It’s crazy how long Nintendo has been around for and how successful it continues to be.
Technically they’ve been around since the late 1800s which is crazy to think about considering how popular they are now. It’s super cool seeing a old company still be relevant.
It's true though. They started out as a playing card company in the late 1800s. @@junior-OG
This is why I invest in them through my brokerage account. Stock ticker NTDOY
@@junior-OG Nintendo was founded in 1889
@@junior-OGthey were selling trading cards way way way before the pokemon company. Should have researched before clowning yourself lmao
I still have my Gameboy Advance SP and original Pokemon Sapphire and it's soo nostalgic for me to fire it up from time to time
I grew up with that Donkey Kong Game & Watch and played the hell out of it, I could even "turn it over", wow haven't thought about that term in ages, but yes kiddies, it was once a thing. I was there from the start of Nintendo in the states, and absolutely loved them through childhood and most of my adult life. Sadly, not much of a fan in recent times, as the 3DS was the last system I bought and supported, but I'll always have my great memories from the company I once adored. Thanks for the walk down memory lane Kevin, as it's appreciated.
Why didn't you buy a Switch?
@@Laz3rCat95 I just didn't care for it, as it was a Wii U 2.0 to me(under powered, gimmicks, etc., something that was a jack of all trades and master of none. My son owned one, so I always had access to it, he has an OLED model now as his original unit the sd card slot went bad, so I could still use it with carts as he has tons, but the system is uncomfortable to hold(it's a modifiable OG, so I may do that some day). I'm a portable gamer at heart, and when the Switch first released I had ZERO interest in hooking it to a TV, and I wasn't going to pay for a feature I didn't want or need(the dock was a good part of the cost). Then when the Lite came along, I was planning to get one of those, and each time I thought about it, it was nothing I really had to have, and then the Steam Deck got announced and I just no longer saw the need for one. I have a case and screen protector for it I bought years ago and never got around to needing.
I've also had to send back 7-8 pairs of JC due to drift for my son's current unit, and the Nintendo I grew up with would have never released garbage like that. I also can't stand how they treat fans in current times, as they've made it so bad, that legit content creators get blocked videos, yes some show things against policy, and many do not, but it doesn't matter, they are a bully of a company now, and it's a bad look. They blocked Didyouknowgaming for a legit news story and thank goodness they could fight back and got it re-upped to be viewed, but smaller channels don't have the time or funds to fight back(and they know it).
And the most important reason is I just no longer really like the games they put out, I played BotW on my sons Wii U for 40-50 hours and finally stopped(It just wasn't Zelda to me and was beyond boring). Mario Wonder looks amazing, and is the first game I've been interested from Nintendo since, hell I can't even say, it's been that long. Metroid Dread also looks good, but games like this are far and inbetween as they've been making the same "New" 2D Marios since the DS with Wonder being the only truly "New" one since. Weekly I see amazing indie games released that do what Star Fox no longer does, or Zelda style games that actually play like a Zelda game, not boring open worlds that Zelda has now become. Metroid anyone? A new one is released weekly at all levels of quality, many that match are surpass Nintendo. Wasn't a fan of Mario Odyssey either, as it felt nothing like either Galaxy game(in regards to star collecting), as many of the moons to collect just seemed "there", no real thought in the overall design(seemed rushed to me).
So yeah, I just no longer like the games Nintendo produces, they are really lazy to me, most Switch games are from the Wii U and I get most didn't have a life there due to poor sells. But when they combined R&D departments in to one years ago, for one system instead of handheld and console, I expected much better out put and that never happened. That online service, don't get me started, and when they added N64 that had broken games and features, really? Maybe it's just all a product of current times, but Nintendo used to stand above the mediocrity now they seem to revel in it. As their base is more loyal than any in gaming and they seem to do it because they can. Sorry for the long rant, but you asked. LOL
Fair enough. I have a Switch Lite and enjoy some of the games, but I still prefer the DS.@@chrislaustin
I really liked this video! I think it would be cool if you did more retrospective videos like this! Just a quick thing though: The Game Boy Micro actually couldn't play GB and GBC games natively, from what I remember. Otherwise, fantastic job on this! It was a nice look back.
I can tell you enjoyed making this video. This was a well made video! Great work!
I love your content and your down-to-earth personality no BS no fake hype doesn't seem like you're on 5 energy drinks keep up the great work bro❤
The Game Boy Micro lacks backward compatibility for original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.
It also likes comfortability for both your eyes and your hands. I'm glad I passed on that thing
6:22 Game Boy Advance Micro only played GBA games. It wasn’t backwards compatible.
Also it would’ve been cool if you touched on the Super Game Boy, the Game Boy Player, and the Wii-to-DS connectivity, as those things are essential topics to the lead up to the Switch
3:35 When I had my Game Boy Color, I went out and bought myself a worm light for this very reason. I'm just grateful that it was also compatible with my wide GBA that I bought later
What a great run-through of Nintendo handhelds!
superb video! brings back alot of great memories.
I would love to see another video covering Nintendo’s home consoles!
What a legacy...
What a well put together video! I loved this! Went into it not planning to watch the whole thing... Well here we are, I watched the whole thing! 👏
On a side note would the Virtual Boy be considered a handheld?
I bet he has a matching hat for every colored console. Brrr.
happy to be here
As always, high quality content.. I just wish that sometimes you speak a bit slowly please! Great content still!
I can’t believe the Switch came out 42 years ago…
time flies
Love your Beanies...
You should sell them... 🙂
Very good video overall. As someone who has lived through it and owned most of the systems, I am glad you didn't forget the Game Boy Light. From what I can tell, you only made one mistake and that's the Game Boy Micro can only play Game Boy Advance games. It does not have backward compatibility with GB and GBC cartridges.
I've been looking to get back into handheld gaming for a while now, curious to see what Nintendo has in store.
I remember playing Wario Land 3 in the backseat of the family car, relying on passing streetlights to make progress. If kid me saw the Switch OLED running Mario Odyssey he might actually have imploded
My first handheld system was the Gameboy Color. I've only sporadically through my life had the urge to do mobile gaming, to my next one was the DSi, then the new 3ds XL and the switch. I had a Sony PSP as well.
I had a Nyko light plugin extension on my og gameboy. Nighttime gaming on rides home was pretty much a last resort option because it just wasn't fun without backlit screens.
I still have my Gameboy micro in the box. I got it used years ago and it's in great condition.
I remember getting my 3DS and loving it, first experience with OoT. And then 3 months later they announced an $80 price drop. Bit hey they gave us the ambassador games, 10 NES games early that later came to the eShop and 10 GBA games the remained exclusive for us
Time and time again Nintendo finds success in a less powerful system at a cheap, affordable price
Wow, kinda mind blowing that the New 3DS systems are 10 years old now. The graphics are obviously way far behind what the Switch can do and I’m always impressed with how much better the OLED Switch is than my New 3DS XL when I go between the two, but that thing is still a great console and was my main device going through high school.
To me, the game boy advance was the most beautiful handheld. The GBA SP was cool too, but the original design was very nice.
Still weird that the Gameboy lite didnt release in the West, I feel like that would make a lot of sense.
It was great! I bought one off of eBay here in the US in its time. So glad it was region free.
@@redsyn Dang its region free too? Thats awesome
@@SuperGreninja64, I was so ignorant back then. I would have been so bummed if my games didn't work in it after it showed up. I got the gold body one. Not sure if there were others & I'm too lazy to look as I type this. The Light version had Indiglo™ lighting as a third option on the switch, although I don't think it was the branded variety. I already had the Lite in silver right after it released. While better than the original, having the backlight in the Light was much needed. This is how I spent that paper boy money that I earned in my youth. 😅 A job that is mostly obsolete now...
I LOVE TRANSPARENT SHELLS ON NINTENDO HARDWARE 🗣️🗣️🗣️
“Forget the cell games wanna play DS?”
The NES was my first console and Ice Climber my first game but I never got into the handhelds.
So I hope Nintendo will release a stationary version of the Switch 2 without the screen and joycons.
Just a affordable small console with a controller 😃
What do you guys think is the best special edition handheld Nintendo has ever released?
thats a really good question, i think the majoras mask new 3ds xl looks beautiful... but theres honestly so many amazing 3ds special editions that it's hard to pick. but definitely something from the 3ds.
I'm still looking for the small NEW 3DS model the one with the changeable face plates. They're nearly extinct here in Australia. I'm hoping there still might be one when I go to japan next year.
*Switch* *Lite*
Picked up another turquoise Switch Lite the other night from OfferUp in brand new condition for $130. Loving it again! But this better be my last time. This is the fourth Switch Lite I bought. Broke the previous two turquoises and didn’t like the coral.
I feel like John Wayne in that I Love Lucy episode that had to keep making those footprints on wet cement. I think Switch Lite has become my most *rebought* gadget of all-time. But it’s my absolute favorite form factor of the Switch. Let’s see if fourth time’s the charm. And this is my third turquoise Lite which could be third time’s the turquoise charm.
I’m still mad at myself for messing up the previous Lite I had. I will not make the same mistakes again. I’ll use my SN30 Pro so the left stick will not wear out after 7 months like it did with my first Lite. And I plan to always use the velcro strap when it’s inside the case. No more accidental falls when I forget that the zipper is open and then watch it crashing to the floor resulting in a hairline crack on the screen.
Maybe I’ll get the Switch OLED again but I’m content with only owning the Lite. I just couldn’t tolerate the weight and width of the OLED. And I miss how sharp the graphics looks on the Lite thanks to the smaller screen but higher ppi. I miss the real d-pad too. Only thing to tolerate with my new Lite is the worse battery life. I only had the OLED for 6 days but it definitely had noticeably better battery life.
If I got an OLED again and many do go for $250 or less on OfferUp considering the sellers know the Switch 2 is coming, then I would need to deregister my Lite as the primary console. That gets annoying. I would always need to have an Internet connection for a moment to play my games because it’s no longer the primary. Might as well wait for the Switch 2 instead of getting another OLED.
I think when buying a handheld, I believe comfort is the most important thing to me and then battery life considering I don’t game for hours like before. Probably why I would go for the Retroid Pocket 4 over the Odin 2. True, it’s weaker. Worse battery life. But it’s cheaper by $100 and it’s smaller and more pocketable.
Smaller, lighter, and cheaper are the key factors when purchasing a handheld for me. Size, weight, and hand comfort are all important for me. They’re called handhelds for a reason. You want your hands to feel comfortable when holding it. I don’t want to return to the days carrying bricks like the Game Gear and Atari Lynx. I’ll likely wait for the Switch Lite 2 by 2026.
North American releases -
DS: 2004
DS Lite: 2006
PSP: 2005

PS Vita: 2012
PS Vita slim: 2014

Switch Lite: 2019
Switch 2: 2024?
Switch 2 Lite: 2026?
Wait every two years. There will probably be a smaller PS Portal too which will include Bluetooth. With bigger consoles, it’s waiting three years (2006->2009, 2013->2016, 2020->2023) although PS5 slim is not that much smaller.
We have these large smartphones already including foldables that weigh over 250g. Now you want to carry another brick for gaming? The PSP 2K and the PS Vita 2K models remain the most comfortable handhelds I’ve ever owned. It’s why I still own them and planning not to sell them.
Weight -
PSP: 280g
PSP slim: *189g*
PS Vita: 260g
PS Vita slim: *219g*

Switch Lite: *277g*
Switch OLED: 420g
Pimax Portal Retro: 306g
Odin 2: 420g
Anbernic RG405M: 260g
Retroid Pocket 3+: 235g
Retroid Pocket 4/4 Pro: 251g
Steam Deck: 669g
Steam Deck OLED: 640g
So the Odin 2 is as heavy as the Switch OLED with the Joy-Con attached? I did get used to using the OLED but I still got wrist fatigue after 20 minutes. Not exactly the best size and weight while sitting on a toilet 🚽. I think my max weight for any handheld is no heavier than the Switch Lite but no taller and wider than the Vita.
Steam Deck OLED is the best handheld out there but I’m torn if I really want a PC handheld or not. I really couldn’t tolerate the Switch OLED size, now imagine the Steam Deck? Then I’d play Red Dead Redemption at 30 fps on my Lite and start to think how much better the sequel looks on the more powerful Deck. I can barely hear what they’re saying in RDR because the Switch Lite’s speakers are so soft.
Still waiting for that Switch 2 announcement. I still kept the slim case for the OLED and I’m hoping the Switch 2 (or Switch 2 Lite) can someday fit in it and be of similar size but be much lighter and thinner. This likely wins out for me thanks to the many Nintendo exclusives. I wish there was a Chinese handheld that looks like the RG405M but lighter and still have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
Nintendo was founded on September 23rd, 1889 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻. Wayyyyyyy before the NES. Literally 100 years before.
I remember when Nintendo sold playing cards
It was my Childhood when I was a Baby, and now a woman of 27 years of age, do you ever have a crossover TV movie including Pokemon, Digimon and Yo-Kai Watch
I wonder if people still have the Nintendo card game from 1889
Switch is 100% docked for me
The Game & Watch was released in 1980, NOT 1983.

You state here that the Gameboy Micro can play Gameboy Games when in fact it cannot. It can only play Gameboy Advance Games. No Game Boy or Game Boy Color games work on the console. (Although, if you load roms onto a flash cart they will run, but they were never meant to legitametaly).
GB Micro only plays Advance games
Fuck. I'm old as shit
While, Nintendo has always been pretty dominant in the handheld market, I think recent history (Switch, PC handhelds) and just raw tech horsepower advancements, has a shown that there is a massive market for this.
Nintendo needs to tread lightly. They may be the incumbent in the space, but it will be a much more saturated field going into the Switch 2 and beyond. Sure Nintendo has their console exclusives, but not everyone is a fan of all of them. There is also very little reason to purchase anything third-party on the eshop now that there are more and more powerful pc handhelds entering the mainstream.
I'm not saying a Switch 2 won't do well, but a 7 year Switch 2 will not be able to compete with the Steam Deck 2, Rog Ally 7/8/9, MSI, etc.
first
You weren’t tho.
See kevin, the thing is, Nintendo's handheld department was both a blessing and a curse to the industry. They greatly profited from having a monopoly on the market back then, all while being able to release handhelds with super outdated hardware that came at a super cheap cost due to the old components lol, sure you can be gullible and completely buy the ''withered technology' marketing theory by gunpei yokoi where the logic was to make new innovative ideas with old tech, but it was really an amazing excuse to release dated tech and profit hugely from it, that's marketing lol
but it took Sony's pressure for nintendo to REALLY compete with handhelds, see this is why they say competition is good, the consumer always wins this way because we'll get the most out of the companies this way. Sony's rumors of entering the market, terrified nintendo into cutting the GBA's life in half just to rush out the DS in time to compete. This is why the GBa had a stupid short life cycle, before any really really good titles could be released (it had maybe a dozen very good games, the rest are mediocre lol and i'm a diehard gameboy guy) and the protoype DS design shown at the e3 reveal wasn't too dar from the first launch model. and then it only took1 year for them to completely revise the whole design and release the lite which featured huge changes, infuriating everyone with a launch model that theirs was so outdated that quick lol, that shows how muc hthey really scrambled to rush out the DS, but that also shows how much they feared sony, and they had every right too! this meant that they would no longer be able to idly be lazy and have to take the market much more seriously. the PSP was an amazing success for a first effort, we were finally able to play console games on the go, i remember as a kid being excited at the idea that portable titles wouldn't be so watered down like how they were for game boy releases lol..
and then it happened. God of War, Ratchet and clank, Gran Turismo, GRAND THEFT AUTO...all provided the same exact experience we had on the consoles it was amazing and insane at the same time. nintendo would take note and would use sony's circle pad on their next handheld, the 3DS and the Wii U prototype
then sony would've dominated with the Vita if they hadn't dropped out, they did so to reclaim the console throne because xbox ruiend everything with the xbox one at e3 2013 lol... sony diverted all resources over to their ps4 and we had an amazing generation thanks to them sacrificing the vita
but the vita would live on with teh switch, as nintendo literally took what the vita and psp had built up and literally continued it, you look at the switch and you realize it's everything sony was literally building up too lol, the vita debuted with the first true analog sticks on a handheld, and nintendo revised their wii u analogs to match LOL
and i'm saying all of this as a nintendo kid and huge nintendo fan, i know when they're wrong and have played us. Nintendo was a tyrant until Sony entered the market
i disagree on your argument against the withered tech thing... they literally just COULDNT compete in the home console market despite the n64 and gamecube being the strongest consoles at their respective generations (aside from the xbox) so clearly they knew it wasnt about power - they needed a hook that would push the industry forward. and so came touch screens and motion controls, both something we see today. sure, the hardware itself was outdated, but the vision pushed tech forward because they saw the writing on the walls, ironically enough. by refusing to compete with sony and microsoft directly, they created their own space in the console wars where many people who have a playstation or xbox have a switch and if people want a cheaper alternative to those stronger systems... well, the switch is there. that has always been their thing. it is amazing marketing, it makes no sense to bash on them for that
i also disagree about the vita, the vita was inherently going to do worse than the 3ds and the portable system market at the time was just incredibly rough - it's a shock that the 3ds did as well as it did, really. everyone wanted convenience, to have everything in one place - why carry around a phone AND a game system when your phone could also do it? that perception has changed a bit, but at the time, it was at an all time peak. the vita being more expensive than the 3ds while also once more trying to push for "console quality on the go" is what killed it (along with the memory card prices) similarly to why the psp sold far worse than the ds. handhelds simply werent ready for console experiences on the go, that was only the case when the switch (or arguably switch 2) released where the tech gap had narrowed. also, analog sticks on the vita werent exactly a new thing... it was inevitable that analog sticks would come to a nintendo handheld eventually, but the clamshell design of the 3ds just didnt allow it. acting like sony saw the path forward while nintendo thought circle pads were better is just silly. also your notion that sony needed to sacrifice the vita to win against microsoft is laughable - sony isn't lacking enough funding to supplement two systems at once if nintendo, a far smaller company, could do it and win a generation on two fronts - and the vita released after the ps4. the vita didnt die because of a lack of support, infact, it actually started out with some great games unlike the 3ds... however, they got greedy and tried to push against the 'withered hardware' concept that nintendo was going for which allowed for handheld-intended experiences rather than watered down console experiences.
over all, i respect your opinion. however, it doesnt seem like you understand hardware from a conceptual level... nintendo isn't trying to scam people or something, this is just their strategy to compete in a market they were failing in
Still no new IPs, 42 yrs later😅
But why do they need new ips when the current ones sell well?
I didn't know Splatoon has been around 42 years. 🤔
splatoon, arms, xenoblade, ring fit, style savvy, pushmo, labo, mario + rabbids, hyrule warriors, boxboy, nes remix, dillon, and steel diver are all relatively recent
Switch is pure junk, but you gotta buy into it cause it's current
And yet that system sold over 139 million units.
@@christopherjohannjr.9945 yea cause it's nintendo, it's gonna sell, after 2020 that thing got worse and worse in the money you paid vs what you got
@@TerrorSyxke How can you call a Switch a total failure because of that?
All Nintendo handhelds before 3ds are trash. I have 2 new 3ds xl and new 2ds xl.
i'll agree that the gameboy wasnt the best (although it was great for the time) but the gameboy advance and ds are still great to this day honestly - especially since the gba had a very short life
