I was stuck trying to get these lugnuts out of my Avalanche till 8 pm at night! I was going to give up until I watched this GENIUS video! You made the rest of my night so much easier and I was able to change the wheel bearings. Keep up the great videos!
I'm starting out as a tech. This has been invaluable to me. Thank you so much for explaining and for mentioning that a bit of anti seize on the head will go a long way.
BRO!!! YOU JUST SAVED MY ASS!!! I’d broken 2 breaker bars, two 1/2 -> 3/8 drive adapters, I’m too ecstatic to recall the rest! First supercharged vehicle and I stumbled into it looking for something for my daughter. Sooo, now she gets my truck and pappa go vroooom! Truly made the night, if I wasn’t broke AF, I’d send more lol 😂
A great display of how a few minutes of patience is better than an hour of primitive brute force that destroys things. Yes I have my own stories of what was brought to me from seized wheel nuts. One of those was the deciding factor in never letting a customer assist me in any way.
I am so grateful for your video explaining where the Lug is Really frozen. I spent over an hour trying brute force and extractors and was about to drill. Thankfully I took a break and found this video!! A sledge hammer, an impact socket, a breaker bar with a pipe extension and that lug was off in 3 minutes! Many thanks!
I've got one obnoxious seized lug nut on my old F-150 & I've used a ton of PB Blaster but my socket and breaker bar still won't loosen it. I'm hoping this method does! 3 tires down, just one more to go!!!
I was working on an 85 300zx that sat for 20 years, lug nuts were are all seized solid and even my biggest impact couldnt get em, found your vid and it took some meaty whacks from a small sledge but they came off after. Big thanks!
Would you consider a torque Multiplier Wrench, also maybe some penetrative fluid around the nut first? I have a load of old stubborn nuts to remove, all with the chrome covers. Looking into best method, concern i might snap the lug nut bolts
Brother you are a champ! I've been mechanicing for 40 yrs. I had 4 tires put on my wife's Dodge Grand Caravan last month by a small shop. I went to take a tire off to get to the filler tube of the gas tank while replacing a fuel pump. The tire shop used impacts and way over torqued all the nuts. I got 2 wheels off and destroyed half the lug nuts. I got on the 3rd wheel and got 4 of the five off and the last one was so jammed up I wore it down to 50% of its size. I used penetration oil, extractor sockets. I was about to try heat when I found your video. I was like ,I don't have anything to lose. IT WORKED!!! Thank you for sharing.
Great video! I just wasted an hour with an impact wrench, an hour with a breaker bar, about a quarter can of PB Blaster, and two trips to my local auto parts store. Exhausted, I decided to call it quits for the day and was planning on getting a good nights sleep and then going back at it tomorrow with a torch, to heat the lug nuts. No doubt you saved me a couple hours labor, and a migraine , with this solution. Thank you in advance.
Kenny...I LOVE YOU!!!! SURELY i WAS GOING TO END UP MUSHED AND IN BIG TROUBLE. i TRIED EVERYTHING , even HEAT, BREAKER BAR AND FOR SURE i WAS GOING TO RUIN EVERYTHIGN....THE HAMMER ON THE SOCKET FINALLY WORKED...PRAISE THE LORD! OVER 2 HOURS TO GET OFF ONE LUG NUT BECAUSE THE LAST MECHANIC DID not APPLY ANTI SEIZE...Grrrrr I wish him the same problem! This is exactly why I am back to doing MY OWN BRAKE JOBS!
I have for years. As Kenny says, grease or anti-seize on the lug to wheel surface, not the threads. Also have put anti-seize on wheels after having to kick them loose from the rotor because of tight clearances/corrosion 'welding' themselves on. After wire wheeling the surfaces first.@@ChromeLuxx
I am a fan of the torque wrench. In this case, dissimilar metals reacted with road salt. I never liked aluminum rims. My love for the torque wrench is the prevention of warped rotors. I learn from your videos every time.
Many Thanks man. I had a lug stuck and the tire shop was not able to remove it. Kept on hammering with the Milwaukee mid torque wrench. Got the van home, watched your video. Took out the hammer (small one though) and went crazy. Used the Dewalt new mid torque wrench, 10 seconds tops and it came off. Thank God. Saved the rim, stud and money.
You're the man! I've been fighting a stuck locking nut for a week. I hammered on a 19mm 12-point socket and it wouldn't budge, it just worked it's way off. Then I slid a 3/4 deep socket over it, banged on it with a heavy hammer and hit it again with the impact and boom - spun right off. I've been fighting that thing for hours before watching your video.
Hi Kenny, had similar experiences as you describe here, whack socket with hammer and off she comes. Dammed alloy wheels look good but give me a steel wheel anyday particularly if it is on a 4x4. Also, if you deal with Toyota cars they use a very substantial nut with a generous shoulder that protrudes into the wheel deeper than most types, I find this quite superior to most popular designs. Great video as always fella, keep it up 👍
For a whole week I'll try to get the lug nuts off my truck until I see your video today and it worked exactly the way you said it would so I want to thank you you're awesome thank you
Thank you so much for this video. I was needing to change my swollen factory lug nuts on my Toyota Tundra and you saved me a lot headache on this one. I had watched another video from a different guy who drilled his out. Your method was simple. Blessings to you!
Glad I found your video! After hours of frustrating brute force work on a stubborn nut, a couple hammer blows as you demo'd and it came right off! Thanks much!
I have seen so many Tire places put wheel nuts on with an M8 impact driver, then checked it with a torque wrench. They don't move, but goes click. Fools have way over tightened the nut. I use a Dewalt impact in the second setting, then torque to 90tr/lb.
Excellent video. I've never had this happen to me, being a driveway mechanic. After watching this I'll definitely be cleaning them up and applying a little anti seize! I always torque them btw. Appreciate your videos
UPDATE: Thank you, Sir! Your BFH concept worked perfectly! The two seized 7/8 inch lugs I finally broke free off my 2017 Jeep GC. Your attention to detail is greatly appreciated. SALUTE!
Sir… YOU JUST SAVED MY ASS. After trying everything for about an hour. I put the socket on the broken lug nut and hit it 4 good times with a hammer. Use the breaker bar and it came right off. Took less than 5 minutes. THANK YOU SIR!!!!!
valuable demonstration. I was thinking "HAMMER" all the way up to your first showing of the dead blow hammer! Steel wheels not generally a problem but alloys of aluminum are like a grip surface, promoting a physical locking of the nut. If you have an old car that has had many wheel removals you will note that the seat in the wheel that engages the nut will be washed out, the grinding of the nut when tightening causes an actual removal/displacement of the wheel alloy. I use a little lube on my lug nuts and do not tighten to excess. I never have used a torque wrench since starting wrench turning in 1965, snug up firm but easy enough that you can change a wheel with a cheap lug wrench.
Just spent an hour w a small torch getting 5 lug nuts off on a HD truck, last three didn’t budge, tried this trick, easy off. Thanks wish id seen the vid sooner
Thanks Mate from Sydney! Got my rusty boat trailer wheel bolts off after watching this, also sprayed with wd40 and used an extended lever, very pleased 👏
Greetings from northen Sweden and a fellow mechanic, more or less. Been working on cars, tractors, city buses, boats, ATV, snowmobiles. When lug nuts are not seized but the rim is,, air hammer, works on brake drums too. Sometimes when the rim is stuck I put the nuts back on by hand and drive the vehichle with tight turns, sounds like a gunshot sometimes when the rim comes loose. Stay safe and take care.
Hello my Swedish Brother !! I am actually Swedish myself !! I was born in Goteborg into the Holmqvist/Wessel family !! If you're on Facebook, look me up !!
If the tires are rotated each year, this won't happen 😃 because they don't have time to bond like that. The Ford F-150 lugs and wheels do this also. I bought one used and most of the nuts were totally frozen on. I told my wife I needed a much larger impact wrench lol... which got all but one of them off. I paid someone to remove the last one (used heat). I replaced all my nuts with solid ones (no dumb decorative nut cover) that are chromed. It's been years now and no problems.
Going to try it. Was ready to change rear brake pads on my '07 F150 and I knew getting the lugs off was going to be the toughest part. Sure enough 4 came off with the air gun, one with a breaker bar and pipe but the 6th one wouldn't budge. Rounded it off slightly when the breaker bar and socket slipped off. Just glad it didn't break off leaving the taper like you showed. Tomorrow I'll use the dead blow and see if it works.
Thanks! This makes sense. I have a tractor wheel I was heating the lugs and cooling with WD. With so many lug nuts it was very time consuming. This will work better.
Good tip, I need to remember this one as it works on all nuts/bolts and can save them from breaking. Mayhew makes a pneumatic bolt breaker that I’ve used from time to time on stubborn fasteners that attaches to an air hammer and you turn with a wrench.
I've got one seized lug nut on the final rim of my 1986 F-150 (already swapped out 3 tires) and I've used a ton of WD-40 (that worked on the other lug nuts that were frozen on the other rims), & a ton of PB Blaster on this last frustrating one, so I'm going to try this out! I really want to do it myself rather than call AAA (none of my neighbors have impact wrenches or many tools at all - I have more tools than most of my neighbors), so wish me good luck!!!
Very helpful! I hope this works on mine that we’re probably over tongued! I twisted two of the lug nuts complete off! And left that acorn part on there.
I've been working on cars for over 30 years and this little tip was new to me. But boy did it ever work! And saved me from having to drill out and replace my studs! Thank you very much
Thank you for the good tip here is one for you i would have used a hole saw over the stud done that before and if your lucky you will not mess the threads on the stud up😊 have a blessed day
I've been in this situation on the side of the road .. the frustration was crazy .. tried everything .. fail after fail .. it's crazy how much trouble ONE stuck nut can cause 😂😂🏁
My dad taught me to put anti-seize on the threads but not on the face 40 years ago. That was back when all wheels were steel and lug nuts were steel. I can see now how with aluminum wheels and steel lug nuts you would get and electrolysis happening causing corrosion and for them to stick together. His worry was if anti-seize was used on both the threads and the face the lug nut could come loose. Do you recommend reducing the torque by 20-30% since it is a "lubricated" thread when anti-seize is used.
Canadian guy here Remove the chrome cap and heat the steel nut with the torch. Comes off every time. If the nut is a 19mm with the cap is off it’s actually an 18mm. Cheers
Thanks for the great video. I think the hammering helped. I was working on a mcgard lock nut and it was so tight I snapped the key. I ended up welding the key part to a nut and heating the lock lugnut with my induction heater and hitting it with my impact. But it came off after the big hammer blow. So thanks again as I would never dream of using a sledgehammer like that ( 2012 Chevy equinox) not a fan. Now onto the nut that has the chrome cover that rusted out. Off to get a 20mm impact socket.😂
I had to heat mine up with a blowtorch. They came off but it partly melted my plastic center caps. LOL Had I known about this method, I'd have saved myself some time and money. Good video. Will try it next time.
What is a wheel vs rim? Rims vs. Wheels: The wheel is the metal unit that attaches the wheel hub to an automobile via an axle, while rims are the outermost part of the wheel assembly. Perhaps think of it this way: “rim” means “edge,” and rims are located on the edges of your wheels.
The lug cap just got loose, the reason why it worked because when he hammered the socket it press the lug cap back into place. Roadside assistance tech here.
Hello Kenny, Thank you for this video. Definitely going out and buying a dead blow hammer. I have lugs that don’t want to loosen. I will let you know the results when finished. Any recommendations on best replacement lugs for a 2014 GMC Sierra? Thank you.
Mine is not only seized, when I put the impact to it, it completely rounded the lug nut, the socket was the right size and fit very snug, I was going to take it to a shop oh, I was just curious how they would go about getting it off without having to replace the stud afterwards
Do you have a video of removing stripped locking wheel lug nuts? I have a tundra my locking lug nuts are stripped. I even had a dealership try to get them off they told me to bring it back another time. Once I get them off I’m throwing those things straight in the trash and getting the spline lug nuts I have on my other wheel studs.
I don't have one unfortunately. Those locks can be a real pain . There is a special "Twist" socket or "Stripped lug nut socket" that is designed for that purpose. Its basically for rounded out fasteners, but made for lugs . You can buy a kit on Amazon but don't by the cheap ones as they usually don't work well
Thank you great video . I have a jaguar that has the same problem . Lugs stuck won’t budge . Thank you for your video I will try it your way 🙏Thank you great video
5 Star Chrysler tech, yep, Chrylers lugs and rims notorious for this problem. Torque lugs nuts to spec, and still when vehicle come back for next service, lug nuts difficult to remove. Doesn't help the cover on the nut because , the nut cover , cushions the blow from the impact gun. I had 3/4 impact gun ready for times like this. Another issue, the Chrysler rims corrode very easily, builts up corrosion between the rotor and rim contributing to the problem. I have to add, that, at the dealership, I ran bigger air lines and air fittings for all my tools than everyone else at the shop. Even though the dealership worked on passenger vehicles and light trucks.
Snapped a stud one time.. i also put a lil grease in my lug nuts to avoid the rust sieze as well..but yes lug to wheel sieze is an issue sometimes as well
Simple... I grab my IR stud breaker 1/2" impact. It comes of or I break it off. When it doesn't want to come off, I inform the customer of this problem and let them know the stud/nut will likely have to be replaced. If it does break, that's exactly what I do. If it doesn't break, I confirm the stud/nut combination is still serviceable. If not, I also replace the system. Problem solved the right way. I've never seen the steel cone locked to the aluminum where the hex head would break off before the cone loosened. Make no mistake, I am a professional who has removed 1,000's of wheels.
Wish I'd seen this earlier 😅 mine started twisting, hopefully can get it tomorrow without breaking. Had a feeling it was the base seizing, I put spray of fluid film in the wheel lug holes and of course on the back face before I remounted the rest of the wheels.
So if it's frozen to the rim that'll snap my studs when I use a breaker bar? I'm at 3/5 studs broke. I put pb blaster on the last 2 and am going to try the hammer I guess.

Glad I could help! Thanks for watching. Keep wrenching 🔧
No shit genius ! I’m almost 70 but still rotating tires .
YOU ARE A REAL AMERICAN HERO. I thought all hope was lost until i watched this. Great trick.

I am impressed. I'm a Tool and Die Maker that works on his car and truck and I did not think about the taper being the problem. Thanks. Great video.
Thank you so much! My husband did this after working on the rim for over an hour and it worked in minutes!!

People torque them down way more than necessary too
More times then none of the person is doing burnouts it will stick
Yeah fookin idiots over tightening!
Tire shops use air tools to tighten. Not a good idea. Easy to over torque.
That's because auto manufacturers tell people to torque to 150 foot pounds

Hi Kenny, had similar experiences as you describe here, whack socket with hammer and off she comes. Dammed alloy wheels look good but give me a steel wheel anyday particularly if it is on a 4x4. Also, if you deal with Toyota cars they use a very substantial nut with a generous shoulder that protrudes into the wheel deeper than most types, I find this quite superior to most popular designs.

You know the old saying….”work smarter…not harder”…you sir are a genius…
Good information...
I've seen guys hammer the wheel nuts on with a impact so fast that the friction welds the nut to the wheel
Thank you for a great explanation on what's happening to the lug nut
I always put anti seize compound on all my jobs. Make it easier for the next guy
Thanks! This makes sense. I have a tractor wheel I was heating the lugs and cooling with WD. With so many lug nuts it was very time consuming. This will work better.
I never knew this i always assumed it seized to the stud man great video i learned something new makes total sense
The taper of the lug nut kind of acts like a holding taper.. like in machine shop tools
It’s a case of dissimilar metals bonding Had it happen to me with valve stems , aluminum valve stems bonded to steel valve caps.
Good tip, I need to remember this one as it works on all nuts/bolts and can save them from breaking. Mayhew makes a pneumatic bolt breaker that I’ve used from time to time on stubborn fasteners that attaches to an air hammer and you turn with a wrench.

Shocking ! Very Good tip
Awesome tip. Thank you for the post.
You can buy a kit on Amazon but don't by the cheap ones as they usually don't work well
you saved me! Wish I would have watched this first before doing my first tire on my rv. the stud bolt wound of spinning into the drum.
Thank you great video . I have a jaguar that has the same problem . Lugs stuck won’t budge . Thank you for your video I will try it your way 🙏Thank you great video
I always learn something new from you Thank you
Two dissimilar metals contacting each other create the worlds greatest thread locker. Mother nature truly is amazing 👏
THIS video SAVED me! MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
Snapped a stud one time.. i also put a lil grease in my lug nuts to avoid the rust sieze as well..but yes lug to wheel sieze is an issue sometimes as well
You are the guy I want to live next door to
And I’ve been in a business for 45 years
This video saved most definitely saved me, extra frustration and paying a shop to remove them
Worked perfectly. You saved my day. Thanks!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching & keep wrenching
Great tip!
Thanks for sharing

Corrosion from Galvanic action bonds the Steel Nut to the Alloy Wheel. Coat the taper on the nut or Wheel with NeverSeize.
A great teaching video. Thank you.
Wish I'd seen this earlier 😅 mine started twisting, hopefully can get it tomorrow without breaking. Had a feeling it was the base seizing, I put spray of fluid film in the wheel lug holes and of course on the back face before I remounted the rest of the wheels.
Thanks a lot…

What if the Lug nut is striped and seezed?? I have a Snap on turbo socket set but its 3/8... I guess I'm going to buy half inch turbo socket as well
So if it's frozen to the rim that'll snap my studs when I use a breaker bar? I'm at 3/5 studs broke. I put pb blaster on the last 2 and am going to try the hammer I guess.
Sometimes the threads and the seat can both seize.
I always lube both with a good synthetic grease every time I remove a tire.
Awesome solution! And I subscribed to your channel, BECAUSE you waited till the end of your video to ask me.
Will this work on other parts as well? Such as an exhaust manifold bolt that will not break losse?
Great solution thx. Haven't needed it yet, but good to know.
I hope you will never have to deal with swollen nuts. Thanks for watching 🔧
Great video, about to a friends later today, for sure doing this first, thanks so much ,take care and God bless!!
Nice advice. How do you feel about anti seize on wheel studs?
I don't recommend doing it . It will change the torque specs quite a bit . Leading to overtightening
