That’s not even true, Nintendo had been treating the smash competitive scene like garbage since like 2009. They dmca’d am2r and pokemon uranium because they felt like those 2d sprite fan games were a threat to market share. They basically prevented Nintendo youtubers like Scott the woz from existing until 2017 (before Doug). And Doug Bowser? he’s the ceo of Nintendo of America which is way less important than the Japan branch.
Hell, this isn’t even the first time nintendo pretended to support a smash tournament before cancelling last minute
I feel like this will always happen to corporations; they gain lots of public trust and then proceeds to break it within 2-3 CEO's

Moon needs to talk about Konami. They have an extremely dark history with the Yakuza, horrendous working conditions that give Activision or EA a run for their money, they turn their beloved franchises into pachinko machines, and cut off Hideo Kojima.
The sad part about this is that Konami used to be one of the greatest game developers of all time.
I would also want Moon to talk bout E.A, or Konami. Both, maybe?
Calling Nintendo the worst video game company is the same as calling Pillsbury the worst food company. They may have made a few questionable calls, but only a few and nothing morally.
Konami has one of the biggest, worst and saddest rise and fall stories in video game history.
I think he should just talk about the video game industry as a whole. Given how corrupt modern gaming has been lately.

It may have been fair use, but fair use is a post-hoc argument, it's not preventative in the least, and Nintendo knows this. Almost nobody does though, which I'd say is the problem.

Iwata was not only the best CEO of Nintendo he was an example of a perfect CEO in general. A great man he was.
His death RUINED NINTENDO! Iwata HATED the idea of Switch Online, and he wasn't taking down everything. But once Iwata died, everything went downhill. The switch ruined all the Nintendo charm which includes the UI music and lack of dumb subscription.

Real fact: Both Doug Bowser and Shuntaro Furukawa Never made the decision to make the paid online membership, It was planned long before they even became presidents. Which means Reggie himself was affiliated with that decision and while Iwata was hospitalized and told Sakurai to make Super Smash Bros Ultimate before he died. I honestly don't mind paying 20 bucks every December considering the fact that I have a job. As a Wii U owner Since I got the Wii U when it was released, it was a good console but it was never perfect. I'm sorry but it's true, Not everyone was able to find one back then and during that era not everything was beautiful and pretty when both Iwata and Reggie Were still around. DMCA strikes of their own, the Wii U failure, horrible marketing, terrible advertisements, lack of third party games for the Wii U, Mario tennis ultra smash and Star Fox zero. I still play on my Wii U still to this day but to be honest that era had some good memories but it's still a terrible era.
Don't just pretend everything was beautiful and pretty when both Iwata and Reggie were still around. They had DMCA strikes of their own, horrible Wii U marketing, terrible advertisements, lack of third party games for the Wii U, Wii U games based on 3DS games, Mario tennis ultra smash, metroid prime federation force, Not everyone was able to find a Wii U back then and Star Fox zero. As a Wii U owner of my own that era was never perfect even though it had good memories, I'm really sorry but it's true.

I'm actually surprised at how laid-back Nintendo was during the Reggie and Iwata era, though, the start of Nintendo's downfall was when Reggie was about to leave the company, 5 months before Bowser was elected as new CEO.
Sure it was laid back if you ignore how in that time the fucking partner Program was a thing, how Nintendo took down many videos on yt, how they shut down evo smash and how fan games began shut down at the tine

Nintendo has a habit of being very backwards with it's internet gaming and I wonder if this is where the reluctance to host etc. It's very easy to just judge but we know that there are cases of some bad practice in eSports, some gamers being accused of some heinous shit, are they playing so safe that they're just looking stingy or is it absolutely just money. Probably won't know as they're not often ones for talking about this sorts thing. Shame tho, they could learn from sega..

This isn't the first time they have attacked the fans. They did it in when video rental stores started renting video games. There are other examples but this was the biggest back in my time
TBH we just notice it more nowadays because the internet spreads information, but many vices in the video game industry have been ongoing ever since the Atari crash.
I will definitely cover more dark stories in the future ;)
Nintendo tried to get video game rental banned in the early 90s but failed. They also censored games in the US heavily.
@@cattysplat Not to mention up until the release of the SEGA genesis, Nintendo was very strong on keeping 3rd party games on the NES as much as possible (SEGA master system & TurboGrafx 16 couldn't compete).

The guy who sold the Etikons was actually a grifter, and lied about selling them for charity. So Nintendo was actually in the right there, although probably unintentionally. And aside from that all of these offenses are extremely minor and do not matter in the long run. Like yeah they are very protective of their properties, but none of it I would consider evil. So overall nintendo is not that bad, and there are far worse companies out there.
There was a discussion in PlayerEssence's channel about lack of permission to sell the Etikons, whether they were a lie or not. I'd look more into that.

@Charizard S I wouldn’t say so. Sega listens to the fans. They allow fan games to exist, and they even allowed fans to create sonic mania. Sega is far better than Nintendo in terms of how they respect their most dedicated supporters, but the same can’t be said for Nintendo.
@Charizard S So far, they are very chill with people making fan games and mods for their games. It's their mainline games that have been iffy for the past few years, though they've made the steps in the right direction with frontiers; It's not perfect, but they're learning.

As a huge Smash fan THANK YOU for this one Moon! Heck, I'm way more of a spectator than a player and seeing what Nintendo has done to the community is shameful. Also knowing that there's an endless amount of examples of Nintendo fans being disrespected and bullied by them is heartbreaking.

i like how companies like capcom and sega literally hire fangame developers for official remakes yet nintendo just burns them to the ground. you would think that it would actually be a smart move to hire someone who can literally recreate and port mechanics from a 20 year old game from the ground up onto brand new devices, but nope nintendo just cant get rid of their over inflated ego.
You'd think that, yet life shows us time and time again that what seems sensible to us doesn't seem sensible to The Beast. It's a shame but it is what is. I'm just happy we have a thriving mod/pirate scene that will always ride The Beast's back.
LS Mark made a video discussing the problems with hiring fangame developers, and those two companies have their own problems too. *No* company is great with fans.

All my life I grew up with Nintendo. Mario especially. And it breaks my heart more and more at the fact that such a love hate relationship between the company and the fan base is ever growing. Be it reasonable or not. So much innovation could be made if only they could do right by their intended audience while keeping their business clean. And it saddens me to why they do this. Is it any surprise to why people call Nintendo the "Disney" of video games?

This is likely caused by the senior Japanese management. Its insane. Their business people in the entertainment industry need to learn a lot from American companies. Nintendo USA CEOs may have prevented these policies so far. This is why Japanese pop culture never really got popular outside of Japan, because they wouldn't let online communities of fans upload anything to the internet. and then they wonder what went wrong when Kpop took the world by storm instead of Jpop.
Even popular Anime was first offered in a legal streaming service by a non-Japan website Crunchyroll to the global audience. The Japanese companies were busy banning illegal websites and selling DVDs instead of a streaming service!
Same with Manga. They kept fighting fan-made scanlations instead of providing manga to English speakers legally via the internet.
Let's not forget that Japanese OG business culture is insanely toxic, it's no excuse but it does put things in perspective.

Japan is really an ultra conservative feudal culture. I remember my Japanese relatives had never heard of NETFLIX back in 2014. By then it was super mainstream in the US. Come back a few years later in 2019 and yeah, they all had it. They just literally lag behind 7-10 years behind the rest of the world. It's not just futuristic high-tech society people seem to think of.

Just an additional note: Nintendo had introduced licensing and quality assurance for video games. This set them apart from the other systems available which due to low quality software, caused the video game crash in the first place.

I only bought preowned games or majorly discounted (50% off or more) except for a couple titles including Zelda BotW which was worth it I must say. Even though I'm a lifelong Pokémon fan I boycotted SwSh & BDSP, I took a shot on Arceus and enjoyed it which duped me into SV, we felt so ripped off after that, my spouse and I said never again! Preowned or nothing from now on. Doesn't give Nintento extra $ or increased sales, but enables us to keep using the systems we already paid for. We also committed to not buying any new consoles moving forward. We have to vote with our dollar!

Great video, I disagree about the end though. No matter what Nintendo does for the most part they will get loads of support from their fans. The smash community is very small compared to their fanbase as a whole and they've been dealing with this kind of abuse for a long time. Nintendo will always be able to sell their pokemon games and their mario games because no matter how bad they become, their fanbase is so loyal that they will buy them anyway. Many people think companies like Nintendo and Disney could do no wrong simply because they made Mickey mouse and Mario. Or they simply don't care, as what's happening with the smash community etc. doesn't matter to them.
There's also EA and Activision too.

I'm almost 32, I've been playing on Nintendo systems since I was around 10 or 11 when I got my first Gameboy (although I was using my cousins and brother's for a few years lol) - I've been fighting an uphill battle to clutch to my fandom and dedication to Nintendo because they've ALWAYS made fans feel like we matter. The Switch Lite will likely be the last system I ever buy, and I'm a schmuck for even buying the new Pokémon game but I struggle to let go of the dedication, I've loved their games more than half of my life, and I share that love with my own son. The way they've been showing us how little we matter...it became clear to me in 2020 when they buckled down on their tyranny in the form of NFC cards lol Animal Crossing was like the Wild West for about 6 months, and it just made it clear to me that all they care about is MONEY. Thanks for making the video, Moon; it feels bittersweet, but we need to talk about this.

Really looking forward to what the steam deck brings to the board over the next few years. Lot's of indi games and also amazing tripple a games. Valve is seriouspy gonna hurt nintendo. The future is linux anyway and if nintendo wants to succeed they should open up to more platforms and sell their games. If we want to pirate games we do. If we think you did a good job and deserve our money and you sell your game at a fair price then i hapily pay. In theory i pirate games and buy them afterwards because i liked them.
I have a similar situation. I have loved Pokémon my whole life and I was literally playing Violet when I found this video and honestly? It will likely be the last Pokémon game I ever get. Now, don’t mind me as I finish up playing Portal…

Nintendo actually struck all my fan art items in my Etsy shop not long after the Doug Bowser change. I knew what I was getting into, drawing characters from IPs that I don't own myself and monetizing it in any way, albeit very little, is risky. I just had a passion for it. But I get it. I'm doing other stuff these days, and I'm just thankful they just suspended my listings and didn't send me a lawsuit.
Just sad that even fan art isn't off the table now.

Yes, it was the original one. My parents were not rich nor into tech so it wasn't like they knew what was the best or even the difference between various systems. We only had two games, Super Mario and Chip n Dale.

I get your point, and I agree with your point, but if you are going to tell the story of Nintendo, you should have included more about their CEOs and some more of their failures, like NOT switching to Disc screwed them in competition with Sony, then when the FINALLY switched to Disc they fucked it up by being cheapskates using much smaller Discs on the GameCube.
On top of that, the Wii was successful because of Reggie and Iwata using a Blue Ocean (Passive Co-existence with competition) business strategy rather than Red Ocean (Active competition) it allowed them to be in every home sold as a "Family console", while Iwata was a CEO from the programming and art divisions.
Nintendo was doing great under an artist CEO, then he died and the CEO seat was split between a bunch of marketing chumps. hence why the company has been so inconsistent lately. You gotta look deeper when the hole goes deeper, this video could have been something I save and send everyone but it's just kind of another Moon video calling something terrible.

@sky lopez well Nintendo gaming side is still really great splatoon 3 with their tight window with a lot of content in its base game. Their online in that game is starting show some signs of improvement and that game sold well and got great reviews with a lot of its pros out way cons. I saw people give that game a good score if they feel free to "only needs improving" unlike metacritic user scores giving it a fat zero and forcing the net code as a con (well most likely a kid who's parents should tell the kid "you may get a virus if you go on to those site") I read a article about how splatoon 3 was a great microtransaction free game.
To be honest, this is about the reason why ive been trying my hand at game developing. Games that made your childhood, thats the perfect way to describe Nintendo, and yet there is NO legitimate way to access these games unless its through emulation or old cartridges nearing 30 years old at least. There is no friendliness or warmth to how those legacy games are treated, lost to the ages and almost completely beyond reach.
The one thing I can be on Nintendo's side for is this. They aren't just gonna port like every single of their most popular retro library to the switch, that would take away from the new stuff. That's why what they do have is emulation, via NES-N64 Switch Online. Now I say they should be providing a lot more of these games to emulate though as the library they currently have is lackluster and the price for the N64 is just horrible all around. Demanding for ports from these guys? It ain't gonna happen.

I'm red up on the controversies Nintendo got involved in (Limited releases, shutting down a Smash competition cause of a mod, Nintendo Switch Online, etc.) but even then I'm still gonna buy more games, as well as whatever the next console may be. It's just, they could draw so many straws before they break the camel's back.
And speaking of, I don't have Nintendo Switch Online, cause I have more important things to spend on, and if I brought it I would've brought a rather shitty service. And the old games there, I can just get an emulator and play them, been doing that since 2016.

despite many problems with Nintendo, it is worth noting that in their games at least there are no microtransactions on the switch, unlike many other companies, it is worth remembering the situation with GT7 on PS5 for example

Don’t forget they now charge you a monthly fee just to play online on the Switch and yet they have ZERO dedicated servers. This is part of the reason why there’s so many disconnects in their games that’s on par or even worse than online games from the early 2000s.
It really ticks me off how Nintendo is bringing the gavel down on fan games that have some really ingenious ideas that break the mold for stagnant, repetitive platformers (for some, no flak for those that like platformers). They could have gone the route of Valve and helped them program it to an official game, everyone wins. There was this cool game someone made where you play as Mario in a first-person platformer shooter with a plunger bazooka, that is the type of fan game that would make for a great side story, I mean you already have Mario with a gun in the Rayman Rabbids crossover.

I think a lot of people have the misconception that a video game company's branches are together as one. This isn't always the case. Often times, the American branches, for example like Nintendo of America or SEGA of America, make decisions and actions that the original Japanese counterparts (Nintendo of Japan/SEGA of Japan) have no idea, no part, or knowledge of (vice versa can happen as well). The original Japanese companies have been suffering because of that. Many people just see and treat as if original, the American counterparts and often forget where the company actually comes from.
The issue is Nintendo of Japan though to be honest.
Even though Nintendo makes so many mistakes like alienating their fanbase, I still love Nintendo to this day because they're still loyal to make video games.
Make no mistake, Nintendo is very unpredictable. Sure they get very protective of their image and properties, but they take their gaming handling very seriously. Up until the Nintendo Switch, I felt sorry for Nintendo. Once the PlayStation was released, there was not much they could do to get out of Sony's shadow. They got arrogant for making a mockery out of Sony, treated video games on their consoles as child's play prior to the invention of ESRB, got afraid of losing money if they allowed Daisy to appear in video games during the 1990s, stuck with making cartridges for Nintendo 64 games, made smaller disks for Nintendo Gamecube games, capitalized on the Sega Dreamcast's failure with their Wii U marketing, used Yoshi characters instead of fairies for Panel de Pon not counting the Game Boy release of Panel de Pon, and relied on portable consoles alone to try and get out of Sony's shadow at the time the PlayStation2 was still releasing video games. I'm not mad at Nintendo. They act unpredictable and take their game handling very seriously. I've learned to not mock Nintendo and I'll get punished if I do.
I'm still annoyed that Nintendo won't release their music on streaming services. They have all these songs they can sell and make money off of, yet they just won't! Everyone else releases their music to the public, so why won't Nintendo do the same?

I've been a Nintendo kid since the 80s and have been a part of every console generation since. This video is very incomplete, I hoped it would delve deeper into the real dark truths. That the "guardians of your childhood that could do no wrong" is just what they WANT you to think when they were always cutthroat to the point of being the EA/Activision of Japan.
No mention to how they sabotaged, drove off and professionally assassinated Gunpey Yokoi, their SUCCESSFUL outlawing of rental and 2nd hand markets for videogames in Japan (that emboldenned them to attempt it in the US), their strict rules for stores to sell their games, their iron grip on controlling every aspect of production, the forcing of 3rd party developers to pay for production costs of units that could never compete with their 1st party productions, Nintendo had stores under contract to prioritize shelf space to 1st party games over 3rd party (still do), partnership contracts with developers prohibiting them from ever developing anything on competitive systems (something Microsoft later became infamous for in the 360 era and people are complaining about it now with Sony), Nintendo's rugpull of Argonaut over the development of Star Fox 2 that only got resolved 20 years later, Nintendo's rugpull of Sony developing the Playstation as a Snes CD addon to compete with Sega, they had a contract, but Nintendo violated it cuz for some reason they thought the Phillips CD-i was the best bet (causing Sony to enter the market to spite Nintendo). Nintendo was in dire straights until they struck gold with the Wii by marketting it as a TOY, their 3rd party support was still atrocious and nothing 3rd party developers sold on the Wii ever translated into big sales (most games on the list of "best selling" games for the Wii are packed-in party games). Nintendo never managed to get the returns and success they got with the NES as the SNES and Gamecube, each selling worse than the predecessor.
There is A LOT more shady things to dig into about Nintendo that are way "darker" than just not allowing a Smash Bros. competition. That was just the spark that got recent fans to start breaking that spell Nintendo has on them. They are a company like any other and they do not have the consumer's best interest at heart. Just profit margins. They treat Gunpey Yokoi's commandment of refurbishing outdated tech and reselling it at a premium as the cornerstone of their success now. While they say it's about creativity and fun, it's just about minimizing production costs. The Wii was a repackaged Gamecube with more memory to manage it's OS. The Switch, back when it launched, was a mid-tier tablet chipset with a modified processor from nvidia to focus more on graphics processing rather than multitasking with multiple apps. It was clever of them to go "hybrid" cuz they already had the monopoly of portable gaming market, but just isn't really future-proof. Nintendo hasn't been in the cutting edge since the Gamecube and it was the last time they ever attempted to do so.

@@M64bros almost every video on nintendo's wrongdoings on youtube are rehashes of other videos about the smash bros competition controversies and about that specific period a year ago. Only two youtubers that reported on it at the time ever really looked back on other controversies, litigious history and anti-consumer culture that Nintendo has.

I've been telling people for years how corrupt Nintendo has always been and always get downvoted to hell on places like reddit and get accused of hating Nintendo games when I literally started gaming as a little kid with Nintendo games and was uninterested with games from other companies back in the day. One thing that has always been said but is straight up wrong in my opinion is that Nintendo saved gaming from the 1983 "video game crash" when in actuality the crash was just the downfall of Atari's 2600 console in the U.S and nowhere else in the world. Even then, Atari started to release they're popular 300,400 and ST Personal computers and were making up their losses from the 2600 in 1983. People didn't just magically stop playing video games in 1983. People were still playing consoles like the Atari 2600, Colecovison,Intelivsion, ect. And computer companies like Commodore and IBM were revitalizing PC gaming like never before. Games were dirt cheap by that point.Things like Micro computers, Arcade machines and LCD games were starting to boom in popularity everywhere else in the world like Europe, South America, Australia, Canada, and even Japan with the MSX being the most popular gaming platform there during that time. Then literally out of nowhere Nintendo comes in and monopolized the entire North American game industry with all those policies you listed above leaving us with less variety of games and treating 3rd party developers, retailers, and especially the competition like crap.
