bar. About 4 feet long. Pull up instead of pushing down. Don’t use a ratchet.
5:16 need a break! ) Also such bolts are suitable from P38. it was necessary to put a pipe on the knob for more effort!

Mine SNAPPED off. Oh good fun.
Cuppa solves many a problem
all this work for a Land Rover?
Always pull up when using a force bar, you'll have way more force. When pushing down you won't apply more force than a fraction of you bodyweight. Properly pulling up with your legs protect your back, pushing down is bad for your kidneys.
That is an excellent point, thanks 👍
Would heating the socket work ?
I've got an extractor set from Irwin

Dont know if you can get them up to and over 22mm but they work great.
there's always one, of something on a Landy or RR :)
If you put a little copper slip on the threads when re- fitting they will always come undone....
Yeah, I know some people do this... but I believe this is incorrect procedure with wheel nut/bolts. I could be wrong of course...
Nut Job, Well you can lead a horse to water ........
I apply copper slip between the two rotating washers as well as the thread and always tighten to the recommended torque of 103 pounds feet.
J J Yeah, like I say I know a lot of people do it... I remember being told by a shop tech that it’s actually bad practice for wheel nuts/bolts though.
@@Nut_Job. I would always recommend using some form of lubricant on the wheel nuts they will tighten easier and stay tight same when doing the brakes use copper grease on the bolts making them easier to service next time and stopping them rusting
I ended up driving to Land Rover and they found my locking wheel nut in the boot of my car. Under a flap to the left hand side.

If you can't repair it with hammer, there is no problem at all.
1 mm smaller = bigger hammer
Irwin bolt grips
Benjamin Bulow
That would be ‘Stage 2’...

new front discs and brake pads I like. to know the animal who put the wheel back on with the wheel nuts like that 🤬
Who put then on King Kong 🙈
Buy a decent hammer ffs
Loosen the others and go for a drive round a field
Best comment
🤣
nope never mate .. looks like you need to spend some coin on a good set of tools. and never put faulty bits back on ya car lol
Change that one nut.
What's in a name? ;-)
Enjoyed video but blow your nose off camera so we don't have to watch /listen to you sniff every 2 mins
Lol!!
Another poor design by lr. Next time use a 23mm socket
